Reviews:
Relevant information By: aplhaxor - Apr 6, 2010 Version: 1.0 I apologize but I find it hilarious to complain about syncing your ibooks from the ipad to your ipod touch. Was the ipod touch ever advertised as a reader? In addition to that, who buys an ipad to use the features and apps on a smaller screen? Do any of you know how bad it is for your eyes to read a book on a screen that small? I understand portability but reading a book on an ipod touch or iphone is just ignorant, ask your optometrist. Those who own an ipod touch or iphone, please stop being cheap and buy an ipad lol. Those devices were never supposed to be readers. Do any of you own a civic that came stock with a ferrari motor? I think not... Now the kindlers lol, the poor, poor kindlers. QUICKLY- can you access the internet, organize your calendars, check your mail, watch a movie, do you even have color (he left out so many features because its much to easy to win this debate)? Oh wait you have 16 shades of gray lol. My previous point applies to the kindlers as well. Don't buy a reader and complain about how you cant read on a smaller screen. Why did you buy the reader? For those of you who house intelligence and are somewhat tech savvy I can see some of your points in regards to annotations etc. However - try copying and pasting into a pages document on your iPad! Is this a Geico Caveman forum or an application review? My recommendation: go back to stone tablets and hieroglyphics! "Yaaaaaaaaawwwwnnnn..."
Amazing app! By: Wunderkind 31 - Apr 6, 2010 Version: 1.0 This app is wonderful for books. The sample function as well as the free book option ensures the is always something to read. There are so many options to make reading a personal experienced as well as an enjoyable one. A subtle feature of the program is the page turning animation which is not simply an animation but a constantly rendering interactive action. Simply beautiful. A side note here how can anyone justify a one star rating for a program which simply isn't supported on another device they happen to have? That isn't a review of an app. Bottom line, pick this app up for sure and if your skeptical at all try out some free classic books. You'll fall in love.
Great App By: Diceman234 - May 8, 2010 Version: 1.0 This books app is great on the iPad it is a quick free download and it is very easy to access the bookstore by one click. The animations and the detail put into this app is truly something that will sell the iPad. It has a built in dictionary which is great also you can change the font and the text size and the brightness which comes in handy especially for reading in darker areas. To improve this app it would be nice to have access to the magazines through this apps bookstore instead of having to go through iTunes on my computer. Also even though the choice of books is pretty good for having just launched about a month ago, in the future I hope the variety broadens up more. Other than that it's awesome highly recommended. If you have an iPad you should have this app on it asap. Even if you aren't much of a reader it's a great way to show off your new ipad!
Better than Kindle, Nook, and old fashion books! By: ArchAngel21x - May 6, 2010 Version: 1.0 Getting the iPad and not downloading this app is like ordering a pizza and not eating it. The iPad really is the eBook reader that many of us have been waiting for. The interface is easy to use. The transitions when turning pages mimics handling a physical book very well. I also love the way it displays my book collection cover out on a bookshelf. If you are a parent and want to encourage your kids to read more, give this a look. If you simply want to hang on to your books but you don't want the clutter of a big book collection, you must have this. If you like being able to do things you can't do with traditional books like change the font type or size....Bottom line - if you bought the iPad, DOWNLOAD THIS APP!!!
iBooks is great By: wolfboy93 - Apr 6, 2010 Version: 1.0 I think that the iBooks app is a great new way to read books and is an awesome experience. I love the iBooks app because reading could not be better. When i read i'm not only reading a story i'm also learning with the built in dictionary. Every time i come across a word that i have never seen before the dictionary is right at my finger tips. Yes i think it would be a great idea for it to be for the iPhone and iTouch but people need to just save their money so they can afford to buy the iPad instead of complaining that its to expensive. iBooks is a great app to have and i defiantly recommend it for anyone who loves to read.
Very good reader but no books in Canada yet! By: Bax501 - 6-Jun-2010 Version: 1.0.1 Excellent user interface (the paper curl when flipping pages is a nice touch) and the text is very readable and easily customized for size and typeface.Unfortunately no purchasable books are available in Canada yet. The Project Gutenberg library is available, so you can download free public domain books like Dracula. Maybe Apple will have an agreement with the publishers by the time I finish War and Peace. :-)
Of everything available, this is the best By: E & R Corp - May 3, 2010 Version: 1.0 From bookmarking, highlighting, font adjustment to night reading, this app does it very well and quickly. I also like the ability to go directly to different sections using the bottom page bar. The classics for free in the bookstore should make this an absolute must for everybody. I also like that you can turn the page back and forth from either side of the page, allowing you to keep reading with the use of just one hand. The ability to read a free 40 page sample of a book is a nice feature, since if you don't like the book no problem, but if you do find yourself hooked, you can buy from within the book. The speed with which you can switch between books makes it great for comparing different works, especially since it saves your place in each book. This makes it great for research. The highlighting / bookmarking work in conjunction with each other, making the natural selection that if you highlight some text you want to be able to find it again with out turning page by page, as happens in textbooks. Additionally, the bookmarks gain their own table of contents page which contains a portion of the text highlighted. This is really great.I was a little concerned how my eyes would feel with the backlighting, but since you can adjust the brightness while reading, my eyes experienced less fatigue than with a paper book. The only way to improve this application is to continually build the available library in the store.Overall, an excellent replacement for paper books.***Note the attention to detail that shows the text on the back of the page you are turning, as if you are partially seeing through a paper page. Great!****
IBook is great for English learner... By: Winnienho - Apr 5, 2010 Version: 1.0 I love the fact they had the dictionary builded in, it is so easy to use and convenience as well. Foreign students are lack of English book reading because we have to look up dictionary separately while we are reading, and that really interrupt the mood of reading. I usually couldn't find the book interesting because there r too many pause between for me to look up dictionary. But this iBook is so easy to use, I can also highlight the words or sentence, after I finish the book, I can just simply go to the menu and see when and where i bookmark. Honestly, if other ebook reader cost about 300, iPad is definitely a better option.I do hope they can have more different language available soon.It is very useful and I really Love it!!!
Great! By: JJ Rocchio - Apr 5, 2010 Version: 1.0 I have watched the ebook market for several years and I am glad I waited. I really like reading books on the iPad. Adjusting screen light level and angle of repose makes it easy on the eyes. I find it great for reading in bed too. The eupub format was another deciding factor.I do find that I accidentally turn pages when a finger creeps over the edge of the screen. It would be better to be able to stop this. However, pagination is so fast it is easy to get back to the desired page.Apple should issue the iPad users manual as an ebook to make it easier to read than the .PDF version. One problem though, now I have no excuse not to read all the classics I have wanted to read but could not find or carry around on my boat where I live. ;)
A happy Canadian By: skis and horses - 2-Jun-2010 Version: 1.0.1 I already have a 64 gig iPod touch so justifying the Ipad would have been difficult were it not for the reader. IBooks is a free download, and it is a simple matter to convert books that you have downloaded to your computer, using Calibre, and then drag them to your IPad. iBooks is the best ereader out there... It saves your place in your book, plus you can bookmark pages... It displays in full color... the two page display and bookshelf are beautifully done... This is a fantastic app. Thanks Apple for making it free!

iPad, IBook, ILove By: HIGHNESSTY - May 1, 2010 Version: 1.0 My boyfriend bought the iPad 4 me as a big surprise; he had this app specifically in mind. Yes, right now a lot of the books ARE OVERPRICED... Look @ the $7-$9.99 selections. But WHY this app is amazing; I am legally blind and have been holding a magnifying glass and book. Right now I'm reading the latest Jeffery Deaver novel in large print, holding it sideways, and it looks "normal"! I want to thank Steve Jobs personally 4 both this app and the iPad! I've waited 45 years for this!!! For all u haters out there... U have NO CLUE the world iPad & iBook has opened 4 this legally blind woman. Looking very 4ward to philling my "bookshelf" Yes, I realize you cannot re-sell the books. However, it does save space if one wants to de-clutter. I also believe with time iBook will have more selection. I like the search by author pheature. The "bookshelph" looks very nice and realistic. I wish EVERYONE could enjoy this app and especially the iPad the way I'm experiencing it. Like I said... I've waited a LONG TIME just to hold a book and read, like whole sentences @ a time not one word @ a time. THANK YOU APPLE!!
Free and good! By: Chris Wiese - Apr 30, 2010 Version: 1.0 This is amazing. It has encouraged me to read more than I ever have without it. You can find thousands of free e-pub books online and then sync them onto your iPad with iTunes. I'm reading the adventures of Sherlock holmes right now. I love the dictionary function, it's great for figuring out this old english style of writing. It's fun to highlight my favorite passages for later reading and easy to make a bookmark. Sometimes the best things are free!
Amazing! By: ~Alligirl~ - Apr 30, 2010 Version: 1.0 One of the specifications I got the iPad was for the awesome reading experience. I was so excited to get my first book from the iBooks store, and the app didn't let me down. I love iBooks! It's great that you can search for sayings, change the font & size, look up words you might not understand, and the most important of all, swiping the pages. This is a great way to read books for school, work or just casual time. If any of my friends got an iPad I would definitely recommend this app for them.
Free Books are up! By: MotherHoose - Apr 4, 2010 Version: 1.0 Just checked and there is a slew of the free Guttenburg offerings online now...Access thru your iBook app...I tried a few ... and want to say this is iBook is phenomenal for displaying those books! Lots of Classics to enjoy again...and College Students can get all them free for their Lit classes now! (Incidentally...here in Pittsburgh Seton Hill University is providing their students with iPads!)
I love the app! (The selection of books though...) By: bigdaddystl - Apr 4, 2010 Version: 1.0 The app is great. You can get the book from the iBooks store, which right now seems SUPER limited (like no computer books). HOWEVER, you can also import the books directly into your iTunes. Once I realized this, I was able to get the books from other sources, put the into iTunes and sync them over, so it worked great! I really enjoy using it as a reader, and look for to doing so more and more.(I haven't used a Kindle, so I don't know how it compares.)
Awesome Ipad App By: mollypia - Apr 4, 2010 Version: 1.0 I almost bought a kindle and then heard the Ipad was coming so I decided to wait, and boy am I glad I did. I travel a lot for work, and not only will I be able to read books, i can now watch movies on a screen larger than my iphone!!I bought house rules yesterday when my ipad arrived and reading on this thing is a pleasure. The page turns are fast (much better than kindle and nook) and there is a decent selection out there considering it is new app. On improvement, allow me to buy the books on my mac (like i can apps and songs) and sync them to my ipad. Great product. To those complaining about it not being compatable with the iphone, are you seriously trying to say you would read a novel on that small a screen? If you are (and you are nuts) then get stanza or one of the other apps for the iphone
Great Interface By: Hchavarria - Apr 4, 2010 Version: 1.0 It is a pleasure reading on the iPad. I imported several of my epub books that I had and everthing works perfectly. I am a kindle user and I can't seem to put this app down. I like the ability to change the background and text color, I often ready before bed and was forced to have the light on to read my Kindle which would bother my wife but with the ability of turning the background black and the text white it allows me to read and her sleep. I also like the icandy of having the books look like an actual bookshelf and reading in landscape gives me the feel that I am readying a physical book with the two page style and flipping of the pages. Simply great.
Remarkable. By: palavering - Apr 4, 2010 Version: 1.0 I purchased this user-friendly app and worked it for the better part of three hours, tonight. I was surprised how easy it was to use. I was also delighted to learn that I could send my scribblings via email directly from the app.It has a spellchecker, a dictionary (no thesaurus, unfortunately), and the usual cut and paste obtains. It also allows for margin adjustments, full justification control, and several other features to be enjoyed by any writer. It's not MS Word, but it's more than adequate for most users. And the price is right!
Easy reading By: mrlgts - Apr 26, 2010 Version: 1.0 iBooks is a great way to find and enjoy new books that I may have never found otherwise. I did not read a huge amount before however I really enjoy taking out my iPad and enjoying a book when I have a few minutes. I just hope that I am soon able to read these on my computer and iPhone and that publishers see the potential in electronic books as opposed to being afraid of it. This is the way of the future.
Absolutely the best By: kfkolonel - Apr 23, 2010 Version: 1.0 This is the way to read books! Several features I love:1. I tend to forget minor characters, especially if I put a book aside for a few days. The search feature solves this problem for me, letting me look back at previous references to the character.2. I like the easy brightness-change bar so that I can adjust it depending upon where I am reading.3. The bookmark allows me and my wife to be reading the same book. (This is not working out well, though. We both want the iPad at the same time. She may get her own iPad for her birthday next month--and get it early.)4. The font-size option is a big help, especially for my old eyes.5. The page numbering and pages-left-in-a-chapter is a great feature that is not present in other book reading apps I have seen. (Does Kindle have this?)6. I like to save quotes, so the ability to quickly copy a short segment saves me a lot of typing. On top of this, the page turning is fun. Do it slowly and watch the "paper" roll over. I feel like I could reach out and tear the sheet if I wanted to. This is not necessary for enjoying a book, but it is fun.I have given a rating of 5 stars to a few other apps, so I wish there was a 6th star for this one.Apple, now please make the three iWork apps this good--that is, improve them so that they do the same things that the computer iWork programs do.
