Rating: rating 8(27)
Version: 1.0.0.1
Size: 1.21 GB

Price:  $9.99

Description:

This version of The Elements is for iPhone 4 only, in English with American spellings. It features beautiful high-resolution content optimized for the iPhone 4 screen. If you think you've seen the periodic table, think again. The Elements for iPhone lets you experience the beauty and fascination of the building blocks of our universe in a way you've never seen before.
You start off at a periodic table (the home screen) composed of photographs of the real elements which you can explore with your finger.  As you move your finger around, the currently active elements is shown in the selection area at the top of the page. Tap it once to go to this element's own page. Here you will find a detailed account of the element and a wealth of samples and objects relating to that element. There are multiple objects for each element, with controls at the top of the page to browse them.
It's when you touch any of the element objects that the real magic starts. Use your finger to turn the object as fast or as slowly as you like. Each object responds effortlessly to your touch, and objects can be "thrown" to set them spinning. Every sample was painstakingly photographed from all sides on a precision turntable. Touch any image with your finger and it will spin fluidly, showing you 360 degrees of exquisite detail.
In addition, The Elements for iPhone gives you access to a huge depth of technical information about each element through the Wolfram|Alpha computable knowledge engine embedded in this ebook.  Touch the Wolfram|Alpha logo and you will be taken to a continuously updated Wolfram|Alpha report on the current element. For example, tap the Wolfram|Alpha entry for gold and find the current market price.
The Elements for iPhone is based on the best-selling iPad ebook and as well as on the acclaimed hard cover edition of The Elements by Theodore Gray, Popular Science Magazine’s Gray Matter columnist.  You will be drawn-in by the rotations, but once you start reading the accounts of each element, you’ll be hooked on the fun stories and fascinating facts.
If you had a bad experience with chem class in school, this book is the antidote.  If you or someone you know is afraid chemistry is going to be their most boring subject, this book will show them that there’s a lot more to the periodic table than a bunch of numbers and letters.
If you have an iPhone 4, you really need this book, if only to experience the delight of exploring this vast and beautifully photographed collection of rotations.
Praise for the Hardcover Edition
“This glorious book is more than just a guide to the elements; it will fundamentally deepen your appreciation of the substances that make up our world.” –Oliver Sacks, Author of Awakenings and Uncle Tungsten
“This is the element book that in style and content outshines all element books! The photographs are fantastic in their mod layout on black. In the accompanying short texts, in a few choice words, Gray sketches utility, delves into history, and isn’t afraid to make sharp comments about the world. My reaction: elemental delight.”–Roald Hoffmann, writer and winner of the Nobel Prize for Chemistry

Stunning, with fun extras  rating of The Elements for iPhone 4
By: _jsw_ - Jun 25, 2010
Version: 1.0.0.1
Granted, this app is huge and takes a while to install. That doesn't matter, because it's worth it. I've been using it for hours with no crashes or glitches (the iPad version reviews mention some issues with that platform). My hours of use? Filled with fun and learning for my kids and me. When you bring up an element and twist the iPhone, the internal gyro detects that and spins the display. There's an element song, which is fun to watch. There are explanations for all the elements, as one would expect, and multiple views of examples for most. To me, one of the coolest aspects is the main screen - all the elements in motion and visible on the iPhone 4's amazing display. Also, the Wolfram Alpha integration is a nice touch. Highly recommended.

Informative, cool, but expensive  rating of The Elements for iPhone 4

I always loved science so I couldn't pass down the opportunity to get this app. The example images are really nice - the gyroscope feature is also cool but the image rotation can hang very briefly at various points while turning your body. The information presented on each element is good although short. Not sure if $10 is a fair price though - should be half that. I'm sure the iPad version is much better and worth every penny.

Awesome App! Uses Gyroscope.  rating of The Elements for iPhone 4
By: Super Critic - Jul 1, 2010

The Elements for iPhone 4 is just as awesome of an app as is the iPad version. I've learned a lot through these apps. Did anyone else catch that in addition to being able to rotate objects with your finger, you can rotate the iPhone 4 and use the gyroscope to rotate objects on screen? It's pretty cool. By the way, the idiots who are complaining that "The Elements for iPHONE 4" won't load on their 3GS or iTouch or Apple ][ are total morons. You shouldn't need to go further than the title to find out why. Sheesh. Anyway: great app, a little pricey (although I realize this guy has to put food on the table), four stars.

Idiots shouldn't download this app anyway  rating of The Elements for iPhone 4

The title of the App is The Elements for iPhone 4. So I don't get the idiots complaining it doesn't work on their 3GS or iTouch or Commodore 64 or whatever. It's a beautiful app. I think the $9.99 pricepoint is way high for something you will enjoy for a few minutes then only use it occasionally. Also, the app is 1.2 gb. That's a big deal if your space is limited, like mine. Anyway, awesome app but overpriced and it's a big file. 4 stars for the high price.

GREAT!  rating of The Elements for iPhone 4

Great book, beautiful visuals. It's not the best reference and it is missing some information such as atomic structure that the hard-cover book includes. On the iPhone 4, it looks absolutely brilliant.I recommend this for anyone who's really interested in materials and wants a really nice coffee table book...in their pocket.

Good but leaves me asking basic questions...  rating of The Elements for iPhone 4
By: Randy Kopf - Jun 27, 2010

It's a great application. I was surprised I wanted to see each elements basic atomic structure. I also expected to see the discovery date and details for each element. MY BAD looking deeper they do provide a link through the Wolfram Alpha link to Wikipedia & PeriodicTable.com with the connecting link! Way to go!

One of the Best Apps in the Apps Store!  rating of The Elements for iPhone 4
By: Jimhall_ - Jun 27, 2010
Version: 1.0.0.1
This is one of the best apps in the apps store. Extremely well done! Two suggestions to improve app. 1. resize text to make it larger and 2. next to element name, include diction name, i.e., (actinium [ac-tin-ee-uh m] with and without sound. This will help us to pronounce the elements correctly. These suggestions would also apply to the iPad app as well.

It is so impressive on the iPhone 4! I saw the iPad version and loved it and never thought it would translate well to a smaller screen but I was wrong. Totally awesome and educational! I downloaded over the computer b/c it's a large file and had no problems.

Very interactive  rating of The Elements for iPhone 4
By: Weehoo - Jun 25, 2010

This is a beautifully done, interactive book. The only complaint is that there is no stereo-graphic 3d effect. The iPad version does include this. Otherwise, very neat for anyone that loves science.
