Business Card Reader | | Last changed: Version: 1.1 |
 | Category: Business | | Rating: (1075) | Version: SHAPE | Size: | Price: $5.99 |

Description:
Special Introduction Price. #1 Business App in US App Store in one day after release. Instant business cards recognition right on the iPhone! It works on iPhone 3GS. For older iPhone models macro lens attachment is necessary! Import contact information right from business card to your iPhone contacts, just take a photo of the business card and New Contact is added! Business Card Reader takes photo, then "reads" it using text recognition technology made by ABBYY and enters complete and accurate contact info into appropriate fields of the iPhone address book. There is no need in boring manual retyping of all names, phone numbers, emails etc. from business cards anymore! Recognizes English, French, Italian, German and Spanish business cards. Added Value: In a built-in browser it is possible to make automated LinkedIn search of a scanned contact and read LinkedIn profile without leaving the Business Card Reader app. Embedded browser uses the same filtering as Safari: if Safari is disabled this app will also turn off the browser. Business Card Reader is a great value and excellent tool for business professionals, exhibitors at trade shows, exhibitions attendees and sales personnel. HOW TO GET GOOD RECOGNITION RESULTS 1. Put business card on a flat surface. 2. Good lighting is a key factor: at least a bright desk lamp or direct sunlight on a sunny day is necessary. 3. On iPhone 3GS make sure the camera is focused on the business card. On older models you should use 3rd party additional lenses to get good results. 4. Hold the iPhone right above the card. Keep the card aligned with viewfinder edges and adjust iPhone positioning so that the card fits the screen size. 5. Hold the iPhone firmly and take the picture. 6. After recognition is done, it's a good idea to check the result, since no OCR software yet can guarantee 100% result. In next version we will add business card holder to save the original photos of business cards along with the contact details. COMPATIBILITY NOTES - No special equipment is required for using the app on iPhone 3GS since its camera allows to take photo of good enough quality. - If you are using iPhone 2G or 3G, you may need additional gadgets to improve photo quality, such as Griffin Clarifi. - Since iPod Touch doesn't have built-in camera, it's possible to recognize business cards only from saved images. Awesome for business!! By: Midnight Assassin - 17-Nov-2009 Version: 1.0 I have tried MANY, and I mean, wasted a lot of money, on a few of the biz card readers on the App Store but none come close to this little gem. It will succeed in getting the majority of the information right. Anyone who expects any reader to be 100% is crazy. With the various designs a card is set it's just not possible!!! This great program requires little amendments but it also allows you to see the LinkedIn profile of the person so you can add even more info.INVALUABLE! Hey, you should be hitting the BUY NOW button!!!!
Outstanding outstanding By: Atkinson - Nov 13, 2009 Version: 1.0 I purchased the other one on the app store for almost $15 it worked well except for the one hour for processing. This works in about 3 seconds. This is the best! Only negative is you can not save cards to a specific group. Everything goes into main contacts. Being able to save cards in groups. CustomerFollowupSend lit. Strong leadEtc. PersonalBusiness Etc. This is needed! We already have this ability in contacts. This app just needs to add this option!Still a wonderful program
Get my Vote Read on By: Oddballslim - Nov 11, 2009 Version: 1.0 There is One thing I enjoy is testing out Apps and this is Apps make it all worth while. I can truly say this works well. Good Lighting is the key to this app or any apps that uses a camera. The OCR in this program did not miss a thing. I tested this app out today giving it a good work out and it passed with only a 2 real issue 1) Need good lighting not the best but enough to see the card clearly 2) When it scanned the Lawyers card it put ESQ on the address line other then that no issue. No editing at all so far. I scanned over 25 cards and this app work great. I must say I like this App it will save you time updating your contacts. I do not give out 5 stars easily but this one get all 5 Thanks!
Not good - not one card recognised By: Tone-UK - 30-Nov-2009 Version: 1.1 UpdatedOk, tried tonight and now for some reason in this light it works perfectly. Really, spot on ace, super!!! Would recommend nowBought this after Reading some good reviews, should of waited for my reviews as in reality it simply doesn't work. I've tried so many different cards in different light and conditions and not once has it worked. I really wanted this to work as I am always being given cards which I then need to enter on to outlook and thought this was the perfect app - sadly mistaken .... In short POOP
Great App By: MJHon - Nov 6, 2009 Version: 1.0 This app works suprisingly well. At first I thought the closer I got with the picture the better but later realized I was too close and the images was too fuzzy for the OCR to work properly. So make sure you don't get too close to the card when you're taking the photo of it. Other than that, the app works really well. The OCR could be improved but I would say it gets 80% there and makes it very easy to enter contacts from business cards. Worth the $6 for me.
Works very well, if you're cards are fine By: bombikea - 10-Nov-2009 Version: 1.0 I used a 3gs. Clarity of photo capture seems vital and as 3gs has autofocus macro, my card photos were crisp. With dark text on White it was perfect, with White against light green it was still good. It seems that the better the contrast, the higher accuracy. I would rate this as extremely accurate and good value, with the caveat that cards with unusual fonts and/or strange spacing and layout will need much more editing after capture. If your tame designer knocks you out a tight stretched block of text on your card, it is going to struggle, but for rest it is exceedingly impressive.
GENIUS By: Lee Hendricks - 02-Nov-2009 Version: 1.0 This application is incredible. I was a little bit sceptical when I read the manufacturer's blurb, but was tempted because of the amount of time I spend capturing data from business cards. I thought if this works, it'll save me hours. I installed it on my 3GS without a hitch and immediately used it to capture 5 business cards, all with different layouts. The app worked like a charm. There were a couple of recognition errors on telephone dialling codes, but these were quickly corrected in the view screen before saving the contacts in my address book. Highly recommended. A great application that turns your iPhone into a n industry standard business card reader.
A feature that iPhone misses till now By: Baochun - 6-Nov-2009 Version: 1.0 This application does its job as described, with amazing precision. It is able to figure out the different fields, including main phone number, cell number, web URL, business, and mailing address, and then put them into respective fields in the address book. I was surprised with the accuracy of the OCR algorithm. This makes up one of the missing features of the iPhone -- being able to read business cards -- that cheaper phones may have. I would not hesitate with a purchase. I did use a 3GS as suggested, with good lighting on the business card before use.
Well Worth It By: jlnvs - Dec 1, 2009 Version: 1.1 I scanned six very different style cards and it worked great. The only typos were in addresses with special characters (i.e. #). The important info including name, title, organization, phone, e-mail were almost perfect on my first 6 tries. I had to change "ext." in somebody's phone number extension to a pause. The application is laid out well and let's you edit the scanned info in the iPhone contacts manager or directly as plain text. All of my tests were under regular office flourescent lighting which cast shadows on the cards from the camera but it didn't matter. Waaaay better than typing. Well done!

My new favorite app By: K Lueds - Dec 10, 2009 Version: 1.1 I travel internationally and have some very unusual spellings but I still get good results. The quality of the scan is directly proportional to the quality of the light source, but most of the time I only have to edit a few things even in less than optimal light. One thing it doesn't do is separate the address fields, so the city/state/country/postal code all wind up in the address line, but now that iPhone does cut and paste it's no big deal.
Astounding result the first time out By: CritiCat - Dec 10, 2009 Version: 1.1 Before I write this review, let me comment on the abysmal literacy most of the one and two star ratings display. They had zero credibility for me. I have a business card that has a violet background with pale yellow and white text. I'd have to say that this is a relatively challenging test for OCR, however, using my itty bitty 20 watt halogen down light above my keyboard, I created an easel of a row of keys on my keyboard and my sunglasses as the shelf and legs respectively. I followed the directions and adjusted my iPhone 3GS so the image filled the screen and the camera lens was parallel to the card surface. One click and two phone numbers, web site, email, company name and my name were all scanned correctly. I expected a higher error rate because state-of-the-art OCR is just not perfect. It never has been, but this first card had zero errors! This may have been beginner's luck, but with this degree of accuracy, the manual corrections I expect to make in the future should be quite acceptable. I think this app is a real bargain and it will save me from ever having to keep up with business cards. Great work, Shape!
Batting 1000 By: Testbs - Dec 9, 2009 Version: 1.1 Just purchased the app and even though many of the snidely whiplash reviews made me pause, I still proceeded. I'm very happy I looked beyond the negative reviews. I've only scanned one card so far but the program nailed it. I use a 3GS so not certain if that makes a difference but for a business person, this program is a perfect tool to keep your data up to date! Looking forward to future enhancements (like ability to ID a category)
One word DIRECTIONS By: Seamonkey 666 - Nov 14, 2009 Version: 1.0 Wow so many negative reviews I don't know why so many people are having such a tuff time with this app. Sure there are a few problems ...first and last names are ran together , cards with heavy graphics don't always work these problems are minor and I'm sure are being worked on . Other than that line up the card with the arrows & provide proper lighting and shazam!! It works. Bottom line "follow directions" as simple as that.

Worked First Time By: LouiseC - 28-Nov-2009 Version: 1.1 This app worked first time for me, and continues to work well (on a 3GS). It does struggle a little if the font on the card is fancy but that is rare and I am very impressed with the accuracy of transcription. Somehow it recognises what text should go in what field and is really fast. I scanned through a book of business cards in about half an hour and now they are all synced to outlook. I'm chuffed with this app.
Surprisingly good By: Erydan - 1-Dec-2009 Version: 1.1 The reviews for this app were fairly decent considering all the obvious pitfalls you would suspect it to have. I am happy to say it works with surprising accuracy. Far better then I would have thought or hoped for. You will need to make some minor corections but so far nothing major.Edit. I forgot to mention the one really annoying thing. It doesn't seem to catch the last name when a middle initial is present so you have to enter it 100%manually. Happenned acouple of times. But over this will save you lots of time.
Much improved in Version 1.1 By: gauss256 - 27-Nov-2009 Version: 1.1 Updated review: My original review had the subject line "Better than manual entry, but barely". Version 1.1 has made a number of improvements and the app works MUCH better than before. I had a stack of cards that failed badly in v1.0 failed and about 80% of those are now being recognized quite well. You still have to do a fair amount of touch-up but it is now substantially better than entering by hand. If they keep improving the app at this rate (and it still needs improvement) it will be really killer. As it is, I'm upping my rating to four stars and I recommend this to anyone who is willing to put up with the necessary manual tweaks. Even desktop business card readers need tweaks, they are not as convenient and they cost a LOT more.
Way better than Cardreader. By: AKAfenix - Dec 1, 2009 Version: 1.1 Don't waist ur money on Cardreader!!! I first purchased Cardreader and it sucked so I then purchased this app and compared the two. This one is a million times better than Cardreader and it costs less. Overall this app is great, I give it a 4 cause it could use some improvements on focus assist. Pros: Can scan mutli colored buisness cards without a problem. Puts the info where it SHOULD go almost every time. Better and cheaper than the competition. Can merge the info with a current contact or create new. Cons: Lighting has to be good when taking picture of the card. If the buisness card has extra large and small print, the small print may have some errors do to focus problems. Takes a little while to focus on text.
Works very good - best choice out there! By: dm5272 - Nov 12, 2009 Version: 1.0 This app works good enough for $6 and good enough to save you time when collecting cards and inputting the info on you contacts. 1. This app is not perfect, but the snapshot of the original biz card is aleays available to review any errors. 2. Taking a picture with the iPhone requires a steady hand and waiting and extra half second to get better pics which also help the scanning process****** TIP to Improve Scanning*******Dont take a pic of the ENTIRE biz card if the text is just in one side of the card. The closer you are to the main info - the better the OCR works since it gets a better detaile look at the information. Ley me know f this helps you - it helped me! (iPhone 3gs)Thanks!dm5272
