Best to think outside the box

While others are choosing to denigrate this app, I choose to find useful purposes for it. I am a single, active person who goes horseback riding in remote areas. I also do dirt bike riding alone. If I was to choose to use this app every so often, my girlfriend could use this app to either know that I am ok and am reporting in, or she could use it to send help for me if I was found to not have reported in and was unreachable via phone.
I could also imagine a fleet of employees who had all been given routes for deliveries. I would require that each driver use the app upon arrival to each destination. Given that each route and delivery would require different lengths of time, as the day progressed, I could easily see just how far each employee was in to their task. As the day progressed, I could identify which drivers were going to finish early and which drivers were going to need help in getting their deliveries done on time. I could then contact those drivers and have them coordinate the sharing of yet to be done deliveries. It would only take seconds for each driver to be reporting their position and I would not have to be manually talking to each driver to know how their day was progressing.
For these kind of uses, this app is a free and valuable app. Having said that, it would be handy to be able to change the icon that is used for the application so that if the user wanted to deceive someone who found the device, it would be easier to do.

I stopped by the Gadgetrak booth at MacWorld today and saw the cool things they were doing with the Mac, really cool stuff. They also told me about this free iPhone app and downloaded it and registered. Pretty cool, the location gets more accurate the more it is clicked. It stinks that it cannot run in the background, but they had mentioned that they are waiting for Apple to open the device up a bit more to do this. Great start though and a useful service.

Westicless, you do not need to buy the PC/Mac software it is a differnt product for those devices, I learned by reading the website and the installation instructions. The iPhone application is free, I downloaded and installed it with no issues, but you need to follow the instructions. It looks like most of the bad reviews are from illiterate kids who cannot follow the instructions, read the installation guide. I also had a question about the product and contacted their support and they responded in a timely fashion, so you may want to contact them if you have questions. The bad thing about these free apps is that anyone can download and anyone can write a review, even if they have no clue.

I have developed a few iPhone apps and I think the idea behind this app is great! iPhone theft is going to become a bigger problem. The comments regarding location being off are valid, however this is probably due to the person being indoors, the iPhone 3G GPS only works outside when it can get a signal, otherwise it uses wi-fi network or cell tower information, so that is why it may show it a few blocks off. The iPod Touch and older iPhones without GPS are going to be slightly off just because of this as well.
I would like to see this as a background type process, but it is not available to developers, but it is coming I am sure. I see a lot of other uses for the application however, the idea that you can hit a button and have your current location be logged to your account can be very useful. I hope to see some additional features for this app in a later release.
I have it installed correctly as I followed the instructions, most of the people who are giving this a one star appear to be folks who could not figure it out. It is different from other apps as there is a registration process to sync your device with the server, but it is pretty straightforward.

This app works perfect, except for the address. It is off, BUT it shows the correct ip address, so you copy that ip, and google a ip tracker, paste the ip and there you go. You have the correct address. This app is amazing, and works perfect except for the off address thing but it rocks. Make sure that you download this app and if you passed the first grade, it takes 1 minute to register as long as you know the info for your iPhone/itouch get this app if younare smart and you don't wana get your stuff stolen!

Great app as iphone theft is probably already a big issue already. A little off if the iPhone is indoor but this is a limitation of the phone itself. Hiding the icon would be a great idea if possible, so the thief won't be able to change the URL. Also having the possibility to send offline messages to the phone as SMS to warn the thief, as well to have the possibility to override and change the password lock for the phone would be an awesome feature.

This app has a lot of promise. The name is a deterrent at the moment. As others have said, most thieves aren't going to open an app called 'trak'. While I liked the fingerprint icon better myslef, I can see that this one looks a bit more like Safari. The location issue is a problem as well, but that is from cell towers and possibly being inside. Not much the app can do about that, except be relatively close.
I hope they make the process a bit easier so that a thief doesn't realize something is up and stop the process before tracking can occur.
All in all a good start; hopefully some of these issues will be addressed soon.

I live in the Philippines and was instantly impressed when this located my iPhone to within one house in a very cramped subdivision. 10 minutes later, the report was saying I was about 2 kilometers away (I had gone back into the house from the terrace). Now if GadgetTrak could tell us on the report if the location was by GPS or cell phone triangulation, that would improve this dramatically, letting users know which location on the report was the most likely actual location.......or I could just move back to the US.

This app provides a crucial capability, although limited by the SDK, so it can't run on the background like its Mac compatriot.
I would correct one previous concern; the request for location only comes up the first couple times you run the app, so after you've tried it a couple times, any thief would not have that choice.
I do think a more enticing logo and title would help improve the chance that someone exploring your iPhone (both thieves and Good Samaritans) would trigger the tracking.
So...it's free...it works...and it's definitely better than nothing!

alot of people that write reviews about this keep saying "oh well there must be some stupid theives" or whatever, but everybody i know that has an iphone or ipodtouch or mac book or whatever they have gadgettrak on most of them have a key code so its pretty much useless to them eitherway. all in all its a good app very helpful i did leave my ipod at the library the other day and iwas able to use this app to recover my ipod from my computer making the app very helpful and good, i have not one bad thing about this app to say.

I think that it should be renamed to "Internet" "SafariBrowser" or something like that and change the icon to an Internet browsing type icon. Works very good though can locate my phone very well. Used the native Maps with the app installed and (like a thief might do bc he/she wants to check the phone out) it got my exact locaton on the website down to the exact address and gps coordinates!!!

put safari on the 10th page

push the original safari app on to the 10th page so that thiefs wont find it, and mistake this app for it.
cant wait till it's not limited to opening the app, but this is a good workaround.

Hey! You need to change the icon title from Trak to something more deceiving to trick thiefs. They won't open it if they are suspicious. Fix this and it's a perfect app. Write your own review saying they need to change the icon name if you agree! This will help them do it faster

This app is adorable, featurerich and has a mint finition. Useful when you lost your iphone/ipod touch or someone stole it, you track everything and you know where it is!! GET THIS APP

This is a great traking application! But I think that maybe the app should me disguised as a game so some one would run it more often
