JotNot converts your iPhone into a portable scanner.
You can use JotNot to process your pictures of documents, receipts, whiteboards & blackboards, business cards, and notes, making them easier to read, print, and share. All the processing happens on your iPhone so you do not have worry about confidential data. There's no subscription fee, nor do you need the Internet access to process documents.
We fully stand behind JotNot and we want to hear from you: please email us at support@jotnot.com.
Here is what the press has to say about JotNot:
"I’ve found that if you take the picture carefully, JotNot can capture a document as well as a fax machine can. And, of course, it’s much easier to carry around."
» The New York Times, July 2009
"I am amazed at how readable the processed images are."
» MacWorld UK / The Industry Standard
"The application works perfectly for casually taking photographs of your documents to ensure that you don’t lose them, and is one that I’ll probably wind up using pretty frequently."
» TechCrunch
This update (v1.3) includes Evernote integration--allowing you to save your scans directly to Evernote from JotNot. Evernote (evernote.com) turns your iPhone into an extension of your brain. Evernote is a free multi-award winning web service that magically "reads" the text and handwriting in your scans making them searchable. It is an amazing service, and one we highly recommend using in conjunction with JotNot.
JotNot is the only scanning application with any of the following features:
• Evernote integration
• A WiFi server to access PDFs from a computer
• Automatic image processing algorithms (fixes uneven lighting and shadows)
JotNot provides the following additional features:
• A simple, easy to use interface
• Ability to email scans as PDFs, PNGs, or JPEGs
• Presets for receipts, documents, and more
• Automatic paper sizing: Letter, Legal, or A4
• Ability to save to the Photo Library
• Ability to import from the Photo Library
Using JotNot is easy. Just follow these simple steps:
1) Take a picture of a receipt, whiteboard, blackboard, document, business card, or note; alternatively you can import one from your Photo Library.
2) Drag the corners of the blue rectangle, aligning them with the corners of your document; the blue area will be saved and processed.
3) Adjust the processing settings (by clicking the gear icon) and/or select the paper size (leaving it on "Auto" is fine).
4) Click "Process" to enhance the image. You will be shown a preview of the enhanced image. From here you can click:
• The envelope to send an email,
• The arrow to send the image to Evernote,
• The "info" button for Settings / turn on WiFi,
• "Done" to save to the Photo Library or as a PDF,
• "Select" to go back to the Selection Screen.
5) To process another image, select "Done" and choose "Return to Main".
It is that simple. Here are a couple of tips to get the best quality scans:
• Make sure the document is flat
• Ensure that the document is well lit
• Use a preset mode when possible
• For faint text try maxing out the contrast
• If you have a 1st Gen or 3G iPhone, you MUST hold the phone at least 12 inches away to get a sharp image (due to the fixed focus lens).
We are actively developing JotNot and look forward to frequent updates. Please take our survey at http://blog.jotnot.com. We decide which features to add next based on the survey and based on your emails.
We provide email support for JotNot--if you have a request, question, or problem please email us at support@jotnot.com. We will respond within 24 hours.

Amazing Little Utility  rating of JotNot Scanner for Receipts, Whiteboards, Business Cards, and Documents
By: GOMGOM - Jun 16, 2009
Version: 1.1
I'm using JotNot with a macro lens-equipped iPhone case (Griffin Technoloy's "Clarifi"). When combined with a proper macro lens, JotNot does the job amazingly.
I often "scan" even some full letter-sized documents with this combination and they're really readable.
I read the existing reviews giving 1 or 2 stars: they are mainly complaining about focusing problem, and it's not JotNot's fault but problem of pre-3GS iphones' crappy fixed-focus camera module.
JotNot is one of my favorite iPhone app. It definitely worths the money.

Great one trick pony  rating of JotNot Scanner for Receipts, Whiteboards, Business Cards, and Documents
By: ExNewt - Apr 18, 2009
Version: 1.1
The app has limited usefulness, and due to iPhone camera limitations it can't make a silk purse from a sow's ear. Where I find by shines are in two uses: 1) snapping a picture of a whiteboard or flipchart(s) to save meeting minutes, I used to have to drag out my Canon TX1, now I just use my iPhone for legible shots. I can also easily e-mail them to attendees; 2) covert (or overt) document review. This App really shines when you take a non-optimal off-center shot of a document, the processing allows you to "square up" the trapezoidal-looking image, and actually read the text. I find it invaluable for taking pictures of documents on people's desks - while speaking to them - that I really shouldn't see, much less remember!

Extremely Useful  rating of JotNot Scanner for Receipts, Whiteboards, Business Cards, and Documents

This is a nice solid app that work just as described! I used to take pictures of my schesduals, reciepts, an papers just to refer back to them. This makes them all legible now. Well worth 99 cents. The only problem is the resolution of the iPhones camera. The app makes the pictures a little clearer then standard though. Some things that would attract more people. 1) take use of the acelerometer when taking pictures so it can be very clear. 2) make image options pop up while viewing cut images. So you can see which option is best, rather then having to go through the process if the contrast/black and white doesn't work. Overall still 5 stars. Great job

Edit v1.1
---------------
After downloading v1.1, I feel it only right to edit my previous review and bump my rating up from 3 stars to 5 stars. Every one of my previous comments was addressed in this release. Top notch product now. And quite a bargain at the current 99-cent price. Any criticism left now is for the iPhone's camera (stability), not the app. Well done! If you have such a need, you'd be crazy not to jump on 99 cents.
v1.0
---------------------
5 stars from 7 reviewers... really... developers/friends/family, please stop hyping up your own product. I give it 3 stars because they're off to a good start. It's far from the miracle they'd like you to believe it is. The interface is nice enough, but two gripes. First, you can't zoom the processed image in the app, so you're forced to save/exit/open photo app/zoom/delete/exit photo app/launch Jotnot/start over. Would be nice to zoom the image in the app to see if it's actually legible before saving. Then second, why bother saving the original? Just makes me have to go clear out my photo app later. Why would I bother using your app if I wanted the original? And if you take several shots from within the app, and then delete them before finding a 'keeper' (and it will take several attempts), all of those originals are in your photo app. Kind of messy.
From a processing perspective, it would be nice if there were a "black and white" only mode for receipts. And maybe a contrast setting/slider to help make the receipts more legible. I'm constantly getting yellow shadows and alias artifacts around the text in my receipts (and therefore washed out text) because it's introducing color where there isn't any.
Like I said, good start. I'm into it now for 4 bucks, so I look forward to future development.

Why does no one mention Evernote integration? This thing seamlessly sends receipts to my Evernote account into the appropriate notebook. From there I can print or send to my bookkeeper for processing. I used to carry receipts in my pocket, wallet or car until I could get them into the office for my secretary to scan and send off. No more! I just cropped about 3 steps from the process. iPhones rule! Evernote rules! Jotnot rocks them both.

I've used this app far more times than I would have expected to. Great features to email or send the scanned images to yourself or others. Also good presets for different kinds of document. If you want to send a scanned document, but have no access to a scanner then use this app. Once processed you can't really tell the document copy came from a photo. The only limitation is with the iPhone hardware. Once the iPhone camera is inevitably improved, this app will be flawless.

Works for Me  rating of JotNot Scanner for Receipts, Whiteboards, Business Cards, and Documents
By: MeMyselfandI99 - Jul 20, 2009

This application works as advertised on my 3GS. As an example, my wife was out of town and needed her favorite recipe from her cookbook. I snapped a shot of the ingredients section and sent it off, perfectly readable. Of course there are many other uses. The picture is adjusted for contrast and perspective after it is cropped. The app does not mail the document; rather it saves it to photos. Then you open photos and email from there. Hopefully Apple will some day allow developers to use the mail engine and avoid this two step process.
I've successfully captured an entire 8.5x11 inch business document that contains 9pt font, then sent it to my email, and been able to read it without a problem. Not perfect, but readable. Also, best results for larger documents will come from taking the photo on a brightly lit table, as success requires contrast. I have a lot of OCR experience, and from what I see, the resulting images probably would not suffice for OCR, but the developers don't promise that anyway.

Really good app....  rating of JotNot Scanner for Receipts, Whiteboards, Business Cards, and Documents
By: Liljmia - Nov 4, 2009

Missing 1 thing to be great. This is by far the best scanner app in the appstore but it lacks multipage support. If it had that this would be the go to app on the iphone when it comes to documents, receipts, whiteboards, etc. I used it today to take notes off of the whiteboard in my modern american history class. Perfect. I only wish the developers would listen and add the multipage support that has so many otherwise happy customers flocking to other apps. Come on developers don't ruin a great product by falling behind. Will up to 5 s when this is added.

Evernote integration will cost $45/yr based on average scan size  rating of JotNot Scanner for Receipts, Whiteboards, Business Cards, and Documents
By: dpshonen - Oct 4, 2009

Scan and crop works as advertized. The developer failed to detail the fact that "free" version of Evernote allows for only about 10 scans per month (40 MG allowance). You'll need the premium account at $45/yr if you have any desire to load more than that. Given the average size of JotNot scans, I believe the developer should properly disclose the level of service required by another software for any realistc usage.I also wish that it supported document transfer to WebDAV.

Great app. Some ideas  rating of JotNot Scanner for Receipts, Whiteboards, Business Cards, and Documents

Great app, life just got a little betterIf at all possible, saving to an album of choce is ideal (for sorting). Also, the UI could be sped up (assume the picture is good, add a retake button. Auto-place the frame box - a bad guess is better than no guess. Also the UI once you have the processed image is confusing)It's really a great app, don't be disuaded by my comments :) We both win with updates ;)

After using for one month (3GS)...  rating of JotNot Scanner for Receipts, Whiteboards, Business Cards, and Documents
By: RimJitter - Sep 20, 2009
Version: 1.3
I have been using JotNot for over a month and have been averarging 3-4 scans/day with integration to Evernote. So far it has worked as advertised. I have primarily used for work and home reciepts; but have also used for business cards, legal docs, even the roster of the local HS football team. Every scan has been readable and I've been pretty good about adjusting the enhancemant settings when need be. I have imported via wifi and have appreciated Evernote so much, I bought a 1 year subscription. Would be great to be able to create multi page docs and the ability to click anywhere on screen to take pic would be helpful. Very satisfied with JotNot.

Amazing image processing. Less than ordinary UI  rating of JotNot Scanner for Receipts, Whiteboards, Business Cards, and Documents
By: fzn - 08-Oct-2009

The image processing is pretty awesome. Love the fact that I can centrally store all my notes. No need to buy periodicals anymore. Just head over to the library and quickly snap relevant bits.Loses one star because of a rather ordinary UI. Seems like the interface was put together in a hurry. Probably cause the development team spent more time with the imaging algorithms and fair play! But I do hope that the UI gets more aesthetic nicecities so the app can get my full five.

Very useful app with one shortcoming  rating of JotNot Scanner for Receipts, Whiteboards, Business Cards, and Documents
By: soltys - Nov 15, 2009

I highly recommend it! This app has saved me a couple of times when I had to copy something and had only little time. The quality of the scanned document is amazing, although you do have to pay attention to the settings so that the results meet your requirements. The integration with Evernote is great; it helps you upload the documents instantaneously. Still, I haven't found a way to scan a couple of pages and put it in 1 pdf document. I hope this will be added with time.

Great app  rating of JotNot Scanner for Receipts, Whiteboards, Business Cards, and Documents
By: Steves 71 - 19-Mar-2009

Like the previous rewiewer I to am using this app to photograph receipts, then uploading them to my account at EverNote. It does a great job of photographing text, better than any other camera app I've tried. The only problem I've had is that every so often the app will crash during the enhancment process, rebooting the phone solves this. Because of this I'm now using the iPhones default camera app to take the photo and this app to enhance them. If it could add the photo to the photo galery as soon as it was taken (before being enhanced) or recover the photo that was in use after a crash it would be better, this would save having to use the default camera app or having to keep retaking a photo in the event of a crash.

Great application!  rating of JotNot Scanner for Receipts, Whiteboards, Business Cards, and Documents

The program works as advertised. For instance, if you take a photo with this app vs using the iPhone 3G camera you will see the difference. The pictures from this app are more readable. I downloaded the Lite version and tried taking pictures of different objects and then decided I had to get the full app. Further, I use this program with Evernote, which is another alternative to buying a Griffin Clarify case.
