Reviews:
Best recording app!! By: Gadget_Man - Nov 8, 2009 Version: 3.0.1 I could not believe what a great value this was! It has everything you need in a recorder. The best feature is the autopause and that the app works in sleep mode. I used this app to see if my wife's complaints of my snoring were as bad as she says. Well...it worked and it proved that out of 5.5 hrs. I snored 28 minutes. Ugh! You can easily fast forward by dragging the red play progress bar with your finger. It picked up sounds very well. I see many other uses for this and can get rid of my digital recorder at work. GREAT APP!!!
Best among the cheap/free recorders By: ltoutlook - Oct 16, 2008 Version: 1.1 I haven't tried the expensive voice recorders. Why bother. I tried several free (and lite ones of paid versions) recorders to figure out what I needed and liked. They were all adequate. iDicto has all the features I liked, is a beautiful program, easy to access and use, can send recordings, and excellent organization. Seeing as dedicated recorders are very expensive and iDicto is not very expensive at all, I would certainly try iDicto if you need a decent recorder on your iPhone. I have deleted 4 other apps and iDicto is my only recorder for now and the future. Excellent program. Spend your $$ on a decent mike. That is now the lowest denominator.
Best of the breed - love this recorder By: itunes frustrated - Oct 24, 2008 Version: 2.0 The changes to the interface in version 2.0 are excellent!!! They did a great job of improving how it works, making things much more obvious and they added AIFF format option as default. This is now the undisputed BEST recorder for the iPhone and at a bargain price. I usually make longer recordings so the option of sending an audio recording as an email attachment is not that interesting to me. They have said they are working on making a good solution for that and based on what the developer has created so far I look forward to just having that option as well because I expect it will be implemented very well. Everyone should download this app. It's a must have! ------ Review of version 1.2 I wrote a looong review but iTunes logged out on me and I am too tired to do it again. So here is a short version. I have used several recorder apps in real situations of public speaking. This is the best one and it is half the price of the other two high rated recorders I have been testing for hour or more recording. Makes nice quality, small files at 8kHz that have good volume (you can set it to higher quality, but unless you are recording some event with music or singing there really is no reason to, it just makes bigger files) . BIG PLUS, Wifi syncing DOES NOT require downloading and installing a special program from the developer's website like the more expensive apps. Audio format works with QuickTime player and pro. You can also import it into Audacity, the free cross-platform audio editor where you can do many, many things like the pros. The sync button should be on the playback screen somewhere and the website is not clear enough about exactly where it is. Counter-intuitive to have it on the recording screen. Reel-to-reel animation should be smaller to accommodate larger icons especially the record and sync buttons, and larger time/date stamp and larger time track. Once you catch on to how to use it though, it's by far the best recorder at a great price if you want to record for a class or seminar over a long time. I have found the app which can replace my stand alone expensive digital voice recorders along with their proprietary file formats and programs! Hallajeuh! Free at last!
First Rate By: Dark Horse 1205 - Nov 12, 2008 Version: 2.0 This is probably the best of it's kind, the best in class. It works well, and I have encountered no bugs. It is easy to use. It is good looking. If I could change only one thing, it would be startup. As of today's date, I keep one other audio recorder on my iPhone because it takes almost 8 seconds before this application is ready to begin recording, and I have another application that is ready in about 1-2 seconds. That other application lacks the ability to sort by so many criteria, but if what I want to record will be finished before this is ready, what is the point. I noticed part of the application's readiness seems to rely on where it was left. I would prefer it come up always ready to start a new recording. You could even further enhance it by allowing the joining of two recordings. Definitely, a feature enhancement, as opposed to a bug. I don't want to detract from the fact that this is a first rate application, and anyone looking should stop, pay the buck, and you will be ahead of the game, including considering downloading one of several free applications. I know you will continue to enhance this and make it even better. Wi-Fi synching with the desktop is OK, but slow, so synching through USB is the preferred method. There must be a way to make that happen in a future release. Thanks for this first rate application. I look forward to seeing what you do next.
Awesome app... Seriously.... ^_^ By: kogaluver424 - May 27, 2009 Version: 2.1.2 I usually don't take the time to write personal testimonials... But for this I just had to!!! I've been using this app for some time now... (for class lectures especially)... And just recently I got stuck next to a noisy slide projector in one of my smaller classes... I assumed that the recording would be nothing but the loud fan blowing... But after reviewing it later... I was so pleasantly surprised!!! I mean I could still hear the fan... But the professor's voice was still clearly heard!!! (I am not sure if this is just because I was in fact, in a small classroom...) However, I will definetely recommend this app to my friends!!! Both me and my GPA thank you!!!
Excellent UI, excellent features...just improve sound quality options By: ahistorian - Oct 6, 2008 Version: 1.1 The program is excellent. The UI is perfect. The options provided are all the options needed, for me at least. Playback, pause, organization, wifi transfer, etc. My only criticism is that one has only one preset quality of sound, which is good, but not crystal clear. I would request that the user be given the option to record at "low" quality or "high" quality, while accepting of course the resulting file size for the higher quality. This one element is what would push it to a the perfect 5-star application that it deserves to be. *Update*: After the 1.1, the sound quality issues have been resolved. Perfect. All that remains is for some type of sound-level measure during recording, so we can monitor the levels. But it is definitely 5-star now.
iDicto Recorder By: Thorough Review - Dec 1, 2008 Version: 2.1.2 Outstanding. Open the app, start recording, tap the phone off button and it keeps recording in the background! Great for capturing just about anything. Turn phone on, unlock it if you password protected your phone, and you're back in the app which tells you how long it has been recording while 'apparently' off. Pause the recording, go do something else, go back into the app, and you can continue recording from where you left off if you want, or you can start a new recording. So flexible. Syncing is sweet. I just launch Safari, put in the numbers the app requests as if it were a web address and the iDicto page opens from my phone! I click the download button on the screen and the audio file downloads to my computer just like any Web download. So easy! The quality is great in the HQ mode. OK here's where it really gets good. Say you're recording a lecture, you have your phone in silent mode, and a call comes in. What happens? Well, if you DON'T answer the call, the app goes into pause for as long as your phone rings. When the caller hangs up or the call goes to voice mail, the app RESUMES recording by appending to the existing file. Yea!!! I don't have to do a thing. All I loose is 10 to 15 seconds when the call came in. Now if I DO answer the call, when I'm complete and hand up, the app again appears on the screen but the recording remains in pause. To resume recording all I need do is hit the red button and iDicto continues to append to the existing file. This app is so well thought out. I use it constantly. I have one suggestion for improvement: Could you add a speakerphone button just like on the phone to route the audio to the speakers rather than the earpiece? Then I could listen from the phone without holding it to my ear. Having it play through Bluetooth would be great, too, if possible. Oh, and guess what? If you're on a phone call, you can return to the home screen by pressing the home buttion, then drop into the app, and play any file there! The person on the other end won't hear it, but YOU will hear both the recording and your phone call at the same time with the phone to your ear. Great for repeating something to someone over the phone in your own voice. Who knows, with the speakerphone capability, perhaps both of you could listen to the file while connected on the phone call. Wpuldn't that open a world of possibilities.... Thanks DAVA Consulting, absolutely top of its class.
So far, a very fine recording app By: Robert1014 - Jun 23, 2009 Version: 2.1.2 I had been putting off buying a recording app, as the one I wanted--Speakeasy--did not yet have a means to transfer recordings to one's computer. Just recently, Zarboo (Speakeasy's developer) added the means to transfer recordings, and I had decided, after some procrastination, that it was time to buy. As it happens, the other night , just before I opened the app store to purchase Speakeasy, I had been surfing the web for reviews of iPhone recording apps, and I found a review for iDicto. It sounded intriguing so I looked first for iDicto when I came to the store. That it is free--for the time being--had something to do with my deciding to download it, but the review that sent me here and the reviews I read here also influenced me. Now, mind you, I did go ahead and purchase Speakeasy, but I downloaded and installed iDicto at the same time. In the couple of days I've had both apps, I can say I like them both very much. Speakeasy has a little more colorful interface, but the basic functionality of each seems well matched. On both one can pause and resume recording and enjoy unlimited recording time, on both one has a choice of file quality, and both can transfer recordings to one's computer. Of the two, recording under the same conditions, I think iDicto may have a slightly better sound quality. Frankly, I'm impressed with iDicto and I'll be very interested in how the developer improves or otherwise adds to the app over time. I am curious, though, how iDicto's transferred sound files open on other computers. I have Ambrosia's Wiretap Studio on my Mac, and when I clicked on the iDicto file, it opened in Wiretap's Library window. If I did not have Wiretap Studio, as most people do not, I wonder what app would open or store the iDicto file. iTunes? In any case, Bravo! to Dava Consulting for a job very well done! P.S. To all the persons requesting the capacity to record phone calls in order for this app to move from "good" to "great," don't expect this to ever happen...it's illegal to record phone calls unless you have alerted the party to whom you're speaking and received their permission to record the call. With an app like this, it would be impossible to guarantee any such notification would be made or informed consent given, and we can safely assume covert recording would be rampant.
Love it!! One little add on please. By: dana7654321 - Jul 6, 2009 Version: 2.1.3 I love this app! I just got the new apple update and it looks like it came with it's own recorder but it doesn't even campare to the quality. I use this app for my classes and no matter where the teacher is in the room it picks the voice up great. I would love the option to edit the audio, just take parts out before I upload them to the computer. Maybe an optional add on for those that would like it?? Great job so far!!
Indispensable, and the best. By: rowanallen - 14-Jan-2010 Version: 3.1 This is the best dictaphone/recording application released on the iPhone, and for 59p it is an absolute steal, for other recording applications that are far inferior (in some cases every respect) cost the same, or more - for example, QuickVoice. Everything works seamlessly. There are plenty of pre-set folders on the app which you can use/delete according to your preference and add your own custom ones. In the future I would appreciate sub-folders, I imagine this will be included in an update shortly. Another useful feature is the Recycling Bin. Recorder Pro does not have the frustrating issue some apps/software do where it is easy to accidently delete a file, but if you DO delete a recording and think - actually, I wanted that - you can go to the Recycling Bin and restore. There is also an "Empty Bin" button to clear up space. Rewriting a recording is easy, as is renaming. I sometimes hesitate when purchasing apps - worrying that I won't like it, or that it will be a waste of money - but I implore you not to with this app, especially at 59p.

Indispensable, and the best. By: rowanallen - 10-Feb-2010 Version: 3.1 10/02/2010.Don't know why this app shows up as just 3* in app store, it really is the best recorder for the iPhone/iPod Touch out there. However I have to agree with a previous reviewer that the first picture on the app is detrimental. I held out buying this for a while because the picture was awful, really dire, and was considering perhaps the product in itself was, too. This isn't the case, but I'd definitely redo the pictures... I'd love for this app to look something like Momento. 14/01/2010.This is the best dictaphone/recording application released on the iPhone, and for 59p it is an absolute steal, for other recording applications that are far inferior (in some cases every respect) cost the same, or more - for example, QuickVoice. iDicto on the iPhone 3G By: Gazman1 - 17-Sep-2008 Version: 1.0 I have several sound and voice recording apps and iDicto has the best interface by a long way. You can do a lot more with iDicto recorded files although IMA4 codec and CAF file format are used but compared to similar products for the iphone, iDicto is second to none. The synchronization worked great with windows XP using IE7. In short this is the best sound/voice recorder at the moment and at just .59p it's a steal but that is just my opinion.
Excellent Recorder By: iForever - Sep 29, 2008 Version: 1.0 I did alot of searching and reading before deciding to purchase a recorder app. I went with iDicto and am sooo glad. It is great. Offers sorting by name, date, icon, and priority. The cool icons are a great way to jazz up your recordings. I used it with the iPhone earhones and the result was rather good. I also recorded with it about 5 inches from my face and the recording was not bad. Syncing is a sinch. Just be sure you are on the same Wi-Fi network as your computer. When you are done recording, select the small circle with arrows in it and in the lower left corner and it will start the sync. Then just go to bookmarks in Safari and select Bonjour and then double click your iPhone. It will connect right away and show all recordings. You just select the ones you wish to download and it saves wherever you want. Great app and well worth the dollar. I hope a future update will also allow for emailing recordings, but for now the sync works great!
Definite 2 Thumbs Up!!! By: Rhos_H - Sep 17, 2008 Version: 1.0 Before I bought a voice memo type app, read alot of the reviews that were written by various people. After doing all that, I decided to purchase SpeakEasy. I thought it was great! It did exactly what I wanted, easy to use, etc. Today I came across iDicto. At first I wasn't going to buy it, but I am a sucker for cool graphics... besides for 99cents, why not?! I have to say that I LOVE this app! I didn't think it could be better but it is! I would definitely recommend this app to anyone looking for a voice memo type app.
Wow! surpasses expectations. By: vgd1 - Oct 23, 2008 Version: 1.1 I figured for $.99, this wouldn't hurt to try out. I am a student in college, and recording lecutres is a key asset to studying for exams. I figured why not see if this could work so I can record directly to my iphone for lisening later. I sat about 4 rows back in a large auditorium, pressed record, and sat my phone on top of my backpack on the ground next to me. I listened to the lecture after class, it sounded as if the prof was talking directly into the phone. BEST OF ALL, i could use safari and bonjour after class to easily transfer my audio file wirelessly to my laptop so I could edit the clip and weed out useless points in the lecture. Overall one of the best apps I've ever purchased, and I have about 65 apps. buy it now!

Easily downloads sound recordings to your computer! By: zeeegerman - Sep 23, 2008 Version: 1.0 So you have a cool voice recorder on your iphone. You've recorded your 2 year old singing songs from the "Sound of Music" for the granndparents, some notes for work, and that poetry that's been swirling in your brain for years. But wait, they're trapped on your beautiful little iPhone. Enter iDicto. I was able to connect to my iPhone over wifi (through firefox on my PC) in about 4 seconds. All of my priceless recordings were sitting there, waiting to be downloaded. I have tried one of the other apps that uses an FTP server. Here’s my advice: Unless you a) really know what you’re doing, b) you enjoy opening up ports on your firewall to everyone or c) you have hours and hours of time to waste trying to figure out how to set up an FTP server (or you’re simply a masochist), I would not recommend the FTP route. These folks have it figured out. Bravo Dava!

Wow thank you for making it free!! By: Skipjr - Oct 15, 2008 Version: 1.1 The bouncer; I paid for other recorders and none come close to this app!!! Some buttons dnt work, it freezes sometimes and some more kinks but I'm sure you will work the BUGS out!! So all u pep. Who complain the dam app is free so download it n try it!! And if you dnt like it there is a delete button, again thank you keep up the GOOD work!!!!!! And like some recorders you only have minutes to record and it's complicated not easy like dicto
FAST-FORWARD! By: Kubitza8 - Nov 3, 2009 Version: 3.0.1 I use this during school for notes so I can write more when I get home (I know it's nerdy). However, it takes longer to get to the major points of the recording because i don't know where they are. If there was fast-forward/backwards, it would be a lot easier for me to find stuff. PLEASE FIX! BUT!!! Make sure that we can hear voices and other stuff in a *fast* way (without adjusting any octaves in the process) when fast-forwarding. You get what I am saying, right? Great app though. THANKS!!!!
