33% off. Apple Staff Favourite. "Best" award from iPhoneAppsPlus.com. Macworld app of the day. iPhoneMom.com - “Pocket Phonics is seriously educational and I think it’s a terrific tool for helping early readers. You can tell that a ton of thought and research was put into it and best of all, they talked and listened to teachers. It shows.” ==================================== Macworld - "Teach your kids to write with this innovative educational iPhone app that follows the UK's national curriculum ... help young children understand letters, and start the road to reading." ==================================== THREE-APPS-IN-ONE Only PocketPhonics combines in one app: - Letter sounds - Letter writing practice - 170 first words PocketPhonics is loved by kids and praised by teachers because it’s so much more educationally powerful and engaging than flashcard apps. Of course, like all apps that best sell themselves, there’s a FREE version (“abc PocketPhonics Lite”), so you can try before you buy. LETTER SOUNDS Simply put, phonics (letter sounds) is about helping children learn to read by understanding the sounds that letters make. The Congressionally-mandated National Reading Panel concluded that children who have “phonics instruction read better and spell better than other children”. Why letter sounds (phonics)? Letter sounds (how we say letters when we use them in words) are not the same as the letter names (what we call the letters). For instance, sound out slowly to yourself "cat". And you can see that the sounds that make up the word are nothing like what we call the letters. A child who knows their letter names won't actually find that this helps them to read even simple words like “yes". By contrast, a child who knows their letter sounds will learn to read words they’ve never seen before. PocketPhonics teaches the letter sounds for all the letters in the alphabet. It also teaches over 30 letter sounds that come from combining letters together (like “sh” and “ch”), because they are key to reading so many frequently-used words. Most apps only teach A to Z. LETTER WRITING PocketPhonics visually demonstrates how to write each letter. An obvious thing to do, but quite tricky to program (and you’ll have to look hard to find another iPhone app that does this). Children enjoy practising their writing by tracing the letter with their finger; with a shake they can erase their old writing and try again. Options under the PocketPhonic’s Settings screen allow you to choose between: * two popular handwriting styles like those taught in US schools * lowercase, uppercase and cursive letters. PocketPhonics will also check the accuracy of your child's writing (can be switched off and the tolerance varied - touch the Settings button). 170 FIRST WORDS Using a unique, "letter sounds make words" spelling game, children learn how to sound out and spell over 170 frequently-used words whilst having fun. There’s nothing else like it on the App Store. HOW POCKETPHONICS WORKS The first screen shows the six most commonly-used sounds. Once your child has practised each sound, they then play the word game. It teaches them frequently-used words composed from the sounds they’ve learnt. Reinforcing their learning with animated figures heralding their success. Once they’ve learnt these first six sounds, they move onto the next group. HOW IT WAS DESIGNED This application was designed and reviewed by teachers who use phonics to teach children to read. PocketPhonics focuses on letter sounds because they are key to reading and it doesn’t confuse children by trying to teach them the letter names at the same time. SUPPORT We always love hearing from our customers. Touch the “help” button on the first screen within PocketPhonics.

Very Nice By: www.djfete.ca - 5-Oct-2009 Version: 1.5.2 This is a very nice app my child is now learn sounds and to spell and finds this app very fun and useful. Maybe you could ad more words to work on and maybe a button the gives a word the letter starts with example sound of e - elephant. I find kids have a hard time with vowels so a word might help them figure out the different sounds by relating it to a word a - apple e - elephant i - igloo o - oyster and u - umbrella Other than that thos app was worth every penny 5 stars hands down ThanksBlessings
Littledodger44 By: littledodger44 - 18-Nov-2009 Version: 1.6.1 At last! Someone else who understands how letter sounds should be pronounced. 10/10! As a foundation stage teacher it was so refreshing to find, for example, the letter 's' is pronounced ssssss not 'suh' and the letter 'b' is pronounced 'b' not 'buh' etc. If you want your child make a great start you can't go wrong with this app. A couple of future updates could include; an option for a larger font when practising letters would be fitting to this level of learning, get rid of the silly green dot (as does not seem to work properly and can be confusing) and introduce a traffic light (static dot) system for start and finish of line during formation (I find on a yellow font works fantastically). Once again, well done. Loving the continuous updates (except dot):-) :-0 :-) :-0 :-) :-0 :-)
Impeccable Updated Version By: Angelmama350 - May 13, 2009 Version: 1.3.2 I know many of you have purchased the older version of this app., and felt horrible about the audio quality. I must say, I didn't know how bad it was, but the audio quality of this newer updated version is impeccably done in a professional recording studio! The voice is clear and accurate, and there are even two options for you to choose from - US or UK, so US customers don't have to worry about your kids picking up an UK accent and vice versa! The developer is constantly trying to make this app better and better, and I would definitely recommend you to give it a try! This is my first review about any app in the apple store 'coz I just felt that the previous comments just don't do any justice to this newly updated version. Keep it up, John!
ABC PocketPhonice By: KNGREEN1 - Sep 5, 2009 Version: 1.5.1 My little 4 year old Grandchild Lexsey, just loves this app. I got her a IPod Touch 16 GB, back when she was three , I installed all types of fun applications and all types of educational applications, I have to say all these app, has help her become the little smart girl she is today, take it from me they do help a child and learning, If you have Children and would love to see you child get ahead in learning his or her sounds and much more then you will love abc PocketPhonice, my 4 year old granddaughter walk around here all day saying words and telling everyone what that word start with or spelling the whole word out. Great! New feedback. By: Calbears - Sep 30, 2009 Version: 1.5.2 Great improvements. Very responsive to feedback. Thank you! have seen this app become more kid oriented over the last year. I'm glad that the app designers continue to take suggestions and implement strategies that improve the appearance and overall functionality of the app. As a first grade teacher, my suggestion is to change the fonts of the letters. When I teach lower case t for example I do not curve the bottom to the right, instead I write a straight line from top to bottom. If you can change the fonts of the letters to what primary grades learn it will be a more powerful tool. Also modeling the correct strokes will help kids learn to print correctly. For example, write the line in the lower case i first before the dot. I will change my rating when changes are made.
Far Better Than Most Educational CD's! By: Dolf Zone - Oct 11, 2009 Version: 1.5.2 My five year old kindergartner loves this app. And I think it's great as well. Simple and to the point. Yet complete enough to provide solid value. Saved the day today as he was getting cranky in the car going to the beach (a 45 minute drive)... "Do you want to play your game on Daddy's iPhone???" Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! All was good... Lower case, Upper case, and Cursive. Simple sounds. Complex sounds. And even a spelling game. I like this to-the-point application far better than the bloated and confusing educational CDs currently available. The UI's on most of these monstrosities are confusing even to adults. I will definitely be checking out more from Apps in My Pocket. Next up, Dolch words or similar...
DO NOT BUY!/ IMPROVED! By: LAER721 - Apr 15, 2009 Version: 1.3 This app has been improved an I like what I hear! I am so happy that the person who developed this app made the effort to improve the letter sounds. Thanks! This app is AWFUL!!!! As a teacher I was shocked to see how the sounds of the letters were pronounced! TOTALLY WRONG!!!! This teaches children the wrong way. Example: the letter "P" is not voiced when you say it but with this app they sound the letter"P" as "PUH"!!! Not correct at all! Whoever developed this app should have consulted with a teacher. Don't waste your money.
A quality learning tool By: Mr. Purp - Apr 28, 2009 Version: 1.3.1 This is a very useful app for kids and is easy to use. My only complaint is with the handwriting part of the app, which should not let you advance to the next letter if you do not write the letter accurately, with a small margin of error. For example, as it is now if you are asked to draw the letter "a", you could make a "t", or a horribly illegible "a" and the program will still let you proceed to the next letter, which doesn't seem to be the best way to help kids learn to make their letters. It would definitely be a five star app with the handwriting fixed to help improve kids accuracy!
Pretty good By: Lewinmg - Sep 18, 2009 Version: 1.5.1 1, seems there's a bug. Once out of game and just going through letters and drawing them and then hitting the right arrow, you'll get thrown back into the game again for no apparent reason2, there really should be some sorta rating system on the tracing of letters (like 1-100). This way it stops the children from getting sloppy when using app. The point is to help the children learn how to write these letters, but it really doesn't say if u are doing it right or not. Children need some sorta reward system.

Good ap but why are C and K together? By: Healthy-family.org - Oct 14, 2009 Version: 1.5.2 This ap has both US and UK pronunciations. It also uses two styles of handwriting. I like that you can choose upper or lower case and cursive. I have a first grader and two preschoolers and feel this ap has something for each of them. My only criticism on the phonics is that both C and K are listed in the first group. They make the same sound, so when a child clicks on C when they hear the correct sound for C they are told they are wrong and must then try K and vice versa. Perhaps only allow one in the first group or add an image to assist.
My happy review By: Cesar_Caceres - Oct 14, 2009 Version: 1.5.2 I never take the chance to write a review for anything. Only a few things impress me or cause my admiration, so I am happy to say that this app is well done and very easy for kids to learn. Genious creators and not greedy for I only paid $1...
Sounds By: JustTinaL - Oct 17, 2009 Version: 1.5.2 Helped my son learn his sounds so quickly!
Wonderful By: weB3now - Oct 19, 2009 Version: 1.5.2 Excellent app! Much better for my son than playing games in the waiting room! Love it.
Information + Fun = Learning By: Jlowe67 - Oct 19, 2009 Version: 1.5.2 My five-year old son, who has had difficulty with some letter recognition, loves this game. His reading skills are improving rapidly.
Just what the teacher ordered By: Karkkey - Oct 21, 2009 Version: 1.5.2 My son's kindergarden teacher said that my little one needed little more work on his letters and sounding out words. This app is great for that and he loves it. He cries when we have to put it away. I love to see him learning.
Educational and Fun is not an easy thing to accomplish By: WShatner - Oct 21, 2009 Version: 1.5.2 Fun and truly educational are hard to do together, but this app manages to do it well. My 5yr old loves to play the game portion, and trace the letters on the iPhone's screen. My wife is a Kindergarten teacher, so she had particularly high standards, and after much searching through the app store she chose this, and it has been perfect.
SLP By: djackson1991 - Oct 23, 2009 Version: 1.5.2 Great app. Rapid feedback several options. Yet another app to justify the educational potential for the iTouch!
Brilliant By: Carpet burger - 12-Jan-2009 Version: 1.0.1 This is just what I've been looking for. My 3 (nearly 4) year old loves playing this and has picked up the first group of sounds really quickly. I have previously purchased flashcard letter apps for the iPhone, but this is the only app that I can find which uses lowercase letters and phonetic sounds... and the game makes it really fun. Brilliant!
Beats the Flash Cards! By: RIPKeen - 10-Dec-2008 Version: 1.0 A great little application to have handy. My 3 year old enjoyed tracing the letters and replaying the letter sounds again and again. She very quickly picked up the sounds to recognise the letters. The game at the end helps to see which letters she needs more practice with. Defintely achieves what it sets out to do. Beats showing her the Flash Cards and it's always handy!
