Great Application for the Cultured

Definitely get the paid application as it is so much more challenging and only .99¢ What I like the most is that you actually learn from the ones that you get wrong. My only pet peeve about this application is that there needs to be many more women artists in the free and the paid application. Actually one more, I'd like to see listings of the museums, private collections and galleries that the paintings are in so that we go can see them in person.

No great women artist

Mapfox is complaining because there are no women artist on here, that is so Stupid, women artists have always been underrepresented mainly due to the fact that a young artist would have to be an apprentace. As seen in the case of Gentaleshi, she was raped. Nevertheless do not complain because there are no women artist on here because there are no great women artist in history. One would argue that O'keif is the great woman artist but really, the art of the day which was coming from male artists was far supperior. So don't put a woman artist on here just because she is a woman, put a woman artist on here because her art is comperable and deserves to be on here.

Fantastic application. Interface is excellent: simple, clean, and organized. Contains wonderful information on artists, as well as a few bios. The links from paintings to Wikipedia links is also especially useful. Every update includes additional art; commitment to improving their product is comendable. Several artists have been included solely because of user recommendations, proving they care about the consumer and the product. Overall, fantastically done. High-quality art as well as program that promises updates. Other applications would do well by using this product as an example.

This app, along with any other that promotes art, I believe, is for a good purpose. I liked the new look and interface; a couple if suggestions, though:1- When on quiz, looking at an artist's info, and clicking "back," the app quits. 2- Too much artwork! Ok, having variety is great, but some uncommon pieces might not be that common and might not reflect the author's style. It would be awesome if you could choose for the quiz either to display only common artwork or if you could actually choose the pieces or artists you want to be quizzed on. 3- You should really allow the user to download at least common artwork so you can use the app with no Internet connection, specially for those of us who use iPod touch and not iPhone. 4- Some artworks display the author's name bellow them, which makes them compleately disappointing while on quiz. I could give you five stars if you fixed these issues. Appart from that, great app!

Just updated and it totally deserves five stars.I viewed a couple of artists and their works, then the back arrow in the gallery got covered by the artist birth and death dates and would not let me back out of the gallery. I shut the app down and now it crashes when I start it. You have to uninstall and reinstall to get it working again. Hope they fix these problems because I really like the way this app is laid out.

Don't be fooled by the naysayers, this app is wonderful. Accept it for what it is not for what you want it to be. So if your favorite artist isn't here anymore, move on for Pete's sake. The developers are working around difficult copyright laws it's not their fault they can't show some artists. Love this for what it is showing youand unbelievably right in the palm of your hand. Don't pass this incredible app up. Just be happy they are not charging more because this is most definitely worth much more This is one of my all time favorite apps ever. Please keep up the good work. 

Cool application but I want an update

The application is very good and it offers lots of artists. For those who can't see the pictures in the gallery you need to download them first.For the next update though I'd suggest 2 things. Firstly it would be cool if you could add an option that allows a short excplication of the work, like time, influences, what the artist meant, important reviews ect. Also as the application is called Art, you should also include other types of work like sculptures ect.

I love this app even more than I did before. It has some bugs to work out, sure--the occasional crash here and there--but the amount of content and it's quality is impressive. Well worth the price. The people who are one starring this application are Philistines.And for the people complaining about the removal of copyrighted material...it's copyrighted material, nothing that can be done about it and it isn't coming back. If you really are so concerned by it, just save it to your phone before you update. If you didn't, maybe you should learn to read before you download things. No excuses for childish complaining.

Dear ART fans. First of all we would like to thank you for your support and understanding. It's been a tough decision to remove copyrighted artists, even temporarily. We expected that you will not like it and tried to compensate by adding 89 more other artists (not so modern but not less beautiful). We are definitely going to get modern artists back and add more in the next update. We also work on categorizing and adding more details about particular pictures (location, medium, links). The problem users experience with crashes is only when you update from earlier versions to 4.3. Yes, it's a bug, we rushed to send 4.3 and overlooked it. All you need to do to make it work is to re-install it, not update it (it's free to re-install). After that it works almost flawless, at least much more stable than 4.2. Another feature we have for you in the next update is integration with OpenFeint. That will let you send your quiz results to our global leaderboard, see how other people pass the quiz, get achievements, create challenges and even chat and find friends among fellow art fans. ART is not perfect, it's a work in progress and we are committed to make it better and better as there is no limit in discovering and learning art. Thank you for being with us and for your support. Enjoy the work for what it is. If you want to get into interpretations, go to your local library and check out the art book that is a foot thick and weighs 20 pounds!...You can literally find dozens of seperate interpretations of Bosch's "Garden of Earhly Delights". It just depends on which one you like the best. The app is great the way it is. If i want to poke my nose into the why and wherefores, i can always Google the artist...I would like, however, to see the addition of Eyvind Earle to the list of artists.....perhaps some Robert Lynn Nelson??

4.1 update crashes beyond first use. NP, just fix please. It's common for big updates to have problems. Once you buy the app you can delete and redownload it free. Will try that a little later.

Program has good fundamentals. Graphic user interface is attractive and easy to use.
Ability to download images is very nice.
what caused me to spend 99 cents was the fact you improved you app based on feedback. Sign of a mature developer.
Things to consider:
1. Some artwork is very small. Please improve that, so zoom function can show details, not pixelated view.
2. Placing built in iPod would help while we can not run more than one app at time.
3. Some kind of social forum by genre or artist would give your app a new dimension.
4. More Russian artists. Repin, kiselis.
So far I like the two Russian painters I saw. Good job. Five stars for taking feedback and 85 cents in the bank :)

Comment on new update: Even with loss of given famous artists it is still an improvement update. A lot more lesser known artists added. New artworks added to earlier artists. Author continues do improve the application, all for 99 cents(85 after tax). This appears to be the art app to buy.

I'm an Art History major who has traveled all over Europe visiting museums, monuments, cathedrals, etc. I love having this app with all it's artwork at my fingertips. I frequently get into discussions about art and artists, and love having this as a reference. I have discovered many of my favorite artists because of this app! I am not a fan of most modern art so was not bothered by the upgrade. The addition of so many new artists with the upgrade made the deletions of others almost unnoticable. My teenage daughters love this app as well, and it helps them with their art class reports.Thank you, thank you, thank you for a wonderful app. This is my favorite app, by far!

Great app with good customer service

Excellent application. The pre-update version worked great. The post-update version (4.3) crashed when I tried to use it. Fortunately the app has great customer service. I told them about the problem and they told me how to fix it. (Delete the app and then reinstall) Apparently this is a fairly common problem, so it was a no-worries solution.
I really like this app. One of the best IMHO for the iPhone. If you download the whole database, the searches are extremely fast, and the app works like a charm - even in the basements of museums where there is no signal! Highly recommended!.

Rodin

One mistake I've found, the great sculptor Auguste Rodin's gallery only includes his drawings, not the sculptures for which is is famous for. It doesn't even include "The Thinker", please fix this in a future update. Thanks, and I must say I am still a strong supporter of "Art" despite all the malicious reviews being posted concerning the copyright issues. Keep up the great work and everyone will be happy in the end. Looking forward to the next review where post-impressionists bios are added again and the idea of a link to a website featuring their art is genius. Please add Giorgio de Chirico in a future update. Thanks again.

I can't give enough praise for this beautifully rendered app. It is so artistically crafted and layed out. It is a shame that due to copyright issues certain artists were eliminated from the latest version. Obviously this is beyond the control of ADS Software. It is also a shame that warnings have to be given to nudity in art. It shows the prudishness of our society. I give this 5 stars for gorgeous graphics, navigation and historical information on the artists. I am impressed beyond words with this app and look forward to more additions.

Gorgeous. Will relax you in minutes. Even the free version is great. The paintings are fabulously represented. And so many of them! I love an app you can't get tired of, and this is one of them. My only "complaint," if you will, is that, after downloading each photo, a message reminds you it was downloaded, in your photos, and can be set as your wallpaper. After the first 2 times, the message is no longer necessary, so either have an option to shut it on and off, or just show it for the first few paintings downloaded. Otherwise, one of the best apps in the store.

A superb collection of artists, with biographies and a well-chosen set of images for each showing not just the most famous works but a representative sample over their lifetimes, so that in the case of Picasso and Dali, for instance, we can see the development of their styles from their earliest works on.
But it's an odd choice of artist. There are too many Russian artists no-one in the West has heard of, and some notable omissions: where are Rodin, Duchamp, Blake, Botticelli, Hockney, Millais, Vermeer, Whistler? The decision to list artists alphabetically by first name is an odd one, making it harder to find a specific artist. List by last name or chronologically, please - or give us the choice! We also need more images from recent artists, some of whom only get one example.
One glaring error loses a whole star: the "photograph" of the artist Francis Bacon (1909-1992) is actually an engraving of the writer and philosopher Francis Bacon (1561-1626). This one really shouldn't have slipped through quality control!

4.4 update has restored my good faith in this app! Good improvement over the past updates. Of course I am disappointed to loose a couple favorites, the number of new artists included is great. I also like the feature allowing access to additional works online. Being able to d/l direct to the app is very useful. Thanks, I look forward to learning a great deal more about art than I would without Art. --------------------------4.3 update is useless once again. App begins to load and crashes. My comments below were from a previous update. I'll be deleteing this useless version and returning to a working earlier version.------------------- Prior to this update, Art vol. 1 was GREAT. I updated and had the same problems as so many others with all data being gone (except for the links to other products). I deleted off my iPhone and synced with iTunes to restore to my previously and useable version. All is good now. DO NOT UPDATE.

I love this app. I can happily spend ages flicking through the artists and expanding my gallery, and I've discovered a number of wonderful works that way. I like the fact you can remove artists from the main list, but can also reinstate them at any time - handy as it allows you to refine your personal artist list to reflect your own tastes, while still having access to the information on removed artists if needed. The ability to send pictures to your camera reel is also great for setting wallpaper and individual contact images - I love this app!Of course, new artists seem to be being added all the time, and with that in mind, I'd like to put in requests for Alexandre Cabanel, Arthur Rackham and John Tenniel. :)Keep up the good work!
