Can I be a lazy american AND still enjoy the fine art of the world?
You can with Love Art:National Gallery.
Its basically a walk through of all their famous collections with history & back ground stories from the experts. Having been there numerous times, it was still very cool and there were many things I didnt even know about individual pieces. Its probably the closest thing to "actually" being there. I checked it out while lying in a hammock in my back yard, drinking a cold one - Now THATS the best of both worlds!!
I would love more updates in the future and it would be FANTASTIC if other museums would port their collections to this type of app.

I do not know how they are offering this free. It is beautiful, sometimes surprising, and full of interesting information about the artist and the art itself. The only thing I can think of that would make it better would be if you could enlarge the art to see more detail with tapping on the screen as I do with my photos. I still think it rates 5 stars since it is so well done and I am still enjoying this app after using it a number of days during off moments.

Somewhat baffled by some lukewarm and frankly snobbish reviews posted here. This is a FREE application - beautiful hi-res pictures, absorbing commentaries and thematic guides to one of the UK's art treasure houses!Quite breathtakingly informative and beautifully designed.Yes, there are a few gremlins and this is a very memory-heavy app. It seems to take an age to download and install and benefits from a "soft" reset before and after installation. Be patient - it's well worth the wait! This is a little iPhone gem and delighted it remains free to all!Only one thing beats this app - and that's a lazy afternoon in this awesome gallery itself. Even then, I doubt you'll learn quite as much as you can from this little pocket guide!Ignore the patronising snobs posting below - this is a must-have mini lesson in art appreciation and history. Many other app developers could learn a lot from this and, once again, it's FREE!

Great first Effort - but could be improved

A brilliant first effort at this application. Some glitches - quality of audio varies from item to item. In some cases audio disappears altogether. Also the visuals are a bit static - it would benefit from a bit of zooming into particular parts of the painting (see the Leonardo Virgin on the Rocks section for example). But overall worth at least 4 stars. I'm sure future versions will be even better.

It's great that they offered multiple perspectives. I like hearing from the curators and art historians but it's brilliant to invite artists and authors to share their thoughts. Makes me want to go back to London. I hope they will continue to update the app with more works. Well done!

Simply a wonderful, well thought out app. Once I started browsing, I could not put it down! I really hope that others will follow: Louve, MoMA, etc. I cannot afford to see these works in person, however, this app felt like a guided tour!

Wow! This app is so well done and provides such insight into the different art pieces at the National Gallery. I like how there is video and audio as well as the ability to show the paintings enlarged. This would so great if a lot of the musuems of the world could have something like this done. Well done to the developers

FINALLY, an app for museums -I've been waiting a long time. I love using this both in and out of the gallery. The images are great; love the pinch zoom to see the details of a painting. Most of all I love hearing the audio and learning secrets about all the paintings. Hope more museums catch on and get one of these.
