This is nearly perfect. Yeah it needs wi-fi. But have you seen the quality? I just watched the 5th element. It was perfectly clear and the sound was flawless. Couldn't dream of watching it over Edge or even 3G (let's be real... 2.3G on a good day!). It has full movies! It has naked girls! Yes I understand the previous posters concern with children. Begs the question why Apple won't give us lockable folders that we can place apps in that we don't want others to view?? Come on. It's one thing to have to hide your girlfriends texts from your wife but you're depriving this poor dad of his right to watch nudity on the web! I'm sure that's a Constitutional right?? Sweet app. Add more movies and a folder for full length movies only.

Ok, hands down, this app is vry different from what we normally see. Yes, you can watch movies downstreamed, I do not know how long the movie industry will allow it, but the idea is very nice. The movie quality is dvd like, nice and clear, but must be under a wifi. The downside is the quantity, there is not much of either music or movies but I guess this will change later. All in all, a must for any iphone or itouch user. Hope the movie section never gets tored down because it is nice to have a movie streamer on "a" phone ^^

Updated review after update: the app is still growing and needs more features and fixed. Still a good app. The video playback still jumps a bit because it starts playing before it's even loaded enough of the video. Also, it's annoying when you accidentally press done and you have to wait for it all to load again. This may not be a problem in the YouTube app, but this app has much better quality than YouTube, as well as no video length limit nor much regard to copyrights. However, if a hulu app comes out say goodbye to this app. :) Old review: I like joost, it's got GREAT quality and an okay selection. However, it's very buggy. It stalls frequently and runs slowly. The video sometimes pauses and you have to start from the beginning. The method to select the time in the video is hard to use and NEVER works. I like joost, but a simple bugfix update would make me update my review with five shiny stars.

This app has potential! Sure there are some bugs but most apps have that when they first come out. OK so you need wifi for this app, of corse you need that because you can get FULL movies!!! 3G would take for ever!! Think about it!! Stop bashing apps because you are impatient! It would not let me connect several times even though I was on a good connection. I know that will get worked out but you don't see me giving it 1 star! Great app as stated before! Looking forward to updates!! 5 Stars!!

Its free. How can anyone post that its not worth even d/l?!? Just delete it if u dont like it. Just too much time away from your nobel prize winning work on the large hadron collider? Yes all programs crash, just reset your iphone after installing. Not really a big deal, how many times have u restarted ur mac or pc? The program is good, full length tv shows and movies. Content is not there yet, just watched 20min starship troopers! (i know lame , but if u r loafing anyway and not working on lhc)

Obviously, lots of people like jumping on a bandwagon. The people giving this app one or two stars are idiots. It's a FREE app that, if you have a decent wifi connection, gives you tons of free programming. If your playback is bad, fix your wifi. Within a few minutes of downloading this app, I was watching a favorite Twilight Zone episode with no problems whatsoever. There's a lot of junk TV available here but a lot of gems too. Now the idiots have driven the rating for this FREE app to two stars. Good work, idiots.

All the people moaning about content need to stop and think for a minute. This app is free. There are no adverts either. How do you expect Joost to pay the copywright fees for all the shows you want. It would literally cost millions. Be realistic. This is a good app with some interesting content. Appreciate it for what it is, not for what you want it to be. Also, this is not meant to be like YouTube. That is mainly for user created content. It is different entirely.

Awesome Media Alternative

The primary Problem with YouTube App is that it's Media is limited by what others create. Joost began talks with Major Networks in obtaining licensing for many full TV shows, and other content. As such they have a great library of media which is legal to watch via a WiFi Connection (currently) and provides a great alternative for purchasing TV shows. Their selection may be limited now, but with time they collect more media, and by supporting them (And this review) they will be able to obtain better shows, and provide them for free. Please enjoy this app, and suggest it to friends. It does have some bugs now, but those always get worked out. It's a great source of video and content that you otherwise have to buy, convert, and sync onto your phone. Just wait till they put some of their live media up, so you can watch live sports, drama, or comedy. Joost app is a great start, and has a bright future.

This is a wonderful app. I was so amazed when i saw it on itunes app store. First let me say for some users saying why would you need this when u have youtube? Well the max time you can get youtube is 10 minutes... here i watched Men in Black.... the whole movie on my ipod touch. Sure, you need wi-fi for it. 3G won't be any good for iPhone users. And of course the app would freeze sometimes... it's the first version of the app. Even safari freezes sometimes, so stop complaining and enjoy such a wonderful and FREE app.

I can only tell you that I just downloaded it, and it works perfectly for me, without a skip, a jitter or a pause, whether for short videos or feature-length films. Right now I have on a Russian film from the Independent section, I'm 20 minutes into it, and even the subtitles are perfect, as well. I'm looking forward to watching all the very early Hitchcock films next. I'm amazed that it's all free, and I hope it stays that way. I wonder if some of those who are having trouble have slower broadband connections than I do. Mine is cable modem, 8 gigs, I believe. Perhaps a DSL that only offers 3 gigs of speed won't work as well. I don't know.

This was my first encounter with Joost. I am no IT expert but on my first searches, Joost was trying to tell me that I needed Adobe Flash.y I kept on trying and soon locked onto several superb Willie Nelson and Tom Waits clips where audio and video quality was excellent-- far, far superiour to the shakey, noisy, video-cam-concert-"steals" that populate the web. I just wish that I had found a way to bookmark my favourites. Thank you Joost. Mr. Pianoman

Thanks, Joost Team! This is such a promising application. If you could manage to get this to work over cellular, it would be amazing. After some updates and optimization, it might be possible, right? Hopefully you're not limited by carrier broadband concerns. In terms of UI, I'd like the ability to sort by shows as opposed to individual episodes when I choose to browse by TV shows. Search seems a little inconsistent and buggy. Regardless, this is a must have app to keep on you!

I've been waiting for an app like this ever since I got the iphone. When I found it, I saw bad review after bad review and was wondering why. I got the app and discovered a difficulty with browsing as it crashed. However, the search function works very well and allows one to view good videos. I myself have enjoyed anime, movies, and shows. It's by no means perfect, but with future updates and a larger library, this could easily be one of the best apps for the iPhone. Don't be turned away by it's bad reviews, give it a chance and try out the search function to enjoy movies and shows. Most definitly a step on the right direction!

If your looking to watch episodes of naruto or bleach, which btw I can't watch bleach episodes on pages 4 and up. If your looking for short entertaining videos YouTube is good But if your watching bleach or something similar like me then this is perfect. Please fix pages 4 and up, I'm using search "bleach" and you get episodes 1-50 in order too. But no joke fix that. Whenever I go to pages 4 or 5 to watch episode 30 it says that the video could not be played. Add more episodes, if you get 1-160 that would be awesome Grimjow ftw

Great to be on iPhone but needs improvement

It's great to see Joost app. I can watch more video on iPhone. It is a good start However, the app is still quite buggy. The app crashes frequently.
The navigation is also need to be improved. It's somehow diffcult to switch pages.
Lastly, it can only be used with wifi. I hope I can use it with 3G soon.

Updated: 01/19/2009 - The app is better after installed version 1.1. The navigation is getter smoother and it's no longer need to change pages like the way it needed on 1.0. Moreover, it still has some crashes but not as much as 1.0.
However, it's still only work on wifi ONLY.

UPDATE FIXES MANY ISSUES

Okay so the original app was terrible. Crashed all the time, videos wouldn't load correctly, and the player was terrible. I have downloaded the new update, and so far it seems as though most if not all of the issues I have mentioned were fixed. Well done! I can now stream full episodes of how I met your mother on my phone!! Great start, but more content and features are always appreciated. Thanks joost team!!

Give it another try - v1.1 is much improved

Joost v1 was as unstable as you have read. I was never able to watch more than about 3-5min of video and the navigation was very un-iPhone like. However today iTunes told me about the 1.1 update. I installed it and it and have been playing videos for the last 20min without a problem, and the navigation is more in line with other iPhone apps. If you liked the idea of Joost, but not the execution of 1.0 then give 1.1 a try.

Basic Functionality, Good Content

The app itself is nothing special. Standard sort and select functions that could still use some polish but does display media by picture and text. It would be nice if selecting an entry provided the full text and the option to play instead of starting straight up. The large content library provided free of charge more than compensates for the shortcomings. Hopefully future enhancement will push this app into five stars but don't wait for that to start enjoying loads of streaming contet, get this app and enjoy it today!

Good app with WiFi and Battery Access

If you have WiFi access and the ability to keep your battery charged, like waiting at the airport, this is a great application. However, trying to watch a three hour movie over 3G when your battery life is already getting sapped fairly quicky makes me a bit nervous. The quality is very good, though, and the selections are vast, so, it is an application I plan on keeping around and carrying my charger (or waiting for the 3G jump battery pack) for those special occassions...

I watched The 5th Element off this app. It was the best quality i've seen off the net. Absolutely perfect picture quality. Really gave me a new respect for my phones capabilities! If all there stuff comes clear like that, I'd pay for it. Much better than youtubes grainy crap. Seriously, watch a movie, you'll see! No crashing, no "white apple of death" no burning-hot phone...just goodness and sunshine. True story
