Description:
As any Star Trek fan knows, the Tricorder is a universal, portable scanning device which is used by science teams to scan the environment. It contains scientific instruments useful for shipboard and away missions. The TR-580 Mark III includes additional features not present in the previous Mark II version. Along with a complete overhaul of the graphic interface, the sound effects have been recomposed so as to come as close to the original sound effects as is possible. Main features of the TR-580 The device features two main modes. These include a scanning mode along with Library querying mode. Furthermore the information source can the switched between internal (the TRICORDER itself) and external such as the Long Range Sensors of any Starfleet vessel in range. Depending on the scanning mode, a selection of more than 24 randomly selected messages and matching library images will be displayed. If additional information on the currently found item is required, the TR-580 can access additional databases on the world wide web. A new feature present in the Mark III is the tracking mode. This allows for the user of the TR-580 to locate and track other users of the TR-580 by utilizing a local and global scanning screen. In addition, the TR-580 utilizes the built in GPS receiver of the iPhone 3G to generate locational information for the user, and can show the users current location on a google map of your area. Thanks to the graphic skills of Andy Tudor, the Tricorder TR-580 now features a completely refurbished user interface. In addition, a new Settings application allows the user to enable/disable sound effects, enable auto power up when the TR-580 application is launched, and enable the new tracking feature OF THE TR-580. Please consult the TR-580 Quick Start Guide for information on how to use the device. This can be accessed by pressing the 'EMRG' button within the TR-580. Because of copyright reasons Tricorder TR-580 cannot and will not feature sounds from the original Star Trek movies. Disclaimer TR-580 is software THAT mimics a fictional device. Lot of Potential By: Mijhun - Nov 13, 2008 Version: 2.0 Things to change or add:
1) Background volume control on-screen.
2) Different background sound effects for different functions.
3) More of a 3D appearance for buttons, inlaid lights & screen, and a more metalic or textured look to replace the flat grey of the tricorder itself.
4) A larger display screen.
5) More animated screens, such as an MRI-like full body scan with a moving scanning bar; moving star charts, 3D organ or body parts scans that rotate, circuit boards, electro-mechanical looking devices (like an android arm), etc.
6) Ability for the user to add a few different lines of text in advance & have them displayed with certain buttons.
7) The flashing lights should be more varied (different colors & flash rates for different functions, etc).
8) Reduce the amount of unused background area by increasing size of screen, buttons, etc.
My son and I love it! By: cdavenport4 - Oct 13, 2009 Version: 3.2 Even though it's not perfect (It's close).... My 3 year old son and I plays, what he calls "Alien's" during brushing and flossing his teeth. This app has really save the day because he refused to have mommy brush and/or floss his teeth so, here comes daddy to scan for aliens in his teeth. Of corse I find some with the Tricorder and he wants me to get them out, then we run off to the Enterprise D and make our escape. I, myself a conservative Star Trek fan love this app. Thank You... I hope that you will continue to update it with new feature (even if they are paid features).
Brilliant! By: Steel Blade - 12-May-2009 Version: 3.0 Outstanding piece of programming. A cross between a real operating tri-corder and a simulation. The designer has used the iPhone sensors to bring real information into the machine. The Wikipedia access and the mapping are works of genius. I would imagine that anyone designing a real working machine would hire this guy immediately. Would like if there was some way to magnify the small text for people with not so good eyesight, but that is not a criticism.
Love this program

Star Trek Fan Must Have By: chrisbrennan1 - 09-May-2009 Version: 2.0 Version 3 blows all the other apps, not just star trek apps away. Graphics are fantastic, 6 scan types, dozens of info screens, in app links to wiki, GPS tracking to track your friends and location, direction and speed info, google maps in ap to see where you are, voice, bleeping sound on pressing buttons, as well as cool background sound. Developer is brilliant, always listens to feedback and continually adds extra features.
This App is a lot of FUN! By: Phdwho - Aug 9, 2009 Version: 3.1 I downloaded the Tricorder-580 yesterday and found that I couldn't hear any of the sounds! It looked GREAT on my iphone, but I still wanted the full experience. I reinstalled it and STILL the sounds didn't work. I finally e-mailed the designer, Mat, and he responded! Not only did he respond, but he did so within a couple hours of my initial e-mail to him! I'm new to the whole Iphone thing and Mat's solution (Try flicking the little switch on the top left side from OFF to ON) WORKED! Needless to say, I felt a bit foolish, but it's working just fine now! This App is SO much fun! And I have to admit the Fanboy side of me loves pressing all the buttons and hearing all the noises. I'm like a kid in a candy store. Granted, a thirty-eight year old kid, but a kid nonetheless. Also, I love the locator option. There's something really neat about seeing other users in the area who are using the same app. This is FUN!!!
Much better By: Daemon Sith - May 18, 2009 Version: 3.0 Great job. Vastly improved. I am glad to see that the app has been worked on. The web option is a cool idea but I would like to see it scaled to fit the window or switch to full width size. Keeping the height size is perfect but the width needs slight adjusting. Also I would like of have a library option where you could access your photo gallery. Would be really cool to display our own pictures in the window. Animated gif support would be epic. Do we could add our own screens in the window. Maybe an online album access? also an option to edit the random phrases. If you could set up profiles where you can add a pic and write a description and add it to a database that would be awesome. Just some ideas that could make the experience customized and possibly a site that we could post our custom work and we could browse and download others people post would be cool. Part of trek is the feel of community and adding support for that could really get a lot of interest. Also if we could upload our own sounds and assign them to functions that would be cool. (you know why LOL) but I just think a forum of custom stuff we could add would be awesome. And save you some work too. You did a great job with this app and thanks for the hard work and drive to keep evolving the experience. We are grateful.
MIND BLOWINGLY AWESOME! By: SebastianKunz - May 12, 2009 Version: 3.0 In a time when I'm a bit disappointed in changes in the new Star Trek movie, this new version of the TNG tricorder... I haven't seen ANYTHING like this before.
It brings up a real Google Maps Satellite view WITHIN the LCARS interface! Great graphics & Blinky lights that look really good! A delightful accent to the computer voice!
in short, this app really tickles that part of me that always wished for even a slightly functional LCARS app. it's MORE than slightly functional... it's fun and it looks like the real deal.
I'm a detail-oriented, hardcore obsessive TNG fan and this tricorder app passes the test! I very highly recommend it!

Great improvment in teh 3.0 version sound is 100% better By: cgabriel - May 9, 2009 Version: 3.0 This 3.0 update is 100% better. The sound is like the real Tricorder and not at all annoying like the original. Love the color and grapihcs. Wish the data screen was a bit larger and there were more buttons with sound to push like the Iscanner (which appears to have been taken down). Be sure to read the instructions by pushing the EMERG button this shows you how to access the cool library which links to the internet within the tricorder. Also locater is cool, wish the sounds still worked while in the internet library and location section. Like that the readout of scanning gives you information rather than just only flashing lights and sound. Good job.
Much, much better! By: Silvan27 - 10-May-2009 Version: 3.0 An extremely poor application BEFORE this upgrade, it is now vastly improved.
The interface and graphics are excellent and more detailed than before. This digital version of the tricorder looks very similar to the 'real' thing. With this updated version there is improved functionality, meaning that the buttons actually do something. Great idea to have the Google map and Wikipedia link into the interface. The sound effects are 100% better and they sound accurate this time (the only change I would suggest is to use the ratchet sound as the application opens and closes, instead of part of the scanning effect bundle).
Well worth the $0.99 to any Trekker.
Awesome, entertaining & fun app for the Trek fan By: Hardcore Trek Tek - Jun 6, 2009 Version: 3.0 This app is awesome. Wish the readout screen was somewhat larger as it is tough to read the info displayed. The overall graphical/ physical look, sounds and the real button functionality is great! The dimensional look of depth of the app/device is terrific. Have an idea, though. How about using the iPhone's/iPod Touch's accelerometer to open and close the tricorder similar to how it works on another Trek Tek app called Kirk's Communicator. That would make this tricorder even more authentic working. Would like to be able to sometimes easily edit/save comments that pop up during the various scan modes. How about the ability for using to send/receive emails via through the tricorder app interface? This is a really fun app to play with. Alot!!! Great, inexpensive and fun app for the Trek fan!

Yes! By: robkintheusa - Oct 15, 2008 Version: 2.0 An app which converts your iPhone into a Tricorder... brilliant!

I LOVE IT!!!! By: Does Nothing but cool idea - Sep 22, 2009 Version: 3.2 I LOVE THIS! ITS VERY REAL, FUN AND I LEARN THINS FROM STAR TREK LIKE SPOCK
Great Tricorder! By: Closet Trekkie - Sep 22, 2009 Version: 3.2 I actually bought this a few months ago, but the developer updates it often that it just keeps getting better! My only request is to add a coordinate locator or drop pin feature so I can navigate to something while using the tricorder (i.e. Geocaching with it).
TR580 By: MileHighMedic - Sep 22, 2009 Version: 3.2 Love it! I'm a SciFi nut and a Trekkie that finds this to be an excellent and entertaining application. As real as it gets so far. Looking forward to later updates!
Brings my inner geek out! By: Mr. Cheese28 - Sep 4, 2009 Version: 3.1 Now I know why I wanted an iPhone. So I can pretend I'm on an away mission during a meeting @ work. With my co-workers questioning my sanity.
Best Tricorder App By: Teknozari - 11-Oct-2009 Version: 3.2 Satisfies my inner Trekkie, and am pleased to be able to locate other fellow nerds using the GPS enabled scanner function. Memory alpha access was the cherry on the top of this replicated sundae ^___^
I have a tricorder lalala ;) By: lazoet - 22-Sep-2009 Version: 3.1 This is a fun app. Love the tracking, maybe it will help find lost crew at the mall. It does everything you could expect for an iPhone app of a tricorder. Seriously it's a pretend thing guys who wantmoreforthebuck. They didn't even dream of iPhones when they imagined the tricoder. If you loved star trek as a kid get it for fun.
Pretty awesome! By: bentkenobi - 14-May-2009 Version: 3.0 Good job! I dont know why there are some bad reviews for this. Its a fun, cool Star Trek app. About time someone made a tricorder app! Good sound effects that are close to the show. For $1.19 its a bargain!
