Best FPS so far for the iphone. (4/17/09)

After reading the notes for this game and seeing that co-creator of Wolfenstein John Carmack was the person that ported this came to the iPhone, I bought my first iPhone App from the store. He ported this perfectly. It runs very smooth, some of the graphics have been changed a little bit, but it doesn't lose the Wolfenstein feel.
I think this game works well with the iPhone since the controls can be limiting, and aiming for a FPS can be hard. Only having to point in the general direction works out well, but doesn't make this game too easy. (That's how it was in the original game) I would also like to mention for those that really like FPS games, that he added a strafe and turn style of control that you have to pick from the control options. It takes a little getting use to, but it is well worth it once you get it down.
Let's hope that he does a Doom/Doom 2 port now. =) Great game hands down and perfectly ported. Well worth the $5.00.

A Classic Revisited

What else can you say? It's the original Wolfenstein -- with all the right iPhone-appropriate changes -- and if you played the original, it's a no-brainer (if you haven't played the original, don't let the simple maze-design and older graphics fool you -- this is a true classic FPS and you will definitely get a kick out of it). The map is fabulous and the game offers two control schemes, both of which work well. I wish the controls were more customizable, particuarly size/placement, but there is nothing else, really, to complain about. The otherwise outdated graphics have some nice filtering that make them shine on the iPhone, and the performance is excellent. This is a great game and loads of fun.

FAN......TASTIC!

Nothing like firing up Wolf3D to bring back the memories of actually being good at a 3D FPS without trying. There's only 3 things that could make this game better -
1) Include the maps and levels from Spear of Destiny in the next update, because face it - Spear isn't worth $5 like Wolf3D is, and this game is going to end up being pure profit anyway (level design was done over a decade and a half ago, and how long did cobbling the iPhone engine together take?)
2) Open up the game for user-made maps and mods with iPhone OS 3. If there's enough community interest in this game, the mods will draw people in to buy the real version of this game and not the neutered light version.
3) Online Co-Op and Death Match modes with iPhone OS 3 as well.
Otherwise, yeah, it deserved 5 stars. (BTW John Camarack, if you're reading this, combine all of the DOOM episodes into one pack and include the Nintendo 64 levels with it.)

I was never a huge fan of Wolfie here. I know if it wasn't for it, my favourites would never have existed.
But I just couldn't get into it, still though I needed an FPS and when I saw this my eyes lit up.
Really good, works really well on the iPod, a lot better than I could ever have expected to be honest. And sticking with the honesty theme, while the controls will never take over mouse and keyboard, they work really well.
Although I'd like to see one more set in an update. Move bottom left, turn bottom right, fire top left, menu top right.
Because I'm so used to left moving, right aiming that I have to stick with those controls, but the way they are now, turning and firing is problematic.
Anyway, it can be fixed in an update, and it's still a 5 star game.
DOOM next please ID, that's the old school FPS that stole my heart, not this :)

Looking more like the Jaguar verson- how about higher resolution enemies next? :o)

I could only find one "flaw" in this port. It's missing the "Eva au wiederzhen" and Hitler falling into a pile of blood, followed by "Let's see that again!" and the Deathcam replaying the bloody demise of the demented dictator once more. The cut scene story text is missing as well, but hey other than that, I am nitpicking because I could find nothing else wrong with it :)
Other than that- what more could you ask? This is Wolfenstein 3D- in all its pixelated, blood stained, Nazi slaughtering glory!

John Carmack rules. Now, about the game - I like the control scheme a lot - right now I'm using option 3 which is like having dual analog sticks, with Fire in the top right. It's a bit weird to get used to at first (I prefer the rotating circles from iDracula because I get a visual cue as to how my fingers are reacting with the screen) but they work nonetheless. I find myself getting a bit motion-sick-feeling after about 30mins of play, so I'm still working out the best control scheme for me personally. The controls might need a bit of tweaking graphically, but other than that they're functionally very impressive. Also, there's just so much content in this game, it's one of the few games worth the money. The game itself is a fantastic port of the original, and Carmack deserves the revenue for releasing the game to us on this platform. Thanks a lot id!

First-time reviewer. This is a phenomenal game, and the update makes it just that much better!! It amazes me that this is on a PHONE/MP3 player, and that it's a flawless reproduction of the original!! If you grew up playing this game you should be ashamed of yourself if you haven't purchased it yet. The sounds are great, the graphics are stellar, the gameplay is wonderfully implemented on the iPhone, the game includes an extensive amount of levels to play, and there is nothing else I could ask for! Great job! Keep the quality mobile entertainmnt coming! ::patiently waiting for DOOM::

id have nailed the control scheme on this one! Really great fps that really feels at home on the touch screen, other devs can learn from this! Fingers crossed for Doom! Love that when I quit the app it quicksaves my position, allowing me to return to my exact position in game should I recieve a call. Oh and nice work getting this just below 10meg allowing me to buy this at lunchtime today! A must buy!

this is just amazing. It took me a very short period of time to get used to on-screen controls, and now I am able to move very efficiently. Amazing game, and graphics are not bad at all. It loads really fast, everything moves really smoothly, and after playing everyday for two weeks I can say that this is the best app so far as it NEVER, not even once, crashed. Thank you for bringing this amazing game.

I love this game. Gameplay is flawless. So far its very stable and the interface is okish. Still could use some work. I like how its customizable but I don't like how the numbers of bullets is above or below the gun button it self and how the life meteor is also on his head. I think they should be in there own panel... somehow.
Version 1.1 includes new features such being able to play your own music next to the game, improved graphics, changes between weapons, interface customization, and reverse landscape (180 degrees). Along with other fixes and improvements. This is a nice update, earning it a 5 stars. Keep it up, id!
Overall I think the game is great and wonderful to see id getting involved with the iPhone and iPod Touch.

 i love this game athough parts of it are not like my snes copy..... Still great game  New update: Tgis is the best game in the APPSTORE with the new update you can switcg weapons, the controls are easier and te graphics are better!!! The guns look AMAZING now!!!!  (updates: please update the game so it has the flamethrower and rocket launcher abd please i know i said that i liked the new graphics but please add a graphics toggle button.) WOWfenstein 3D!

WOW! I'm surprised, but the graphics have held up over the years and actually look better than what I remember on my friend's PC at the time. This is a classic game and while FPS have come a long way this port does a great job for being on the iPhone/iPod Touch. I'm happy that there are multiple control options, there should be one to satisfy most people. You can use motion control/tilting which is off by default as well to move/turn. I personally like the default controls and use the tilting to move left/right if needed. The only complaint I have with this port, which is minor, is I wish you could flip the screen 180 degrees as the headphone plug for my iPod Touch is in the way of my left hand. Hopefully id will fix this with an update. Another GREAT thing id has done is make available the source code to this iPhone port as well. (Source code available via id's website) However you will need to purchase the iPhone/iPod Touch version via the honor system to use the assets provided with the source code id has kindly provided. It is a small price to pay to make and learn how to create your own FPS on the iPhone/iPod Touch. If you want some FPS fun on your iPhone/iPod Touch Wolfenstein 3D Classic is it.

Treat the virtual buttons like a real ps or xbox controller. The game is a perfect port, and unlike a lot of iPhone games that you play for a week and then never again, it's got plenty of levels to keep you coming back whenever your girlfriend is in the changing room or trying on shoes.

This is one of those games that won't you just stock in the back of your iPod when you beat and you won't delete because it's paid for. THIS IS THE RETURN OF WOLFENSTEIN!!!! Two things: I think the d-pad should not be so sensitive did you notice that you can move like almost every direction which is cool but I would like it to just have up down left and right so it easier. Maybe a joystick for the turning so you know how far you are moving.

Buy the game! It's the same cost their original shareware version used to cost in stores. Only now you get the full version on your phone. The updates in version 1.1 are huge. Weapon switching, iPod music listening options, 180 degree device rotation for customizing how your hold the device and play the game, stat tracking, as well as higher resolution images. Wolfenstein is setting the standard for all forthcoming 3D shooters for the iPhone.
My only suggestions...

- Multiplayer (it didn't have it in the original, but it would be pretty cool to leverage the power of the phone and connectivity)
- Scoreboard
- Global Scoreboard
- Challenge / Taunt friends to beat your level completion stats
- Facebook Connect (opening up the game to communicate with social networking to promote the game further and issue challenges/taunts)

Perfection

This is truly an excellent port. I noticed that some reviews were requesting new weapons and better graphics. In my opinion, any changes like this would make the game worse. Those of us who played it extensively when it was new probably want the same experience. Having said that, it would be great to include the score and lives like the original. One last request/suggestion: when iphone 3.0 comes out, you should put Spear of Destiny as downloadable in game content. Great work on this title, id! Looking forward to DOOM!!

Historically Accurate

This classic game must be praised for its historical accuracy. My great-grandfather Franz -- who is alive and in his late 90s -- was a guard at the real Castle Wolfenstein during WW2. He still wakes up from nightmares yelling "Mein Leben!" remembering the day the now famous Captain Blazcowicz escaped from the supposedly impenetrable castle. He remains bitter about the fiasco and often explains to me (in a German accent), "Ven you leave chain guns completely unsecured, you're just asking for trouble. Lock dem in a closet! That vas our mistake." Naturally, I mute the sound when I play this game near him.
