Nice, easy to use, tip calculator for free. Can't beat that. Sure you can use the built in calculator app but if you want something to let you just plug in the bill amount, percent tip, and number of people, this does the job great.
Ignore the reviewers who either haven't used it or haven't thought about what they are saying:
* The app lets you use any percent tip you want. It doesn't limit you to 15%. You can even set the default tip percent which gets saved and remembered the next time you use the program.
* The reason tax is subtracted (duh!) is to let you compute tip before tax. Some people compute tips that way, others don't. If you want to compute tip on the entire bill (with tax included) just leave the tax amount at 0%. (Again, duh.) If you want to compute tip on the actual bill before adding tax, enter a tax amount and it figures everything else out. Really, very easy. I'm not sure why people are having a hard time with this. (Note that this only applies for "Expert" mode in version 2.0 since it no longer asks for tax amount unless you use Expert mode.)
*** Updated review for version 2.0 ***
* People who have complained about so-called "missing" functionality apparently didn't bother to look at the "Info" screen. (Honestly, people, at least *use* a program before you review it.) There is an "Expert" mode switch that takes you back to the original interface. Personally, I prefer the new one.
* The sliders seem to be easier to use than before. I had no troubles using the "Split X ways" slider which had caused problems for me before.
* The new icon is much nicer than the previous one.
The updates improve an already nice application. If you want a tip calculator, this one does the job well. And it's free.

Love this user-friendly app! I always eat out with a bunch of people and use this a lot! It's quick & easy, and it calculates tips before tax!! I like the wheel, it's so easy to scroll for the amount I want. Keep it up!! To be honest, I didn't notice the app until seeing people whine about it on the review. It's only about 1/10 of the screen, not bothersome at all. And I would have expected to see some ads in such a wonderful FREE app.

This app is useful when you're out to eat with a group of people. You enter the amount of the bill (before or after taxes, as you prefer; I usually tip on the total including tax) on a keypad. Then you select the percentage you want to tip and the number of people in the party. CheckPlease then tells you both the total amount of the tip per person and the total each person should pay. You can choose to round up the tip or not. I think the interface is terrific--everything is on one screen. If you're considering this app, you should be aware that a lot of the earlier complaints (particularly about the including tax/not including tax debate) have been addressed in later versions.

Great app! For folks complaining that anything under 15% shouldn't be included obviously haven't traveled internationally. Tipping is entirely different in Europe (where they are paid full wages), and giving 20% would be unheard of. Also, this app will calculate tips for services OTHER than food service, which vary greatly depending on the service rendered. So be careful when calling people "cheap" before you know how they might be using the app in ways that you don't yet know.

I am a bit confused. Why are there complaints over a icon? The blue dish is on a black background that blends into the background. Nothing wrong with the icon....nothing wrong with the calculations either. Click on getting info on your icon and you will see the shape on a BLACK table. I am using the lite and wonder what the difference is between lite and non lite?? Taxes change so much now that california has been raised. One town is NOT the same as the next so this is great to have on hand. Follow directions on support and you will be happy.

Easily the easiest to use of any tip calculator available. Instant gratification. Once you type in the meal amount the total and tip amount are displayed. There are no extra keystrokes or screen downloads. I would like to suggest that the decimal point float automatically in front of the digit second to the right. "5539" would be displayed as $55.39 and the tip and total calculated accordingly. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. The AppStore has changed how I traditionally made my living off of selling Newton, Palm and PPC software. Selling apps for a quarter of the price I've sold them on platforms without really that much in increased volume has forced me to test out other means of revenue generation. The advertiser had a pending ad launch date so I figured what the heck let's give ads in the app a try. There is enough push back against having ads in a freeware app that I will be releasing an ad-free version of CheckPlease ("CheckFree AF") and charging a buck for it for those that don't want to have ads in the application.

I put this application to the test and it performed flawlessly. I didn't have to remember any numbers, nor multiply, divide, add, or substract anything. I had the exact tip, total amount, and how much each person should pay right on the screen and instantaneously -- on top of that, it was a party of 20.
The only downside was that the application started up a little slow and the tax was a little confusing because it never really added up. I usually have tax turned off.
Regardless, this application deserved a 5 star. Great job, Catamount Software.

This is very nice tip app with an easy UI. I have noticed though that the app is calculating the wrong percentages. For example, as a test I put in a bill of $1,000 and selected 10% and 1 payer. The app returns $85 as the tip amount which is 8.5%. I also tried 20% on a $1,000 bill and the app returns $169 as the tip amount which is 16.9%. Edit: I erased the app and downloaded it again an the amounts are being calculated properly. Best free tip calc available (can't imagine the paid versions being much better). Kudos to the developer

This is superb! It gets you outta paying everyone elses share when you are just "splitting the bill" with friends for lunch or dinner ... The bonus to this app is that it's quick so you are not looking like you're fumbling with a calculator and it will tell you the tip amount fotcescj person divided as well. This one really does deserve 5 stars because it's clear that people can actually use this every day, not like some of those useless apps. Keep it free. This one is a Winner. Download this if you eat out with friends. It can save you time and money. I encourage you on this one. Thanks!

I used v2 while in the US and it worked a charm. This new layout makes it even easier to use and the fact that it is possible to revert the screen back to the old version is good. It is pretty much self intuitive the tip % and number of people sharing is not obvious on the new layout (need discreet labels perhaps).
I haven't noticed whether it shows £ or $ but for me it is just a decimal. Some people may need extra help with changing that currency sign to help them make sense of it. Still, it would be good if you can select the currency though, maybe as a next update, or have a help screen for those who may need it. I know that when I go to different countries, the coinage and notes always confuses me (for example which is a nickel, or a quarter or a dime - what it looks like and its cent value etc.) and whilst this falls outside of what this app does, it would definitely add to the appeal of a very nice app.

There are so many tip calculators for the iPhone, but I was unimpressed with most of them. Most have an interface that is a bit too complex - after all, all one is doing is calculating 15 or 20 % and occasionally dividing between a few people. This is not hard math - so to take the trouble to take out your iPhone, unlock it, launch an app, and then enter the data is not clearly an advantage unless it is quick. So the key is having a very quick way to enter the data and getting results without multiple screens and pop-up dials, calculators, etc.. With this quick and simple interface, it may actually be worth using.
ONE SMALL FIX NEEDED - Either a button to clear whole amt at once and/or have reset after closing to take new number without needing to delete first.

A great app with a few fixes and enhancements to be made

1) Need to be able to enter a tax percentage to 2 decimal places. Not sure how this got missed.
2) Exact and Rounded. Pressing the same button again toggles the calculation. What's up with that. Without making a conscious effort you do not know which calculation you are using. Don't tell me to look at the rounded numbers unless it can be guaranteed in life that an Exact calculation will never match a Rounded calculation. Look at the toggle button colour you say... ever try looking at black and gray through dark sunglasses, might as well have used black and navy blue for a toggle colour scheme. I'm fine with the colours, the calculation should not toggle unless I specifically press that button, this is a huge bug.
3) Could use a Clear button along with the Delete.
4) Should display tax percentage. I live close to several counties and the percentage changes, hate having to go to the info screen to get this information.
5) Should display Subtotal after tax is taken off.
A great app even if 3, 4 or 5 is not implemented, 1 and 2 definitely needs to be fixed. I like the fact that the slider was removed. Note to other TIP developers, the sliders are useless, there is always that one slider which is difficult to move. Using the wheel is much better, still sticks but not as often.

I rely on this app every day, below are some additions I'd love to see in a pro version: 1) The ability to enter in each person's individual items from your party-- calculating a total with tip/tax/liquor tax for each person because the bill is not split evenly. 2) The ability to keep a record of your tips-- so if you're always going to the same place and eating the same things you'll be able to pull up a quick reference guide. Keep up the good work!

Please add: #1 a default for number of guests. This is needed as most people will split a check between 4people/2 couples. Please do this just like you did with the abaility to enter default tax% and default tip%. #2 ability to enter more food/bev $ details in case one guest ate something more expensive therefore wants to pay a higher portion of the check. To many reviews on here from people who have not tried these app and people who don't understand you do not tip on tax - that's why the program takes tax out of the tip calaculation! Duh! The app is doing this correctly! I tried all the other tip calc Apps and this is by far the best, and it's free. LOTS if junk on the AppStore, this is one of the very few useful Apps. Try it!

The only iPhone tip calculator that correctly deterines tips (before sales tax)

I've always understood that when calculating a tip, the tip amount should be based on the the subtotal (the amount after removing tax). Of the iPhone tip apps that I've examined, this is the only own that does this.
I'd like to see some improvements, but overall I like this app, and it's free. I'd like to see improved sensitivity of the sliders and I think that the sales tax amount should be displayed with two decimal places instead of one. Where I live, the sales tax amount is 7.45%, but it is displayed as 7.5% (although the correct tax amount is actually calculated). The slider buttons could be larger, too, to make it easier to move them.
In closing, I like this app a lot, and I think we'll probably see improvements in the weeks and months ahead.

You FOOLS! Taxes are supposed to be subtracted, the developers did it correctly. Here's the best kept secret for those who don't eat out more than twice a year (only for your birthday and Mother's Day I suppose?) - Thou shalt not pay tip on taxes!! This means, whenever you think about how much tip to put down, look at the amount BEFORE tax, not the grand total including tax. A $113 bill needs $15 in tip, not $16.95 (assuming 13% for taxes).

Great App! I use it all the time! I don't know what those other persons were . . .

thinking! I have never had one problem with it. In fact it is better than any of the other tip calc out there in my humble opinion. I haven't seen very many that figure the tip correctly. That is, it should figure it before applying tax. This one does! Also, it is quick and easy to use when you are hurriedly trying to get a number so you can get that vinyl check holder to the wait person before they disappear for five minutes.

Addendum: The 3.1 version is not ad supported while the 3.3 version is. It places an ad at the top. While I understand that the maker is now wanting to make money, the ads are distracting and obtuse.
If you have the 3.1 version. Don't upgrade.

Great app, but....

This app does everything that it says it does, and DOES calculate the math correctly. The one function I wish it had (and would be willing to PAY for) is to be able to divide up the bill based upon what each person had to eat. This way, each user is charged ONLY for their food plus tip, and not the food of others (like the app does now by dividing the bill by the total number of people). PLEASE add this functionality!
