The move history feature is great. The fact that you have a week to make a move means ppl don't just quit cause they have to do something else, and I don't have to make any rush decisions. It looks good, it's easy to use. I've never made a mistake I could blame on the program. And it finds opponents really quickly. I don't even know if there's a limit to how many games you can have going at once. I'm pretty sure I've had like 30 on screen at one time. to all the whiney butts; Who cares about the stalemate issue, it's not like the match is recorded on any kind of permanent leaderboard. It's just for fun. If you end up in a draw resign and move on with your life. It would be good to be able to save good opponents as "friends" so you can play with them again. And like someone before me suggested, easy, medium, hard options for random.

This is a great app hands down. I love chess and this app lets you play with anyone from strangers to friends. You can also rematch people you enjoyed playing against which is nice. During a game (and after as well) you can chat with your opponent which makes the game more interesting, I think. It's fun to know that you are playing with someone halfway around the world from you. :) I also like that this version brought back the eyes so you know if you're opponent is there. My only suggestion would be if the developers could add a score board so you could see how you are improving (or not) and what your percentage is of winnings vs. losses. It would also be nice to see other people's scores. I know this is a big endeavor so I'm super happy with what the developer's have provided so far. Great job, I highly recommend Chess With Friends!

My favorite app so far. Just as you read before, if you love chess or want to get better, there is no other way I would reccomend!!! I have 10 games going right now. One request, could you update where you would a rematch option. I have been in many close games where a rematch with random opponents would be an option. Also, when searching a random opponent have a beginner, Inter and veteran. I have been in some situations where this would have come in handy. Other than that great app and great game!!! Makes you think

This is my favorite chess app. It delivers where others promise. I enjoy playing against real people not engines/bots. AND not all chess is blitz or 7 minutes without any time delay. I love the ability to review my old games and do a post-mortem. One minor gripe. The program numbers the moves "1 white, 2 black, 3 white" Instead of the traditional: "1 white, 1 black, 2 white". Not a deal breaker...but slightly annoying when reviewing old games.
I was wavering between, 4 or 5 stars. But decided to give the 5 stars because this is a 1.0 app and they decided to implement more features (CHAT!!)
Some essential changes needed:
1) Where's the draw offer button? It in all other online chess programs: ICC, Yahoo and Playchess. Like it or not, draws are a part of chess.
2) bug: 3 fold repetition does not result in a draw.
It should. It's a rule in the USCF and FIDE.
I didn't have a chance to check: 50 move and insufficient mating material draw needs to be included if not there already.
3) promotion bug: it would only let me choose between a Queen or Knight. It was missing Rook and Bishop.
Some minor changes wanted:
1) Instant rematch (and the ability to refuse)
2) Themed chess channels. A channel for ppl who only want to play 1. d4 or 1. e4. Or maybe matching ppl up someone who wants to Practice the French Defense and someone who wants to Practice against the French.
3) The ability to to email myself the saved games in a PGN format (or text in algebraic notation) so I can put in my database.

The application is perfect for correspondence chess. I just want to thank the designers. To those who want to keep record of your games there is as yet no way to export so you will have to record them on your own. Also, after you have a certain amount of games completed the older games drop off. This is perfect for the current I-phone. Whoever would take back moves would steal from his mother. This application is delightfully elegant. Wonderful design. Thank you!

Chess with Friends is a comfortable delight for casual chess play, a remarkable hybrid between real-time and postal chess, well integrated as a phone application.
I do wish that old games could be deleted (if they can, I don't know how). I would also like this (or the excellent hosted-game application Versus Chess) to support the Internet Chess Club (ICC)), but Chess with Friends has chosen its niche and fills it splendidly as is.

This is without a doubt, the most thoughtful iPhone game I have come across. And I have almost every game, so I feel I stand on terra firma from I base my judgement. If you love chess and are rated below ~1400, don't waste your time with Cassai Chess, or even some of the free ones. This is so much more enjoyable. Now that it's provided free for a while (which has helped ramp up users already- I rarely wait for a game to start) it's a no-brainer. Install this and put it on your first screen of icons. My only suggestion is to have a W/L record that's viewable to others. Please don't try to implement a whole ELO rating system in though. Ppl will start to leave unfinished games in limbo so they don't take a hit to their rating. Or make it so if someone doesn't respond in 2 days, it's an automatic loss. Thanks for releasing such a great app.

5 stars because it is very good and free. There are 1 thing that I wish for. 1. A notes section so I can make a quick note of what to do next as opposed to going over the game history. This would make things a little easier since I have many games open and some are only played one a day.2. Some way to make a person forfeit if they don't make a move in a long time, so the game doesn't just sit there.Great app though!

This game is seriously incredible. I always have 5 or so games going at once. This game is worth every penny I paid, you will not regret this app, there are always people online looking for games! You will be come a chess master. The only thing that I suggest is the ability to chat during games, or communicate in some manner. I seriously spend more time on this game than any other game I've ever bought.

This is by far one of the greatest apps. The ability to play a game over several sessions is genius. And the next updates such as playing with the computer is needed. This is a great chess app for anyone and gives the iPhone exactly what it needs. Download Now :) fast, fun and fluid ** Suggestion ** we should be able to send messages to our random opponents. I think that would add more human interaction. Complements, trash talk all that good stuff in good sport :D ** Suggestion 2 ** more chess board skins.

welldone, newtoy a simple interface that loads quickly and let's you take your time with your moves. you play multiple opponents at once. random opponent finds you a buddy. there's chat and all that. it's on my home screen and I play it constantly. only things I would change is the number of games you can play at one time and maybe if there was a lobby where you could chat and find friends. but the app being free and all makes this a badass app. 9000/9001 stars search "boxxy" to play a game with me

This is a great app. My GF and I play it all the time, and I really can't think of any faults. Amazing that it is free. You can play multiple games at one time with random opponents, and it's got some nice touches, like a pair of eyes when your opponent is deciding their next move. Never crashes, loads fairly fast. You can even get texts and emails when it is your move. The syncing is also very fast after you make a move.
Highly recommended.

This game does exactly what it purports to do: offer online chess matches with friends and strangers. It also does it very well. The interface is excellent. I could not have designed it better or asked for any other type of design. The actual play is fantastic as well. In my opinion, it earned the five stars I've given it all other issues aside (see below). Battery life is drained quicker than normal but this is expected of an application that refreshes the current game state with the server it's connected to. As a result, I don't consider this a draw back but it's something to be aware of.
Some things that could use improvement: Be able to cancel/drop games without resigning. Do not ask for my mother's maiden name and my mobile phone number when I sign up. I gave it a bogus mother's maiden name and you have the option of not providing your telephone number. I did not provide mine. They promise not to divulge the information to anyone but I don't trust any company with my private information regardless of what they promise to do with it. You might think about providing an anonymous way to communicate in-game with your opponent.
One last thing ... I was a little irritated that I paid for the application and then they sent me an email saying, essentially that they were going to be giving it away for the next few days. I'm glad I was able to finance someone else's free games.

This is deffinately the best money I have spent on an iPhone app so far. You can play with random people hype up your skill, then play with your friends and kick their butts, or get yours handed to you. I have downloaded the other chess apps and so far this is defginately the best. No bugs so far, just seems like an incredible app that has jumped to #1 on my favorites list of iPhone apps. I love chess with friends!!!

This app is great, kudo's to the developers. I can have multiple games going. Without being stuck at the board. I do wish the alerts are more substantial, meaning that I will know when it's my turn if I am no longer in the app. I find myself signing back into the app just to find out if Its my turn. Then if I didn't make a move yet the the app will show it's my turn. But either way it's a great play.

I absolutely LOVE this app! Only thing (well one of the things) I'd like to see is a tally at the top of the screen. And maybe the ability to enter the name of my friend that I'm playing in the handoff mode. Other than that, everything works as advertised. Oh, and the eyes means that the other player is looking at that game at that moment. One last thing. I would like to be able to send a comment when a player made a nice move on me, or to congratulate the victor on a well played match. Preset comments would be fine, just something that's traditional with chess. Update (2.0): I miss the eyes. Several others have commented on this as well. It's nice to see active players. Chat is great! Last move boxes are distracting! Please turn those off. That's what the move arrows are for. If you want to see the last move made (if you missed it when the game loaded), use the arrows. Also very useful to track your strategy when playing several games (I use this tons since I play 20 something games at once). Stalemate is working. And is it true that you have 48 hours before auto-resignation? Please extend that to 100+! A week worked well. Glad to see everything back up and running. Keep up the good work! UPDATE: The EYES are back! Thank you! UPDATE: Love the fading last move indicators! Well done! But I have games started in 2.0 that are over 7 days old. I think you still need to tweak that functionality. Thanks. RECOMMENDATION: Place settings button in top left. Accidentally keep pushing it. Thanks.

Finally the killer app. I played during the beta and I'm now convinced that this is the perfect game for the iPhone. Chess is great, but the revolutionary aspect of 'Chess With Friends' is that I can play with others on my own time. I keep several games going at once. When ever I get a few minutes I check my games and make a move if it's my turn. I play it so often that I finally moved it on to my dock. Awesome. Thank you!

I'd love to see some of the suggestions implemented, but this is still a phenomenal app. I'm just starting and this allows me to learn without having to hound my friends for a game! I just wish there was a way to play against other newbies like me and I'm sure the hardcore players out there would rather not waste their time with people like myself! The option of a ranking system and the automatic draw, move notifications, etc would make this the perfect app.

I've tried several other chess games, this one is the best (if you don't mind pbm style)

The only downside to CwF is how long each move often takes, but that is also the beauty of it. Play 10 games at once and take your time between each move.
The interface is great, very user friendly.
I'd like to see a few additions such as: 1. timed play, 2. chess variants, 3. email or txt (user option) when moves are made against you, 4. the app icon to change on its own, instead of just once you have started and exited the program (right now, it only functions as a reminder of your current moves that you have already seen), 5. more boards and pieces, 6. ratings and win/loss records, 7. ability to save memorable games.

my favorite chess app by far. this allows you to make your move, close the app, and come back later. my friends and i all have iphones because we have hectic schedules, so we rarely have the time to sit and play a whole game. it is surprising more games arent paced like this due to the very fact iphones are choice for busy people. so what im saying is.... any chance we can expect an othello game from you guys any time soon?
