*** Comfort Food***
Merriam Webster explains comfort food as food prepared in a traditional style having a usually nostalgic or sentimental appeal. In this way, the food which people eat when they are sad or worried, often sweet food or foodstuff that people ate as children is a comfort food.
Comfort foods are usually home-cooked and eaten in informal ways or at relaxed positions. They are foods that are often emotionally significant to a person or group of people and are sometimes related to pleasant memories.
Comfort food is typically inexpensive, and easy to prepare. Many people eat comfort food because it is generally easily digestible, tasty and flavorful.
Various foods or snacks could fill the urge for a comfort food depending on a person's taste, but in any given culture or cuisine there are foods that become widely accepted comfort foods.
At individual level, a particular memory, trauma, situation, environmental setting and even mood can affect the urge or need of a particular food. The composition or ingredients and even ways and means to enjoy comfort food might have biological linkage with varying sensitivity to food.
Favorite home-made comfort foods in the US include chocolate cake, meatloaf, macaroni and cheese, mashed potatoes, twice-baked potato, applesauce, fried chicken, chicken soup, pizza, peanut butter, ice cream, bacon, chicken and dumplings, eggs, and hash browns for breakfast. Many creative mixes of foods have emerged that people term as comfort foods. Some also would consider potato chips as comfort food.
Comfort food may refer to childhood favorites that are still enjoyed in adulthood, such as boiled eggs and soldiers (the soldiers being buttered toast cut into strips and dipped into the egg yolk). Stews, sausages, mashed potatoes, puddings and sometimes Ice cream is a comfort food choice in the UK.
Different studies about comfort food trends say that craving ice cream, for example, may stem from a desire to recapture carefree childhood days. Similarly, aside from a shared love of ice cream, men and women long for different foods.
While women tend to yearn for sweet dishes or chocolate, men usually seek hot dishes like pizza.
Psychologists trace interesting linkages between comfort food habits and peoples’ yearnings. For example, they say, men are more likely than women to find steak comforting, as it reinforces a traditional, macho personality.
