Description:
“Can I gush? RunKeeper is the coolest freakin' iPhone application ever.” – Rick Broida, CNET “RunKeeper is a Nike+ for runners, cyclists, and more.” – Chuck Lawton, WIRED “RunKeeper is like Nike+ for your iPhone, only better.” – Adam Pash, Lifehacker ____________________________________________ RunKeeper uses the GPS technology found in the iPhone 3G/3GS to track your fitness activity, giving you comparable results to an expensive GPS watch at a fraction of the cost. Now, you can also enter your activities manually, including your treadmill runs too! The intuitive and easy-to-use interface of the app makes it easy to track how far you went, how long it took, what your pace/speed was, how many calories you burned, and the path you traveled on a map. Once your activity is completed, the data is synced to the RunKeeper website (www.runkeeper.com) where you can view a history of all of your activities, and cumulative totals of all of your vital stats. You can also share your progress with friends by posting your activities to Facebook and Twitter, and creating a profile page that allows people to view all of your public activities. ** RunKeeper is only compatible with the iPhone 3G/3GS ** Features: * Activity Tracking No need for an expensive, standalone fitness tracking device when you can use your iPhone 3G or 3GS to do the same thing. Now you can track how far you went, how long it took you, and the route you traveled right from your iPhone * Personal Dashboard Store all historical activities on runkeeper.com, where you can keep track of totals and monitor your progress * Maps integration See the exact path you traveled on a map, both on the device and on our website * Activity Sharing Share your activities with friends via email, or by posting them to your favorite social sites, including Facebook and Twitter * Music You can listen to the iPod during your activity, and even change tracks without leaving the RunKeeper application * Manual Activity Input You can enter activities manually, including runs done on a treadmill or without your iPhone

Reviews:
Never been this motivated in my life. By: Matthew Couto - 21-Aug-2009 Version: 1.6.0.10 I absolutely love RunKeeper! I have recommended to so many people, including listening of my podcast. I started with the free version which was more than enough to get started, but had to move to the paid version if for nothing else than to support the developer. I love going for my morning walks now and have already lost a couple of pounds with this app. Once you have a good application to track your workouts you want to do them more often, and eating healthy follows quickly behind. Great work guys!
Better than Runkeeper Pro By: Paul-asdfghjkl - Jul 3, 2009 Version: 1.4.8.2 I just posted a negative review of Runkeeper Pro because of how often the new version crashes so I figured it was only fair to post a glowing review of Runkeeper Free. This program is great and I never had any trouble with it. I used it for quite a while before buying the pro version because the pro verion is fairly expensive for an iPhone program. I've frequently regretted paying for Runkeeper Pro, but I highly recommend Runkeeper Free. If you run outdoors you should definitely give it a try. BTW, it works fine with playing music from the iPod, I don't know what that other review was talking about. Probably that person just doesn't know how to use their iPhone.
Great all round tracking app By: oo00_Mr_K_00oo - Jul 1, 2009 Version: 1.4.8.2 I use this application 6 times a week to record my rides to & from work. It's fantastic. For those saying you can't use iPod - that's utter rubbish. Simply turn your iPod on, then close it and launch RunKeeper - the iPod keeps playing. Use the remote on your headphones to pause, skip, etc as you'd expect. I do have some issues with GPS sensitivity, I don't think that is the app, but rather Vodafone NZ's crap 3G coverage, however RunKeeper's website sync allows you to quickly edit your map path & correct for glitches. The App can take a little while to grab hold of the GPS location, but once it does it's pretty solid. With iPhone 3.0 you no longer have to have the screen ON all the time, that's GREAT, battery life is hugely increased. Highly recommended!!
Very Pleased By: ActiveSD - Jun 25, 2009 Version: 1.4.8.2 I don't know why people are making negative comments. I used it on a 45 minute run with my music playing and I still had half my battery life.
It posted elevation, speed, accurate location, and shared everything online including to Facebook seamlessly. It also calculated calories and had options for hiking which I will try next.
Nice free app. Just lock your phone to save battery life or reduce your brightness settings.
Great app, one of the best By: chase14 - Jun 23, 2009 Version: 1.4.8.2 I am so glad I forgot to purchase a Nike + shoes the other day to use with my new 3Gs. I figured I would try this app and it works great. Three runs so far and the mileages are very close to the accual, I CAN listen to music while I use this app, the website feature is great, and it saved me well over $100 on Nike products. As long as the data stays consistent I will upgrade to the pro version just to pay something for such a great app.
Great, well-designed app By: archie03 - Jun 14, 2009 Version: 1.4.8.2 I've used this app for a couple different activities, mainly cycling but also for hiking, and i have to say that it is wonderful! it is so neat to be able to see your trip data right then and analyze it later in the dashboard. Also, contrary to a previous review, you can listen to music on it, just have your ipod playing before you start. hopefully with the 3.0 software, the developers will incorporate the real maps api's and incorporate some kind of ipod control in-app. wonderful app, by far!
One run and I loved it By: CaliGirrl101 - Jun 5, 2009 Version: 1.4.8.2 I have run with a Timex regular running watch, the Nike plus with Nano, and the Timex ironman HRM, which is the one I prefer and use most often. I haven't purchased the Timex download setup due to poor reviews and high price. I find that the watches for the ironman last about a year, then I have to buy another complete setup. At each watch failure, I research the latest in Garmin and Polar GPS and HRM watches, and have tried unsuccessfully to convince myself that they are worth the $$.
Tonight before a run I downloaded this free app. I did a read of the instructions, signed up for web dashboard, tested the app during a quick walk to the mailbox, and then went on a run using it with a playlist in iTunes. Since I don't have an armband yet, I tucked it in the center back pocket in my shorts and took off. After a couple of minutes I couldn't resist looking at the display. The speed was fluctuating between 630 and 14 min per mile. I immediately thought this app must be a dud and placed the iphone back in the pocket. At the finish, I stopped the app, and to my pleasant surprise I noticed that the distance of my route was dead on, as was the pace. Very nice.
Post-run, I took a look at the map and saw that the split distances were also accurate. Then when I looked at the online dashboard I was completely blown away by the pace, split, and distance info provided. The elevations were off, but I am not as concerned with having accurate vertical profile info. I noticed that there were a couple of inaccurate peaks and valleys in the mile per minute pace that I had observed during the run, but overall it averaged out in the pace splits. I believe this is common to most if not all GPS.
Now I do miss the HRM info but think the online tracking of the maps, routes, splits, and pace for each workout outweighs having the last couple of runs worth of HRM data on my watch. I reviewed the users forums and saw that of the requests for future features included is the HRM function, as are most features of the Polar and Garmins also requested. It will be cool to see what other functionality will be added.
I am going to upgrade to the paid version because the free version is worth the price as I have seen many other reviewers indicate they have done the same. I would recommend any runner give it a test run.
so far so good By: villafandan - Jun 3, 2009 Version: 1.4.8.2 I've recorded 4 fairly short hikes and am impressed. I had a problem the first time as I couldn't get a good GPS signal and it recorded 15 miles in 5 mins!! The map showed me zig zagging all over the place, even back and forth across a wide river.
The "climb" data has been poor so far, showing at least 50 vertical feet difference between start and finish points despite them being one and the same!!
Motivation for reluctant runners By: hannahspencer16 - 23-Sep-2009 Version: 1.6.0.14 I'm not normally one to rate/review apps but the brilliance of this one urges me to do so in this case. I am a reluctant runner trying to keep in shape and need as much motivation as I can get. I find that the GPS works all of the time, even out in the sticks. I love that it automatically uploads the information onto the website. I find that the list of my activities urges me on to build my portfollio of exercise. Can't be faulted; what's better is that it is free.
Simply amazing By: X98bak - May 20, 2009 Version: 1.4.8.2 I was about to buy a 300$ gps watch from garmin and thought "hmmm I wonder if there is an app for that". Sure enough there was. I dowloaded the free version and tracked my first run today.
Even though I didn't need too the pro version was the first app I paid for to support this amazing app. Developers did a great job. This app just paid for the phone.
Finally this app makes you want to run more, faster, and take new routes.
Best app on iPhone by FAR!

Accurate, Detailed and Just Works By: JamGT - May 19, 2009 Version: 1.4.8.2 I just downloaded and used this app for the first time. It worked excellently. Turned off the wifi and dimmed the screen like I heard I should. Ran about 30 minutes - no issues. Got my path right, distance tracked well, mapped nicely on Google Maps. Love it. Love the details of the information - it is obvious this was designed by runners. I also use Nike+ on a Nano and I love the data from this app a lot more. Yeah, Nike has a hugh budget and their graphs are sexy, but they are also more resource intensive and show less information. Great app guys. Next stop, RunKeeper Pro. Thanks.
Best running app available By: SageRunner - May 2, 2009 Version: 1.4.8 I've tried several other running and fitness apps - including paid apps - and this is by far the best. The automatic uploading is a terrific feature, and the integration of the Goggle map with the speed and elevation analyzer is amazing. I get all the data I need to keep track of my progress, even calories burned! I was pretty happy with another app called Trails, and I almost didn't bother trying this one - I only tried it because it was free. I'm glad I did! This beats Trails by miles! I have pages of apps on my iPhone, and this will definitely be the one I use most!
absolutely brilliant By: Tejhog - 22-Aug-2009 Version: 1.6.0.10 I've never felt compelled to write a review for an app before, but this one is so outstanding i needed to add my rating. Runkeeper is a fantastic service, turn it on when you go out and log in to the online 'dashboard' when you get in... it keeps track of all your past activity, times, speeds, elevation etc as well as maps of where you've been. It really is superb, by far the best app i've come across. Only one point, the name 'Runkeeper' is slightly misleading, i use it for cycling.
Easily the best app out there By: obelix74 - Apr 12, 2009 Version: 1.4.8 I really like RunKeeper. Liked it enough that I purchased the pro version. I have a few thousand words review comparing this with other applications here. http://bit.ly/Zc3U. - It is developed by a runner, so the features all have a nice touch that gears it towards runners. For instance, the lock button turns over the screen so when you are using an armband, you can easily read the stats. - The fonts are big and nice and easy to read. - Their customer support is phenomenal. I usually ask questions through twitter at @runkeeper and I get a response within minutes. - The only 'failure' I had with this after about 20 runs is on a very very very cloudy day when iPhone GPS did not work. NONE of the other GPS apps worked as well, so it was not limited to RK. - The software evolves continuously and RK team is very receptive to your suggestions. Any gripes you have might be addressed sooner than later. - Those who have problems with GPS connectivity, please check the RK forums for suggestions. In many cases, turning off WiFi would help a lot. In short, I have spent 100s of $ for software that I use regularly, but RK Free and Pro have given me the best bang for the buck out of ANY software I have used, iPhone app or not.
Tremendous app By: Jsgguehdjdudhdjrjd - Mar 21, 2009 Version: 1.3 Don't bother with rk pro this is all you need! Extremely handy and accurate. I just started running and quite frankly I am pumped to have such a great app that gives me so much info and records all my runs. Great for tracking progress. Ads aren't a problem, and I have no need for a voice update (I just glance at my arm) so I have no use die the paid version. This is a must have for anyone that wants to document their runs or rides or hikes.
Incredible Fun! March 11, 2009 By: JaySauce - Mar 12, 2009 Version: 1.3 Okay, so I actually had this, it didn't work, deleted this, then added it again, then it didn't work, then I deleted it, Then I decided one last time: AND IT WORKED! I had to Reset the iPhone (Hold the Home Button, and the Sleep Button on top, Slide to Shut Down); Then I had to play around with the settings, I turned off the gps filter and it WORKED!, just because it says 3G on your phone doesn't mean it is a strong signal, but lowering the filter at least gave me an estimate, I don't care if I run 1 mile or 1.1, I finally know how much I'm running! I haven't used the web app, but that really isn't me, I'll buy the Pro Version once I get the funds, to show my support, very elegant program. Me: I hate running, some dude in a rating does 50 minutes of running!? HOLY COW!!!! I am the body builder type, do it because my BMI says I'm obese, yet there really isn't much fat on me. I NEED TO RUN SO MY HEART CAN KEEP UP WITH THE MUSCLE. But, it's SO boring. But not with This RunKeeper, 20 minutes tops, and really neat. I had to put that out there. I tried TraQmy.Self, something similar, not as fun, and Drains battery like a mofo. An App to keep. Great job guys!
David By: Ratrunner - 09-Jul-2009 Version: 1.5.0.7 If this program rather than the Pro version were to be £5.95 it would be cheap. For free it is unbelievable. I'm just learning to run for a half marathon and tried a vareity of devices to measure progress and improvement. This is marvellous. Far bettrethan anythng else I have tried. I shall be upgarding to the Pro version. Not because I especially want the voice prompts. Rather I feel I should pay for what I have. Thank you
Good product on the whole...but By: Sidh1982 - 29-Jul-2009 Version: 1.5.0.7.3 This product has attempted to knock my Nike+ iPod sports kit away but thus far hasn't been able to do it although I've used the product only 4 times out of which I've been walking 3 times and jogged once. The timing and distance have been quite alright (assuming they'd be right) but still it doesn't seem to acquire the GPS signal well and hence the mapping hasn't happened after my first walk. For now, I am still sticking on with my Nike+ kit... But I'm sure the guys at RunKeeper are working on solutions for any problems... I would highly recommend this product for those who do not have their Nike+ iPod sports kit yet...
Best Free App' So Far By: Jimdr001 - 11-Jun-2009 Version: 1.4.8.2 I have had my iPhone 3G now for about 10 months and this is the best app I have installed and it's free. Any previous issues seem to have been ironed out with this version because it has operated faultlessly. The downloaded app is only half the deal, upload your runs to the website for free and follow your route on google maps with a full yard by yard breakdown, superb. Not only that the forums and tutorials are full of support. If you have an iphone 3g and this app, you dont need any other gps based training software.
This App works Really Well ... Supports my Data Obsession By: Pben - Feb 5, 2009 Version: 1.2.1 I have used RunKeeper Free for about 4 weeks and it works really well in our 3g poor area in the heart of Silicon Valley - go figure. I run all over this regional park next to the SF Bay including hills, dirt and paved trails. Even though I've had it cut it, it never loses the route. I like the web based storage and I like the fact that the developers are busy with a new version, taking in requests from their growing base. I plan on upgrading to Pro when the next release comes out since now I'm hooked on all the good data it provides.
