Description:

The company, known for its premium paints and as the No. 1 color source for designers and architects, is debuting ben® Color Capture™, an iPhone application that, with the tap of the screen, lets you snap a picture of any color inspiration, anywhere in the world, and instantly match it to one of the more than 3,300 hues that comprise Benjamin Moore’s color system. And since color touches us everyday, everywhere, ben Color Capture allows you to save your favorites for instant color coordination and comparison. What’s more, the new ben app can access the iPhone’s GPS system, locating the Benjamin Moore retailer nearest to wherever the user is at that very moment.
The Ben app is intuitive and easy-to-use. Simply glide a finger across the digital photo taken with the iPhone’s built-in camera, zoom into a color, and tap the “match” key. In just seconds, a strip of colors will appear below the photo, with the closest paint match highlighted. A simple shake of the phone and ben will provide up to four coordinating colors, creating an entire harmonizing palette based on the original selection. Favorites can be saved and enlarged to the size of the iPhone screen for easier viewing. There’s access, as well, to the full spectrum color wheel, which expands or contracts by fingertip control to focus on a color preference. That, too, can be translated into a Benjamin Moore color and saved as a favorite for future reference.
Please note that the on-screen color representations are not necessarily precise representations of actual paint colors due to variance in displays. You may bring any color chip numbers to your local Benjamin Moore retailer to match and/ or order the exact color you are looking for.

very impressive!!  rating of Ben Color Capture

My wife, a painter and illustrator, is also a color nut. She has color books for every brand of paint that is available locally. If you've ever seen one of thee things, you know that they're huge, heavy, and can be quite expensive ($20 is typical). Ben Color Capture has Benjamin Moore's color book built into it, and that by itself makes this a great app. The color identifier is very useful for "in this light, this color appears to be..." analysis. And fun, useful, handy app. Oh, and its free!

They're just not spending the time to figure out the app. After you take a photo an choose to use it, you have to touch the area of the photo you want. If you don't touch the photo it will stick to the default colors in the center and never change regardless of how many pictures you take. In the few pictures I've taken this has really helped. The app is good. It's just specific to painting. Whch it should be.

Stop complaining  rating of Ben Color Capture

Pretty handy When you use the capture, it offers a variety of colors that come pretty darn close and you can take it from there. Just for fun I did ketchup, grass, carpet, water, etc. Worked pretty well. Everyone who is whining is expecting way to much from a free app. So many factors affect the capture....lighting, etc. It's not going to paint your house for you. I could see this being helpful for picking out furniture, fabrics etc.

Good app that could use some small enhancements  rating of Ben Color Capture

The color recognition feature isn't perfect, especially with the iPhone 3G camera. If you use a better camera and save the picture, it works better. The lighting obviously has a big impact ... try taking the pictures in good difused light and the results will be better. Also, if you select different parts of the picture, you get closer to the colors you want. This tool is really a starting point, not a perfect match tool ...
I would suggest to the ben dev team, that the color wheel should be a rotatable ball as opposed to the current circle and that it should be zoomable so that you can get closer to the colors you want, especially with big fat fingers ... It would also be really nice to have a color search feature so that you could look up existing color names and numbers and get the strip and harmony colors from there ... even cooler ... the ability to search comparable colors based on the competitions color palets. One other feature that might be nice, once you've found a color using the wheel or selector, being able to move up and down through the color strip book so that you could see other close strips ... so if I found color 2071-20, by flicking up on the strip (instead of left right) I could move to the next strip down to find my desired color 2072-20.

A fine tool for the trade.  rating of Ben Color Capture

I work at a independent paint store dealing with both contractors and homeowners. Ben color capture is a great utility for finding a wonderful collection of colors to harmonize any area of a home. I never expected that either the iPhone or application would be as accurate as the spectrophotometers used in the back room where the real mixing magic happens. However, this application has a real value in the field and working with the customer in the store.

Ben Moore App Fun  rating of Ben Color Capture

Fun!! Just take a picture of anything, tap an object in the pic and the program shows matching swatches of colors at the bottom of the screen. If you find a color you like, save it to your favorites. I took a picture of a 'still life' oil painting that I like, a Tuscan style fruit and wine painting with bricks, wood, and stucco in the background. I tapped on grapes and it showed me matching shades of mauve, purple, and gray. I tapped on green leaves and it showed near perfect matches in the green family. I tapped on a wicker basket and it showed matching colors of wheat and straw. I could actually imagine which wall color would best complement the painting. It's fun. The only down-side is that true color is difficult to capture with a camera and varies with available lighting, time of day, etc. But keep experimenting. My oil painting colors were pretty accurate. BTW it's free. What do u got to lose?
