No complaints but a suggestion...  rating of Vicinity
By: bedbuggie - 23-Aug-2008

Love the application, impressed with the sources of information for obscure UK locations. Two suggestions: 1. It would be useful to known some of the obscure sources, so that errors can be corrected. 2. It would be an excellent new feature if the location service could be overriden to allow manual location selection - allowing users to 'preview' ahead of their journey - I seldom travel somewhere without first booking a hotel, but still need access when planning the itinerary. Hope the developer is listening!

I Don't Believe It!  rating of Vicinity
By: REVPJF - 19-Aug-2008

Having trusted reviews for other apps, only to be disappointed, it was a pleasure to explore this little utility. A measure of it's success was the smile it created whenever I discovered something new. It works very well with other info - safari and maps, as well as web based info such as wikipedia and flikr. The only thing I thought was missing was a fuel category for nearby places - but that's no big deal. Apart from my wife's wedding ring that was the best £1.79 I've ever spent!

Brilliant concept - great value  rating of Vicinity

Can't believe how good this is, or how negative some people are being for it not being absolutely perfect. Apart from the convenience stores the lists it provides have been very accurate around London and on the South Coast. Even if the distances aren't as reliable as you'd like it still provides you with telephone numbers so you can easily contact the establishments to ask for directions or clarifications. This is an excellent back-up device for when you aren't sure of an area or even to learn more about areas that you think you know!

Better than the rest  rating of Vicinity

This app is incredible; it's much more accurate than yelp, and it has more information than ypmobile. It's worth the price, get it. You'll find things you never even knew existed in your area. Take it from me, I only live in a town of 12,000 and it had EVERYTHING. Other apps didn't have as much information. If it's that accurate for smaller towns, it's sure be one incredible app. All it needs are the phone numbers, and I would delete ypmobile. Crashed on nearby places, but I rarely shut off my phone; my memory is most likely full. Definitely download this app.

Looking around your Vicinity look no further  rating of Vicinity

I am totally blown away by this application. Information is up to date and accurate. I can see this becoming my one-stop-shop for information when I travel. I have used it in several Midlands locations using 3G and it is excellent. Well worth the money. UK content is excellent unlike some other applications. Links phone numbers, maps, useful information listed on Wikipedia about your place etc. together to give you a great resource. Totally brilliant and well worth the money!

Need GPS coordinates?  rating of Vicinity
By: A pleased paramedic - Oct 8, 2009
Version: 2.0.5
I'm a paramedic and I honestly can't say I use this app for anything else except getting GPS coordinates to land a helicopter. I have no positive or negatives to say about the rest of the functions. This app is very accuracte in giving GPS coordinates. It's very fast too, coordinates pop up almost instantly! It has never crashed on me. Its much faster than commercial GPS devices. A must have for any firefighter or paramedic!

It's the App the iPhone 3G was made for...  rating of Vicinity
By: Swampson - 19-Jul-2008
Version: 1.00
This is a great little app, that does exactly what it says on the tin... finds stuff in your vicinity.
Yeah it makes the odd mistake, and the detractors need keep in mind it gets it's info from the internet.. so it can only be as accurate as the stuff that is out there on the net.. it's not really the apps fault.
It seems some of you really think it comes preloaded with this huge database of stuff near you!?!?... It doesn't!
Neither is it the app's fault if your iPhone/iPod Touch can't locate you... it isn't the app that does the locating, it's the hardware... if you get an innacurate loaction it's probably down to your phone, touch or your indoor location!
*GPS doesn't work too well indoors!*
On which note i would expect some variable results with the iPhone 2G and the Touch simply due to the fact they don't have any kind of GPS locating!

Surprisingly good  rating of Vicinity
By: jamiebishop - 19-Jul-2008

Read some reviews of this and thought I'd give it a go for the small cost. Really impressed with the results, I tried it in a little village and a larger town here in the UK, both with great results. Accurately shows the nearest pubs, cafes and convenience stores and also has lots of interesting info about the local area that I never knew.
Think it could have a few small improvements like reviews for the restaurants. Overall though great app.

Works Great!!!!  rating of Vicinity

Tried all the rest of these types of apps and none of them did the job that Vicinity does. I read all the reviews and though those individuals may have suffered from some mishaps I however suffered from none of them. This application has come in handy so many times and every time it has led me to either a great place to eat or a cool point of interest. I travel a lot and I really put this app to the test and it came through for me every time - east coast and west. Well worth the money!

I Love it  rating of Vicinity
By: cverrier - 17-Jul-2008
Version: 1.00
This application goes to the top of my list - a great use of location services, and produced great results on my first use (In Maidenhead, near London). I travel around the UK a lot for work, and knowing where to get a coffee before my meeting is worth the price on its own. WAY better than Googling a place name. I'd love to be able to add my own categories or even specific brand names, but that's about it.

Good, but out of date  rating of Vicinity
By: BoneRattler - 19-Jan-2009
Version: 2.0
Not a bad little App, quick and easy to use with nice integration into maps.
2 main problems with it are that the information seems out of date by about 3 years (Did a search for bars/pubs in the vicinty and search yielded results back with at least two pubs that shut down some time ago, a new one has opened up in the area which didn't come up,(this 'new' bar opened up about 2 years ago) can't comment if it's the same for in citys or not as i haven't used it in a city yet) and the distances seem *slightly* out.
But all in all definatly worth getting! 4 stars due to out of date info, would have scored 5 otherwise.

This is just what I have been wanting!  rating of Vicinity
By: complexlee - 30-Aug-2008

Nice clear interface, great that it orders places by order of distance. Doesn't show everywhere you would like but gives you a good selection of establishments, for instance I was in a coffee republic my preffered coffee chain and it only showed the nearby cafe nero's, and coffee republic use the cloud free wi-fi so its certainly handy for us iPhone users in London, hope the developer can add these and many more in future! But I'm sure I will find this invaluable none the less!

Good use of GPS and the internet to get you relevant local information  rating of Vicinity
By: Mick_B_1971 - 29-Jul-2008
Version: 1.00
I have been using it for a day and I have to say it works really well, I work in Portsmouth and I have found a whole load of information from places that are within 2 miles of me. Lots more from further afield. I could have got this information from the internet using Google but it would have taken me ages, this app does it in seconds.
I really like the ' where am I?' button. Not only do you get the map and a pin point but also the local area name and best of all an 8 figure grid reference.
That might be no good to you in a city but if you go cross country walking/biking then how good is that!?
It also reports on how accurately it is assessing your position, indoors it is + - 900 metres but I have had as good as + - 9 metres outdoors, very accurate for walking about.
It has wiki summary for points of interest and links to the full site.
I would give it 5 stars if it were not for the fact that when you click on the ‘show map ‘button there is no option to go back to what you were doing in the app., also the map does not scroll when you ‘walk’ off the end.
I am using it on the Iphone 3g.

I'm having fun but ...  rating of Vicinity
By: Zoolok - 25-Jul-2008
Version: 1.00
I'm out by more than the +/- 1.8 km it says :) Perhaps it's down to the poor reception I have here!
I'm also given information about a place with a similar name to my current location - but more that 150 miles away!
Improvements/features: Alter the search radius? ATM and petrol stations have already been mentioned. Web sites for places that come up in the search?
I'd also like the ability to set a different location so I could check for things near to where I *will* be going.
Still; love it anyway

Would have got 5 stars but...  rating of Vicinity
By: dn2009 - 24-Jul-2008

No petrol stations listed? This is quite an important thing to be able to find bit I can't with this app; a real shame. However what it does do it does well so it still gets 4 stars. Welldone!
UPDATE: I've had a response to my email I sent them and they have told me that they will be adding both Petrol stations and ATM machines but they're still sourcing the data for these...but good to hear. I would agree that some of the data is not very good. I was sat outside 2 restaurants in Bruton, Somerset 1 of which has been there for years and years and it didn't pick it up...AND it's a very good and popular restaurant so not sure why?

Brilliant - gets what you want when you want!  rating of Vicinity
By: 2spike - 21-Jul-2008

Great app and great value. Can sometimes take upto 20seconds to present the data required, but when it does it is accurate and comprehensive. The way you can then click on the places phone number and it dials straight away is excellent. This app shows real compatibility promise between GPS and the web. I have used this app on multiple occassions in unfamiliar areas - e.g to get a taxi in the midlands and it works a treat - superb!

Not perfect, but well worth the money  rating of Vicinity
By: Leeds_Guy - 20-Jul-2008
Version: 1.00
I tried this in Leeds the other day and it found some of the most recent bars and restaurants (a few of which I'd heard about but had no idea where they were!). Generally I'd say it's spot on most of the time, although as other reviews have stated, it's only as good as the info it's pulling from the net. Just the convenience of having a simple interface with categorised searches which link to the the Maps functionality and Flickr galleries makes it a worthwhile purchase though. Can't wait for their next version!

Nice application  rating of Vicinity
By: jmckune - Sep 26, 2008
Version: 1.00
I purchased this application after having seen it featured in one of Apple's commercials. I think it is a nice little application, and I like the way they have integrated Wikipedia, flickr, and Panaramio. I have an original 8 gigabyte iPhone without GPS, and it works fine! I hope the developer continues to make it more robust, adds features, and improves the performance a bit. Overall it is well done. (Aside: I always appreciate the thoughtful and constructive reviews, and don't put much stock in overly negative reviews or reviews that obviously promote a competing product.)

Great app but info not 100%  rating of Vicinity
By: maninlondon - 17-Jul-2008
Version: 1.00
This app to me brings all the best features of the iPhone3G together and is pretty much superb.
However it is let down by out of date information (some of it just plain incorrect). Given this is looked up online, hopefully this will be corrected, or at least ActiveGuru might modify the app to apply reporting of incorrect information at a later stage.
Once the information is up-to-date this will be a 5 Star application for sure!
