Looking at the reviews of this app. It is easy to see that many people are besotted by features. Even when extra features are usually the hallmark of an inferior main act. Sigh. Well this program gives you less, but what it gives you is beautiful and hypnotic. You can see a run down of what it does elsewhere but know that this is a wonderful little box of sounds. What I love about it is that it makes a musical arrangement completely visual, allowing you to see the phrases and motifs you have entered. This effect is quite emotional and entirely appropriate. It's interesting that almost a thousand years of musical notation has never tapped into this. I could see children learning to writ music with this app. If I could be developed to show pitch and a few other elements, it could also serve as an educational tool. Of course that is not what it is at this point. Right now, it is simply a transfixing ambient music generator. Well done on this.
Love this app!

I listen to this all the time and it's my number one app! It's so calming and great background noise for when I'm focusing on other things. However it's also very interactive and creative too! I wish they'd add a timer feature to it though so that I can listen to it at night as I go to sleep. Also, I would like to see a "sleep" (or maybe "audio only") mode--where the screen turns off, but the "music" plays on. The visual eats my battery if I'm just playing it in the background. :o(

Really quite astounding! Spent hours of creative bliss after purchase. So intuitive, beautiful and perfectly suited to iPhone. Brought it to band practice tonight- we were having an "acoustic" session... lyre, violin, voice, guitar and hand drums. After the lyre intro I brought in the BLOOM. Like ethereal bells in a fairy church the sounds were perfectly in tune with the song. I created some sparse patterns, then picked up my violin and jammed over the top. The patterns kept evolving during the whole song and made a beautiful outro. A real musical instrument!!!

Get it! This App is fantastic! An artful, beatifully designed ambient music generator by Mr. Ambient himself, Brian Eno.
Careful, very addictive...it just puts you in a great space and you will feel like a musical genius as you create an ever-evolving sonic atmosphere.
I cook up a group of motifs and hook the thing to my stereo and just let the music take off. One of the greatest things I have seen for the iPhone.
The real deal and WORTH the price!

I wasn't sure at first what this application actually did even after reading the description. I knew it made music and that's it. However it's the most wonderful application. With the touch of your finger you can make the most beautiful sounds that over time turn into a mesmerizing, calming & soothing sound to take you away from the hustle & bustle.
I would like to see the ability to record your musical creations on the iPhone somehow, the ability to use different instruments and the ability to set up Bloom to play for a set amount of time before fading down over a minute or two & the application closing. Perfect for falling asleep.
Well done on a most creative and amazing application that allows even the non musical to make the most beautiful music.
I hope there's more updates and features to come. If this is version 1 of Bloom, I can't wait to see (and hear!) what future releases hold in store.
Best Music App So Far
By: Liquidmonkey - 26-Oct-2008
This, as far as I am aware, is the first application on the Ipod for creating music that is not a simulation of an existing instrument. What we have here is a totally new way to make music that really capitalises on the Ipods touch screen and display. That said I think a trick has been missed - as it stands you can only control the pitch of the note along the vertical axis, how much better if other parameters were altered as you went horizontally across the screen as well. For instance altering the balance to change the stereoscopic placement of each note or alternatively altering the timbre. It would also have been nice if the length of notes could be altered depending on how long you left your finger on the screen, which could be further enhanced if it was possible to slide a note up or down.
Overall I think this is a brilliantly executed idea which is surprisingly engaging. I have no hesitation in recommending this to anyone.
Superb app, could use more depth
By: Stupot - 26-Oct-2008
Bloom is likely to gain many followers due to it's association with ambient music genius Brian Eno. However, this perhaps doing the app a small disservice as it's a fine piece of software in it's own right. First off, you can pick it up and start creating your own ambient masterpieces immediately, no music knowledge required! The only point that the app does belie it's simplicity is that you really can't tinker with any of the settings, the background audio and the main synth sound is set to a default. For proper audio heads, this might be considered a deal breaker, but for enthusiasts of ambient electronica who want to spend a little time composing their own tunes is a really superb way to do so.
Visually, the app is very slick and also very intuative. Future additions to bloom would be great, such as a way to record your mini masterpieces or modify the instruments. For now though, it's perfect as is, definitely check it out!
An outstanding application

I am a fan of ambient music and love some of Eno's stuff ... and what he and Chilvers offer here is a visually and aurally stunning interactive ambient application. But if you don't interact then it generates its own 'random' sound and vision. Very relaxing and, for me, quickly sent me to that 'other place' which is not the hectic modern world. No problems with the sound on my I-pod Touch (32gb) by the way.
Kind of like listening to 'On Land' but is goes on for ever ... and you can control where it goes if you like.
By far the best application I have tried ... real value for money
(and if you want to record your creations just Line Out to your computer and use Audacity)
MIND BENDING little app!
By: Minman61 - Nov 2, 2008
Most incredible ambient textural creation machine!
Touch the different parts of the screen and become part of the creative process.
Experiment and learn expand your knowledge of this amazing little app and then let it take you away into worlds unknown.
Sit back let it evolove and relax....forget about all the things that have been bothering you and clear your head.
The words CALGON TAKE ME AWAY come to mind when I listen to this cool little exploratory application.
I think that even Steven Wilson might not smash his iPod if he saw this application!
Now that's what I'm talkin bout!
A wonderful music application
By: Waterwayman - 14-Oct-2008
I was not sure that I wanted to spend £2.39 on an application that I could not try out first, but previous reviews convinced me that this was something special, and how right they were. It was worth every penny and I certainly would have paid more. If you like ambient music and have a creative flair then this application will give you hours of enjoyment creating beautiful music sounds. Many thanks to Brian Eno and Peter Chilvers.
By: Bobbon - 14-Oct-2008
When you see Brian Eno's name attached to something ambient, you know something good's going to happen. When you add Peter Chilvers to it, then it suddenly becomes something even more special. This is such a simple idea, but with hidden complexities that are made easy to access by the fantastically intuitive interface. Tap on the screen - higher up gives higher notes. I'd like it if tapping to the left or right affected the stereo position, or perhaps the timbre or volume. Maybe in a future release. Even if this is it - the finished product - it's wonderful. I love it, and I hope there'll be more...
Tune Out EVERYONE At Work!
By: BotheredByTalkers - Oct 24, 2009
I work in an office that has all kinds of talkative women (not to be sexist, they just love to process out loud far more than men). Anyhow, I pair this app with Bose noise eliminating headphones and I've had the best concentration that I've had EVER! There's a meditative quality to this which makes the mind go into a trance state and makes focus outstanding. I used to listen to music at work, but I don't think music always matches the brain's natural waves...the way this generates sounds doesn't let you concentrate on the app, but it lets you concentrate on work. BIZ-NIZZ! Goodbye talkative chicks!
Just plain Wow!

I have been a Brian Eno fan for years, and have several of his CDs on my iPod for long flights...but THIS is supercalifragilistic AND expialidocious. It lets you create your own Thursday Afternoons or 77 Million Paintings by simply tapping on the screen; the bubbles arise along with the music; the whole thing creates an ambient sound-and-picture show that takes your breath away (well, takes MY breath away), in a very soothing, ambient way. Try that on your Blackberry!
Awesome for V1.0
By: AdamVrijland - 11-Oct-2008
I really love this application. I'm not musically minded but it's simple interface allows me to experiment endlessly which is great. It's a fantastic introduction to making music, especially for children.
I'd love to see some interface tweeks such as numeric display of delay time as I've been trying out duets with a friend. It would also be great if the sampling changed in some way based on the position in the width of the screen rather than just the height. Maybe tone bending based on phone shake. Variations when the circles touched and some more samples would also be a welcome addition.
Beautifully executed, can't wait for V 2.0

This app is incredible! I've had it for awhile, but did not realize it had a sleep timer until last night. I am a terrible sleeper, and have trouble falling asleep and waking often. Last night I set the sleep timer to 30 minutes, created a melody, and was asleep within minutes. I did not wake until morning. I don't know why it works so well at soothing the soul, and I don't really care. Just happy that it does. The price for this app is unbelievably low, and I have never had a problem with it. Buy it now, and enjoy...

I am a licensed massage therapist and whenever the satellite radio channel goes on the fritz, I turn on Bloom and in between effleuraging some muscles, a few taps and it's ambient live music for the guest as well as a completely zen soundtrack. At less than a pack of cigarettes, it's paid for itself. If one wants to record, plug a mini stereo cable to a recorder input and play it live into a portastudio, GarageBand or other source. I just wish the app was compatible with my iPod composite cable so I could watch it on my TV while I play! This is the best original app available. Even if you are not musically inclined, pick this app up and start jamming! ... To sleep! Lol.

Incorporating Eno's minimalist ambient music into an application such as this was worth the 3.99. This was the first app I bought and it has been enjoyed on a daily basis. I've been a fan of Brian Eno since Ambient 1 and this app fits the music perfectly. My 2 year old loves it as well with the colors and gentle sounds. Waiting for what comes next!Just downloaded the update and it just made this app better than ever! More sounds and moods are an addition and not a replacement which is great. Going to try out the other apps from Opal in the near future.
Would have been 5 if not for crackling (updated
By: dpiers - Oct 27, 2008
As of writing, there is a serious bug with this app that causes a 'static'ey crackling noise on the iPod Touch 2G.
I hope it gets fixed because this app is awesome. If you have an iPhone or iPod Touch 1G then don't even hesitate to buy this, but if you have a Touch 2G then you probably want to wait to get this until after it gets fixed.
Edit: It's fixed! Five stars for a great app. I use this all the time to tap out a nice little loop and take a nap.
By: mark_c08 - Oct 27, 2008
This app is unbelievably relaxing and mistifying. The sounds are brilliant. I have absolutely no idea what distortion other people are complaining about. The randomness of the sounds you create makes you want to keep playing with the app. So simple yet so profound! I could swear I couldn't count the times where I almost dropped my iPod while creating music because I have unknowingly fallen asleep already!
By: atomicbeat - 10-Oct-2008
Of the 30 or so apps I have downloaded from the store (free and paid for) this is the app I am enjoying the most!
It's great to be able to create a piece, hit freeze and then leave it running in the background while I work or read - when I'm bored with it hit release, add a few more elements and then hit freeze again.
Have not played with all the moods and parameters yet.
Lovely interface, great design - very engaging!
Well done to Peter the designer/realiser!
Of course I love Eno's ambient work so this was bound to have some interest for me but it is just so well realised!
