Reviews:
Excellent By: Ragnaer - Sep 9, 2009 Version: 1.3.7 Bought and downloaded about 15 minutes ago and have successfully tuned a 6 string acoustic, a 6 string electric, two 4 string basses & a 6 string bass (low B was a bitof a hassle, but it is on my Boss inline as well. For $4 this is well worth the cash as you will always have a reliable tuner on you. To those with issues with this tuner, I'd suggest using a pick (for stringed instrments), moving closer to the iphone while tuning and if troubles are persisting... Change your strings. Over all great app!
My two cents... By: Music Man Fan - Aug 20, 2009 Version: 1.3.7 You know, I've seen a few bad reviews of this tuner and Im wondering if there's a lack of understanding on how to use it. 1.) It's not going to work in your loud obnoxious rehearsal room. For all of you saying that the needle jumps all over the place tell your drummer to stop playing for a minute so you can tune! 2.) It's not going to work if you tune your instrument with harmonics. Equal tempered instruments are what they are. So tune it the way you would when you learned how to play the thing in the first place! 3.) Don't use a pick (guitar players I'm looking at you)! Your pick is adding unnecessary garbage like harmonics that Cleartune can pick up. Instead use your finger with medium pressure near the sound hole or pick ups. What can I say? It's a great tuner...Easy to use, accurate and damn sexy.
Outstanding Tuner By: bubbastrat - Aug 13, 2009 Version: 1.3.7 I've been playing guitar for 45 years. I started out with pitch pipe type tuners. Electronics weren't invented yet. I've tried 30-40 different types. With most of them, I need to tweak the tuning to my ear to get it right after using the electronics. With this tuner, I can tune and play. It's dead on every time. If I were in a noisy room, however, I still might need to plug in my Boss guitar/tuner using the standard guitar cable, but in home situations where ambient noise isn't a problem, this application is superior to any tuner I've used. By this way, this is my first and only app review. I feel that strongly about this tuner!
Great Tuner and tone generator By: Lotus Seven - Aug 10, 2009 Version: 1.3.7 Works well as a tuner. It's sensitive, quick responding, and even well works with the tiny in-line microphone on the Apple "In-Ear Headphones". The tone generator is useful, generating your choice of (3) waveforms allowing different harmonic content, although it has a few "quirks": 1. The output level is quite high. This is necessary when using the built-in speaker, but can reach dangerous (hearing damaging) levels when using headphones. Be sure to turn the level down to less than 1/3rd of maximum before listening to the signal on headphones. 2. When changing frequencies, as in doing a slow frequency "sweep" the tone generator produces a lot of loud "clicks". This only occurs when the frequency is changed and the clicks stop once the tone is stable at one frequency. 3. It is possible to "select" very high frequencies (supersonic and above) on the generator's display. However, because this is a digitally synthesized generator with an apparent sampling frequency of 44,100 Hz. it actually produces an alias signal at the sum and differences between the set frequency and 44.1 kHz. in other words, if you set the tone generator to 34.1 kHz it actually outputs a signal at 10 kHz. Of course, this is not a problem at audio frequencies below 20kHz., but use caution if you use it as a electronic signal source. All in all, an amazing App and a very useful one.
HITS THE MARK By: song-leader - Jun 15, 2009 Version: 1.3.6 I am a song leader at a church with acappella singing and I just bought a stringed instrument. First, after downloading the app, I tuned my mandolin and it was PERFECT. When it was time to go to worship services, I was leading the acappella worship song service. I had selected 5 songs and then used the app for getting the correct pitch prior to leading the song! It is A LOT of resource for a reasonable price! This app is what the iPhone is all about, making one resource work for you in SO MANY WAYS! Great job Matthew on developing a great resource.
Excellent Tuner!!! By: camcorderdoctor - Jun 12, 2009 Version: 1.3.6 This is probably the best instrument tuners out there - The accuracy is outstanding - I highly recommend this application for every musician. I use this in place of my digital tuner that I paid 80 bucks for. I can now ebay my old tuner and that will give me the cash to cover the cost of the app and put a few dollars back in my pocket. Outstanding!!!! Thanks Matthew, This app has proven to be very convenient and useful, way to go!
works well By: kurtgish - Jun 8, 2009 Version: 1.3.5 I don't know why some others have had difficulty with it. However, given all of the different overtones that musical instruments make, it is not surprising that some instruments may make an audio spectrum that confuses this app. I have only tested it with a Yamaha digital piano, with which it works perfectly (or, at least, this app says that my Yamaha is perfectly in tune). I have also only tested it with the 12-tone equal temperament scale. For those who find that it is off by 20 cents or more, this may be an specific to your iPhone, as I find that all iPhone sound apps give identical results. For example, with a pure sine-wave generator, this app, on my iPhone, is very accurate, typically within 0-3 Hz (0-5 cents), as are other iPhone apps that I have tested (like "FFT" and "Spectrogram").
From The Developer By: bitcount - May 22, 2009 Version: 1.3.5 Hello everyone! Thank you to all our customers, especially those who have taken time to contact us with feature requests, questions, concerns and cheers! We have recently discovered (thanks to a customer) an issue with Cleartune on certain first generation (aluminum backed) iPhones where it is unable to get a solid lock on a note. Unfortunately it seems that most people fail to contact the developer when they have an issue so we were unaware of the issue until now, but we are working with a few 1G users to resolve the issue as quickly as possible. This issue doesn't seem to affect 3G iPhones. If you are having an issue with Cleartune, please contact us via our website at bitcount.com so we can continue to deliver what we and all our faithful users believe to be one of the best tuners out there! Cheers, Matthew Finn
pitch perfect By: heavymeta - May 22, 2009 Version: 1.3.4 I am a cellist and use this app regularly. It has a little trouble with the lowest (C) string. I've found if you just play the string and then tune it from the ring afterwards it actually gets it right. All the others you can tune in a more conventional manner. Despite that quirk, it's a great app. The tuning for other strings is dead on. Great visual design, easy to use. Definitely the best general-purpose tuner in the store.
Outperforms the top dollar tuners out there By: Bornigan - May 16, 2009 Version: 1.3.3 I have been a professional musician for over 20 years, and this is by far the best tuner I have ever used. The precision is so fine that I have a hard time keeping it perfectly on the nose, and it helped me pinpoint a few spots on my saxes that are just slightly out of tune. And best of all, my tuner is always with me since I always have my iPhone and I don't have to carry around another gadget. In my opinion, this app would be a bargain if it was $30, and it is a steal where it is priced now. Get it!

Keep it simple for the stupid??? By: Carol32 - Apr 28, 2009 Version: 1.3.3 I use this tuner to tune my harpsichord all the time, and my friend has used it to tune her harp when her tuner's battery died: two of the most difficult instruments in the world to keep in tune. ( she has a blackberry, or she would have downloaded this app immediately) The previous reviewer thinks that its not necessary to 'know which note you're on." Really? What is he tuning, a one string banjo? Seriously, this tuner performs perfectly. If it had a simple "in tune" widgit without the accuracy of seeing exactly what note I was one, how could I be sure its tuning in to C# and not a quarter tone flat of D? Without the informationg provided by the tuning dial, I would still need to carry around my 2 lb, $100 tuner. If you want accuracy, get this tuner. I have used it for violins, violas, cellos, harps, and harpsichord in professional settings. And just for fun, on a seriously out of tune piano - just to watch the poor needle jump and try to figure out what note is being played. Get this app if you care about playing in tune. It's fabulous.
Bought this for tuning electric guitar By: farismitri - Apr 1, 2009 Version: 1.3.3 Hey all, I own an sg-310 electric guitar, with a Rolland microcube. I tuned my guitar perfectly to standard, drop d and drop c with no problems at all. With The amp AND without the amp the mic on the iPhone picks up the sound just fine either way.
User suggestions:
1. Always keep that needle stabilizing thing on.
2. If tuning a guitar, use the guitar setting!
3. Never buy another tuner again...unless it's less than 4 bucks...and fits inside your phone :P
Dev team suggestions: if you could please have a more obvious indicator for when it is no longer picking up a note that would be greatly appreciated! Next update ???
What are you talking about? By: Lozaa - 16-Sep-2009 Version: 1.3.7 This works perfectly for me, in fact more than perfect! This thing is so accurate that I couldn't even tell the difference between something which to me looked like a huge gap! It worked amazingly with my electro-acoustic guitar and an external mike on iPod touch 2nd gen, giving it perfect tuning in 2 minutes! If you need a tuner for any instrument, even to check your own voice pitching, get this!
Excellent App By: That Trumpet Dude - Mar 28, 2009 Version: 1.3.3 It's an excellent app, and an excellent tuner. It's much easier for me to just pull out my iPhone during concerts or on the go than having to remember to bring a tuner. And with the new inverted view, I can orient my iPhone so the mic isn't blocked by the base of my music stand. I tested the app for accuracy, and by using an A-440 tuning fork, I found that it registered slightly sharp. I just went to the settings and told it to tune to an A-441.2, and now it's almost dead on. Really just a minor change, but enough for those of you questioning the accuracy to see that it's alright.
Cleartune Chromatic Tuner Review By: Harpsichordist - 07-Aug-2009 Version: 1.3.7 As a professional harpsichord & piano tuner for more than 30 years, who has always tuned using an A=440 fork until last year, when I started using a Korg CA-30 tuner, the Cleartune Chromatic Tuner is a delight to use. It's very easy to use, very accurate in the middle of the piano where it's most important (although, when tuning the treble, some caution is needed, as it tends to consider the top note of accurately tuned octaves as being too sharp). But its best feature of all is the ability to choose a wide variety of alternative temperaments, including all the main temperaments I ever need to use, which is a real boon to someone tuning harpsichords for baroque music, and fortepianos for late 18th century composers' music. And, at £2.39, it's a bargain! But I should just warn that with prolonged use, your iPhone will need even more frequent charging!
Straightforward & Accurate By: iPhonefan#1 - Mar 23, 2009 Version: 1.3.2 Tested this against two other expensive & accurate tuners I have & it was dead on, as long as I don't have the needle damping on. The tuner reads consistently flat with the needle damping on--so I don't recommend using that particular function. Really nice to have an accurate tuner always in my pocket!! I just love the iPhone--what a remarkable piece of technology! Another really great app that works well ....a tuner on my PHONE!!--too cool...
Best tuner period! By: TWRGTR - Mar 20, 2009 Version: 1.3.2 I've been a guitar player for over 25 years and a full time guitar/piano/drum teacher. I have used hundreds of tuners over the years and this is as accurate as the best strobe tuner I've ever used. The attenuation settings are awesome to say the least. I really like the "buffer" that has been added. Aside from that it's with me everywhere I go! If you're thinking of buying a tuner from this store, this is the one. If you're at all concerned about the price, keep in mind it's cheaper than anything you'll found in ANY music store anywhere AND it's at least as accurate if not more.
Great tuner. Temperament? By: Iotic - 27-Mar-2009 Version: 1.3.3 Very useful tuner, cheaper and more likely to be in your pocket than the hardware version.
It would be nice to have better-implemented temperament controls and display. Alternate temperaments aren't much use without a key-centre. Still, most musicians don't have much need for temperament adjusting anyways. Good app.
OK excellent you added a key centre for the temperament. Now I can use this to make Indian flutes. Have five stars.
Stop thinking about it and buy it!!!!! By: Nicholi Borchenknoff - Mar 12, 2009 Version: 1.3.1 Hi Everybody! (hi Dr.Nick, simpsons humor) This is the first iPhone app I have actually paid for, and I have got to tell ya, it is worth hundreds of dollars! I was the top saleman in the nation for Musicians Friend a few years back and I have sold strobe tuners that cost over $5,000 and I must say this app tunes almost as well in my opinion. I just tuned my classical guitar and was very impressed! Then I tuned my 12 string in about a minute and WOW! I am excited to see how well it works on my daughters harp. Buy this app! I now have a High quality tuner with me everywhere I go, Thank you to the designers and keep up the great work!
Expectations BLOWN! By: Joe Loy - Mar 11, 2009 Version: 1.3.1 At first I didn't think this tuner would work as well as it does. I am thoroughly impressed. The response time is faster than garage band. The tuner itself seems to be more accurate. And, the rotating wheel concept is great! You can see quickly an easily see where you are, and where you need to be. This is the only tuner in the app store with the wheel interface. It's easy to understand, and easy to see when the phone is a distance away. I use this tuner to tune my violin, baritone ukulele, electric (and acoustic) guitars, and my electric bass guitar. Though, for curiosity's sake, I tried it out on my friends old-out-of-tune acoustic piano. And, it showed me just how flat those things can get! All in all, I gave this app 5 stars. The only improvements I could possibly imagine would be the ability to zoom in on the precise tuning element by rotating the iPhone horizontally. That way I could just set the phone in front of my amp, and look at it from an even further distance. And, if version 2.2 allows it, line in support. So I could plug my electric instruments directly into my phone. I highly recommend this application.
