Exactly What I Was looking For  rating of PlugPlayer
By: Bvordy - Nov 21, 2009
Version: 2.4.1
This app is great! I wanted something in which I could use with my iPhone the way I use my PS3 as a media client. Immediately after installation, my media server was detected and the user interface was intuitive enough to easily locate and play songs. Sure, some refinemet is needed for things like track time and the picture viewer is not great as the pics are small and you cannot zoom in on them. I look forward to the updates, but for now, I this app is exactly what I wanted - a music client.

Very robust iPhone media client  rating of PlugPlayer

I wanted to be able to play my extensive iTunes library (audio & video) stored on my Mac and on a networked WD MyBook World Edition hard drive through my iPhone. I have the TVMOBiLi uPNP/DLNA server installed on my Mac and the WD NAS has a built-in Twonkymedia server. The PlugPlayer picked up both immediately and I was able to effortlessly play audio and video from either source on the iPhone. It even displays music clipart.
The PlugPlayer app could do with a few more bells and whistles (like the ability to play music/video without first adding it to a playlist) but I'm sure these will come in a future update). Well worth the money!

Basic but Very capable  rating of PlugPlayer

Update V2.4Keeps getting better. Having bought a DLNA enabled Samsung tv it was great to see I can use my iPhone to select a movie or playlist from my Twonky server and send it to to tv. The samsung UI is awful so this really helps me.There are many poor reviews, but many of these can be attributed to server, firewall or networking issues rather than plugplayer. To the commenter on remote access.. This works fine with twonky server, just use the iphones native VPN to your LAN and plugplayer works the same as if you were at home. Finally, I found the forum at the plugplayer website very useful. That's a direct line to the developer. Thanks! V2.1.2I have been looking for a way to stream my iTunes library in my home over wifi. This does it. I have a main pc with WMP11 set to share my iTunes music directory. The iPod touch in my kitchen picked up this upnp server immediately and I can browse my library and stream fine. Something I wasn't expecting was that once plugplayer was also installed on my iPhone, I can not only browse and stream as before, but I can also select the iPod in the kitchen as the renderer therefore remotely controlling it's output. This is perfect as BBQ season approaches. The app is a little unpolished but very much worth the money. The initial list population of the library when first run takes a few minutes but that could be wmp11's fault. I am hoping development is continuing!

It works!  rating of PlugPlayer
By: Gambaru - May 17, 2009

I was hesitant at first to purchase this because of the low ratings. However, it works exactly as advertised for me. For media servers, my household uses a 1Tb Maxtor Central Axis NAS, three PCs, and an Xbox. I also have a DLINK DSM 520 Media Lounge (aka media renderer) hooked up to my home theater and stereo. Everything is on a wired LAN to a wireless router. This app lets me access media as I have it organized on any of the servers and play them to the DSM and/or iPhone. I can even start a song to the DSM and then start another for the iPhone. Wow! The first time I ran it, it seemed to hang up but I think that was because it was getting the info for the first time on all the media I have which is a lot. After that, there was no hesitation. Good job Mr. Adams!

Works like a charm with PS3 media server  rating of PlugPlayer
By: Devguy - 27-Mar-2009

Today I downloaded "PS3 media server" which is open-source freeware. Installed on my Windows Server 2008 machine, published my roaming music, photo and video folders and all hooked into my PS3 with no problem. Then I thought, I wonder if I can access these files through my iPhone? Downloaded this iPhone app, selected my media server and was playing tunes direct from my iTunes library within seconds. As a developer myself I tip my hat to those involved with creating this app. Well worth a few quid. PaulHale.com

I use this program as my interface to stream FLAC media from my Twonky server to my Linn Klimax DS. As soon as I activated WiFi on my iPhone, it found my Linn Klinax DS as a rendered and my Twonky media server. No hassles and easy. I am unable to use this or any other programs to stream my music to my iPhone since I store all my music in FLAC. Whose fault is it that the iPhone cannot play FLAC? Apple. Wake up Apple, FLAC is fast becoming the universally accepted Lossless music file format. Don't keep sticking your corporate head in the sand.

DLNA rocks on iPhone  rating of PlugPlayer
By: mtnwing - Nov 16, 2009
Version: 2.4.1
I work for a big software provider but my company has not yet released an iPhone build or DLNA. I figured I'd give this a go while I waited for my company's own finished product. What I can tell you is that this product does work and does a pretty nice job. I tested it with PlayOn software from MediaMall, a popular windows DLNA server (DMS). It works flawlessly with PlayOn serving music from the personal music directories. A lot of people have trouble getting DLNA set up properly initially and blame it on the wrong things; this PlugPlayer does work so I suspect the others who had difficulties were not setting there server up correctly or had a non-DLNA compliant server (Xbox for example doesn't pass DLNA certification). Once you have the servers pointed properly and make sure you've properly indexed the content on your server, this software works perfectly. I am very happy with it. Kudo's to the developer. Just realized it also works perfectly for pictures. Very cool stuff!!! Also tested quickly with Win 7 and this DMS also seems to work fine.

Great app!  rating of PlugPlayer
By: Pplus - Aug 22, 2009
Version: 2.3.1
This app does almost everything you can expect within the limits of the iPhone/touch. I am using this with various upnp media servers and it works great. Transcoding works through TVersity but takes a while. The only thing that I can tell that needs updating is secure authentication from remote networks and it's a bit buggy when entering text in the 'add a device manually' section. Definitely recomended.

Best UPnP/DLNA controller for iphone to date  rating of PlugPlayer
By: SpiderBacon - Jul 26, 2009
Version: 2.3.0
Very stable, works great in my home.
Pros:
- I could browse all UPnP/DLNA servers in my home and control all renderers.
- I can browse all recorded shows on my DirecTV HR-21 STB's (Can only play on DLNA renderers with DTCP/IP support)
- Works great with my Cisco Wireless Home Audio system (can even push content to zones)
- Assembling playlists with content from multiple sources is a nice feature
Cons:
- Biggest issue is that there's no "clear playlist" feature (at least i couldn't find it) so it's very annoying having to delete one item at a time.
- Would be nice to be able to save playlist

Damn good  rating of PlugPlayer

If you have a media server like windows media player (yes windows media player can act as a dlna media server) and a dlna tv (or any other dlna player) then this little app is the business. Once setup, open the app, select your movie, music video, music play list etc from your media server. and sit back. The media file will then stream to either your iPhone or your tv. Nice little app. One thing I would like to see is the ability to be able to turn off the iPhone and have multiple music files continuously play but this is probaly a limitation of the dlna protocol and not the app. Also it would be cool to have the iPhone be a media server and be able to play pictures, music and videos from the iPhone to the player

Got media servers running on Netgear NAS and PC , thought I'd look for a player and found this. Interface is a little cluny but OK when you get used to it. It found the servers with no problems at all , play back great. Does support video but all my video files aren't encoded for IPOD so I tihnk that's the problem but this software did select the video file and launch the video player. Works with IPOD Touch software 3

Above average with room for improvement  rating of PlugPlayer
By: Grouchy Nick - 11-Jan-2009
Version: 2.1.0
I'm quite pleased with the app after the latest updates. The stability is above average for a upnp av program and it does work most of the time. The main areas I think need improvement are: - the interface is a little clunky (I'm sure the refresh button is smaller than is recommended in the apple ui standards) - changing renderer clears the playlist making it painful to move the playback to another room/device. The n800 can manage this so it is possible - it would be useful if the app could try to reconnect to the last server/renderer used when it loads All in all not bad value. I have tested it mainly with twonky media 4.4, 5 and orb with a soundbridge radio as my main renderer. Nick

Works very well, interface could be better, limited controls.  rating of PlugPlayer
By: StreamingIsCool - 02-Feb-2009

To use this excellent application for controling Music and Video Players you have to use the bland looking interface.
Start by clicking the configure button in the top right corner
Then it will automatically detect your Media Servers and Media Renderers on your network. (some devices are both a Server and a Renderer)
Select a Media Renderer (this is a player) it can be your iPhone or your XBMC, iPhone or Popcorn Hour etc..
Then
Select a Media Server (this is the device where your movies/music are stored).
Once you've done this you click the device name in the top left corner (confusing interface huh).
You've now set up a temporary relationship between your Server & Renderer.
But you've still got an empty playlist so now you have to click the + button to search the available music and movies, when you've done this click Done and you'll return to the playlist menu.
Now highlight the file and click play.
I can sit anywhere in my house and select what music or movies to play on either of my televisions it's very cool.
It works perfectly with XBMC (Xbox Media Center) and also with Popcorn Hour A100 and of course the iPhone.
Pro's
It works
Con's
The user interface is very clunky
Controls are limited to play pause previous next and volume.
cant wait for fast forward rewind etc...
Future upgrades
The ability to create a device pairing and save them under a nickname would be cool, automatically filling the playlist with the Server content is a must.

At first I was worried about app based on the rating and negative reviews, I de cided to give it a shot since most problems that users give are PEBKAC.The program reconginzed my uPnP from the MyBookWorld and was able to streamv video to phone with no hassle.

Great bit of sofware, works really well with my xbmc meaning I can play tunes via my stereo without having to turn the telly on. Playlist options are great and it uses the library data from xbmc. Think the UI could do with a bit of polish!
