I love this app, I probably use it more frequently than most of my apps. It's great for when u're trying to think of the name of a song or who sings it and you just can't remember. I like how it gives the option to watch music videos, get lyrics, read bio right from your song's tag. Lots of times I grab my phone if I want to quickly look up lyrics to a song and this app has made that so much easier. (Would be cool if more songs offered lyrics though...)

Possibly my favorite app so far. It's incredibly useful for identifying songs you hear on the radio/tv/inside a store/wherever that you don't know. What really makes this app in my opinion is that it can pick it up almost anywhere. For example I was inside a Quizno's where it was loud inside from the machines, people talking, etc. and the radio was very quiet, yet Shazam still managed to identify the song quickly and easily even though i was at least 20 feet from the closest speaker. Add to the fact it stores all the songs you tag so you can check them later when you get home. It also gives you the link to buy them right then in itunes if you choose.

this app totally rocks, it works 99% of the time with radio, tv, parties anywhere theres music... even some of the lesser known stuff, the geo-tagging is usefull so i remember where i heard that song... and my friends absolutely love me for it as they can never remember the name of that new song they like when it comes on, so i just fire up shazam and find the name artist, etc... also works great for updating incorrect entries in your media library!

Really great app!!! It knows nearly every song I've had it listen to! I hated when a song I loved came on the radio and I never knew the name. With this app, this is not a problem anymore!!!!! I have even used this to find the names of songs played in movies!! I especially love how it keeps a record of all the tagged songs. This makes It especially easy to find for future reference. I'm shocked that this is free!!!!!!

I hate when I am in the car, and a song is playing on the radio that you really like, and if you got the one radio station that actually does tell you the song, they only say it once and crazy fast. As a result you miss the song, and if you hear it again, you still don't know the name. Rinse and Repeat. This app makes it great to not only find the song but to store it for future reference. This app tagged 4/5 songs, so it actually works pretty well. Since it is a free app it does have ads, however there is only one ad, and it is pretty small and out of the way (for the most part). It's pretty fast during all three stages of tagging, and this app works perfectly with iPhone OS 3. A great app to have on the ready.

How can anyone not love this one? There are soooo many times when I hear a song that I love and just don't know the name of it. With this app, you can identify it quickly and often even find the lyrics to it and be singing along before it goes off the radio (LOL)! If you really love the song, you can then go straight to iTunes from this app and buy it. I use this app all the time and haven't had any problems at all with it. Best of all - it is FREE!!

I've used this a few times now and rarely has it let me down. It's recognised about 90% of the tracks I've tried to tag.
I was most impressed, and compelled to write this review, when I was watching an episode of Top Gear (5/7/09) and I could hear a piece of music in the background of a Rally feature James May was presenting. Over the top of the music, was a commentary, rally car engine noise, and sound effects.... and it STILL managed to pick out what music was playing. Incidentally, E.S Posthumus - Pompeii was the piece of music. Outstanding bit of software.

I highly recommend that all iPhone users who love music like I do to download this application. Despite some of the negative ratings, most of the feedbacks for this application has been positive. But don't take my words or other users, just download it and do your own assessment of the application. I know you'll be satisfied as I am! As a side note, application like this one, will improve over time so just enjoy what it has to offer at the moment, and plus it's free so don't be to demanding unless your willing to spend top bucks.

I really like this app, as I often listen to the radio and wonder what the title/artist of the song playing is/are. The only addition I would make would be the ability to add a note of my own to my tags. I sometimes only want to hunt down the lyrics of a song, not necessarily download it. It would be nice to make a note to this effect on the song tag. Otherwise, this app rules! And it's FREE; that makes it even better!

This was one of the first apps i downloaded after Apple released the appstore and has been one of my fave apps since. I use it all the time and almost always recognizes songs I tag (even obscure stuff that I wouldn't think it would be able to) with some minor exceptions. There's another app out there similar to it but I prefer the interface & results in this one. As far as complaints from iPod touch owners I can understand your frustration that the touch does not have a microphone but that is not the developer's fault & their reviews should not be penalized for it. It really is a great app.

pretty amazing performance but would I pay a subscription fee?????

So far I've tried Shazam 4 times and it nailed it every time. It sure beats Googling song lyrics and it's nice to get the song details and album art! I wish the display of other song versions appeared more like iTunes where you could see which album and popularity ratings. I like that the tags are saved to the iPhone so I can check out different song versions and buy them from iTunes later.
I did receive two strange "tagged" emails in my hotmail inbox that took me to some sort of social networking website after tagging 4 songs and was able to unsubscribe. It was unclear to me what these were about but now I can see it will tie into their plans to monetize the app. As far as I'm concerned, for a$1 per tag I would use very infrequently and would always search the web first. For 10 cents a tag I'd use it often. I'd pay a maximum subscription of $5/year for the convenience.
I've tried Midomi numerous times and a) I feel like a Gomer humming into it and b) I usually get a large number of unrelated song matches to sift through to identify the right one.

Not that it's necessary because it's all been said by other people, but this application is absolutely breathtaking. The fact that it's free (or STILL is free) is mind boggling. My wife and I were sitting in a restaurant patio with music playing garbled in the background, and with many people talking around us and Shazam was STILL able to pick up the music and tag it perfectly. This is the kind of stuff that makes the iphone go above and beyond everything else. I'd give 10 stars if I could.

When I saw this application I knew we would eventually get hitched, it was love at first sight. This was half the reason I bought the iPhone no joke. Say you're out and you want to know the song no more asking drunken losers or the DJ who can't hear a word you're saying or just won't tell you because he's being spiteful. When you're in the car and the radio dj doesnt say that song you've been looking for, for the past month... Is No more... Just hit the button and it's instant gratification. 5 stars.

Simply put, this app will amaze you! I was definitely skeptical when I downloaded it and proceded to put it to the test. I have over 7000 songs on my hard drive and i tested it on easy stuff from the Beatles to hard stuff like folk artists singing Colombian music and it never missed a one. I tested on the music channels from sat tv and it picked the right artists and songs each time even when it was foriegn. I've only had it not be able to find the song once and that was a Mexican song. I've even tried it on the radio in a van and it cut through all the ambient noise to give me the right info. Unfortunately I haven't yet had a practical reason to use it but I know I can count on it when I do Great app. Great price. Can't go wrong!

This thing works for me 100% so far. In a restaurant, I held it up to the speakers and it grabbed the song. From a TV commercial, my son held it up to the speaker and it picked up the song! I LOVE THIS APP!

2008 Apple iPhone Application of the Year?! Bought a $5 app for a game, a few of those $1 apps, and a sh!t load of those freebie apps... And I'd say nothing comes as close as Shazam. I shazam'd a YouTube vid that my friend was in & heard a song in the background... And it got me the song! Same with food shopping at Ralphs, music was playing through speakers in the ceiling while people were talking loud, cashiers scanning barcodes, & yet... It still got the music that I shazam'd. Look at the number of reviews w/ 98% 5 star ratings!?

As a developer it's not often I'm impressed by software but this app is so well thought out, I've bothered to write my first appstore review. Right now, I'm sat in a pub and there's a fair bit of background noise. The music isn't on high and it's just at an ambient level to create a little atmosphere. They're playing a selection of random tunes from behind the bar and I'm about 15" (5 metres) from the nearest speaker. This app has recognized all the tunes so far. What can you say? It seems better than musicbrainz sampling, for sure. I, for one, will be keeping this on my iPhone (original). Kudos to the programmers and acoustic modelers.

Just what I was looking for :)

My OH told me about this app and I'm so glad I took his advice and tried it. I'd been convinced that I couldn't find an iPhone app that could ID songs - I'd tried Mizumi and given up in disgust - but this app is brilliant. It hasn't failed to ID any song I've tried it with. It's so handy for getting details of songs I like but don't recognise when I'm out and about; it's definitely helping me to increase my iTunes library with new music :)

This is one of the amazing apps that make the iPhone seem a magic box of delights. I had no idea this level of recognition software was even available until this app proved it to me. The thing works and it works well. Still only good for identifying popular music mostly but it's a must have both for utility and a good bit of fun for wowing your friends or wowing yourself. I can't believe it's free but I very much appreciate it!

This app is crazy awesome! No more trying to figure out the name of that really good song that you heard someplace. In less than thirty seconds, the song name, the album name and all of that info, apears in the palm of your hand. Whether the song is in a movie, a store, anywhere, Shazam will give you the name. All I can say is this app is amazing and every iphone user should definatly download it right away!
