Awesome By: Tglocks - Mar 15, 2009 Version: 1.05 This app is so good to have if you spend a lot off time in NYC. I am there almost every day and when I need to find the way around, this always works. I was in some random place in the Lower East Side for a basketball game and the app located the nearest subway stations and I quickly routed a way home. This app is great because it gives you a map and a list of stops for each train just like mta.info. Plus you can check for those service adviseries that you usually don't notice until you are waiting for the train. I even use it as a map of the city at times. Overall this is a must buy and especially for its cheap price.
Good Subway Guide By: ncianca - Feb 2, 2009 Version: 1.04 This was the first app I purchased. The maps are readable and the service advisories are an excellent feature. In my neighborhood of lower Manhattan there is substantial construction which affects at least 4 different subway lines and the advisories are a real time saver. In a future version I hope that one can also jump from the Subway map to google maps if you need more detail on the streets around a particular subway stop. I would also love to see a MTA Bus Map integrated into the app.
Best NYC Subway Guide for the IPhone! By: Larry Seltzer - Jan 30, 2009 Version: 1.04 People who complain that the service advisories do not work while you're offline IN the subway shouldn't review this product. NO PHONES or INTERNET SERVICES work in the Subway. Clear, concise maps, raster-quality, zoom-in, great detail, fast loading, fast scrolling. I use this every day when going to client sites throughout the city while ON the subway train! Only request that they add the same quality maps for Metro North and LIRR - not as high quality as the Subway right now. You will not be disappointed with this app!
Must have for New Yorkers By: TeamAwesome - Jan 29, 2009 Version: 1.04 Its great to have the map in your pocket instead of having to stand up, lose your seat and squint at a map over someone's shoulder. This also makes you look like you aren't a tourist for god's sake. There are tons of maps to choose from: MTA subway, Manhattan Bus, LIRR, Metro north etc. The service advisories are clutch. I rarely use it for the "what subway am I closest to!?!?!" function, as google maps does that adequately enough, but a map of the subway, preloaded on your device is perfect. I've read people complaining about the service advisories not being available ON the subway! Of course not, what is this, magic? You just check before you leave. Everything else works fine without an internet connection. Ignore one star reviewers who don't understand the value in having maps at your fingertips.
An Honest MUST-Have, Flawless App! By: StitchinNYC - Sep 8, 2008 Version: 1.02 This is permanent front page application that I use on a regular basis. The maps are crisp, clear and easy to read now that they updated to High res. and the addition of the bus map makes NYC travel a snap! The specific line option makes transfers super easy and the Locate Me is ALWAYS a friend favorite when we're out and about in the city. The Notifications have saved me on a number occasions when I "figured I'd check it, just in case"! The only thing I wish they'd add would be a NJTransit/PATH map with a Direct link to updated train schedules for both LIRR and NJTransit. Then this app would have 100% coverage for all NYC travel! Thanks so much for this guys...I LOVE IT!!!
With the new high resolution map... By: Don Montalvo - Sep 2, 2008 Version: 1.02 ...this is now my favorite NYC train map iPhone application. The map is exactly as supplied by MTA, which is exactly what I want. There are other solutions available (I bought into two of them) but they either have re-drawn maps which are inaccurate and lack much of the information supplied by the MTA, or are too different. I just want the MTA map, and I want it available on or off line, and kept up to date. Thank goodness for competition. Don Montalvo, NYC
Newest version is a big step up in readability By: msandman - Aug 20, 2008 Version: 1.02 The newest version has much clearer graphics, fully equal to iTrans NYC's. Equally valuable, it shows you the major streets ghosted in on the image. This is particularly useful for figuring out where the stops are in relation to the short and randomly named streets of lower Manhattan. (iTrans NYC lacks that feature - it's just a subway map.) CityTransit also has maps for the LIRR, Metro North and Manhattan bus routes. You can use the various features to tell you how to get from one station to another, etc. But for me, the crystal clear maps and the excellent coverage for Manhattan make this a must-have for NYC. Of course, even with 5 stars, there's always room for improvement. So, Magnetism Studios, now how about adding maps of NJ Transit and PATH in the next version?
Life saving By: Ukrules - Aug 14, 2008 Version: 1.02 Easily one of the most useful apps I have. The update brought better resolution maps and the addition of the bus routes. I hadn't even expected the bus routes, so this was a nice bonus. For someone who frequently gets lost or doesn't want to negotiate my way through a packed carriage to look at the map and see how many stops I have left, or even to determine if I am on the right subway line.. this has been a life saver! Also being able to locate the nearest subway using the GPS ... nicely thought of! Thank you!
New Update is great By: Solarflere - Aug 13, 2008 Version: 1.02 This new update is great. Full resolution maps new maps. Staten Island Railway is visible now. Zoom is now with double tap or the pinch. A welcome addition of Manhattan Map. I would like a Brooklyn Map in the future updates, and maybe the rest of the boroughs later on as well. This is the best and the most feature rich NYC transit maps out there. Get this one. The best thing about this, you don't have to remember to pick up a subway map. if you forgot it, you always have it with you. No more looking around the station for it. And no longer looking over someone's head on the in the train car. No more folding and unfolding of the maps. Its right there in your phone.
Must have for New Yorkers By: TeamAwesome - Dec 8, 2009 Version: 1.8 Its great to have the map in your pocket instead of having to stand up, lose your seat and squint at a map over someone's shoulder. Great for people traveling to the city By: Dumais - Aug 27, 2009 Version: 1.6 I was traveling to New York City for a couple of days to see some of Nine Inch Nails' last shows. I looked around for reviews and this app seemed to have the best, plus it was the official app of the MTA. The app worked just like described and really helped me out getting around the city. As some have said, it would be nice to be able to zoom in on the map a little closer, but it in no way effected my ability to read it. Recommended for anyone who's going to NYC and doesn't want to fumble around with a map. It's an easy way to check out routes, but also get specific info on each line to make sure you don't get on the wrong train.
Must have app By: Silicon Valley Nerd - Aug 9, 2009 Version: 1.6 Fist of all, the review in question below is a real one. The features mentioned are all there. When viewing the map, tap the screen once to see all the other maps.
The maps are very detailed now: serious improvement over the first version. Has all the info you could need! Would be nice if it could cache service announcements since you last open the app so you can see service announcements when you are already underground.
This app has it all. Perfect for even the seasoned new yorker.
Service advisories corrected By: JCPf - Apr 9, 2009 Version: 1.05 Feb 15, 09. I love the app, except for one thing. For several weeks (at least) the service advisories have been wrong. Now it says there is no advisory for every line! I emails the developer and he responded quickly saying the MTA had changed something on their site which broke the apps ability to get up to date info. But that was weeks ago and the update didn't fix the problem. They should post something in the description explaining the problem. Update: April 9, 09. Advisories are working. Would be great if you could put in the date and get future advisories (as is possible on MTA web site). Giving it 4 stars now. Has stiff competition in iTrans which has train schedules. They mention adding bus maps in the future. That would be very useful.
Recent subway line symbol problems By: Dr. Bob in the Bronx - Nov 8, 2009 Version: 1.8 Since I live near the north end of the (1) line my needs are simple, I want to know about service problems, particularly weekend disruptions. Recently all the mini line symbols on service report pages have been replaced by [?] symbols rather than (1), (2), or (3). It renders the page almost useless.UPDATE: Service advisories graphics still messed up (10/10) despite promises of quick fix on 9/20.UPDATE 10/22: Despite update, still problems with [?] notations instead of (1) etc line symbols. FIX IT, ALREADY!UPDATE 11/3: Apple is holding up the updates, but that does not help the fact that the service advisories just don't work. It is the feature people paid for.UPDATE 11/8: Service advisories appear to function correctly after the most recent upgrade.
Great app but needs fixing By: Melissa22 - Nov 7, 2009 Version: 1.8 This app is great for getting around NYC. The service advisory section needs fixing. The ? symbol has replaced certain line numbers and it is impossible to know which line is being written about. Please fix this.Update: please fix the service advisory section. At the very least, respond to all of our comments and let us know if a) it will be fixed or b) it will never be fixed and we should just forget about this app altogether.Update (11/7): Thanks for the update!!
Must have for NYC transit users!!! By: whyiseverynicknametaken? - Mar 23, 2009 Version: 1.05 I usually only write reviews if an app is absolutely dreadful and the consumers need to be warned or when it's amazing- this app is the case of the latter, if you live in New York and depend on NYC mta and transit- this app is an absolute life saver, it saved my hide on more than one occasion. The only problem is the service advisory feature which is shaky and doesn't function on the subway, but other than that, its a fantastic app
pretty darn good By: acd111 - Feb 7, 2009 Version: 1.04 The latest versions of this app are really pretty good. As a new yorker who takes the train almost every day, this is a great thing to have. Bookmarking the map on the mta website means you need to have service whenever you view it, which isn't much help when you're already at the station thinking "wait, does this train stop at 5th av?" Plus, viewing such a complex PDF on your iPhone doesn't always work too well. Also, being able to view the stops of each of the line, and advisories is pretty helpful.
Well done and very useful By: MJCube - Jan 30, 2009 Version: 1.04 I have been using this app for several months and I don't understand the negative points from the "top" reviewers. Double-tap works fine; they have even calibrated the zoom to very convenient sizes: the first time it zooms way in, then a little more, just the right size for my eyes. The map resolution is pixel-sharp, not fuzzy; they are certainly not bitmaps because they resolve sharply at any size. It takes a second to do this, but the clarifying effect is sleek. Response to dragging/flicking the map is excellent. Of course you can't get service advisories online when underground, but it's very useful to be able to check the maps without leaving my seat.
LOVE this app, but... By: Sheeple Herder - Jan 29, 2009 Version: 1.04 •UPDATE 1/29/09•
Love the new service advisories in the new update but again, PLEASE re-scan the Manhattan bus map to include Inwood (where I live). When that omission is corrected this app gets five stars.
•FYI: Busses DO run above 155th Street in Manhattan. I know because I live at 172nd & Broadway and see them every day. Can the developer(s) please include the FULL Manhattan bus map in the next update.
Oh, and while you're at it please fix the map location bug that puts me off the coast of Africa every time.
Otherwise GREAT APP!
The Manhattan subway map looks spectacular in high-res.
great app - needs schedules By: frrok - Oct 28, 2008 Version: 1.03 This is a great and useful app. I use it all the time to navigate the city. And since I am near a subway that seems to have work being done almost every weekend, the service advisories come in super handy. One thing that would make this app perfect would be schedules for each of the lines, like you get on MTA's website. It would come be very useful....say when you need to catch a flight early in the morning and you need to plan accordingly. PLEASE add schedules! thanks!
