Can't wait 4 the update! By: seedyh2008 - Feb 23, 2009 Version: 3.0 I can't live without this little app! My job is a line haul courier and it's a gas to track and time and keep an 'i' on just where I am on this small marble! Put cities and roads on the map might jazz it up but really, I'd pay $1.99 for the app if it has all the hy-ways an details and put the map on the map in the app!
This is the best of the gps's , to me!
Baba booey to ya all.....
Happy Holidayz....
More GPS apps should have a free version to try first By: wollja - Dec 6, 2009 Version: 9.0 After almost getting lost on a hike I decided I needed a good GPS. But, since I already had an Iphone 3GS I decided to just get an app. Most of the free ones didn't have tracks or waypoints. So, that left pay ones, and I didn't mind paying for a good one but wanted to try it out first. I love that MotionX has a free app so one can try it out first. I really like that I can cache maps for when I'm out of cell range. Of course I need to cache more than I can with the free app so I will buy the paid app shortly. At $2.99 it is a no brainer. It's an accurate, user friendly app, and I can buy the MotionX GPS app and their seperate turn by turn driving app for less money than I was about to pay for another GPS app only for hiking. The only downside to an IPhone for hiking is that the battery gets drained after 3-5 hours of GPS use. My hikes often last much longer than that, so I plan to get a case with a built in external battery to double my battery life.
Great navigation tool By: treehugr - Nov 16, 2009 Version: 8.0 Very complete solution. Takes some time to figure out how to fully leverage all of the tools - I actually downloaded the user manual from the web site and figured much of it out. But overall I would put this up against many of the $150+ handhelds out there today. The iPhone GPS may not be as accurate, but the interface is just as good or better in some ways...I'm a bit surprised the developers have included so much in the freee version. But I liked it so much I upgraded to the pro $3 version.
Loads of potential and well executed By: Yibble - 28-Nov-2009 Version: 8.0 For a cyclist tracking a route this is ideal. You can check your average speed, distance travelled and see the track on a satellite image. If combined with downloadable OS maps or similar this would be ideal for walkers too. Relying on a live connection on a walk out of the city for mapping may not be realistic although you could still record distances. This app is certainly worth a look and one of those that you can show to non-iphone users to impress them!
Awesome, read the details as I ran it against the new $500 Garmin Colorado C! By: PaddleSurf - Jan 11, 2009 Version: 2.1 This applications kicks the new Garmin ColoradoC. After using MotionX on my bike I decided to try it on a stand-up-paddle surfing expedition. The logistics are challenging because sooner or later you may "swim". Best water proofing: Zip-lock bag. That works like a charm. Yet after reading a review here and talking to a sailing friend who actually uses MotionX for sailing, I decided to double up on water-resistance and went and bought an Otter-Case. So now my setup is an iPhone-3G in an otter case, inside a zip-lock bag. It works like a charm. The beauty of this setup is that I can use the touch-screen, recall the application and keep on going. The Garmin unit is useless with it's cluttered UI. But here is the kicker: *DURING* my expeditions, I can send progress updates back to land automatically directly through the phone network and everyone can instantly visualize on Google Maps or Google Earth. Which leads me to the next set of praise: MotionX composes automatically a report that gets sent by email to whoever I choose. It's a one-click operation. Now I have started to use MotionX in my car and can signal my progress to the outside world. I can think of a few improvements and I can't wait for the new versions. MotionX has been great at constantly improving. PS For action Sports the button navigation beats the swipe gestures that are not practical...
I have tried them all and this is the best out there!!! By: Newanda1 - Jan 8, 2009 Version: 1.101 I downloaded all of the gps apps in the itunes store. I wanted to demo them all and pick the best to give my mom for christmas. She regularly gets lost in the small town she has lived for 20 years. I was amazed at how far above this app stood above the others. Much much more depth in this application than any of the others. Also many more ways the user can make choices to customize without being too technical or difficult. This application is far superior than any of the others. I am impressed and would highly recommend it!!
I can't believe this is FREE - 5 Stars ★★★★★ By: MacNastyiPhoner - Oct 18, 2009 Version: 7.2 ok.. this is amazing, love the facebook integration! I just downloaded today and can't get over that this is FREE!!! Why isn't it number 1 in the charts.? I haven't figured out everything yet but just downloaded the manual from the website. Just went for a drive, recorded a trail and emailed it to myself. I bought the paid for one right away cause it's only 3 dollars!!! and I want to record more trails. And the Topo/terrain maps are really great in the mountains. I live in the mountains and it's soo cool to see them on the map. So basically there is absolutely no reason in the world to not DOWNLOAD THIS NOW!
I use it in my car, on my bike, while hiking By: davidi - Jan 7, 2009 Version: 2.0 I really love version 2 of GPS lite. So much so, that I just purchased the $2.99 version to get the added features. I use the software on my iPhone3G in my car, on my bike, and also while I am hiking. Lots of different views, the built in compass, the waypoints and integration of a photo - when I forget what the waypoint intersection/fork looked like. I even use it to take pictures of interesting milestones along my treks.
This App Is Awesome!!! By: GospelGuy - Oct 15, 2009 Version: 7.2 Forget my first review. Dunno what happened? After mt first trek, the map was not displaying itself, and there were NO map options when you click on the caliper, but then today, all of a sudden, the options appeared miraculously and the maps drew themselves. Program is great! You can sync with Facebook and email the track also, and listen to your music and shoot pics all inside the app. Awesome!! Get this app!!
My Motion X Lite experience By: zue2 - Oct 9, 2009 Version: 7.0 Awesome for free APP. I recomment the paid verison becuase it has capability to store more than one waypoint and track. Free version is limited to one each. I find it difficult to figure out how to pull up maps and for the geo terrain maps I live in a flat area (DFW) and terrain does not display in fine detail liek the examples on the demo screen shots. Get it, play with it and get the paid app.
Superb for a free app By: wastedyuthe - 23-Oct-2009 Version: 7.2 This does exactly what it's supposed to do- works perfectly on my 3GS (don't know why other people are having issues). It picks up the GPS signal and displays its strength, follows you as you walk on a map and shows the path you have walked (it also can be used while driving, but I have dedicated sat-nav apps for that). Lots of options/tools available. I can't believe this is free! Well worth getting- better than the official Compass app by far.
Amazing! By: gopipgo - 16-Oct-2009 Version: 7.2 Works exactly as it should, I've just tested it out on a 25 mile bike ride and the result truly is outstanding. Haven't tried posting waymarks or taking photos etc with it yet, perhaps these are limited in the 'lite' version. It's not really clear what the limitations are exactly, but with something this good I'm firing out 1.79 right now! Not since Shazam have I used an app that's so simple and effective. Top marks!

So improved By: Markfd - 18-Apr-2009 Version: 4.2 tried the previous version of this app and thought,ok, nice try, but they have now taken it to another level. Interactive mapping for everywhere. I am in Hong Kong for a while and played with this on a walk today, and the map showed all the small paths, saved and emailed the track and photos to my family and is just excellent. All they need to do now is find a way to squeeze more time from the iphone battery...............................
Best App yet, regardless of price!!! By: Dallasdesigbbuild - Nov 21, 2008 Version: 1.101 Love it. Made a 600 mile road trip interesting and kept my pace during a 10k run. But the best use was a sailing regatta that help me find the last mark and determine the lee line in the dark.
Would like to suggest adding an adjustable timer to count down a race start sequence. It should have an audible 1 minute and 30 second warning; and a 10 second count down.
I will pay whatever for the premium version.
WOW By: Philm94 - 05-Mar-2009 Version: 3.2 The best GPS app on the store - nearly all the functions of a recreational gps unit are recreated here.
The ability to create a waypoints database is excellent, all can be shown as a distance and bearing from your current location. Or, Stick them onto the virtual compass and navigate by distance and bearing rather than street map - ideal for any activity in the great outdoors!
With a few improvements, such as proper trails creation, this could replace most entry level gps units.
#update#
it just gets better! Trails creation us there, as is terrain mapping and geotagged images.
(EDIT) The switch to opencyclemap for terrain is awesome. Seriously useful mapping!
When can I import GPX files? Oh pretty please!? Will buy pro when this feature hits.
Works for me By: Busch46 - 25-Nov-2008 Version: 1.2 Nice slick interfaces. Works in my car, and I don't see why it shouldn't? (aimed at previous complainer) The time that it takes to pin point your location using the GPS function within 'your' iPhone is no longer or shorter than any other gps based app. Remember, it is your gps that the app uses! So signal strength, interference etc is up to you, not the app. I was hanging onto an old Magellen gps that I bought a few years ago for several hundred $$. Looks like this free app has just replaced all the features that kept me hanging onto the old Magellen. Guess I can eBay it now.
Excellent By: Rip_Vega - 17-Jan-2009 Version: 2.1 I really love this app and can't wait for a non-lite version without the ads! It works extremely well and is really user friendly. The compass works even when walking and can easily be used to navigate to a waypoint. I have a Garmin Edge 305 that I use for mountain biking and with a few additional features in the next release, this could easily replace it. I would like to see the following, which I would gladly pay handsomely for: Download GPX breadcrumb trail to follow; Option to have 'map up' in trail view so that I'm always travelling towards the top of the screen; User selectable waypoint icons; Saving of track as GPX - email or ftp transfer to PC; Elevation profile of track. At this price it just can't be beaten - hence the 5 star rating.
Unbelieveable! By: macperry123 - Nov 1, 2008 Version: 1.101 This is by far the best GPS app available in the iTunes store (and I have them all). For the life of me I can't figure out why it's free! I have owned the Garmin StreetPilot since the day it came out, and I use it every day. This app gives the Garmin a run for it's money, and there is no reason why it can't eventually blow it away. The Garmin must use a processor consisting of two gerbils on a wheel, because it is frustratingly slow when it comes to searching for anything other than very easy directions. This app can tap into the much greater power of the iPhones processor to do just about anything you would want in a GPS. I hope MotionX continues to expand and develop this app!
