AT LAST!! what every iPod Touch user needs!  rating of OffMaps
By: belsunce - 18-May-2009
Version: 1.1
This is EXACTLY the kind of app I’ve been wanting for months and was so disappointed wasn’t included with the iPod Touch 2g when it came out back in September. The built-in map app is great if you’re in a hotspot somewhere, but for those who don’t have an iPhone, the moment you’re walking down the street with your iPod Touch, the built-in map app’s pretty useless. Wouldn’t it be great if you could download maps directly to your iPod for offline viewing? Wait, that’s exactly what this app does!! Just download what you need, no more, no less. Simple yet brilliant.
It’s not perfect yet; for instance the interface could be a little more user-friendly IMHO (maybe I’m dumb but I sort of stumbled on the menu by accident; it’s the little i at the bottom right corner of the screen for those who don’t see it either) but the developer is really nice and helpful. I emailed him some questions I had and I got a speedy reply to everything I asked. Super appreciated!
I already recommended this to all my iPod Touch-owning friends. By far the most useful app I’ve purchased so far. And not just for the traveler either. I’ve already downloaded a full map of my city. So practical. Love it.
One thing, if it’s not clear to you from the name: this is NOT a GPS and you need to download maps in a hot spot first. What you haven’t downloaded already won’t magically appear when you’re offline.
My rating: * * * * * out of 5

An app you should have...  rating of OffMaps
By: ActiveCap - Aug 14, 2009
Version: 2.1
This app does exactly what it says it does and does it well. It's one of those apps you should just have on your iPhone/iTouch for the times you really need it. It allows you to have maps wherever you are - hiking, boating, skiing, etc, even when you don't have a connection. It's a lifesaver and the developer should be congratulated and encouraged to continue to add more offline features. This app is definitely one of those that is worth it. I have no affiliation with the developer - I think some of the negative reviews here were from some competing products and are unfair. If you see a 1 star review for this app, it's a false review.

No more roaming charges!  rating of OffMaps
By: starjimstar - 6-May-2009
Version: 1.0
I have been waiting for an app like this ever since I got my iPhone. The built in GPS is one of the device's best features, but it is virtually useless if you are outside your coverage area unless you are prepared to pay outrageous roaming charges to download the maps. Felix has the solution: download the maps before you leave home and save your money.
Downloading a map is as easy as dragging your finger over an area, selecting the zoom level you require, and waiting (wait time varies greatly depending on the extent of your selection.) Also, any map you view while online is cached for later offline use just in case.
Limitations I have encountered are few: search within the app is only as specific as street, city, or country. When you are offline, it is limited to bookmarked locations only (so at least bookmark some known wireless hotspots if you want access to all the features you are used to.) All I am saying is; even though this is the perfect traveler's companion, don't get rid of the built in Maps just yet.
I would like to see the following features included in an update, and Felix has let me know they are on his to-do list. Download of maps should resume upon relaunching the app if it is interrupted by a phone call (or whatever.) And I would like to be able to set a "minimum zoom level" so I can select a wide area but store only street level maps (I can't imagine needing the wide continental views and they take substantial storage space.)
I would like to point out that even though I have some concerns about functionality, I have chosen to give this app a 5 star review because, since talking with Felix, I get the feeling he is eager to improve customer experiences. If you experience bugs or have suggestions for improvement; write him. The link is just below the app description and to the right of this review.

Wonderful App!  rating of OffMaps
By: Tinman@>@ - Nov 28, 2009
Version: 2.5.1
Ok this app has its shortfalls, but compared to anything out there this app is a gem. If your planning to travel, it's a must have. It will save you from buying costly roadmaps. The best thing about it is ability to measure your distint with set pins. With time, this app will become even more amazing. $3.99 is really a great deal for this kind of app. For updates, it would be nice to include a cyclist map from an open source provivder.

Absolutely fantastic!  rating of OffMaps
By: 2250Lou - Aug 3, 2009
Version: 2.1
I am blown away by this capability on my iPod Touch....
[Clearly some of the reviewers have no appreciation of the complexity of handling such maps off line on such a small device]
I am preparing for a 7 day trip to Venice, Florence, and Rome in two weeks and this is an ideal tool to carry the maps bookmarked with hotel, train, POI, etc locations....
Nothing could be more convenient than carrying all of this information around in a pant pocket.... unburdened by a heavy guide books with poor, out of date maps. .... I have yet to explore the Wikipedia features and can imagine it would be exciting to integrate audio podcasts into the maps as a future enhancement.
This has spurred my interest in GPS devices as an aid .... both to travel and to enhance the community map repository.
Kudos to the team... one and all...

Great app!  rating of OffMaps
By: 777Flyboy - Jul 22, 2009
Version: 2.0
The app does what it says. You get to choose how much detail you want to download on the map (zoom levels) and choose what portions of any city in the world you want to have in your pocket. I travel around the world and find this map app the most useful. I don't pay roaming charges with this, and the gps on the iPhone is great for tracking my position on my map. Well done guys this is well worth the $2 price tag...could have sold it for a lot more I'm sure! The updates keep getting better. Thanks.

Works really well, bookmarks are available offline! Routing rocks  rating of OffMaps
By: iphonemike09 - Jul 19, 2009
Version: 2.0
I don't understand the negative comments, I didn't have any problems with loading philadelphia entirely and loaded Montreal for my next trip to Canada. I found my hotel and added bookmarks for a few bars. It's nice to know that I can take this with me on my iPod touch. The maps might not be perfect everywhere, but just like Wikipedia OpenStreetMap will become better over time. This is a must have app for the home-screen!
Update 2.0: the new routing/directions make an already well defined app even better!

Works great on my iPod touch  rating of OffMaps
By: Jim Glidewell - Jul 17, 2009
Version: 2.0
I use this app all the time for a quick overview of local roads (Seattle area). For my area, the detail is very good, and the app is reasonably responsive for scrolling and zooming. The app has been steadily improving since the first release. A handy, inexpensive tool for those of us who want handheld maps but do not have an always-on network connection. If you want street maps on your iPod touch, this is the best app I've found...

Best map application if seen so far  rating of OffMaps
By: Coolusbtoys.com - Jun 6, 2009
Version: 1.2
I tested version 1.2 for a couple of days now and i have to say it is an impressive product.
First of all it offers all most all the maps you can dream of and they are openstreet maps so that means that even you can make them better.
It is easy just select the map part you want and then you are good to go, it works offline and the GPS from my iPhone 3G works great it super fast and pretty acurate.
It is fun to drive around town with and seeing how it keeps up and telling you how fast you are going and in witch direction.
Let me end this by saying for this price this is the best piece of map software for the iPhone out there. Go get it yourself and give it a try.

awesome  rating of OffMaps
By: wompedy - Jun 1, 2009
Version: 1.1
This is great! I think the other reviewers must have hit something at an off moment, cause I haven't had any problems with the maps coming in (for me it works at all zoom levels just as it should). Being able to look at maps and plan where I'm going while underground on the subways is worth having to download the entire NYC map close up (250mb). But this has just been for testing purposes. More practically I can't wait to use this when I go to Europe in a few months. My previous trips there I've lamented that I couldn't use Google Maps on my iPhone without paying a FORTUNE in roaming data charges, so OffMaps is going to be a life (well, big money) saver!
UPDATE: The updates have improved this app, making it even better than when I first reviewed it. I can't figure out why people keep complaining about the map filling in with grey boxes, I have yet to encounter this.

Killer App!  rating of OffMaps
By: Martin.S.S. - May 18, 2009
Version: 1.1
Wow, I’ve been waiting for an App like this for so long. As I travel a lot abroad I will have benefited (savings on roaming charges) from buying this App within 2 Weeks. I’m sure that the developers aren’t great business men as they could have easily asked for double the price.
OffMaps is really intuitive and flexible to use and the offline bookmarks as well as the search function make it a very powerful tool!
Hats off to the developers, even though I am now wondering why it took so long to create the perfect addition to the preinstalled Google maps App.
Like the App before the update – love it now!

This is the only app worldwide, regardles of jailbreak or not that offers maps of CUBA at street level in Havana, even more if you consider that they dont have data capabilities and you can just download and save any area of the world inside your iphone,it even allows you to custom insert points and description inside the map ,thanks to yeni for showing me this app, well worth the 3 dollars... Esta es la unica aplicacion en el mundo con mapas de CUBA para orientarse con GPS y te permite grabar tus puntos favoritos y nombrarlos a tu gusto.

Brilliant for popular towns and cities  rating of OffMaps
By: Roy Sinclair - 01-Oct-2009
Version: 2.2.1
A great app for iPod touch users, and iPhone users abroad who want to save money. True, when I looked at the small town I visit in Portugal, only the main roads were showing, and when I looked at the mountain-top Italian town of Fiuggi there were no roads marked at all, but the OpenStreetMap project is growing every day and with this app you can even add your own improvements. For mainstream towns it is truly awesome. In my UK home town someone has even added all the post-boxes, pubs, restaurants and disabled parking slots - beat that Google!
It also does route planning on foot or by car, and ties in with your current location if known.
For the pittance that it costs I can't see how anyone can complain about this brilliant app. Well done Felix :)

No.1 app for the Touch!  rating of OffMaps
By: rockstar1_86 - 24-Aug-2009
Version: 2.1
This has now become the number 1 app for my iPod Touch. Unlike other offline maps, you get to choose the bits of the map you want and not restricted to having one city. In other words, you get to choose any city and any part of a particular city from one app. Fantastic!!!
A nice touch (excuse the pun) is the opportunity to select the resolution of the maps... so if you're iPod Touch is low on disk space you can choose to sacrifice the detailing of your saved maps. The only drawback is the inability to search for locations from a saved map whilst offline. But that would be asking too much (due to technical limitations.)
Just think about it... any map you want from one application. I take my hat off to Felix (the developer.) Definitely a must for all Touch owners.

Excellent, great app!  rating of OffMaps
By: Willsmithorg - 04-Aug-2009
Version: 2.1
Update - 22 Jun, using this on holiday in Brussels and Antwerp, map detail good enough to get me around fine, thanks to the members of the public who mapped these areas already. Only needed Google maps once, barely used guidebook poor map. ---Original review 10 Jun----- People complaining about the maps - clearly these will get better over time. It's not the fault of this app, which is extremely well implemented. How about a "show detail" mode - when viewing a zoomlevel, use say shades of orange/red for each area to show when more detail is available. This would take the guesswork out of pre-loading the cache. Give the app 1Gb or so off cache and you've hugely detailed maps ready for a European tour. Saves exhorbitant roaming costs and paper maps. Apps like this make the iPhone sing!

Greeat app, great concept  rating of OffMaps
By: Sterrer_Scott - 19-Jul-2009
Version: 2.0
First I just want to say how great this product is - new update with sale on with routing etc. caught my eye when browsing the app store . I haven't used it before, so cant comment on the previous software updates, but can highly recommend this application to anyone out there to save money, time and effort if you have no data connection. Saying that, I just want to take a few secs to examine some of the feedback this app had got, spec. the negative ones, and explain why these people are being unfair and unrealistic about their wishes for a 2 quid app (compare the price, say, to a load of the stuff sold and its not that much), so apologies for the mini-rant/lecture but here goes:
People writing on here don't seem to be able to grasp the fundamentals of the OpenStreetMap concept/organisation (or haven't bothered to look), and have therefore (unfairly imo) clouded the judgement of what is a great app with niggly little "server-side" issues such as lees detail than googlemaps. For those not in the know, OSM is FREE of ALL proprietary copyright (unlike OS, googlemaps, and all satnav stuff), and is submitted by "normal" people by and large who walk/cycle around "gps-tagging" roads etc - so is FAR more dependant on good will of individuals than gmaps. That is why some roads are inaccurate (as someone may not walk down EVERY single roadin a town f they don't have the time) - BUT it is a Free and Open Source project, they WILL be constantly updating the database so in future coverage will get better and better, etc.
With these improvements the software will get updated, undoubtably FOC for those who already have it.
Finally. let me ask those that gave it 1/2 start a quick question - would you rather have NO maps on your iphone/ipod touch, instead carrying around a map of everywhere you go, spend 50+ quid on the satnav software OR a separate satnav, or spend the 1-2 quid it costs for this application to allow you to access and d/l the ONLY source of maps that you CAN d/l (again due to copyright restrictions, people like the OS and google have to have full control over their maps and use for them).

Works really well, bookmarks are available offline! Routing and groups rock  rating of OffMaps
By: iphonemike09 - Oct 29, 2009

Finally: groups for bookmarks. This is becoming a very well rounded app. Well done, devs.

App brilliant, map getting better...  rating of OffMaps
By: memoryweaver - 03-Jun-2009
Version: 1.2
Yes, the map isn't as detailed (yet) as Google Maps, but for the Ipod Touch, this is the only way to get maps when offline. The Open Streetmap data is far from perfect, but continually improving -- in fact, this app inspired me to go and get the GPS out and map some of the missing areas. Scrolling and simultaneously zooming the cached map is brilliant - if only the car satnav was that easy to use. As a general offline roadmap and occasional street map (you can check the coverage areas before buying by visitiing the OpenStreetMap site) this performs very well. It would be nice to be able to download more than 50MB at a time, and the 'Clear Cached Area' function doesn't work very well, but overall well worth the money.

Great App!  rating of OffMaps
By: OliverTheWolf - 28-May-2009
Version: 1.1
This is great app, but it does have a few thoings that could be improved on, such as the lack of street names in suberbs such as Willetton, I could not find a single street name in that area besides Karel Avenue also there are many others places without street names, also a great addition would be directions from one place to another that would be absolutely awesome. But even with those problems/possible improvements this app is great. 5 stars all the way!

Good app! (For offline map veiw only)  rating of OffMaps
By: x hArRiSoN413 - Sep 28, 2009
Version: 2.2.1
For what I want it to do. I didn't mind paying 2.99+ tax for an app that just allowed me to have map data offline. I use with a iPod touch so this is perfect. Only problem is you can't get directions offline.. And the search for an address is not very good at all. But if you just want to be able to see maps offline and view your current location this app if for you. Anything more hold on to your money untill this app is update or there is another one that could do more.
