Reviews:
Great App and totally worth the discounted price. By: gfilev - 27-Sep-2009 Version: 7.71.4 This is a brilliant app and the new updates are welcomed. Easy to use and accurate on the most part. Very quick to pick up GPS signal and Text 2 Speech works well when you select a voice with TTS next to the name. What I would like to see in the next update is Simon's voice being TTS enabled as I liked the sound of that particular voice best. A new map update would be great before the year is out. I also use a Griffin iTrip Auto Pilot that powers the iphone and whenever I change a song using the buttons on the unit it sends the iphone screen to sleep. This is a bit annoying when you are being navigated and you have to reboot the screen each time you change a song. Don't know if this is a Griffin hardware issue or Sygic software issue? The fade out of music to zero volume while the voice instructions play is a little disruptive. Must say I didn't have an issue with it the way it was before the change was made. I guess I would preffer that the music faded to 50% while the voice commands are heard and then back up to 100% when done so it is less disruptive. These are only cosmetic suggestions. Other than that I am very happy with the purchase.
I'd be lost (literally) without it! By: Hellboy44 - 26-Sep-2009 Version: 7.71.4 A fine GPS that I use constantly. Had it for 2 weeks or so and in that time I've seen NOTHING that would make me want to return it.
Accurate Maps that seem up to date (the missus & I tested it locally in Brisneyland - had some pretty recent locations) and I was shocked at how many POI's there were!
To the reviewer who couldn't get a GPS lock at all - where do you live, the moon?!?!?
Honestly, all this talk of not getting a GPS lock (for ANY of the Apps) guys - use a phone cradle!! Or maybe it's a phone case problem..? (I mean, I've actually had a signal lock sitting INSIDE OUR UNIT - yes, really!!!)
Waiting for the update Now...
Why are Apple stalling? Is this a deliberate pay off by the other App makers???
Rated 4 stars, but I will revisit this review when the update (finally!) gets released.
***UPDATE***
The good:
1. The GPS lock does seem faster & more solid ( there wasn't anything really wrong with it before...)
2. Fonts are bigger & better placed re readability.
The "annoying":
1. Apparently not all the voices (English or otherwise) are Text to speech, & if you're unfamiliar with GPS's (like I am) you won't necessarily know to look in the voice menu for the "TTS" markings.
So I don't blame anyone (including myself) for not twigging to this.
The text to speech is, for the most part, good to excellent.
2. Ironically, one of the many notable anomolies I've discovered in the Text to speech pronunciation is "St Vincent Road" (Saint Vincent Road") being spoken as "Street Vincent". Ironic because as it's been noted in reviews above, Addresses must be typed in full (Street, NOT St) in contacts, if they're to be used from the App for navigation purposes.
Do I still recommend this App?
Sure, it's great value still overall, ESPECIALLY with the (temporary) price drop.
Do I like the update?
Well, I can say (now), yes, but more support should be given to GPS newbies in the Appstore notes re: the update.
Im happy with my purchase. By: Apple 3GS - 01-Nov-2009 Version: 7.71.4 I dont know how good Tom Tom or Navigon is but Sygic is very good IMO, Im happy that I spent the money to buy it. Ultimately thats a sign of a good purchase, your happiness post purchase! I have a few comments that could improve Sygic, faster loading time, a better userface, but ultimately in the most important factors in terms of arrival at your destination quickly and efficiently without hassle, Sygic rules. I guess the only true way to identify the better product is to have three iphones all lined up with the same destination on the same network and observe which one is more efficient. Givent that for most that this is not possible, best to go with the masses that vouch for Sygic. Make sure in your contacts you enter the details in correctly and no abbreviations Sygic doenst like that !!!!! 9/10
Brillant By: Vbfyjjcgghb - 29-Oct-2009 Version: 7.71.4 I will keep it short and sweet. This app is brillant and x3 better than the other navigation apps - even value for money wise Tom Tom I wouldn't even put it in the navigation category as it's an extremely poor product operationally speaking. It's like they dont even care about their product to improve it. I can't belive they expect people to pay $100 for it - it's highway robbery at it's finest. So this product with the support gets the big thumbs up! Well done!!
Works great! A great start! By: sweetchilliphil - 24-Sep-2009 Version: 7.71.4 Audio is ok, not fantastic, but I'm not too fussed, just plugged it to my car stereo.
It's accurate enough for me! I don't need the app to put my exactly 3mm to my destination. As long as it's around 2 - 5m I'm happy! But there are some improvements I'd like to see...
The first is iPod integration! I'd would be great to be able to play my music while being directed. So when sexy Simon tells me to turn right after 200m my music slightly fades out.
I'd also like to see address book intergration, so I can just grab a contacts address, easier and more convenient, instead of my copy and pasting from my address book.
Excellent start! Excited to see the next update!
Electronics Engineer & Traveller By: William G Baker - 21-Oct-2009 Version: 7.71.4 I purchased both the Australian and UK apps, and now three days back from rhe UK,.after a three week tour of London to Norwich to Wales to Landsend to London again.I hadn,t been on 90% of the roads before and the app did not let me down, not once! I put my families holiday in this programs hands and it did not let us down. I have also used the Aussie app in Sydney, Canberra and Brisbane betore and after the holiday and it performed well. Great job for a program that really costs so little. Thank You
Great update, thanks! By: darwiniandude - 24-Sep-2009 Version: 7.71.4 Updated review:
Well this new update is brilliant. The new UK Text to Speech voices sound nice, better than Alex in OS X even. At first I couldn't navigate to contacts but realized the address details must say Street, not St. Other than that, brilliant. By far the most functional GPS app, locks on instantly for me in the windscreen holder.
Old review:
This is a quick update to my review as I've used this a lot more now, and learnt the interface. (I've read the manual)
It's actually very powerful, like setting in heaps of destinations and it will calculate the most efficient route to tackle them all. The promised update should help with it's non-iPhone like interface, and that'll be good. But after toying with navigon I'd rather the features over a pretty GUI anyday for this type of app. Good value too, $20 less than Tom Tom which I haven't tried, but sygic includes NZ too.
Last review below:
This update fixes most of the minor niggles, well done guys. The only thing I think you really MUST add is address book import. You need to be able to navigate to an address in the phones address book.
Earlier review by me below:
Shows speed zones correctly, locks on quickly and is mostly very accurate, except on the expressway where it thinks I'm travelling on a minor small road that runs parallel to the highway. Audio is loud ( just turn up whilst talking )
Yes they need to intergrate address book data and enable the voice to speak the same time as your iPod, but I'm happy with this app.
You get better coverage with any gps app if you have it in a windscreen holder; better view of the sky.
The 3G has no compass, so it can only tell a direction change when you've gone in one direction for awhile. Knowing this hardware limitation I've been impressed with how well it does work. Cost me $60 AUD because ofrhe Big W 2x $20 iTunes cards for $30 special :)
Works really well...highly recommended! By: BennyBoy75 - 18-Oct-2009 Version: 7.71.4 Great app, works really well. GPS locks quickly and app is snappy, albeit (as previously mentioned) not taking full advantage of all I-phone features (e.g. pinch zoom etc) - you get used to this though so not much of an issue, just "would be nice". Not sure how to activate red light camera warnings as I drove past one and nothing mentioned on the app?. Bought a windscreen mount and this (Kensington brand cost $39 from DSE) improved the GPS reception significantly, would recommend getting one not only for this reason but makes it a lot easier to use when driving (and complies with the road rules...recently got a $300 fine for "using hand held mobile phone" when just holding my I-phone (NOT on a call)...be careful, or get a windshield mount. A couple of comments to improve the app: - would be much better if the voice instructions came over Ipod music, i.e. not fading in and muting the music - if there are many turns to take you lose the song you are listening to. - some of the maps seems a little out of date and some no right turns are not recognised - please update the maps Overall, this is a really awsome app and does the job well (and cheaper than other apps which don't seem as good from the reviews) - highly recommended! Keep the updates rolling in, map updates please!
Fantastic and much better than my NAVMAN By: Maxdive - 23-Sep-2009 Version: 7.71.4 I have to say that I'm very impressed with this application. I've been using it for about 3 weeks now including a trip up to Broken Hill from Melbourne and back. I've had a NAVMAN for about about a year and a half and I've found that Sygic does everything my NAVMAN does better. Here's some key points: - NAVMAN $280 + Updated Maps $180 + Traffic Update Receiver $90 = $550 / Sygic $79 - NAVMAN can't get a satellite fix while the car is in the carport, at best it takes 3-5mins and somtimes can't get a fix at all if started in the City until I clear buildings. Sygic - instant in my car port, 30 secs inside the house, 2 mins in the CBD. I havn't tried the new update yet - Address search in NAVMAN is combersome, you need to search street then scroll through all the streets to find your suburb / Sygic Suburb then street search is much easier - Voice guidance with Sygic is much nicer to listen to and street names are announced, NAVMAN sounds like a haggered barmaid - Alternate route functions seem to provide sensible suggestions on Sygic, NAVMAN doesn't have this feature - Sygic comes with NZ maps / NAVMAN charges an extra $200 for that - Sygic allows you to browes your route wich is handy if you want to check where you're headed half way through the trip / NAVMAN has a coumbersom scroll feature that basically means you can't do this - Rerouts are instant with Sygic / Navman can hang for up to a minute - this means you miss the new turn, then it takes another minute to rerout and you miss the next. This has actually happened to me - NAVMAN lane guidance only comes on premium models / Sygic standard - The only thing my NAVMAN does that Sygic doesn't is provide traffic updates and this is an effective services BUT because the NAVMAN takes so much time to rerout and the traffic updates work by the unit constantly rerouting until it hits a rout without traffic (basically trial and error) it can take more than 10 mins to give you a route without traffic during peak hour, so I'm willing to do without that. I'm using the Belkin FM transmiter/mount to use my iPhone in the car, this allows my to make hands free calls, play music and hear my Sygic instructions through the stereo. It's not in the ideal position due to the location of my power socket, but the Sygic instructions allow me to focus on the road without checking the map anyway. All FM transmitters can have a bit of static, but I think I've tuned the settings so it works ok now. My NAVMAN is now in my glove box and all it's silly cables and mounts etc, the iPhone Sygic combination proves to be a much better alternative to dedicated unit. I have no hestiations to recomend this application over a NAVMAN.
Welcome Update By: Phantomzzz - 18-Oct-2009 Version: 7.71.4 What a difference an update can make. I was a little dissapointed when I first purchased the application because it was far from accurate. The software sometimes showed me being on parallel roads some 50 or so meters away. I didn't complain because the cost wasn't anywhere near what I would pay for a standalone unit. However I needed to use thi app the other day as I was lost driving my daughter to a party and wow what a difference. I have done the iPhone update and the app update recently and now its very accurate. I'm so impressed how much better it is now to what it was when I first purchased it. I highly reccomend this product now to anyone.

Brilliant - Sygic do listen By: BuffStuff - 23-Sep-2009 Version: 7.71.4 The update has made this a fantastic app and I have upgaded my previous review from 4 to 5 stars. The new text-to-speech works really well. For those having issues you have to choose the voice with TTS next to it. It locks onto GPS very quick and now with the update gives very smooth directions. Maps are accurate with some very good functionality with POIs and being able to look up addresses from contacts is great. Can't wait for further updates especially to have to functionality of the iphone UI. Thanks to Sygic for all your hard work.
Forget the rest buy the best By: Jackyboy0 - 23-Sep-2009 Version: 7.71.4 I bought this app when it first became available cause i needed a gps that i could take with me and not leave in the car i was impressed with the 1st version but it had a few short falls then i read about navicon and Tom Tom coming so i thought hey these guys will get it right but i have bought and the Navicon even with their updates its slow as a wet week getting Sat locations and cant find half the places. Tom Tom was toooo exspensive and didnt have anything better to offer and no extra maps they have just thumbed their noses at us Phone users thinking that the real money is in the Navigtors. Sygic and the staff take a bow u guys are the best and your app is smooth, fast and tops ,price is great customer satisfaction from me100% i use it every day in my line of work no dramas at all and extra maps for NZ is a bonus ur just leaving the others wanting. Your were the first to offer it and you have improved it out of sight. Thanks
Nice upgrade, thanktou By: Kool68 - 23-Sep-2009 Version: 7.71.4 **Update**
I just installed the .4 update. Quite dissappointing really. Trying the address book function, it couldn't recognize 4 out of 5 adresses. I checked the same ones in Navigon & they were all recognized.
Sorry Tomtom. You've missed the boat! This does navigation very well. It's very quick & accurate on my 32Gb 3GS on the Optus network. The only thing I'd like to see added is:
Phone integration
Select destination from address book &
Have audio transmit to Bluetooth car kit
This excellent GPS app works perfectly on my 3GS & my wife's 3G iPhone.
Navigation By: Chr99 - 22-Sep-2009 Version: 7.71.1 I can't understand why Apple is taking so long to pass on the upgrade?? Maybe Apple is delaying for the sake of Tom Tom, it shouldn't take this long.....
I have been using this in the Brisbane area and it works well. The only complaint I have us it uses route numbers over street names. Saying that it appears this issue will be resolved in the upgrade awaiting Apple's approval. I have seen the competition and this is definately better.
Accurate By: Sumitver - 21-Sep-2009 Version: 7.71.1 Tested on a trip from Adelaide to Melbourne. It worked like a champ. It was 100% accurate. Got signal in 5 seconds. Buyers pls keep in mind to buy a windscreen mount for iphone otherwise this app will b less accurate, you will hv more lost signals, it will take ages to lock the gps signal and you will end up being frustrated like I was before I bought windscreen mount. Awaiting for the latest update.
Super Impressed By: Apk780419 - 06-Oct-2009 Version: 7.71.4 I have been using this app for a few days now and I am happy to say that this is every bit as good as any portable GPS that I have used. Consider the $60 price tag and this app is amazing value. The phone sits in the center console of my Honda Accord where it's connected to a iPod intergration kit. When the voice commands come in the music fades out and instructions come over the factory speakers. The signal strength is great even in the center console (no need for a windscreen mount to get a signal). The maps are easy to read, the instructions are clear and route calculations are super quick.Given that $60 is such a minor spend for such a great application this is a must have for all iPhone users
Love it! By: Emza0609 - 10-Sep-2009 Version: 7.71.1 This works really well. Haven't had any connection or lag problems at all. Works as accurately and smoothly as any GPS unit I used. Once the new features are released (voice to text) then it will be even better. My only small gripe would be in search having to input a suburb before street name. As often you know the street name but not the suburb. Also direct search for an intersection would be good. Im sure these things will get sorted down the track, so for now I highly recommend it. Oh, female English voice would be nice too.
Excellent!! By: derpppp - 05-Oct-2009 Version: 7.71.4 I have tried tomtom and this, and tomtom doesnt even compare, could never find a gps lock with tomtom but with sygic i get one within 15 seconds. I live in Melbourne, it never seems to lag, it is spot on. I bought this app when it was $79 and i would happily pay more for it. So $59 is a bargain!, i recommend this app to anyone! Some things i would like to see in future updates: I would like to see Ipod integration. So i dont have to close the whole program just to change a song. If this is included, this would be the ultimate navigaton app and would make the Iphone more appealing to non-iphone users! great work sygic!!
great app By: luke.irves - 04-Oct-2009 Version: 7.71.4 love this App. have been looking at navigation apps for a few months and decided to get this one as is seems to fit my needs much better.pros -sat lock time is short, much better than my wifes navman.-main menus quite easy to use-iPod fades out during directions and comes back after, speed alert works the same.-works realy well in portrait mode, I actually prefer it at the moment.-lane assistant Is a great function- love the fact you can set it to avoid tolls, not avoid tolls or ask each time you navigate somewhere it is taking you throught tolls. I missed that function on my wifes navmancons-control are not native iPhone so the keyboard controls are all in the wrong places, if you are used to iPhone keyboard it I frustrating.-no pinch zoom-no finger scrolling on menus, you have to use the strange buttons on the right to scroll up and down-auto day/night mode is not always correct. could be my settings are wrong but at 9am this morning it thought it was still night.- the buttons for 'route me' in the navagate to and the 'agree' button in the disclaimer are way too small. these should be much bigger for people with fat fingers as these are buttons you always need to press constantly.all in all it a great app, just a few small gripes
Great value for money & it works! By: jimmybiggs1974 - 03-Oct-2009 Version: 7.71.4 It's a great little unit. Easy to use, great with my S1 Bluetooth, easy to understand (voice commands) and simple to set up. Maps have been thus far flawless. I was in the market to get a GPS unit and compared this to the price and functionality of other stand alone systems. Considering it's the cheapest, you get unlimited maps (superb selling point) and it actually works, this program stands alone. The only downside I can find is that's it's a tiny bit slow in built up areas with small tight streets. But considering my old mans Tom Tom is not any better (and triple the price), I ask myself why pay for other programs that deliver nothing more? Very happy with it's performance, highly reccommended.
