Reviews:
Works great for me!!! By: OUsooner08 - Aug 20, 2009 Version: 1.0 I have no idea what some of these bad reviews are about. I've downloaded this app Monday and have been using it everday with very few complaints.
I bought a $19.99 a/c vent holder at Target and have my iPhone mounted on the vent next to my steering wheel and it has worked flawlessly.
I really don't care about the fact it doesn't say the street names (I turn the volume off on all my GPSs). I can look down and see the street I need to turn on to, some people are just completely lazy. Also you can actually browse the map, click on a POI and select a rang of options from call, to navigate to. Another poster said you couldn't do that but I did it and It only took me about 10 minutes messing with the app to figure it out.
Even when I loose cellphone signal the Tomtom app kept me on course. I even took a call from my girlfriend and talked to her using my blutooth while still using the tomtom app to get home.
The IQ routes are great, the first day I used it the app took me a different route home and it shaved 15 minutes off my drive time.
My only complaint so far is that it doesn't have the car kit with the GPS enhancer out yet, but even still I have no problem navigating with my $20 Target vent mount.
Great app, all the complainers need to actually use it to travel extensively before griping. I'm in the middle of a 3 state trip and I've yet to have a single issue.
We have a winner By: majorgearhead - Nov 27, 2009 Version: 1.2 TomTom updated the app with TTS, lane assist and other things while updating the maps and iq routes db. I've used it a bit since the update release and it is GREAT! Now all we need is the ability to purchase and use premium features like traffic and weather.Good Job TomTom. I am glad I purchased this app.Update: Purchased the car kit as well and I am really impressed. This is one nice piece of kit. Not only does it give the TomTom app an instant fix, it works great with my other GPS based apps. All that plus great hands free and audio out. I'm loving it.
TomTom App By: Yuille - Aug 20, 2009 Version: 1.0 This is and outstanding app, just like my TomTom GO 720. This app offers some of the same features, if you've ever used a Tomtom, then this app is no different. But the one thing I did notice is that you will most probably need the TomTom car kit, because it has a stronger GPS receiver. You can still recieve a signal, and directions using your iPhone. TomTom has release the car kit is the US as yet, I talked to a representative from TomTom, and he doesn't know when and at what price it will be marketed at. But i love the capability it now gives you , unlike the Google map feature, that gives you a blue line to follow, and no clear turn by turn instructions. The app is priced for $99, that is marketed at the lowest price GPS you can purchased. You will enjoy this app trust me, I just wish the iPhone's speaker was louder, but the car kit will take care of that. Buy it and enjoy the seamless navigation possibilities that your iphone can offer you. Just my two cents.
Is that a Tom Tom in your pocket? By: FunnyClown - Aug 20, 2009 Version: 1.0 It gets five star just for making a Tom Tom app for my iPhone. Thank you for that. The app still needs improvement. It needs to allow for cut and paste address. It needs voice recognition and it should voice the street names your turning on. It also needs to allow me to buy upgrade voice pack for "The Simpsons".
But I gave it a full test drive today and it worked great. I love how it recalculates on the fly if I take a detour. It was worth my $100. I hope Tom Tom will do regular updates. It is great but needs improvement. I can't wait for the car kit.
Great application... Highly recommend it! By: Racelance - Nov 26, 2009 Version: 1.2 The latest update really made this app worth every penny. I'm terrible with directions and can't thank Tom Tom enough for creating such a great product. If you are considering purchasing this app but are tentative like I was I'd recommend pulling the trigger. It paid for itself the first time I was lost without a gps then I pulled my iPhone out and smiled the rest of the way to my destination. Great job Tom Tom team!
Works great. By: TheMexicanNerd - Nov 26, 2009 Version: 1.2 Works great now. I use it all the time. I only have a problem with the volume control. Every time I turn on the app after having my phone on vibrate it has the volume all the way down. And the only time I can turn up the volume is when the voice is saying something so I have to guess when it's talking to turn it up. You should make it so that as soon as the app is on I have full control of the volume, even when the voice isn't talking.
finally!!!! By: y2guru - Nov 26, 2009 Version: 1.2 My first review so here goes.... Ive been waiting for a true turn by turn nav app since the 1st gen iphone and now tom tom has delivered, i am not disappointed at all, yes its version 1 and yes im sure they can make some tweaks here and there but it does the job very very well, it is well worth the money. Only inclusion i would like to see in 1.1 would be the ability to integrate a google/yahoo company address lookup
It's worth it! By: adamboy71 - Aug 19, 2009 Version: 1.0 I have never had a turn-by-turn navigator for my car before, although I have messed around with them a little. Most of the negative reviews complain about a lack of features as compared with TomTom's devices. To me, the great thing about owning an iPhone is that you have just one device that does it all. This app works really well on the iPhone and I feel certain that more features will become available as future updates surface. If you have been holding off getting a navigation device because you've been waiting on this app, get it... It works very well and it's worth it.
The best By: umairrr - Nov 24, 2009 Version: 1.2 i`m a long time user of att navigator but my iphone was crashing again and again for using att navigator so i decided to buy tom tom and it was a really wise decision for me first of all this application does not require att network coverage so we can use it even if we dont have att`s retarted network coverage secondly when we use this app in the bottom left it shows the speed limit on which we are driving and if we exceed the speed limit the sign turns red to warn us automatically what a great feature and i found navigation far better than other apps on the market .. with this app u can change your route style to either go by freeways or prefer streets avoid highways of pedestrian mode .. this is a fantastik app that work without the att`s network like any other portable gps device .. so fcuk att and fcuk att`s navigator that come with a 10 dollar every month charge .. tom tom is the best
TomTom app works great By: esprits300 - Nov 23, 2009 Version: 1.2 i have both tomtom and navigon and i recently put them both to the test. while both are nice apps, i found the tomtom to outperform the navigon. the navigon had a lot of bells and whistles but it was not as straight forward as the tomtom. i found navigon to be off by just a bit and very slow to load. tomtom was quite fast to load, and route and the advanced routing features were really helpful, something i havent found on the navigon yet, or possibly looking in the wrong place (its not as intuitive as tomtom). i wrote this review because i read a lot of bad reviews about tomtom. it isnt as flashly as navigon, ill admit and it doesnt have advanced features. in the end, its easier to read and use, and clearly a more polished navigation product. its simplicity and accuracy make it my favorite, although you wouldnt go wrong with navigon either.

Very useful By: Jaymouxxx - Sep 14, 2009 Version: 1.0 This is a honest non biast review of the tomtom app. I bought it two weeks ago and used it about 10 times since. Testing the areas I knew and didn't know. It works good with and without reception. Tomtom incorporates I assume with your speed where you are on the road if u lose reception / signal so it almost always works. I noticed you can't have a wireless connection connected when you use it or u get no signal. It is generally accurate as far as fastest route and I have had no crashes or bugs with it on my 3gsiphone. I feel it is easy to use and rather fast. Definately could use a few kinks worked out with autoreroute if a bridge or something is under construction but it is generally good.
Great Mobile GPS! By: Dustin Day - Aug 19, 2009 Version: 1.0 This app is pretty amazing for the iPhone. It has voice guided turns, approx. aproach distance, live traffic info, great graphics (comparable to the actual standalone GPS), easy to use, very fast recalculations (missed turns), and as well as overall great POI features! It has a lot of the same extras as the actual standalone GPS which is another reason that I am glad that I have purchased it. The only downfall that I noticed was that it took 2 hours to download over my wifi directly to the phone(25mbs connection) and that it does not read the street names out loud (only the direction to go turn wise). It is a great mobile GPS solution!!
Good needs to compete with more features By: Eyecon831 - Nov 22, 2009 Version: 1.2 I still like TT maps, streets more legible than navigon. Also seeing route directions first is important to me. Also works better from contacts . Deserves more than two starsNov 12Still get better directions with TT. Hopefully next update will bring up to par.11/22/09Update great best lane guidance and voice. navigon may have traffic but directions are not the fastest route each time I compare it to TT or my nuvi 885t Tom Tom best tet for iPhone I've bought most of apps didn't not try Magellan soon can't compare
turn by turn By: 777jetpilot - Aug 19, 2009 Version: 1.0 great app and glad I switched from ATT nav to this. have not tried other nav apps such as navigon but no regrets about not trying them because this is going to be the one to have. i agree with all the other reviews about what is missing and what it should add with future versions. one annoying thing is the constant announcements of turns ahead when all it is a big bend in the road not an actual right or left turn, this can be misleading. also the location by address of my home is off by 1/2 mile, but att nav and google do the same thing. maybe I'm living in the wrong house?? anyway good for the $$ and let's hope for continued add on's and features.
The Best Gps system for iPhone By: hmanacot - Nov 22, 2009 Version: 1.2 When I decided to but TomTom V.1I was really surprise about all the bad review that he got it, however having TT Navigon 6 on my HTC for a long time I finally trust them. I'm going offen the USA for mu work and I was there the first 2 weeks of Novembe. When I tried I already got the version V1.1 and The ttdock. He worked perfectlu must of the time. TT they have to update the map for Dallas TX (there is a new highway that is just partiali open and je doesn't exist on TT. Houston TX worked fond. Atlanta GA also. I will try The new version The 3 week of January in Chicago IL/Boston MA and Washington DC I Will let you know.TT car kit: Fantastic is exactlu what I expected. I suppose that one day hé Will have one more powerfull on GPS signal hé Will be amaising. The price maybe a little bet expansive but worth.
Love the multitouch map browsing By: . - Aug 19, 2009 Version: 1.0 My old standalone GPS got me where I needed to go, but it was lousy for browsing the map. Even if I could find my destination on (say) a paper map, the primitive touchscreen interface on the standalone GPS made it very difficult to find my destination on the device. The TomTom iPhone App, however, makes great use of multitouch to let me zoom in and out to browse maps easily and to explore the surrounding area, rather than just go from one place to another. And I love the multiple languages! I drove around last night with the Japanese voice turned on, just for practice. Very cool!
Great! By: Srfrboybob - Nov 21, 2009 Version: 1.2 I was on the market for a Gps and I heard Tomtom was coming so I waited. I am very happy with this app. I used it to go to work and I ended up saving 10 mintues on an 1.5 hour drive. It doesn't sound like much but it can make all the difference when you are in the car for an average of 3 hours a day. I almost got the AT&T app but $10 month to my bill! $120 a year... Every year! This app does everything I wanted and more. I have a rotating mount for my car and I use my my right ear bud on my headphones. Awesome!
Release 1.21 By: brentschool - Oct 3, 2009 Version: 1.0 I find this app to be just a bit pricey, considering you can get the low end stand alone product for the same amount of money, but outside of that I am very happy with this app. Now I have just one piece of equipment to worry about, and it's always on me anyway. It works well with the music, pausing it when it needs to speak, and if you are wired into your speaker system it is so nice to hear the voice over the car speakers. I probably will shell out the extra for the holder when it comes out, though it really isn't necessary, just that it's smaller than the one I use now. I do not miss the text to speech as that almost always mispronounces names anyway. This does the job fine of getting me around and I don't miss all the extras of the more expensive units. I have had three various models before, but now it's included on my iPhone at last. I've had no problems using it or installing it, and it doesn't seem to use much battery power at all. I should note that I just upgraded my iPhone 3G to the latest update just prior to installing this. It would be nice if they continue to update this app. It could use some tweeking to make it more of a value. One thing would be to have it change to night colors according to the time of sunset. All in all I am very happy and do not regret sticking with the brand I have grown to love. For me, GPS nav units don't have to have every little bell and whistle, they are simply a useful addition to assist in driving, not a replacement for being aware and in control. Put away any fears that this won't work well without the cradle, it seems to do just fine. No, it doesn't depend on wireless or cell connection, the only thing will most likely be that updates and new maps will take a long time to download and install.
Works Great so far By: Bdrolet - 1-Oct-2009 Version: 1.0 Have only been using it for 3 days so far but I've used it every time I've driven somewhere and it has worked perfectly. It loads quickly and I haven't had any issues with getting a GPS signal.
I personally love the interface. It is extremely easy to use the menus and to follow directions, both spoken and on screen.
Two suggestions, both regarding music:
1. Fade the music out and back in when giving a direction, instead of abruptly stoping and restarting.. Maybe even keep it playing at a lower volume, like navigon. Not the biggest deal but it would flow better that way.
2. iPod controls from within the app. At this point music playing only works if you start it before opening tomtom. Double clicking the home button does give you the standard iPod controls, but only if music is already playing.
Ps. A note for striker_256, at first voice wasn't working on mine either- music would stop and I'd hear nothing, then music would return. I then realized that my silent switch was turned on. Maybe not your issue but thought I would mention it.
Switched from TomTom GO700 to TomTom on iPhone By: webervt - Nov 20, 2009 Version: 1.2 Had TomTom GO700 for years but the internal battery was shot within 18 months and it only worked when connected to the car power outlet. I was torn to get TomTom for the iPhone due to my previous reliability issue with GO700 but I must say that the iPhone app with the TomTom car kit works amazingly well and the transition from GO700 was flawless. Very fast satellite signal recognition (I live in rural Vermont, USA) and very quick redraw of alternate routes impress me. Bluetooth connection works well when making and receiving phone calls, however, the speaker or voice quality could be improved. I'm looking forward to future upgrades as I am sure that Google Navigation will make TomTom stay on their toes. Great buy!
