Second time around

I wrote a critical review yesterday, because this app (updated recently) became so very slow and usually crashed on the first attempt to open. (I have an original iPhone with the latest update.) Then, I thought I'd try one more thing. I uninstalled the app, downloaded it from iTunes again, synched it, turned off the iPhone and turned it on. Surprise! The app worked like it originally did. It's way faster. And, of course, it's always been easy to read and navigate, and I know AP has the latest news. So, as I promised in my earlier 1-star review, I'm giving this app 5 stars. It's great to have it working. It's my No. 1 news app again.

I thought it might be useful to offer precisely that, 'a first time user' opinion. I really don't understand some of the recent comments about it being "laggy" or having gone from "bad to worse" or this used to be a great app. until you guys "screwed it up". I find the current version 3.0 to be one of the more useful and relevant of iPhone applications to the point where I use it as my only source of news, mainly because of it's great ability to consolidate in a relative manner. All in all a superb app.

Let's clear two things up

First, most people do not want constant updates from the AP. They literally put out thousands of articles a day. Sending alerts all the time would be quite intrusive and even Apple has recommendations for using PUSH notifications limitedly because of this.
Second, this app has NO pop-up ads. Nothing pops up in front of the articles before you can read them. What it does have is small banner ads, just like most websites have, included with an article. The ad appears, at the top, after the story text and any picture loads.
This is a great app. The only thing people complaining are right about is that there is a video ad the plays before video reports. I don't care for this but I rarely watch the video clips.

This news app has a great save and e-mail option which is absent in other free apps. There are good sub sections on Weird, Tech and Travel which are of interest to anyone, anywhere. I love it as I quickly load up the full stories as the app can save them for days at a time, in the settings feature. This means that I can load up in minutes and have all the news I need. It has never failed in that regard unlike other news apps. Great for US residents abroad, American Studies students and fans of American Sports, as all of them and Soccer can be found within.

Intuitive, comprehensive and fast - a truly great way of accessing news. Sure, it's light on specifically UK coverage (what with it being an American company, duh) but - alongside the also great (albeit slower) NYT app - it provides a model of how to deliver news on a portable device. I use it every day, and the ability to save stories for later is a great feature.
There's no question this is now a very polished piece of software that does exactly what it sets out to, and does it well, so it's bizarre it's got such bad reviews... Will trashing AP or Apple or America in general encourage other companies to get developing? I doubt it. And if you're desperate for UK news, why not just turn on the television? Or the radio? Or walk to the corner store and get a newspaper? Getting hold of US news is much harder.
I would happily use an Guardian or Times app alongside this, or a BBC or ITN one, but, um... they haven't bothered to produce anything. At all. So maybe *they* deserve the criticism enshrined in so many of these reviews, rather than AP, who are supporting the iPhone platform in a way not a single UK news source has chosen to do. AP came to the market early with a great news app. Why not *praise* developers like this, in the hope of kicking UK publications or broadcasters to step up to the plate???

The update was good with the refresh button. It seems like a better app all together. One thing I noticed was everything was black. The toolbars and such. I like the style. What ruins it are the upmost toolbars. They are that standard iPhone gray-blue. Make it uniform (all black!). Make the "menubar" (where battery icon and time are located) black too! It's a great app, but the look of it can be fine tuned to make your app unique!

I work for the Media! I'll endorse it!

I work for the media and I sure as heck use it.
Pros:
1.) Clean interface.
2.) Nice constant flow of updates.
3.) AP is a generally trusted news source for me.
4.) Simple, precise, selectable genres. (Ex: I don't have to weed out entertainment news from economic news.)
Never really had a con yet... it crashed several times on one occasion, but like with all crashes - there was either an update ready for it or I reinstalled it and all was back to normal.
If you see a person in NY who seems to be staking out a location (with a camera crew) while intently staring at his iPhone... Well, that's probably me.

I never review apps but after reading some of the negative reviews I felt obliged to toss my 2 cents, as I am a long time user of this wonderful app. I failed to understand why there were so many bad reviews about current update failing? It worked pretty good on my phone. Also all of my colleagues did not face any issues either. Grow up guys and give some credit to these guys for providing such a wonderful app for free.

Great News App

I've wanted a news app for the iPod touch since the touch first released, so I'm glad to see a large amount of news apps. After trying most of them, I like this one the best. It is fairly organized, and uses the iPhone and iPod touch features well. I wish it could load more news, but I like how it downloads the news, so if I take my touch to somewhere without Internet, I can still look through the news.

I can't believe this app is free. I would have paid $5 for it.The CNN app should not be #1. It's not "iPhone-friendly". And what I mean by that for all you Tech ignorant people is that they use actual articles from the Internet instead of converting them to a mobile view without advertisements which make it very slow and they make you pay for the app. The CNN app is a snail compared to this AP app and if I could, I'd pour salt on it. More thought and effort was put into the AP app. Oh, one more thing. If you are complaining about this app being slow and crashy, then you must have a 'y iPhone.

I love it, can't still believe this app is free. Well THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS BRILLIANT APP. It's much better that Byline I bought initially for a lot of pounds and yet this free app is twice as useful. Before you buy, I would suggest you try this excellent news reader, I bet you will be impressed. Video news and everything on there, AMAZING AND A JOB WELL DONE HERE. THUMBS UP LADS. THANKS AGAIN.

I work with a Newspaper. The best seller section. ;) I have to admit, I use AP App. This version is amazingly fast. A difference of night and day from previous version. Being a tester myself, I understand the difference between AP news app and other apps. Our app, in comparison with AP app has less than half the number of news stories but AP App takes the same refresh time as our app. The feature I like the most is ability to customize news stories.
People, you don't get it, do you? haha! A news app is as good as its content. I am amazed at the sections AP team has been able to push on a mobile phone. Our product manager keeps on saying, "Only 10 stories", "Only 10 stories". "People don't care".
Hey by the way, you techies, leave real reviews for users. Go get a life and a girlfriend you jokers. Take it easy. LOL.
Being a tester on a news app, I read reviews often. I can tell you guys AP news app is by far the best and most customizable. Good job developers. Hope your testers are not running to you with memory leaks anymore if you know what I mean ;) Well done.

Take scissors, cut articles, paste them in a notebook and read it your way, cause I am sure you don't have the capability to write an app for sure. loser!

1 of the best free apps out there

I haven't had any of the problems many people claim they are having. It's pretty stable, and I've not had it crash on me, or work slow. I have a 3GS, so I'm not sure if its speed and new processor aid in the application working faster and more efficiently.Update: 07-09-09 @8:48AMStill pretty darn speedy on 3G, but is starting to crash if you change location in its settings. For the most part, still a great app, and push notification is why I put up with its imperfections. I would pay for an improved/premium version if bugs are fixed.
