Firstly to the 'special' people having trouble with this app not downloading.... Try looking in the info section and waiting till the 'downloading' progress bar has finished before you start complaining about the app not working. This app is great. Very well presented and does exactly what it is designed to do. Fantastic for reading news on the tube. Only suggestion would be to include an idiots guide so some of the more mentally challenged users can have the obvious stuff spoon fed to them. Thanks for a great, and much needed app.

I go on the tube for 2 hours every day with no 3G or wifi, so this is an amazing app for me to catch up on the news. You can even customise you're favourite topics (i.e. technology). and then you also get the full BBC web page story when you click on the headline, and all i had to do was go on it at home for a minute and it loaded all the stories. amazing thanks so much. highly reccomended for every one.

Best to download the news items via wi-fi and switch on "offline mode" when away from wi-fi - otherwise news items will update (via Edge, etc.) when the app is open but only headlines will download. It seems to me that the headline is what tells the app if the story is already on the phone. This means the full story will not download even when within wi-fi range because the headline is already present (and the app thinks the whole story is there too). Despite this, it's the best newsreading app, especially when travelling where there's no internet connection.

All those saying bad things about it not working or being slow can blame either their Internet connection or something being wrong with their iPod. Why? 'Cause this is superb! It's never stopped working, downloads quickly in the background (and I've a slow connection!) and is really easy to navigate. Don't look anywhere else, not only is BBC News the most impartial anyway, but this app is the best news reader available.

Nice app works well love the offline feature. It's free you can't go wrong Just wanted to add that after having this for a while now and having tried some of the other news apps I have upped my rating to 5 stars. Have not had any of the probs others report and its just great to pull out of your pocket anywhere and use no matter where you are or what or no connection is available. This application offers accurate information about current events. is not slow unless you have a bad connection or you are impatient. Consider this if you accuse this application of any faliure. If you think that this free application connects us with false or misleeding facts then state them plainly. I see people eager to critisicise others work: work that they themselves do not understand. Would you create then a better way for the information to move. Do you not find yourself without power and at Gods mercy. I have tested it and it and of what I have seen is nither slow nor is any of the information misleading or false. For example nigeria lost 200 people yesterday because of upheval. Any story that holds to the truth and persues it finds honor.

I see 2.5 as the average rating and looking at the reviews so far and doing the math I see 5 reviews with a total of 19 stars. That makes 3.8 in MY book. Can somebody correct this? Or is this intentional?!
I am using the app, and find it is the best news app, superior to NYTimes -- faster to load, the pages look like the real Web pages except you can zoom in faster. Offline functionality gives it an extra edge. It's up-to-date. All topics are covered. Quality news from an internationally recognized source. All I ever use, apart from Bloomberg, and the occasional update on technology @ NYTimes.

I don't understand why this app is rated so poorly- currently 2.5 stars. I have not seen any of the problems mentioned in other reviews. This app is free and lets you carry most of the BBC news site with you for offline viewing, after first synchronising. This app syncs rapidly over my WiFi connection all chosen news sections. You can monitor download progress using the Info tab. If you are later on a slow connection you can switch to offline mode to prevent a slow re-sync. The app is easy to use and free, so if you like BBC news stop complaining, you can now download most of it for offline viewing. The developers have done a good job here. There are further improvements that can, and no doubt will be made, but this is a good first release. Would like to see more sections on the front page, the ability to set a recurring sync time and ability to choose which sections should be synced. Thanks for the good work and keep the updates coming.

Love this app. I was using rss reader for the BBC news but that only gave me 2 lines or I had to be online to view the site. Downloading all news is brilliant as I can read it anywhere. A few things that I would love to see improved... 1) I know it's a tiny detail and really pedantic but I hate the icon... Could it not just be "BBC"? The red "news reader" bit looks amatuer. Excellent! My request was completed, much better logo now. Thanks very much, 5 stars. Don't know why some people aren't keen, I don't use it over 3g but it's great on a wifi connection 2) Picture slideshow is great! But please make it landscapeable! Do those 2 and this us easily 5 stars. I love the ability to change your three favourite areas of news to download btw.

I use this application on my Touch and it works perfectly, doing exactly what it promises - allowing me to read the BBC News website even when I am not in a wi-fi area. My only suggestion for improvement would be to allow for more than 3 favourites, but even then 3 gives me enough information to keep me happy.
This is the only downloaded application which I use regularly, which considering it is free is incredible - definitely recommend.

Fab app! I use it everyday (and I live in the Uk) I download the news before work, and then read at throughout the day when I get a free minute!! The only thing is make sure you give it enough time to download fully or some info will be Missing. I love the fact you don't have to have a wifi connection at all times to make use of this, but obviously you will need a wifi connection to initially download the news! One of the best free apps I've had !!

I sync it in the morning (just open the app and it starts automatically) and can then read the news on the way to work. All news stories can be clicked on to read the full story just as you would on the BBC website in Safari - but all offline. It works brilliantly and is fast too. Many thanks to the talented developers for providing this app free of charge.
Feature Request:
- Please add BBC Sports news!
- support for syncing the news in the background at a set time (e.g. in the morning) automatically without the need of opening the app

I've been looking for a BBC News app for ages & have been using this one for the last couple of weeks. I download all the content in the morning (over wifi at home) before I catch my train into London. I then read this on tube so it doesn't try to update or I place the iPhone into "flight mode". So would be good to have a function to turn off updating. I love how it captures all the web page as a download. Lack of pictures can be annoying at times but hey if I wanted pictures I'd read a comic book!!! Great application! Keep up the good work! Request - would it be possible to include content from other news agencies? Or perhaps in a different app?

This is a really handy app and has been well thought through and provides a very slick use of the iPod's features and interface. But ... unless I'm missing something, there's no way to stop it downloading what appears to be the entire BBC News site! I'm only interested in a few categories and I don't want to waste the time and storage downloading articles I'll never look at.
I've deleted BBCReader from my iPod for now. If the developers add preferences to allow me to select categories then I will definitely download and keep it and I'd rate it 5 stars.

Initially this app will download the rss feeds with summary articles and no proper images. Leave it for a while (or look at info) and it will fill in all the details for your selected 3 topics. This works very well over wifi, but is rather unusable over 3G since it takes too long. Potential Improvements would be to strip off the side columns from the webpage (or use the low graphics version designed for mobiles) and hopefully in the future to support some kind of automated syncing. But for free this is fantastic.

Been waiting for someone to make a BBC news app for ages! Downloading the stories for later use works well. Would prefer it if you could view the stories in a custom reader rather than in safari, as in the NY Times app. Also found it easier to reorder categories of news on the NY Times app. Always found it a bit annoying having to zoom in on the column of text on the BBC News site. Thanks for the effort you've put in, great work!

I use this app every day to catch up on news headlines. It's a great idea, and works most of the time. The previous version was OK, but unreliable; the new one, with the coloured icon, is much better, though it still crashes every so often. Scrolling the stories can be jerky, and I also find it irritating that the images next to the headlines are almost always squashed and distorted to fit into the square frame. I'll stick with it though, as it's a quick and convenient way to keep up to date.

Jan. 17 2009 I too have the Canada news app and love the fact that this saves the articles for offline viewing (though I haven't been offline yet). I just dl'd this app this morning. So far the stories are easy to read, and I like the BBC assortment. It has, however, crashed twice in 30 minutes. If the app remembered my last point then the crashing would honestly be forgiven. I trust these are going to be issues that are addressed in an update. Fantastic free news app that is only a little buggy for the moment. A great download overall.

I'm an avid BBC news reader, so I find this app brilliant. I've not encounted the synching issues others have mentioned, I've found it pretty quick at gathering all the information it wants off my wifi, them off I go, catching up on the news on the tube "underground", perfect. I have some minor gripes & suggestions for GUI, but that's not for posting here. Over all a great app with great future potential.

UPDATE: The developer finally released a fix that addresses the news update problem. I therefore happily change my rating to 4 stars. This is now one of the apps I use most.-----------------When I first started using this app last year, I liked the quick access to headlines, but disliked the fact that it would take forever to update to the current day/time. Instead, it would simply update the headlines that were current the last time the app was used.I was sure this obvious bug would quickly be fixed, but it's now nearly a year later and the problem remains. Indeed, no further development of the app appears to have been done.I think, therefore, it should be regarded as "abandonware". A pity. It had great potential.
