Description:

NetNewsWire is an RSS reader for iPhone — you can read news from the millions of weblogs and sites that publish RSS feeds.
Because NetNewsWire syncs with Google Reader (Google account required) — and with NetNewsWire for Macintosh and FeedDemon for Windows by NewsGator — if you read an item on your iPhone, you don’t have to read it again your Macintosh or other computer. It’s automatically marked as read everywhere.
You can star items or send them to Instapaper to save them for later. You can email articles or post links to Twitter to share with friends.
Going through your articles is easy: just tap the Next Unread button.
And if there are feeds you don’t want to read on your iPhone, you can hide them.
The premium version of NetNewsWire is ad-free.

Great update, happy to pay!  rating of NetNewsWire Premium
By: Geoff Pado - Sep 23, 2009
Version: 2.0
I'm *so* glad to have my NetNewsWire for iPhone back -- I've been using the Mac betas for a while, which no longer synced with NewsGator. It made using the iPhone app hard, since anything I read on the Mac would still be on the iPhone. But no more! This new NNW syncs with Google Reader as well!
If I had to find something to nitpick, I'm not a huge fan of the new icon. I like the icon for the Mac version and the old iPhone version, but this one's just meh. It's still a definite 5-star app, though. Love it!

I don't review much applications, I usually feel that the reviews on the store are very similar to my opinion. So I don't feel like I have much to offer. That is not the case with this application. At time of writing it has 24 reviews and a average rating of 3.5 stars and I'm afraid it might get worse. So I have to speak up and defend whats going on.-To new users-This is a very affordable google reader client with a desktop client also availiable for Windows and Mac. It's all free (with the exception of the premium verison here) and very fobust and feature rich. Google reader is the most popular online feed reader by far and has a ton of features.- to users of previous verisions -With the exception of a new engine nothing has changed. Google reader has all of the features of netnewswires online service and more. After it's all set up it's going to be a breeze to use. Google reader has a ton of clients on the desktop and a few on the iPhone (this one being the best and most affordable ad free one). I can see why some people are confused about the change but the developers felt it was a good idea for multiple reasons (I'm not here to speak for them so just check out their website) also if your a fan of their applications after the set up nothing will change, with the exception that you can now use google readers awesome web interface. As with all major overhauls this one might not have a bunch of features but im sure they are comming. This application has been MUCH more stable on my iPod touch then byline and much faster to load and start up.Not to mention they nailed the interface! It's easy on the eyes and very readable. (good work guys) the desktop clients ui has not changed but like they said 4.0 is being worked on and I'm sure that it will have a spectactular user interface.I'm very pleased with the application and love performance. To people having problems try restating after installing it. It might be a low memory on your iPhone or iPod touch.Great work guys! I love it's now my primary reader.

This is a great update to the application.
There are many excellent RSS readers for the iPhone now. NNW on the iPhone offers what it does on the Mac: a fast, elegant program with a practical, minimalist interface that avoids gimmicky features.
If you happen to like fiddling around with settings and lots of gee-whiz stuff, you should defnitely try out Newsstand. I'll be sticking with NewtNewsWire.

Pro's and Con's  rating of NetNewsWire Premium
By: Ilo V. - Nov 8, 2009
Version: 2.0.1
I have been a loyal NetNewsWire customer both on the iPhone and the desktop. The switch to Google Reader has been painless for me, perhaps because I avoided the NNWbeta software on the desktop. I've been using both NetNewsWire and Newsstand on the iPhone for a bit. They both seem to do the basics (syncing) well. Pro's and Con's of NetNewsWire so far when compared to Newsstand:
NetNewsWire Pro's:
- Shows the "Free" or "Paid" info at the bottom of Wall Street Journal feeds, letting me know if I can read the article without having to go to the site to load the whole page first. These don't show up in Newsstand at all, making WSJ feeds almost useless in Newsstand for me.
- Can view all "already read" articles for the entire feed group in one window, mixed in with unread artlcles of course. In Newsstand, the only way to view "already read" articles is to look at each individual feed by itself.
- Overall faster sync than Newsstand
NetNewsWire Con's:
- Simplistic and possibly boring interface, but finger targets are much bigger and easier to hit. This is really just a matter of taste, and many people might list this as a "pro" for NetNewsWire
- Have to open an article to star it (can't do it from the list)
- The button you press to star an article looks identical before and after. The only way to tell if you successfully starred an article is to scroll all the way back up to the top and look for a faint grey star in the header. Newsstand has an obvious change in the button to immediately tell you if you managed to hit it with your finger or not.
- No way to view only unread articles. This is mitigated by the fact that the "next unread" button is VERY fast, so you can just cycle through the unread artlcles by hitting it repeatedly.
After more than a month of use, I have come to prefer NetNewsWire far more than Newstand. The major issue is that Newsstand only syncs backward a limited amount, meaning older unread articles stay unread in Newsstand when they were flagged as read in Google Reader and everywhere else that syncs with it. The "cruft" builds up and you end up with hundreds of unread articles in Newsstand that were read via Google Reader. The only way to get rid of them is to either read them all in Newsstand, or read every other article in your feeds so you can hit "mark all as read" in Newsstand. This failure to sync properly, and the discovery that I could quickly read just unread articles by hitting the "next unread" button repeatedly, sealed the deal for me. Hopefully the minor interface niggles I mentioned above will be fixed in future updates.

Loving it, except...  rating of NetNewsWire Premium
By: causeimawesome - Sep 24, 2009

I love the app, but the 2 main problems I have are, first, the lack of an unread count badge on the icon on the home screen, that is a feature I loved in the last version that inexplicably disappeared in this version, second, is the fact that you can't decide how long read items are kept, I don't like having to sift through the read to find the unread, so basically if they had the new look and features with the old prefrence panel and badge count, this app would be PERFECT for me. Hopefully they won't ignore the problems this rendition of the app has and update based on the complaints here.

Decent RSS reader  rating of NetNewsWire Premium
By: Stevevol - Sep 23, 2009
Version: 2.0
The good - very nice layout changes from v1. Still a nice simple layout. The sync to Google reader is very quick. When you star an article on the phone it comes up quick on GR. The bad - The dropped support from NewsGator is lame. And after following instructions there was no importing of my NewsGator subscriptions to Google or the Mac version of NetNewsWire (and ultimately the phone). This just didnt work. You'd figure they'd have worked this out before bailing on us! I basically just resubscribed to all of my feeds within Google. Wish list - the ability to add feeds within the app would be nice. Posting to Facebook would be too.

Good start, buggy  rating of NetNewsWire Premium
By: Matt11 - Sep 25, 2009
Version: 2.0
I would like to be able to disable landscape mode so that I can read in bed.The unread count numbers are buggy. Sometimes a feed has many unread items but no unread count number appears on that feed header bar.The last 24 hours header bar unread count often shows a number for unread count even when there are none. A more useful replacement for this bar would be an "unread stories" bar since the last 24 hours is hard to filter out read items. Maybe a setting to turn off this bar would help with the scrolling bug and would free up real estate for people that don't want to use it.Scrolling also causes unread counts to fail to be accurate. If the feed bars on the main screen weren't so tall, the need for scrolling might be eliminated and thus this bug would be less common.

What's been read?  rating of NetNewsWire Premium

Long time fan--from day one. Okay, you guys need feedback and a quick update. Most importantly, better ghost out (or let us remove) what's already been read. Light blue for unread and black for read isn't good enough. There has to be no mistaking read from unread. I wouldn't even mind read articles not disappearing, if I could tell which they were. Also needs to support Google Reader's own built-in share feature (different from star). It adds shared items to an RSS feed that you can bring into FriendFeed for integrated social news sharing. Using Twitter, while cool, is syill not the same as a blurb with embedded photos. Also, Twitter sharing requires you to be online. Just support Google Reader's share feature that works offline then synchronizes like you used to. But kudos on the awesome email implementation. Been waiting for the article blurb in-email for a long time. Spares me tons of copy and paste and load and quits. Also, I've seen none of the reported crashes, and am very happy with the speed and offline performance. Four stars for an awesome version 3. It motivated me to pay for premium. Please keep polishing.

At last a faster syncing google reader  rating of NetNewsWire Premium
By: Ewiser - Sep 23, 2009

I had been waiting for this to come out as I use NNW on my Mac. I tried newstand an with over 1000 feeds it way too slow to be of any use as it took to long to view feeds. This update let me read the feeds with out locking up or crashing which newstands big problem. The bug I had was if viewing a web page when you went back to the feed the return to the main feed list button would be missing. Had to exit and restart to get the app working again. This happened with the last version. I am happy with the update an if the one bug can be fixed it would be 5 stars for me. I want speed and syncing back to the desktop.

Change of heart.  rating of NetNewsWire Premium
By: Rflr - Oct 8, 2009

I used v1 on my iPhone religiously - perhaps more than any single app. I loved the speed, the reliability, and the simple user interface. After downloading v2, I was initially very dissappointed. I hated the fact that the unread badge was missing. I hated the fact that the royal blue banner at the top was gone. I hated the fact that i'd have to switch over to google...Well, after actually using v2 for a few days I can safely say that I love it. I don't care about the badge thing anymore. I like google reader more now. And, I can deal with no royal blue banner. I really like the new category organization. I really like the speed and typography. Not a single crash or problem yet and I don't expect one. I do have my fingers crossed for the next minor or major update:- I need to be able to permanently disable screen rotation - I like to read lying down and the rotation makes me crazy. - I'd like to be able to turn off subtext so that all I see is feed entry titlesbin the main list page. This might help to reduce the clutter a bit. - I'd love it if read articles could be recolored to something lighter like light gray rather than just blank like they currently are. This would improve my ability to quickly spot unread entries. - I never use starred items so it would be nice if u could remove this entry from the top of the main screen list. Overall, I'm very happy after an initial rough start. Great job and I look forward to future updates.

Great app but buggy  rating of NetNewsWire Premium
By: Dan S - Oct 16, 2009
Version: 2.0
Paired with its Mac desktop sibling, and with Google Reader for sync and other people's computers, this is the best newsreading experience available.
I love this app, and far prefer it to Google Reader on the iPhone and to its previous version. But it crashes on me every few days (especially when I turn it off out-of-sync and in a detail feed or link view?). And I agree with the reviewer who asked for a way to turn off landscape rotation.
I'll keep using it, and hope Brent gets an update out soon that fixes my bugs.

Excelent! I'm missing the "share on google reader functionality" though.  rating of NetNewsWire Premium
By: Ognen - Oct 17, 2009
Version: 2.0.1
Excellent! I've been using the mobile version of google reader for 2 years. Tried other iPhone readers that synced with google reader but always went back to google reader for one reason or the other (usually they took too much time to get up to date).
NetNewsWire does a very good job at keeping articles offline as well as quickly updating feeds. It seems to be smart enough to update the feeds I read the most first.
However, I did use the "share" and "whare with comment" functionalities a lot with the online version of google reader to communicate with friends and co-workers the articles that were interesting. I'm missing that here. I know I can use twitter much in the same manner but we've already built a small community using the share feature and its a shame not to have it in NetNewsWire.

Please please add a read first unread item on the main page so I don't have to navigate into a feed to get my first news item. Also the folders and feeds in the feed folder list sometimes dissapear and sometimes don't when all items in a feed/folder are read, can we have an option to always show feeds and folders even when they have a unread count of 0Looking forward to more releases because the last version was not updated often enough.Polish the app up an I will give it 5 stars.

Still the best RSS app in the store, working really well with Mac app to ensure you don't read items twice. I don't buy many iPhone apps, but this one is worth it.
On the UI side could we have the thin separating lines back in tableview's where appropraite - much easier on the eye when you have many items to scroll though. I don't miss the unread badge, like others.
Note: the ad free Mac version is worth the small amount it costs too.

Having used V1 religiously for about a year I eventual flirted with out RSS readers due to a lack of updates and increasing unreliability. Having eagerly downloaded V2 I was initially a bit disappointed but having used it for a day or so it is becoming increasingly obvious that a lot of work has been done under the hood and despite some seemingly glaring feature ommisions I am starting to the logic to the developers approach. It provides a far better user experience than the 7 or 8 similar apps I own. There are bugs and there is a need for a bit more customobility but I am growing to love this new version. I just hope it will be regularly maintained and updated - unlike V1!

iphone version + mac version  rating of NetNewsWire Premium
By: deejack - 24-Sep-2009
Version: 2.0
I have also been waiting for this to come, and here it is. A good app, but like some of the other reviewers have mentioned, a number of things would make this a great app:
1) badge to show unread count
2) (not sure if this is a mac version or iphone thing) but to have starred items to show as starred in the mac version - Greader allows for starring can this not be picked up in the mac version?
3) interface customisations - on the main page it is difficult to differentiate between the feeds, possibly include alternate feed background colouring or sectioning. Also font size changing, possibly even include the style sheet customisation as you get in the mac version
4) I can't work out why the favicon for some feeds doesn't display, even when a feed definitely has one? e.g. Daily Dilbert Strip
There will probably be more after further use, but liking it very much. Good work.
Update to point 2 above, starred items on the iPhone version are flagged items in the Mac version.

I guess with the changes to Newsgator it had to change, but I really did like the layout & way it processed feeds as you viewed them. I'm currently not able to use the app as it constantly bails out on launch - I'm wondering if this might be caused my the number of feeds subscribed to (but hoping not). Restarting doesn't seem to fix this problem although removing & reinstalling does provide a temporary but less-than-ideal solution.

My favourite app of all time (so far)  rating of NetNewsWire Premium
By: escottf - 27-Sep-2009
Version: 2.0
NetNewsWire is my most used app on my iPhone (by miles) - I'm actually glad to now be able to pay for it!
When Newsgator announced the end of their news aggregate service at such short notice (in app store approval time-span) I looked for some alternatives and even paid for them. They looked nice, synced to Google Reader but basically, were tediously slow. So I went back to NNW and hoped the new one came out properly.
The new one is still great - and fast - great for checking the news how I do, on breaks, at bus stops, walking around. Nice and *fast*.
The new version does seem rushed though - it has many bugs (notably reluctant unread counts and folders that don't collapse after viewing web pages) and it could do with the simplicity (or the option of simplicity) that V1 had. I do miss the declining unread counts when reading feeds and the unread "badge" too.
Tips for this version: make sure you're up-to-date with your stories in Google Reader before installing (otherwise it spends years downloading them all and seems crashed); if you have an "unread badge" on the app icon - this doesn't work in V2 so reinstall (delete in iPhone and resync from iTunes) to get it "blanked"; if you suffer from crashing at start-up, reinstall too.
Looking forward to v2.1!

Syncing worked wonderfully. This is a good companion to NetNewsWire on my Mac.  rating of NetNewsWire Premium
By: Douglas7 - 27-Sep-2009
Version: 2.0
When I first opened NetNewsWire 3.2 for Mac, it migrated all my feeds into my Google account. NetNewsWire 2.0 for iPhone then sucessfully joined in with the syncing. This is all working perfectly. I haven't had to log in to Google Reader from a web browser at all, which is lovely. The core of the application is solid: it is a decent way to read feeds from the iPhone and have feed subscriptions and read status kept in sync with NetNewsWire on my Mac.
Onto the finer points that I am not quite satisfied with:
I dislike all the previews: previews of article headings in the list of subscriptions and previews of article contents in the list of article headings. The app presents a hierarchy that shows bits of the level below. This contributes to making the interface cluttered. (I'd prefer either one clean list at a time, with no previews or NNW Mac's combined view, which shows the full article contents.)
Another thing adding clutter is news items that I've already read: I would love it if read items could be hidden straight away, then I'd know I could read anything on the screen and it would be fresh news.
Despite these complaints, I love the NetNewsWire platform. It is a superb way to read news feeds and this app is very reasonably priced — I'd say it is worth more than they charge.
