Reviews:
Great app By: Calvinandhobbes_uk - 31-Dec-2009 Version: 1.01 Really handy and useful. I don't understand the constant desire for breaking news, do you really have to be kept up to date with everything ALL the time? You must have far too much spare time on your hands! The only suggestion for improvement would be to somehow speed up downloading offline content and to make the progress of downloading clearer. Took me over and hour via Wifi which is too long if you're on the go.
Tops By: WinkyWankyWoes - 31-Dec-2009 Version: 1.01 This is the best news app of the lot - by a long, long way. Even if you're not a Grauniad fan, it has to be worth the money for the range depth and clarity of news it delivers and the way it lets you drill down through content. It can also be personalised to your own news needs and wants in some detail. The Murdock empire would be well advised to stop whingeing about the web and emulate this one - it is class leading.WELL WORTH THE MONEY
Guardian continues to show printed news how its should be done. By: Xopa - 15-Dec-2009 Version: 1.0 The Guardian continues to be at the forefront of the traditional print papers trying to make their voice heard online.Firstly they made complete articles freely accessible using RSS and now the likes of this fantastically well made and useful app. The UI is well presented, the application has 'yet' to crash after strenuous usage and the content available is brilliant, an excellent first version. Weighing in at a great price, £2.39 is less than 3 days of the print equivalent. It's impressive to see the Guardian site, it's feeds and now this application (still) advert free and how they continue to do this is unknown to me. With that said I would happily see unintrusive adverts embedded in this application to ensure the excellent continued work and innovations of this paper.
Fab By: ICB00 - 14-Dec-2009 Version: 1.0 This is so good! Finally the iPhone has a good app for a really good newspaper! Can of cause still be improved, as with copy and paste. My real concern, however, is how Guardian is going to make money in the future. This app adds to the question, it is nearly for free and such an offer will probably not last forever. I'd rather pay than have advertising. And please don't add readers comments to articles as one suggested. It's nice to avoid them.
FANTASTIC By: rafedwards - 25-Dec-2009 Version: 1.0 This is a well designed app that allowsusers acces to many varied content given by The Guardian. The interface can seem complicating on first use but is very useful in getting you around recent and past content. The flexibility of the native app means things like font size, offline reading and direct content access give iPhone and iPod Touch screens praticality, ease and style.Perhaps the layout could be cleaned here and there so that some things load faster, others accessed more quickly and landscape reading were possible, but honestly that's just busywork to make an outstandig app that much better.
Love it, kind of. By: Stuart DJ - 25-Dec-2009 Version: 1.01 This app is everything that one would expect from The Guardian. Stylish and easy to use. Worth the money (and better than handing cash to Murdoch let's be honest). However, it crashes with monotonous regularity particularly when loading offline stories. Also fails to cope with phone going to sleep. Let's hope GMG have an improved version around the corner.UPDATE: This app has been updated. It is now perfect. Thank you The Guardian.
Beautifully done By: Matt Lee B - 14-Dec-2009 Version: 1.0 I had long wondered why the Guardian hadn't released an iPhone app, and now I can see why. I've tried the efforts from The Independent and Telegraph, and they were very poor, so much so that I removed the apps. Not so with the Guardian app. It's evidently been thoughtfully designed and implemented and, to top it all, it carries some of the best UK journalism on offer! A beautiful and thoroughly engaging app. Well done!
Perfect! By: MTFox - 23-Dec-2009 Version: 1.0 It is almost unbelievable just how much better this is than all the other news(paper) apps. In fact, with the tag feature (that lets you easily navigate to related articles) and the search and trending functions, it's almost better than the printed Guardian. Obviously, some real love and care - and thinking - went into the design of this beautifully executed example of how all intelligent applications should be.
Great effort By: Sparklemarkle - 14-Dec-2009 Version: 1.0 It would have been nice to see Twitter integration as well as Facebook, nut this is a pretty slick app. It has replaced the web site shortcut on my home screen if only because of the customisation options. Hoefully the ability to leave comments will be added soon... And access to the crosswords!I'm sort of pleased the app wasn't free. The price is entirely reasonable for content from the best newspaper available, and is a far better idea than subscription models touted elsewhere... And preferable to having to navigate through countless adverts. For a first release, this is very impressive and I'm sure tweaks and improvements will be forthcoming over time. Nice work!
Quality reporting and content By: O.A - 30-Dec-2009 Version: 1.01 The best feature of the app is how highly customisable it is.- The ability to choose up to 6 sections for the home page as well as customise the amount of stories shown (up to 6) makes it relevant to your interests (which is important because it is a UK paper)- The whole package makes it easy to follow content; just like the website, it allows you to further explore keywords related to the topic- Easy linkup with their podcast section *NB requires wifiAlthough other newspapers have and will follow the trend of interactive news apps, the quality of Guardian reporting should easily hold it above the rest.Check m.guardian.co.uk for a taste of their style

Love it! By: DanFoBo - 21-Dec-2009 Version: 1.0 It does everything and more that I'd expect from the UK's finest paper. To those who moan we had to pay for it: I'm glad I did, I want them to take some of my £, I feel it's the least I can do! Only two things I'd change: add comments, and sideways view. But without both it's not the end of the world, and hey, that's all part of the fun of getting updates!Really, excellent work guardian. Once again you've pissed all over the competition and shown them whose boss. Print, web and iPhone. Can we have a news channel next please?!EDIT: one other tweak that would excite the masses (if the masses are sad like me) when you open the app, it makes that lovely sound that you get at the start of video content on the guardian site!
Brilliant work By: Albertsq - 18-Dec-2009 Version: 1.0 Great stuff. The offline mode is particularly nice, and I love the galleries.Looking forward to the forthcoming Twitter integration. Better article markup and hyperlinking is surely also on the way. I can take or leave the comments, but I don't see the point of including the Comment Is Free section without them…Oh, nearly forgot the glaring omissions: Steve Bell, and (more challenging) the Cryptic Crossword. Or is this to ensure I keep buying the paper?
The Guardian By: Gus Mac - 17-Dec-2009 Version: 1.0 Hooray! Personalisation feature means I've got my Guardian back. Now I can filter out the cloacal torrent of lifestyle shite & Blatcherite propaganda that a couple of years ago drove me away from the print edition. I'm once again, to my amazement, a fan.Accessibility, apart from a wealth of content (preferences, again, make it easier to dish up content from months back) makes this for me the web's best - and best-value by far - source of news & comment. The paper's website, which I've frequented little of late, could pick up a lesson or three.Grab now before the price jumps; and before an increasingly desperate Digger forces the Guardian to fall in with with his putative/imperial pricing plot.
So much more than others By: BrittOmnRex - Dec 22, 2009 Version: 1.0 I was hesitant to part with $3.99 for what I feared was just another overpriced news app. However, this one is worth every penny. The ability to customize my news is almost endless. Every article has a set of categories, and each of those categories can be viewed separately or saved as a new "section." This allows me to follow the news I really want, not just what is currently the top news. I am very pleased with this app.
Quality News App By: transit-byzantium - Dec 14, 2009 Version: 1.0 This is the news app I've been waiting for as long as I've had an iPhone! So happy to finally see The Guardian available in the app store! The price may seem a bit steep at $3.99. But for ad-free content it is worth it. I pay about $3.99 for just one daily print edition of The Guadian here in the US. So the price is totally justifiable to me.Excellent news coverage, incredible photo galleries, easy user interface. All around exceptional news app. Right up there with NY Times.Yes, you can read The Guardian for free by using their mobile Internet site. But this app really does offer so much more. Well worth the price.
Best app I've bought in a while. By: Hamishcs - 16-Dec-2009 Version: 1.0 This app works. The app quickly updates each time it's opened and the sections are easy to navigate between.I found the favourite tool really useful as you can use it for one article or all articles by a certain writer. I love the way the Guardian is written anyway, it's certainly the best paper out there and this a cheap and easy way to read it's daily news without buying the paper itself.A twitter button would be a good addition, and perhaps copy and paste...but I think it's fine how it is right now, if it got an update then that's even better. :)
Really love the app. By: kefa - 06-Jan-2010 Version: 1.01 Provides a great look and feel (far better than the web) and access to content offline (eg. great for the tube). Couple of thoughts:- startup time could be speeded up to reduce the time the guardian splash screen is displayed- a few formatting errors and typos creeping in. Not sure whether this is a result of the app or a new editing process. Haven't noticed this on the website previously.- there are no adverts! While this is great from a user perspective, I'm assuming this is just for the app's initial honeymoon period. When are ads/subscription due?- offline content settings could be saved and more easily accessible making it easier to refresh offline contentMinor niggles for what has to be my favourite iPhone app. Even has a permanent slot on the dock now for easy access!
Very good news application By: Rob008 - 03-Jan-2010 Version: 1.01 This is a very good news application as it allows you to fully customise what stories you want to read. The app gives you access to fantastic articles from well known columnists on a subject that you can search for. It is essentially the Guardian newspaper on you iPhone plus more. The downloadable offline content is a great idea for people on the move and allows you to choose what you want, saving space for unwanted articles. Well worth £2.39! Yes you can get other news apps free, but you can really tell that this app has had more effort and money invested in it than others. Sky News really cannot compete, this is top of the league!
Is it worth it? By: neilboyd - 14-Dec-2009 Version: 1.0 It's early days to judge the app but initially everything works very smoothly. Not wild about the garish coloured section headers on the iPhone. The photo Gallery section works better than on the website. The content is more rich than from an RSS feed. You cannot copy text, nor tweet about articles from the app although you can email links to article pages. For just over the price of TheObserver, I'm willing to give it a try.
No article comments? By: The Phazer - 13-Dec-2009 Version: 1.0 Nice app for navigation, but really the lack of article comments or commenting really reduces it's utility - factual corrections by commentators are the only reason for reading Comment is Free as it is.Also on a quick UI note - I'm going to offline sync my phone at least once every day. I'll probably never use the settings box on the front page again after the first time. So why is the sync button hidden right at the bottom and the settings box at the top?
