Great idea  rating of Darkroom (formerly Steadycam)
By: Dude w/ an iPhone - Dec 8, 2008
Version: 2.2
It's a great idea to stabilize the camera using built-in accelerometer. However, due to inherent limitations of iPhone's camera, I'd consider SteadyCam more like a cool concept and another geek toy rather than serious photography tool. Usually it's not that hard to hold the phone steady using both hands to take a picture without noticeable blurring, unless you're shooting in such dark environment where most of the details won't be visible anyway due to noise and insufficient light. Also the app seems to capture the photo when the acceleration is zero, not speed: if you try panning the phone at constant speed, it thinks the camera is steady and takes a consistently blurry picture.
But otherwise the application does what it says and (as of now) it's free. I hope future versions will improve the sensing algorithm and bring other much needed functionality, such as camera roll viewing.

Great app!  rating of Darkroom (formerly Steadycam)
By: sriel - Oct 2, 2009

This is a great app. It has completely replaced the iPhone camera app. My pictures are clearer and sharper. Even pictures I take when in a moving car are clearer. I am aware the longer wait for saving is Apple's fault not the app or the dev's so it is not an issue as far as this review is concerned. Speaking of Apple, the recent update problem was Apple's fault not the dev's so I can't fault them for that in this review either. I have not bought the premium version yet only because I have no need yet for some of the premium only features, but I think I will soon anyway to support the devs and app. Update: To Apple- Wtf? Why haven't you people approved this app?! It is better than your camera app and I want my CHOICE! To all who has been giving this low ratings- Wake up you f* retards! The problem is not the app or the devs. It is Apple refusing to approve the 3.0 compatible version. It is obvious they are afraid of better competition. Update Oct 2, 2009: Finally back!!! I'm glad to see the retards at Apple's approval department finally got smart enough for a brief moment and passed this through instead of another stupid fart sound app.

Works exactly as described  rating of Darkroom (formerly Steadycam)

I have to admin I was skeptical. However it works better that I would have thought possible. It is limited only by the 2 megapixel camera on the phone. No more blury pictures. Ever. I would pay $0.49 for this app. But I don't think that's an option when posting an app. If I paid $0.99 I would have to using the camera on the phone everyday. Which I don't. This app has now replaced the camera app on my springboard.

Steady cam  rating of Darkroom (formerly Steadycam)

The only problem with this program is that it does not over wright the default cam app when installed. Learn a lesson from this app apple. For those saying they had to do a hard reset after installing because of a crash. Well, I feel bad for you because you are missing out on one of the best Cam apps there is. If only you knew YOU SHOULD RESET AFTER ANY INSTALLATION! I have every cam app there is. This is now my default cam app. It does exactly what it says. I wish I could show off some photos that I got from it. Great for Christmas lights in low lights!

Must have!  rating of Darkroom (formerly Steadycam)
By: GregD33 - Jun 27, 2009
Version: 2.2
It works amazingly well. I've taken really great shots of my daughter and zero blurry pics thanks to this apps ability to hood off until camera or subject are stable enough to avoid a blurry photo. Great app! Please, Apple, use your head and allow the 3.0 version to be certified. They aren't doing anything against the rules! Without this type of app, the camera is much closer to being worthless.

Now this Is clever!!!  rating of Darkroom (formerly Steadycam)
By: rmau - 16-Dec-2008

This is not a duplicate of Night Camera!! It answers a same question in a different way by using the iPhone's accelarometre to only take the pic when the camera is steady. Apart from being a little basic apart from the steady cam features, it's damned good for free. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ What a brilliant idea. It answer a problem for low light shots that plagues even expensive digital cameras. First class thinking!! A simple solution!!

Inventive use of accelerometer prevents dreaded "Tap Shake"  rating of Darkroom (formerly Steadycam)
By: striatic - Feb 3, 2009
Version: 2.1
Due to the long, slender shape and low weight of the iPhone, often when you tap the the default camera app's shutter button it will cause the iPhone to rock or shake in your hand, causing camera blur in low light situations.
You can learn tricks to avoid this, like holding and then gently releasing the shutter button instead of using a "tap", and by bracing the iPhone in two hands... or you can just use this app.
While SteadyCam isn't really capable of making clearer shots than are possible with careful bracing and tapping techniques, it does help you take these clear shots more consistently, and is especially effective when you're trying to shoot one-handed.

Takes great pictures 100% of the time  rating of Darkroom (formerly Steadycam)
By: ChrisWiebelt - Jan 9, 2009
Version: 2.2
This app is great for taking pictures that would normally be blurry due to the native iPhone camera's slow shutter speed and shakey hands. If you are trying to take a quick picture where you cannot wait on the motion sensor to stabilize then this app might not be the beat for those spur of the moment pictures. The only improvements I can suggest are: 1- a faster save process; 2- an option to send the new picture to email or other photosharing apps or websites (facebook, photobucket, IM software, etc. But this may not be possible due to the iphone's lack of cross app communication and copy/paste functions) 3- pictures should have the option to keep and display the direction in which the picture was taken (landscape pictures should be displayed as taken and not rotates to be displayed as portrait) Other than that, this app gives the iPhone camera a severe boost in the quality of the pictures taken.

what a difference  rating of Darkroom (formerly Steadycam)
By: gmurray618 - Dec 28, 2008
Version: 2.0
took some picts when i first got the iphone - blurry, junk. steadycam did not take the picture until the camrea was, well, stedy. nice crisp shots. I found that i can press the shutter and as long as i keep the camera movig can fram the shot. nice twist on taking pictures. i would like a link to photo book and what is the "steadyness" seating on the free one compared to the adjustable preium?
this is only camera (on my phone) i use now.

Very good app.  rating of Darkroom (formerly Steadycam)
By: ckapler - 8-Jan-2009
Version: 2.1
A little progress bar is at the bottom of the app when taking a picture and when you've held the phone steady for long enough it takes it. The problem with taking night pictures is that no matter how steady your hand is, it is hard to compensate for the increased pressure from pressing the button. This app allows someone with a steady hand to take great pictures with no or little backround light. Works great for me.

now works on 3g running 3.0  rating of Darkroom (formerly Steadycam)
By: Webclient - 08-Oct-2009
Version: 2.3
finally it works with 3.0, have waited a long time for this. it takes noticeably sharper photos than the stock app. cameras on phones need only be good enough for 'photo notes/reminders' or MMS but many people expect the same results as you would get from a proper camera, they are so deluded, there will never be a camera phone that can ever replace a proper camera or take a picture good enough for a 6x4 print! the iphone 3g camera together with this app does the job nicely. if i wanted to take photos of a day out i have a fuji f20 for that, darkroom is what the stock app should have been from the beginning.....

Great  rating of Darkroom (formerly Steadycam)
By: emile_epiphone92 - 8-Jan-2009
Version: 2.1
Well, it doesn't really "upgrade" the quality of the photos taken by the iPhone, but it's normal as the quality is limited to the camera quality. What's great is that since there's a delay between the time when the button is pressed and the time when the photo is taken makes it easier to get steady. Photos taken on the iPhone camera will always be a little more blurry than those taken by this application because even if we want it or not, it's obvious that the iPhone will move and blur the picture taken if it is taken at the same time as the button is pressed. So, this application is great for that, and, for what I tried since now, I've really been satisfied. ^^

Darkroom review  rating of Darkroom (formerly Steadycam)
By: Herohirst - 03-Oct-2009
Version: 2.3
First got this and LOVED it. Then when I got OS3 for my phone, it stopped working! All the negative reviews here seem to relate to this period. I was delighted when it finally popped up in the updates window as it is now working again just as it did before. And that's just it - works every time. When light is low you WILL get a sharp picture. So glad it's back again; I use it every day. Would give it 6 stars if I could.

Greatly improved  rating of Darkroom (formerly Steadycam)
By: Gamewatcher - Dec 21, 2008
Version: 2.0
I downloaded this mainly in an effort to improve night photography but was frustrated by the long delays during saving and the inability to preview results. The latest update corrects this by offering the choice to discard or save each picture. (If you prefer autosave, there is a setting to turn it back on.) You can also navigate to your photo roll without leaving the app. Nab this one while it is still free.

Excellent  rating of Darkroom (formerly Steadycam)
By: Lumd - 30-Dec-2008
Version: 2.0
I downloaded this app after reading the reviews as I wanted to see how well it worked. The camera roll and autosave options had been added before i downloaded it, so I have not experienced any problems. As I have read in some other reviews landscape is not registered, which is a shame, but the app still works brilliantly. In all honesty I can't complain as it was free for this version, and works as promised, so I am very happy. Thanks, it's just what I needed!

Better than the Vanilla Camera  rating of Darkroom (formerly Steadycam)
By: OrsonX - 07-Dec-2008
Version: 1.0
Here's how good it is - I took a picture in twighlight of houses silhouetted with a starry sky background.... the picture was super crisp and every star was a pinpoint of light! And that was just holding the phone in my hand, I was amazed! I dont think many compact cameras can achieve this result?
I wonder how it works? Does it use the accelerometer or pixel tracking?
This app puts the regular Apple vanilla camera app to shame, I will now use this app for all my photos.
[not checked yet if the EXIF info is attached, hope so.....]

Great APP  rating of Darkroom (formerly Steadycam)
By: deadstroke - Dec 9, 2008
Version: 1.0
This is a really great app. I just realized today that the regular camera on the phone is really bad, its way too blurry when I try to take a pic and is sensitive to even the slightest movements. This app works great and has now officially replaced the mediocre standard iphone camera. It waits until the camera is stable before it takes the picture. Self pics look clear and crisp. For all the people that are complaining that they have no idea where their pictures are here is a tip: check in your photo album under camera roll, its just that simple. Thanks for this really great app developers. They just have to update it to have "modes" instead of the steady picture mode but its a great start.

Does one thing, and does it well.  rating of Darkroom (formerly Steadycam)
By: SgnDave - Dec 6, 2008
Version: 1.0
This app delivers exactly what it promises. While the iPhone camera is great, its shutter speed, especially in low light, is very slow and can cause a photo to come out blurry. This app helps by only taking the photo when it is still.
This app seems to work by calculating the "blurriness" of the photo automatically. When the app is opened, it displays a live preview of the camera similar to the built-in camera app. At the bottom of the screen is a button to take the picture. When you hit the button, it starts a timer bar. When the timer bar is full (after maybe a second), the photo is taken. When the camera is moved and the photo is blurry, it resets. In essence, the app waits until the camera has been steady for a short time and then takes the picture.
The only downsides are (1) it cannot open the album (which App Store apps cannot do, period) and (2) there is no on-screen indication of whether the photo will be taken in portrait or landscape, although it will show up correctly in the album.
Bottom line: it does one thing, it does it well, and it will improve your pictures.

Better photos on average, but.....  rating of Darkroom (formerly Steadycam)
By: curnips - 13-Feb-2009
Version: 2.1
Definitely helps to get a better picture by ensuring the camera is steady before shooting. So on average you will get better pictures. Biggest issues is a minor, but annoying, one - specifically, the majority of the EXIF data is stripped/missing from the image, compared to one taken with the standard camera app. Stuff that's missing:
Make
Model
ResolutionUnit
DateTime
GPSInfoOffset
FNumber
DateTimeOriginal
DateTimeDigitized
Unknown (A500)5,1
GPS Informtion
GPSLatitudeRef
GPSLatitude
GPSLongitudeRef
GPSLongitude
GPSTimeStamp
In other words, not only don't you have the GPS location info other reviewers have noted, you also don't have the camera used (iPhone), F stop used, or even when it was taken. Personally I'm willing to accept better quality photos versus losing this info, but it is a shame that the hardware isn't being better used. Hopefully this will be adressed in future releases....

Far superior of the Apple camera app, but more work needs to be done.  rating of Darkroom (formerly Steadycam)
By: Lakeyboy - 18-Dec-2008
Version: 2.0
This app works great! No more blurry shots even when I think the camera is steady. Improvements I suggest include a better more professional looking icon, the ability to zoom and flick between photos on the camera roll (making the camera roll in this app identical to the apple camera roll functions), a larger shutter button and the recording of GPS co-ordinates to the EXIF data of each photo. Thanks and keep up the fantastic work.
