iPhone Impressionism By: 6effrey - Aug 11, 2009 Version: 1.02 OilCanvas has most painterly way to manipulate graphics of any iPhone app I've seen. Making a painting from an image or camera photo takes more creative input than applying a one-click filter. If you follow the suggestion of using the brushes in order of largest to smallest, you'll get great results. The smaller brushes can still "read" the image underneath the broad strokes of the big brushes. I've found it works well to cover the entire image with brushstrokes from each one as I go, until l get to the smallest two brushes, which I apply more selectively. I'm sure there are countless other ways to create unique images with OilCanvas. Like the first three apps from Big Canvas, the interface is simple, powerful and stable.I do agree something should be done about the auto-hiding bar at the top - no big deal, though. Very highly recommended.
LOVE this app!!!!!!!!!!! ***** By: LA Artist - May 11, 2009 Version: 1.02 I really love this app. I am a photographer and artist and love that this app quickly combines the 2. It is SUPER EASY to use, and you can create amazing looking art from your photos as you are waiting for your dinner to heat up in the microwave - it is that fast & easy! Then you can save it, email it... work on it some more. Love it. It does freeze up after I've been doing it for a while - but I just close the app and reopen and it seems to work fine... AND it is FREE! :)

Amazing and addicting! By: Weezbears - Mar 13, 2009 Version: 1.01 This is one of the most amazing apps I've ever seen. Practice makes perfect and you'll be astounded by the results you get from your favorite photos. I've found it best to "trace" the outlines of the images of my photos with a super fine brush, then fill in the larger areas with the larger brushes. Then you blend, blend, blend ...and blend some more with the small, medium and large brushes until you are satisfied. It took me about 5-7 attempts before I started getting comfortable with the brushes, but every photo gets better and better and I'm getting braver (and better) at attempting some photos with some very complicated details. My Dad called to tell me that he's amazed that I'm such a good artist. I had to explain that I had a TON of help from the geniuses that developed this app. Kudos to you and thank you for giving me the ability to "paint" like a pro. This app is beautiful! I'm amazed this is free!!!
OMG this is AWESOME By: MsChuLa - Mar 9, 2009 Version: 1.01 at first I didnt really get it, Im not much of artistic person but then i went and did some other pictures and duuude its SO much fun, be warned tho, you gotta have patience and time for this. especially when using the xs stroke for details but it comes out looking freakin tyte! and you can view others 'art' and comment them and add to your favorites! this is my new favorite app for sure
Awesome By: susanellen.xox - Feb 15, 2009 Version: 1.00 I love this app. I've made some amazing pictures with it. It takes some time, but it's worth it. Your best bet is to use two fingers, and start off with the medium brush. Cover the whole pic with the medium sized brush, then cover some slightly detailed areas with the small ( like for clothes, or defining certain colors or shades of a color, like a gradient ) , then use the xtra small for delicate areas, like eyes.
WAY under rated! By: King Taco 69 - Feb 8, 2009 Version: 1.00 I have made some very cool painting-like images with this app. The key is to spend some time making the image. You can scribble an image out in as few as a couple minutes but to get the best results some time should be taken. I have made some VERY cool images of sports and family and printed them out to be framed and with a standard 8.5 x 11 it has good resolution with no pixelation. Don't mind the negative reviews. They are probably from idiots and teen rejects who don't have the aptitude to spend more than a few minutes playing with themselves, let alone trying to utilize an app that requires a little patience. I highly recommend this app if you enjoy image editing on your iPod/iPhone

Ahmazing App! By: xJoanne - Jan 10, 2009 Version: 1.00 EDIT:
Okay, I read the description about how to use this, and I tried doing it for three of my pics and it came out nice. THANKS SO MUCH! I spent about 30 min on a picture of me and my friend.
Tip;
Big brushes = less detail
Small brushes = good details, more time
And I was wondering if you could put an undo button? I don't think it has one. And also, a button that would hide the toolbar would be great because it's hard to 'paint' the top parts because the toolbar keeps getting in the way. Thanks!

I'm glad I found this app while it's still free. This is pretty confusing, but I'm gonna try & learn how to use it. :]
Very fun to use By: DavyddS - Dec 29, 2008 Version: 1.00 This app can be addictive and unlike just applying a filter to get the oil paint effect you can create different effects depending on your technique. It helps to start with a good photo that does not have too many solid shadow colors or large highlights. There are some things that could be improved. One it would be nice to have a toggle so you can compare to the original photo as a reminder to get a better idea of where you want to go with the effects. Secondly, when you return to the app after an interruption it should default back to the last tool size you were using. I ruined one picture that was nearly finished because the tool reverted to XL and I discovered no matter how hard you work at it you cannot get back to the result you had. Nevertheless, since it is a free app, is fun, productive and commands your attention I am giving it 5 stars.
Good App!!! By: ArmorOfGod - Nov 27, 2008 Version: 1.00 I like this app a lot. It takes some time and using the hints upon first downloading it was very helpful. Start out using the largest brush then layer the picture with the smaller brushes. It takes me about 15-20 of work to get a picture I like, but it's worth it! I think this is a great app because it's not like a filter that you use to get a cookie cutter result, you MAKE the finished product! Very good user interface and idea. For a free app this is one of the best!!!
Fun. By: gotboy - Nov 27, 2008 Version: 1.00 I spend half day at home playing with this apps. So much much and will keep it for a while on my phone. ONLY ONE thing that bugs me is everytime when you paint on the canvas, the menu bar on top will disappear and return when you remove your finger from the screen. So, if I paint fast with my finger, it created a flashing effect and after a while, my eyes getting hurt and tired. At one point, I have to cover up that part of the screen. Would be nice it get fix in the future. Oh, how about rotate import pictures function? Otherwise, love this apps and thanks for making it fir FREE. I will keep my eyes on all your products :)
Great app! By: Muffin365 - Jul 20, 2009 Version: 1.02 This app is very easy to use.it requires no artstic talent, and it's free! Basically, all you have to do is choose the picture you want to oil paint from the pictures on your iPod and scribble over it! The ending result looks great! I reccomend this app! However, there are a few improvements that need to be made. For instance, you should be able to move and scale the picture you are painting. And it's a little annoying how the menu pops up every time you take your finger off the screen. But other than that, this app is perfect!
Pretty good By: Mister Mikey - Mar 18, 2009 Version: 1.02 I love this app but there are a few things I would change. 1. Make it so that when you close the app, the original picture stays, rather than there being a giant white space. 2. Eraser!! 3. Add the ability to work on more than one picture at a time4. Change the default brush setting from extra large to, say, medium or something. I've ruined several pictures having forgotten this. :( If these changes were made, this would be a 5 star app. Still really good concidering it's free. Thanks! :)
Love It! By: TheTallShortie - Mar 14, 2009 Version: 1.01 Okay, so I downloaded this app yesterday, and I use this app more than any other. It takes a couple times to get used to, but after that, it makes your photos look great! For those who don't get it, you put layers of ovals over each other. First you use the XL brush to color the page, then you put other layers of smaller ovals over the first layer. My one issue is picture that were taken in landscape form instead of portrait. The bottom of the photo won't show up, and they should make it so that when you flip your iPod, it will turn the picture. I will update my review if that is fixed.
GREAT!!! By: Bensgotreviews... - 21-Feb-2009 Version: 1.00 This is a great application! With practice, you can create some truly fantastic results, and it's certainly a great deal of fun.
However, as has been suggest both by me and other reviewers, there needs to be an option both on OilCanvas and Small canvas for a Landscape option, which is why I haven't given this app 5 stars. I'd like to be able to fit in the whole landscaped picture, either by a full landscape mode or the ability to zoom/reposition in portrait mode.
Still, really great app, thanks Satoshi!
