Description:
Enter text on your iPhone in a new, fast and fun way! Built on many years of scientific research at the IBM Almaden Research Center, ShapeWriter is a revolutionary text input method that frees you from the constraints and frustrations of a conventional method. Simply slide your finger on the gesture-keyboard and lift to complete an entire word. ShapeWriter's intelligent algorithms can turn the single gesture stroke into your intended word. For example, a stroke from F to U to N on the keyboard will be recognized as the word "fun". Ignore repeat letters. For rare names and acronyms, type only once and you will be able to shape write the next time. What the reviewers say about ShapeWriter: " I am completely astounded by this app. This is so fast and fun and accurate way of writing and I am just on the beginning of the learning curve. This is crazy." - ZDNet " 14 must-have iPhone apps " - Examiner.com " The mobile future of the keyboard " - New Scientist " Top 10 mobile applications " - 2009 Razorfish Digital Outlook " Top 10 iPhone Apps for Girls " - TotallyHer.com " Top 11 iPhone Applications " - Time.com " A revolutionary breakthrough" - jkontherun.com What the users say: " 'Revolutionized typing' is the understatement of the year. This technology should be part of every keyboard on all touchscreens. Someone nominate these software developers for a Nobel. No Joke" " Wow, wow, wow. I initially was skeptical, but I am totally and completely impressed with the product. Good interface, easy to use. Wow! " " Absolutely astounding " "I wouldn't type with anything else. " " Increases typing speed by at least 4 times if not more. Truly amazing" " turning the tide in the touch screen vs. plastic keyboard debate " " I can finally write a decent length email from my iPhone without wanting to kill myself" "This program is so fun it's hard to put down " "Coolest. Thing. Ever." Due to iPhone SDK restrictions, ShapeWriter on the iPhone is currently a standalone note-taking application. It also enables sending or replying to email messages. You can also copy and paste written text in ShapeWriter into any other applications. Features: * Automatic spacing and capitalization * Case key for cycling through all possible capitalization cases * Highlight/selection by double tap or sliding over text * Command strokes (e.g. Cmd-c-o-p for copy) * Backup all notes via email * Rearrange notes order manually (Click Edit button) * Automatic correction of common misspellings * Practice game and competitive scoreboard posting Instead of ShapeWriter Lite, consider purchasing ShapeWriter Pro for the full set of features and customization, including: * Landscape mode and orientation lock * Sorting notes in any order (by date, title) * Background grid on/off switch (from iPhone Settings>ShapeWriter) * Customizable fonts (from iPhone Settings>ShapeWriter) * Customizable notes colors (from iPhone Settings>ShapeWriter) * Notes password protection * Notes content search * SMS texting support

Reviews:
This Program Rocks! By: Tech Guy 5x - Jul 26, 2008 Version: 1.0.1 It only takes a little practice to get good at using this program. I'll be using it all of the time. You can type with only one finger and still be pretty fast. It pays to have the keyboard layout memorized as sometimes your finger will be hiding the next letter you are hunting for. Absolutely fabulous program! I am surprised it is free. I won't be using the built in Notes program anymore. To the developer- it might be nice if there were a landscape mode so the keys could be bigger. You're probably already on it, but if I were you, I would make an "added features", paid-for version.
Finally, a text entry I can use!! Wish it was default for all iphone text entry... By: jcdoyleonline - Nov 25, 2008 Version: 1.0.7 This is an incredible idea. I have been so impressed with both the ease of use and user interface. I just wish somehow Apple and/or the developer could make this method of text entry an option for anytime keyboard entry is needed, without switching applications. This is hands down way better than the hunt and peck method, with the tiny keyboard buttons. I'm using this program for any emails now I send out that are long, for notes, including lecture notes (no more paper needed!) since I can enter words almost as fast as a speaker can say them. GREAT program!
Very impressive! By: McQ14 - Nov 7, 2008 Version: 1.0.7 It took me a few days of use to get used to it but it works great. I'm still faster with the default iPhone keyboard, but this is amazing app.
It amazes me when it figures out words. My only problem is that I never took a real typing of keyboard class and have to see the keyboard to type anything, so I make a lot of mistakes. But I do that with all keyboards, so it's a personal issue!
Great app!
Unbelievably Good! By: jmajma - 16-Dec-2008 Version: 1.0.7 Incredible. This is far and away the best method of entering text on a small-screen device. So much more straightforward than the iPhone soft-keyboard or handwriting recognition systems of other apps on this store. Apple; if you're reading these reviews, buy this company and build the technology directly into the iPhone! It is possible to use the software as an interface to the native iPhone email client (see the tutorials), but having it as a native input option for all applications would be great. Thanks to ShapeWriter for, probably, the best application in the app store.
Faster than typing, as fluid as pen on paper. By: quatrevin - 30-Jan-2009 Version: 1.0.7 A new way to write on a touch screen.
I find it faster than typing and as fluid as a pen on paper. Once you get comfortable, it's a little hard to go back to typing.
With more settings, a bit of time and more user imput, this app will have no other fate than to become another way to interact with a touch screen.
I, too, wish it would become an optional keyboard on iPhones.
Bravo for your ingenuity!

Revolutionary By: spiritflare - 25-Jan-2009 Version: 1.0.7 This could be a new way to type on touchpad devices. The downside is because it infers the correct word even if you mispell it - you might forget how to spell words when you really have to write them out on paper or in an email.
However Apple should have integrated this as an option - it's faster than the keyboard in some cases.
Improvements:
A) algorithm refined to pick up words, especially those with double letters (ex: "pp" in application)
B) ability to push a button to bring up the keyboard in the mail app directly without opening this app first
C) tactile feedback sound option when drawing or when word cannot be found (small error beep)
D) support landscape mode
E) remove words added to custom dictionary so it doesn't keep trying to offer your word even if you accidently added it to the dictionary.
Overall a very promising app and can see this going to be a paid app one day soon if Apple doesn't buy them
Out first.
ShapeWriter is almost revolutionary By: reesevans - Oct 10, 2008 Version: 1.0.5 I've been using this app for a week or two, on both iPhone 3G and iPod Touch. It has never crashed either platform, it has a high recognition and rate and seems to learn your patterns. This is pretty sophisticated recognition technology for free, can't get better than that. I agree with all the reviewers who want to see it as an optional input method for the iPhone/Touch keyboard. Landscape mode would be nice too.
Incredibly fast - Surprisingly accurate By: MonkeyMan420 - 24-Dec-2008 Version: 1.0.7 I wish I had the option to enable this on the keyboard throughout the platform of my iPod! It is such a quick and easy way to get through typing that gets tedious when hunting-and-pecking. I've noticed a few problems with apostrophized words and so forth, but all in all I'm amazed by the accuracy. Looking forward to updates - and hopefully the ability to implement this system across-board!
Wow, wow, wow! By: Sha-SCAM - Nov 9, 2009 Version: 3.2.0 Wow, wow, wow! I am forever the skeptic and scoff at hyperbole, but this is . . . WOW! You can't yet use it yet in every keyboard-related app yet. But for anyone like me who types a lot and is in a hurry a lot, my reaction was almost like the first time I saw the internet-- this is gonna change everything! Calling this "a fun new way to enter text" and "revolutionary" and "extraordinarily fast and accurate", doesn't begin to cover the impact this has. "Fun" is very true, but I would consider dropping it from the descriptions because it belies the extreme utility of this invention. I couldn't disagree more with those who state it can only be used for "notes to self," though it is useful for those. I can think of features that could be added, like an "undo" command, or the ability to load in an entire custom word list all at once--for, say, medicine (my field). The biggest change to make it more useful for me would be refinement of copy/paste and an easier way to "select all" so that you can cut or copy selected amounts of text, or the whole page, accurately. At least in theory, it seems you are already supposed to be able to select specific areas of text, but I can't get it to work well. It needs to be easier to do this, more like the current implementation in other iPhone apps where you can change the size of the shaded rectangle to change the boundaries of selected text). Perhaps some of these features are there already, I confess that I haven't even read the instructions, because once you get just a little feel for the new method (you have to quit thinking like a typist and embrace the shapewriting concept as a method of its own) it is absolutely intuitive. I wrote this review on ShapeWriter and selected "send as new email", then used "select all" and "copy" and then pasted this review here. Even with this silly extra step, it's worth the time I save from shapewriting as opposed to typing if the length of what I'm writing is more than a very few words.
Wow By: zKeeper12 - Oct 8, 2008 Version: 1.0.5 This is a great app. Understanding that this is on the app store solely as an experiment for the system behind this, the system is near perfect. My only complaint for this as an app is that I have to pause andlook for the letter I need under my finger, so maybe the developer could implement a system where it shows the letter your finger's on like the iPhone does when you are typing regularly, this would get an 11 out of 10 easy.
So good I already miss it. By: StingersSwarm - Oct 6, 2008 Version: 1.0.5 This is the first time I have actally liked an app so much that I felt compelled to submit a review. After maybe a minute and a half using this app I already miss it in writing this review. This Is so good I really wish I could cut and paste bow because I wouldn't type with anything else. I hope that apple might consider rolling this function into future software updates for the iPhone so I can shape write in any situation.
This application made me buy an iPod Touch By: Daniel I. Harris - 11-Nov-2008 Version: 2.0.0 I love this application. I had wanted an iPhone/iPod touch since they were first announced, but always had one major problem with them: I couldn't type fast enough to make them worthwhile. I always said, "When a good collapsable keyboard comes out for the iPod touch, I'll buy one." Then I found WritingPad. With a single finger, I can shape 50 words a minute. It's an amazing application. It's made writing documents feasible on the iPod/Phone. It's made writing e-mails quick and fun. Though I'm still faster on a regular keyboard, it somehow feels better to just shape the words. I can't explain it. It's just a fantastic program. If only Apple would make this keyboard an option for the rest of the iPhone/Pod! Every time I have to type in Safari, I'm reminded of just how much more fun WritingPad is. Download it. Try it for an hour. Trust me, you won't regret it.
Thinking Out Side The Box. By: Fever Pitch - Jul 21, 2008 Version: 1.0.1 Shapewriter, is a good and innovative idea that's getting better and better with each iteration.
Unlike hand writing recognition apps, this app allows you to draw the entire word using the iPhone's key pad as a guide. If it's not the word that you intended to input, Shapewriter presents you with possible matches on an easy to read word bar. I find myself quickly getting the hang of this and i must say, that alone with typing on the iPhone, it really can increase the speed and accuracy of your input. I'm thinking maybe apple should buy this app from Mrs. Wang, to use as an alternative to the ordinary keyboard input. Thanks Mrs. Wang, you have shown me; and given me something different and new.... and fun!
Seems really great so far By: SeattlePam - Sep 29, 2008 Version: 1.0.5 I've just started using this (just got my iPhone a couple of days ago). So I don't know about long-term stability issues others have mentioned. But so far, I'm simply blow away by how easy it is to enter text this way. Typing with the regular keyboard I find really awkward. I especially like that with WritePad you can't misspell a word. I do wish it would recognize contractions -- such as "I'll" -- since I use them a lot in emails etc. Overall, fantastic app.
Great App! By: eket - 9-Oct-2008 Version: 1.0.5 I absolutely love this app. I find it much easier and faster to input text using this method. It is less work and requires less accuracy than typing letter by letter - I find if I use 2 thumbs, I make more frequent typos than I do with this. The shapewriter software is very forgiving, and will usually recognize words even if I don't quite hit all the letters. And, you *can* add words to the dictionary, so it will recognize any words you use that aren't already in the built-in dictionary. It would be nice to be able to sort notes into folders, but that is not worth removing a star for, especially considering the software is free.
Best application in the store! By: Steve Krug - Jul 21, 2008 Version: 1.0.1 This is the only app that I've seen posted so far that is truly amazing. It's a *far* more efficient (and *far, far* more fun) way to enter text on the iPhone than the standard keyboard. As several people have already suggested here, Apple should (for once) drop its "if we didn't invent it, it's not a work of genius" attitude and aquire this company and make it a keyboard option in the next iPhone software update.
Very Cool By: Dr Mudius - Jul 20, 2008 Version: 1.0.1 This works suprisingly well for long words, and you don't have to be to accurate which is cool.
Apple should definetly adopt this as a different option to help sway people from there real keyboard because I would like to use this for other things like SMS
I would like them to make the keyboard more like the native iPhone keyboard and the numbers option the same
I would also like to see the keyboard go into landscape mode
Besides that this writing style has the potential to be faster then the regular keyboard if you know how to type and don't need to see the whole keyboard the whole to (because your finger covers it)
Awesome program - what a feature shape writing is! By: Ljg-- - Sep 23, 2008 Version: 1.0.4 Excellent way to type on an iTouch (iPhone). The one thing I'd like to see in the next iteration is landscape mode for a bit larger keyboard. I hope Apple sees this shape writing technology and considers incorporating it into these wonderful little companions. It is about four or five times faster to type this way...and that's after only 10 minutes messing with it. I bet after an hour, it will be second nature, and all the other programs which require manual input a letter-at-a-time will seem out of date. Thanks for this great utility!
Awesome! By: Bookwirm94 - 2-Sep-2008 Version: 1.0.2 This app is terrific, and I use it all the time when emailing people (in fact, I wish I could be using it to write this review :). The only problem I have found so far, is that it doesn't register a couple contractions like I'm and it doesn't allow me to input them. It would be also nice to have a little magnifying glass like the normal note app. And last but not least, it often takes a while to load. All in all I would still pay a few dollars for this app, and so I can't ask for a better deal :)
One of the best By: Writer58 - 23-Aug-2008 Version: 1.0.2 If you're not familiar with the layout of the QWERTY keyboard this app might not be as worthwhile as for those who are touch typists or know the keyboard well. I had my doubts about the software when I downloaded it, but after using it I can't believe how accurate it is - far more than tapping away at keys on a cell phone, for instance, and hoping the system recognizes your word first time - or even second time. Simply dragging your finger to the keys to spell out the word is fast and simple. Inputting words that the system doesn't recognize is also very easy. The advantage of writing a note so quickly and then clicking on the WritingPad's email button is far more efficient than sending a regular email from the Touch or iPhone. I'll be recommending this app. Excellent work, ShapeWriter.
