Definitive  rating of Cocktails+
By: Drunken Monkey - May 29, 2009
Version: 1.6.2
This is the one cocktail database for your iPhone/iPod. To borrow a phrase from Robert Hess of drink boy fame, there are a lot of "Wad-O-Drink" books and apps out there that have a huge number of cocktails in them. The problem is that most of the recipes are neither definitive or particularly good. This database takes its recipes (and there are a lot of them) from books by legends of the cocktail world like Dale DeGroff, Ted Haigh and Harry Craddock. The recipes represent the best of cocktail artistry and scholarship. In short 2,000 great (and accurate) cocktail reciptes are much better that 6,000 that are likely wrong. If you are a serious cocktail drink, this is the app for you.

Cocktails has it all  rating of Cocktails+

The first thing you notice about Cocktails is the impressive interface. Having the recipe listings look more aged the older they are in a brillant touch that really wows people the first time they see it. The drink recipes are also exactly what I would look for. I like that the older recipes use sugar over simple syrup and all the recipes have detailed mixing instructions. The addition of the masters recipes is fantasic. Cocktails is an indispensable utility that I will love to carry with me everywhere.

Fantastic!!!!  rating of Cocktails+

Excellent source of obscure classic cocktails and then some. Love the fact that they are referenced and that I have multiple options for searching. I also LOVE that most of the recipes are from older sources and not cocktails that can be easily found in every cocktail book or by a simple search on the web. It is easy to see why a Vegas bartender (who posted earlier) wouldn't like this app; the majority of the recipes here create cocktails with complexity in flavor and cultural significance. As a working bartender I use this app ALL THE TIME at work in order to give my guests a cocktail that they wouldn't have tried everywhere else. I have found this program to be very stable as well; it has not crashed once, and I purchased it on day one.

One of my favorite iPhone apps  rating of Cocktails+

I download lots of apps and usually don't take the time to write a review, but this is one of the best apps I've used. I've tried the other free cocktail apps, but none has the depth and polished feel that Cocktails has. The ability to see a drink's history and how it's changed over the last century is one of the most fascinating aspects of this program. Also, the developers have been very responsive and receptive to feedback with me. Highly recommended!

Fantastic app  rating of Cocktails+

Incredibly useful and masterfully designed. I use the favorites feature to bookmark drinks I'd like to try so when I'm buying ingredients I know what to get. Sorting by base ingredient or even better by flavor is a great way to discover new drinks you might not try based on the name alone. If you're a drinking enthusiast, budding mixer, or just want to experience some new tastes, buy this app. You won't regret it!

Indespensible - bartenders NEED this  rating of Cocktails+
By: Chuq - Sep 29, 2008

An immense work of scholarship. This compendium of great, proven cocktails both old and new is exactly what we need, given the current state of bartending in the U.S. If a bartender were to pick a half-dozen of any of the historic cocktails in here and put them on a menu as drink specials, people would think it was the newest and best thing they'd ever tasted. At the same time, there are dozens of cutting-edge, brand-new drinks here, with more to come. I believe that the spurious one-star review complaining that nobody ever orders these drinks is indicative of why the state of bartending is currently so very low. This app helps inspire bartenders and mixologists from both the past and the present to help carry them into the future of well-made, high quality cocktails with fresh juices and top quality ingredients, used in the most creative ways. Without this we're condemned to more overpriced swill from the gun and the industrial premixed sour mix bottle.

An amazing little program for those who love cocktails  rating of Cocktails+
By: groukas - Sep 3, 2008

I've been a cocktail lover for a very long time, and I'm always amazed at how bad most bartenders are at mixing a decent drink. Even in New York City there is a pretty short list of bars that really GET it (the rest just serve wine, beer and 500 slight variations on a theme of a base, sour mix, and a garnish) and this is a great guide for those of us who APPRECIATE it. Classic cocktails are classics for a reason: they're good! Not every one will appeal to everyone, but there are tons of great drinks in this database and they even talk about different variants that have surfaced over time. The French 75, for example, has recipes that were published in great bar books from 1930 to 2004. If you have the info in this application, you're ready to go into a bar and negotiate with the bartender to get something that will taste good rather than something that's just quick to make. There is nothing, and I mean nothing, like having a fresh, handmade cocktail from someone who knows their craft. This little guide will help you identify those who can and greatly increase your enjoyment of the bar. Salud!

The Mixologist's Friend  rating of Cocktails+

Containing nearly every classic cocktail you can imagine, Cocktails is an indispensable iPhone app for the modern swinger and his (or her) space-age bachelor pad. Missing only the most obscure tiki drinks, but I'm a stickler for that particular shade of the cocktail spectrum. The presentation is top notch - just note the subdued "favorite" star and the subtle aging of the pages as the recipes get older and more revered. Easy on the eyes *and* the wallet, Cocktails is the cocktail recipe book for your iPhone that you've been waiting for. Highly recommended.

Best cocktail book I own!  rating of Cocktails+
By: Stux - 20-Jul-2008

I have a number of cocktail books. My favourite has a 1000 cocktails in it, but it doesn't have any good indexes. This app seems to have all the cocktails but can sort and search by base, flavour, characteristic and tens of other things. This is exactly what you want in a good cocktail reference, but this one takes no space! The presentation is fantastic too! In future it might be nice to allow notes to be added to pages, and possibly photos. Thanks

Great app with premium content  rating of Cocktails+
By: jdh - 9-Aug-2008

The user interface on this app is very polished and the search and category options are representative of the real world (for instance, I'm more likely to want to find a cocktail recipe in general then to worry about ingredients). What makes this app *really* stand out from the rest, however, is the outstanding quality of the recipes. These aren't concoctions thrown together at a college frat party, but real recipes from a variety of different reputable published sources and are all very interesting and high quality.

Too Much For Me.  rating of Cocktails+
By: 1010110110 - Apr 12, 2009

This app is intended for people who go to fancy dinner parties at a fancy hotel where a fancy bartender works who knows all the drinks is doing his thing. If you are that person then get this app while it's still free. It has a large database with drinks I've never heard of and the screens are fancied out making it classy I suppose. If you want a nice app with a large collection of cocktails, this app serves it's purpose well. Hence the 4 star rating. However if you're a person like me, who accepts the fact that liquor (no matter how it's packaged and prepared) is intended to get you drunk, this app is probably not so great. I just wanted an app with a list of drinks I could make from the liquor and juice at the local block party, and this was not it.

a cocktail encyclopedia  rating of Cocktails+

When I first saw this app, I laughed. Too tempting.
I could see myself saying, "I'm not saying I like to drink, but I do have a cocktail encyclopedia in my phone."
Now whenever the bartender does not know how to make my drink, I can show her. Instead of her making a drink she hopes is similar and ends up putting me on the floor.
This app lists cocktails by name, and has a search. But it also lists them by Base, as in Gin drinks; it also lists them by Type, as in sour or tall etc.; and by Flavor, as in dry or butterscotch; and by Tag, as in non-alcoholic, breakfast, or aperitif, etc.
It is a little jerky, but too tempting.

Great!  rating of Cocktails+

I love this app- it's been on my front screen since day one. The classic cocktails are a treat to make, and the scholarship on older drinks is second to none. All very tastefully rendered and easy to navigate. The app would be perfection with the addition of one item: the ability to add your own recipes and add annotations to existing ones. That would really complete this wonderful app. I prefer the old icon though - much more in keeping with the classic theme throughout the rest of the app. Please return to the old icon!

I agree with the last two reviews, would be better if you could find out what could be made from what you already have not what you need to get. Good app though. Just needs a tweek.

I figured 6 quid might be a bit too much but still worth it, if it does what it says! Have to say got myself a little gem here! The ability to search and cross reference the drinks from do many angles is great! Anyway by the time you have mixed a few of these drinks you won't worry about the money!!! Brilliant get it just for the hoot!
