Amazing application thankyou dictionary.com. Best part (and what sets it apart from other similar apps) is it stores recent words so you have a list to build your vocabulary. wish it was tiiny bit quicker but excellent. Don't waste time download today! ****I had to take it down one star because speed is an issue, please make this app more 'fluid' and quicker**** 17/06/09 - back to five stars!!!!! Previously I would use Safari to occasionally check (online) how a word is spelkd or pronounced - and of course I quite like to use the ‘wordbook’. Now, (surprisingly) it’s one of my favorite applications and lives proudly on the home screen. If I feel a little bit silly I search for swear words and use the audio pronunciation to play certain naughty expressions from the back seat of public transport... Coming to a back seat near you, as soon as the kids figure out the true potential.

This app is such a must have! I have a speaking part in a band concert ANSI was mispernocing it untill the day before! So, I looked it up in here and found it intintly!! And for all u haters, it has a notice saying it's going to tale ling cause it loads everyword. HELLO ITS AN OFFLINE APP PEOPLE ITS NOT GOING TI TAKE 3 SECOUNDS TO LOAD! DUH!! so, just get it. 

The only big gripe about this app is that, since it utilizes the online versions of the dictionary and thesaurus, you'll need to make sure you have signal or are on WiFi. Still, it's so much better than any of the other free alternatives because the interface is speedy (due to a good programming team) and the content is satisfactory and professional (unlike most of the handicapped free dictionaries in the store, which just buid their own user interfaces upon the same exact definition database: the freely available Princeton WordNet 'definitions', which were never meant to be substituted for real dictionaries). Unless your willing to pay for the app versions of ink-and-paper dictionaries like Oxford or American Heritage ($15-$35), which have a slower initial start-up time but are the most thorough and will work offline (e.g. on a subway, or a train or plane with no WiFi), this free offering is the best option. And an awesome one, at that!

This is the best dictionary available (free or paid). The definitions are drawn from a standard reference (the Random House Unabridged Dictionary) and are similar to what would be found in paper dictionaries. The app is fast and robust (i.e. it does not freeze or crash), and it is possible to find definitions without an internet connection. Unlike other reviewers, I have not encountered any nagware issues. (Given that the app also does not feature advertisements, I wonder how they make a profit from this app.) The only minor drawback is that some extra features, such as the audio pronounciation, are only available with an internet connection, although it can still be used to look up words without the connection.

I use this app nonstop. Sometimes I'm writing a paper and I don't have any wifi and I need a synonym or a definition for something. Without this, I'd have no easy way of finding that definition or synonym. Sometimes during class my teacher mentions about how he doesn't know what this word means or if anyone knows etc. so I quickly look it up and give dictionary definitions. It's entertaining and funny.

this is a great app and as you can see from putting 5 stars i do not want to ruin its presiding rating ----
anyways, I watched my "FREE SPACE" on my iPod touch page on iTunes go from 440 point something MB down all the way to 201.1 MB
and I knew that the only app it was updating was Dictionary.
basically this app takes up about

i could be wrong about the numbers but just know that what is posted on the info for this app is EXTREMELY UNDERESTIMATING the actual size of this app.

ok people. this is for somebody that wants to buy this application,but isnt sure if it will work good or will take to long to download.
1. if you have a highspeed internet,it will take less then 30 seconds to download. its no problem. if you have wifi or a slow internet connection,it might take longer.
2.it works good.
3.you guys should buy pocket god!!!!! jeeeeeez i love that game!!!! did you know you can name them now??!!??!!??!! SWEET!!!!!!

How many times have you found yourself searching for a word or wondering what a particular word meant, even reading something and wondering exactly how a word is pronounced. This is one of the most useful applications I have found, and the fact that it is free just puts the icing on the cake. Word of the day is a great feature, in conjunction with the thesaurus you will find that your vocabulary is expanding at an exponential rate. When I came across this app I said to myself, "this is a most auspicious app" I love that word, look it up.

As most people are saying, this app does crash every now and then (rarely for me),
But I think the problem is the Search History ("Recent"), which stores every entry you've looked at with no apparent limit. I Think that is what's slowing the app down and crashing people's iPods. The Recent" menu should at least have a mass delete function, because now the only way to clear the history is go through each and every one of them and delete them by hand.
Otherwise, this is the best app I have ever seen, Screw the other dictionaries that cost 30 bucks! Dictionary.com is superior.

Freebie killer app has tutoring function, hidden in "recents" pane, which lets user go back to all words previously viewed. Students can browse thru recents, & quiz on meaning & pronunciation. (Intermittent repetition over several months is best way to learn new words.)
Makes paper dictionaries obsolete, IMHO, with its audible sound bites, which let users HEAR correct pronunciation. Weighs less, too! LOL
Has many foreign words & proper names, of historical note. Only drawback is that user must search WITHOUT foreign fonts or diacritical marks. Don't type or paste foreign alphabet letters into search box. First, try search with plain American ASCII alphabet.
App runs fine on 8 gB iPhone 3G, OS3.1, & 5.8gB of free memory. Could shortage of free memory be causing hangs and crashes, reported by some?

I got this app weeks after I first got my iPod, and it's still as good! This just isn't a dictionary, or reference app, it's an AWESOME app for screwing with people!! Let me explain, it has a talk button that pronounces the word for you. Simple? But what isn't listed here is that almost any curse word you can think of is listed, and can be spoken outloud! I was in line at mcdonalds, waiting patiently to order, when the lady in front of me (too big to be eating mcdonalds anyways) started yelling at the hard working teen at the register. So I took out my handy dictionary app, and decided look up the word, "a@@h0/3". Turned the volume up and put in my pocket, then pressed the sound button rapidly. The reaction was worth $5 if you had to buy this app! She turned around, and heard it again, but was baffled at where it was coming from ! TRUE STORY! when it was my turn to order I pulled out my iPod and showed it to the kid at the counter, he smiled and gave me my lunch for free!!!!!! A MUST HAVE ENTERTAINMENT APP FOR ALL AGES!!!!!!!!

I was reading reviews, and saw several 5 star reviews. I then saw on that gave only one star. When I read it I found out that the person had had a difficult time downloading the app, and because of that, they accused all Americans of being lazy. Just to spite that person, I downloaded the app. It took less than three minutes, and works perfectly. If you're going to criticize the app, feel free. But without Americans you wouldn't even have an iPhone. Therefore we win. Download this app and support the USA!

I LOVE the new Dictionary app - it is so easy to use and the content is fantastic. I especially love the word auto-suggest (when you are typing in a word) and the pronounciation features - the auto-suggest is especially great if you're not sure how to spell the word...just key in the first few letters and scroll down the list of suggestions... This is just what I was hoping for from my favorite website. Thanks Dictionary!!

This is perhaps the most useful application on my iPhone. Being a college student, it is of utmost importance to have an exceptional vocabulary and this applicationdefinitely helps in any situation. A powerful talking pocket dictionary! EVERY iPhone owner should have one and dictionary.com's is excellent. Now there's just no excuse to not know a word. Word of the day is awesome too.
Improvements:
1. Sample usage in sentences for more words. Not just word of the day.
2. Would be nice to have pictures too or those black and white drawings just like one sees sometimes in those paperback dictionaries.

This application has a huge number of words and phrases. Dictionary gives multiple meanings, some of which are not used anymore but there for you in case you need them, and gives a brief origins description. You can even have most words/phrases read to you (this and the word of the day are the only parts of the app that need wi-fi internet. The thesaurus lists brief definitions and their synonyms, and you can just press the dictionary button to find all the definitions for the word you are looking at, and vice-versa (this saves time by not having you retype the word. All of this, FOR FREEEEE!!!! I'd recommend downloading this now, while it is still free. Best $0.00 I've ever spent in my life!!!!
