Last changed: Version: 3.2 (iPhone OS 3.0 Tested)
Holy Bible is an easy to use Bible app with many translations. Each translation resides on the iPhone/iPod touch. The only time you ever need an internet connection is to download new Bibles.
Navigation couldn't be simpler. Just tap the top left icon to open the passage selector. From within the passage selector, you can manage versions and even enable split version view. Highlighting is as easy as it gets...just tap the verse number! Need to get to verse quick? No problem. Just slide your finger along the right side of the screen. This implements the verse jump slider.
Note: I will not be adding any copyrighted texts such as the NIV, NASB, NKJV, ESV, etc. because I cannot afford to pay the royalty fees. In order to obtain permission, it costs multiple thousands of dollars up front.
Keeping such a great app free and paying for bandwidth for downloadable translations is quite expensive. If you appreciate the Holy Bible iPhone app, please consider donating through PayPal!

I have been using this app for quite a while and it has to b the best Bible app out there. It's FREE, it has the NET translation, even some none English translations.
If you are reading these reviews, look at the average of all the reviews, not the few that gave this app one star. If you really read what those people are saying you will see that those people probably aren't happy with ANY app they download! This app is great.
Very nicely done! The best bible app...period!

I was impressed with the original app when it first came out as it had features that were better than I expected along with its ability to roll to a landscape view. The upgrades that came with it, including Daily Bible Reading, make it the best app available. My favorite version is the World English Bible, which is comparable to many modern translations and holds very close to the original Greek-Hebrew renditions.
Very well done, Mr. Avery! Highly recommended this one!

Great app and very handy!
I think 2 things sound like good ideas:
- have an alarm or reminder for your daily reading. Exmpl. You pick a book to read through and set a time when you might need a reminder ( before bed or something). Then it displays an alert reminding you to do your reading for the day in that book that you are currently going through (set the time and book in options menu).
- have a "Bible in a year" reading plan which uses alerts from above. It could integrate with the iPhone calendar or something.
Great app, I should use it more ( reminders would be helpful!)
WOW God's word to us in 14 translations

This is worth the price of an iPod touch or iPhone just by itself. I always carried a compact KJV in my backpack, and now I have that plus 13 more!!!!
Christians!!!! What an awesome tool to witness to unbelievers or to build up a struggling brother or sister. Not to mention how uplifting it is to always be able to read or study for onesself. I would have paid $500 for this app alone!!!! What could be better than God's written word in your pocket always? Amazing

I searched for a long time trying to find the best bible app. This one is definitely it! I love the multiple highlighter colors and the notes. One thing I would like, however, is to be able to search for the verses that are highlighted a certain color. So I can pull up all of my verses highlighted in blue, or pink, or whatever. There has also been a problem with the app freezing and shutting off when I try to change my preferences. Not cool. Otherwise, I can still use the bible part of it and get into the Word. Great app!God bless!

Wow is all I can say Paul you figured out what people want in a mobile app. You deliver God's Word in a way that makes it easy to find a passage or just read. You added the right customizable features. My favorite is the ability to change the font size, background color (black) and the text color. How much do you need to purchase a license for NASB, NLT, NIV or ESV my favorite versions. I'm donating now so count it as a blessing as you have blessed me. (My most wanted feature-commentaries and Bible dictionary. What I like the least-diificulty in figuring out how to split the version selection) H.Swayne

This is the best Bible app and a definite keeper. It is easy to navigate and looks nice, and I absolutely love the icon. It's wonderful to be able carry God's Word around in such a tiny package, and Paul Avery provides it the way it should be: plain yet elegant, without unnecessary clutter or uninspired additions, and for free.
The reviewer who wants the name "Jehovah" in their Bible, just download the ASV version, that one contains God's name in all its verses as far as I can tell.
Thank you for providing this wonderful app, I couldn't think of a better one.
One of the two top Bible apps. for iPhone

Many people want to have quick and constant access to the Scriptures. This (PAHB) and the YouVersion/LifeChurch Holy Bible app. (YVHB) are excellent resources. For most people, the other app. will probably be the better choice. Four features make the YouVersion.com/LifeChurch stand out: the number of translations and languages (40 trans./21 lang.!--but >warning!< not all are downloadable and so need internet access to use them), the cross-references to study material (wow!), the handy interface (tap and hold) that gives access to bookmarking, emailing or to the study aids, and general ease of use particularly that the search window takes Bible book abbreviations. Both offer bookmarking and the same Daily Read feature to read through the Bible in a year. The PAHB has some features beneficial for the advanced student (me) like texts in the original Greek (Wow, and double WOW! The Byzantine has the accented text.) along with a split screen feature that allows one to compare translations. Also very helpful in the PAHB is the landscape view, the ability to highlight verses, a search history icon, and multiple English fonts. It's your choice, but I think the YVHB app. would be more popular and helpful for the average Bible reader. They are both free and so I have both--one for my favorite English translation, the other for my Greek reading. I give both a 5 rating--they pack a lot in a little space.

This by far is the best Holy Bible offered on itunes. Its free and you dont need an internet connection unlike the other version of this which does require a connection. It includes diffrent versions so you can customize which version u like best! Its free and the best way to carry a bible without actually carrying a bible around! Great 4 teens who get embarresed bringing a bible with them to church! And Did I mention its FREE!!
Not you typical free bible

I love this app. It is not like the others at all. I like how it is free, I have used this app since i came out and I can only say wow at how easy it is to use, and I love how Paul finnaly put in a Hilighter.
I just have one beef, When I first downloaded this app's new update, every time I tried to change my 5th hiligher color (my first 2 were changed too) The app kicked me off back on to the home screen and all of my hilighters were back in a defualt color. Please fix it Mr. Paul. Thank you!!!
I like this version a little bit better but not a big change

Becuase when i would try to change the book to let say proverbs and push the arrow pointing right it would take me to the home,or main menu or even sometimes to the bible settings but then i downloaded it again by connecting my ipod to my pc and the bugs were gone but still not very good impression but anyways its a reallly good app
Excited about Greek NT and Septuigint
By: bbivens - Nov 27, 2008
I was very excited to see the Greek texts available in a free translation, and even more excited that Paul is looking to add the punctuation, accents and breathing marks. This will make it easier to distinguish the word that is written.
A couple of suggestions:
- Ability to flip between translations while remaining in the same chapter
- Ability to search in the Greek for words (either phonetically, or with a greek keyboard)
- Maybe bundle this app with your Greek flashcards and templates for $10 or so, giving people the ability to dig a little about the words.
- Add Matthew Henry's commentary, which I believe is public domain now...
All and all, for a free Bible app, this is very well thought out. It works great, and to a Greek student, I am thankful for your efforts!!!

I go to church and everything and I always meant to read the Bible but I just never had time. This app has completely solved my problem! Whenever I'm in a line or something I just open this up and read it! I also like that you don't need an internet connection. I'm surprised there aren't a bunch of foolish atheists trashing this app in the comments actually. Great app! If you're a. Christian and want to read the Bible, what are you waiting for?! Get this app!
After latest update, The best Free Bible App out there
By: samson_ite - Nov 5, 2008
Before this last update it was an "ok" bible reader, and didn't have much functionality. After the update and the added functionality with notes, next/previous chapter, and bookmarks it went from just "ok" to "great". I would make a few suggestions though for future updates: jesus words in red, highlighting capability, inline notes, and the ability to email certain passages. Great App though. Best free Bible App out there, use it on a daily basis!

When I forget by bible this is what I can rely on. I am 12 and I can understand it great. It is an awesome app and for it to be free is even more amazing. Thank God for this! Lol :). I recommend this to anyone. Especially if you are studying religions in school. would have paid $10 for this! Only con about it is that it doesn't have Jesus' writing in red. But the important thing is that it is the bible:). Maybe if some people would read the description... the maker can't put the NIV version on. Too much money for him/her. It's awesome. No wifi needed also! :D
An app that takes the iPhone to a whole new crowd
By: DarthSkeptical - Oct 28, 2008
I'm deeply impressed by this app. In fact, I'd go so far so say that the ease with which this app can switch between versions and increase the font size makes this an app that can help the iPhone reach a whole new demographic. Seriously, the amount of money it would take to asssemble this many versions of the Bible roughly approaches the cost of the iPhone itself. I've shown this app to some pensioners and they are now seriously considering getting an iPhone, even though they've got pretty limited experience on computers of any kind.
One of the current Apple ads speaks of how the iPhone "changes everything". This app is one of the clearest examples of how that assertion is true.
Another thing well worth mentioning is the degree to which developer Paul Avery seems committed to improving the app. Since downloading there have been at least two updates, each significantly improving its value. A search engine, additional translations and easier switching between translations have all been added in less than a month.
By: JESUS Freak4ever - Oct 22, 2008
It is a good start.
Pro: does not need Internet connection.
It's FREE (there are other Bible App that are Free also)
Cons: need buttons to go to next chapter or previous chapter. Need more translations (NKJV, ESV). The search function does not work- when I search for a chapter of a book, I get only the first verse of the chapter and the verse before it. Sometimes I get a blank page after search. I am not sure if this is a bug or not.
Thanks for providing your services.
Greatest FREE Bible App...
By: Hansen-Quao - Oct 13, 2008
Purchased the ipod touch for my wife and installed the Holy Bible app before giving it to her as her wedding gift...she loved the gadget just as much as the app! Avery's officially my rival now :). Good job on the simplicity but would be easier to navigate if there was a search option for 'verses' not just Translation, Book and Chapter. Hope to see that in the next update/release of this great FREE app.
