Reviews:
Unique features By: Rmg2768 - Jun 13, 2009 Version: 4.1.0 I too have waited nearly an eternity for Laridian to publish the native app, but they must be happy with the revenue stream from their online Bible, oh well...
So I tried a few others, and am very happy I found Mantis. The NIV cost was hard to swallow at first, but the features provided in the app are second to none!
The most unique and useful features:
- slide-scroll selection of book-chapter-verse - very much like flipping thru a paper bible
- Nested bookmarks! I can create my own concordance!
- Nested notes - I use this to take sermon notes, by creating a dated folder and a combination of verse refs and freestanding notes
- inline toggle of user notes and cross refs - eliminates need for split screen or jumping back and forth
Scrolls faster than Olivetree
A couple of minor requests:
- notes sorting option "earliest first", so sermon and study notes show up in order entered (not backwards)
- manual sort of bookmarks, notes
- streamlined return to reading mode after creating bookmark/note - too many "done" keypresses right now
-At least 1 free commentary; Matthew Henry is free for several other Bible apps
Amazing! By: chaplain joe - Jun 1, 2009 Version: 4.1.0 Simply amazing! I started with the free version which worked so well I downloaded three other translations and everything is running smooth. I actually had another Bible application on my iTouch but Mantis is so much better. I love to use this as a stand alone Bible but it also makes reading a printed Bible so much richer because I can compare translations and Greek/Hebrew word meanings with a click of a finger. Awesome!
BEST app on my itouch By: palindrome - Apr 20, 2009 Version: 4.0.0 Please don't tell me I need to give a economics class In a Bilbe app review.
Compettion sets the price. This guys plugins are reasomable, check it out.
For the copywrite guy, it's true the actuall text of some of these cost plugins are in the public domain, I can assure everyone, these hyperlinks
added so we can easily manuver around inside of them were not there 100 + years ago :-) There are many many hours of work put in so that with a touch a finger we can instanally access information.
I am thankful for these programmers that spend hours coding and debugging, with the end result we as customers can for a fraction of a book price get instant information in the palm of our hand.
Incredible! By: Gameratepersonthing - Apr 14, 2009 Version: 4.0.0 This is one amazing app! Probably THE BEST that I've downloaded! I love the note and bookmark features. One thing that I hope is included in the next update is a way to easily email notes. A decrease in the price of other Bible versions would be nice (KJV can be tough to understand at times and it's nice to be able to go back and forth between versions occasionally.). It's great that Mantis Bible Study allows you to play music in the background while you read. This is a MUST HAVE application!
Beautiful App!! By: WildSky - Apr 8, 2009 Version: 4.0.0 Just wanted to say thank you so much for this! Streamlined, easy to use/navigate, lots of updates.
Just one request: please add a "night mode" (black background, white letters). I read at night alot. I turn the brightness all the way down but in a pitch black run it still glares so much. Night mode would really help make the long reading more comfortable, less intrusive to others (my little girls sleep in my bed alot) and help conserve battery.
Once more, thank you so much for a really beautiful bible app!!
Excellent! By: sssr - Apr 1, 2009 Version: 4.0.0 A complete library at your fingertips! This has made me study more it is so convenient. Thankyou!!
This is a 5 Star App now, but I would like to make the following suggestions for improvement.
1. Split screen. Seems so common on most every other Bible app, it is really missed here.
2. Allow me to "type" the first few letters (or common 3 letter abbreviation) of the book I wish to jump to in addition to the wonderful grids.
3. When opening lengthy "in-line" notes, it would be nice to have a "close" button at the end of the note in addition to the one provided at the beginning of the note.
Thanks again for the wonderful app!!
The Best By: WabashTrail - Mar 29, 2009 Version: 4.0.0 The UI is outstanding with a well organized tool layout. Search>Tap>Bookmark>Highlight. It's all there. Bookmarks include Folders + Sub-folders!!! Very Cool. Full Screen Opt(no toolbars) for improved reading. The Large Keyboard(horizontal) is convenient when typing. Toggles: Strongs on/off/word (underline) - Red Letter on/off. Billy Graham is right, the Nave's Topical Bible is a must have. I also love the Chronological Reading plan. The wildcard search function(*) in the toolbar, would be nice. Thanks Mantis for creating the best Bible App. :o)
Currently the best portable Bible. Period! By: WhoislikeYAH - Mar 21, 2009 Version: 4.0.0 I've tried many Bible applications and this is by far the best and most full-featured Bible app for the iPhone. So many excellent features, like double tap for full screen mode, inline Strong's definitions, inline search, easy and quick interface to jump straight to another verse, chapter, book, or volume. And I've got this all right where I am, any time I need it. The KJV Strong's is excellent. Completely worth it. The only program that even comes close to this quality. is the PC Study Bible (on PCs). Only very few things I could think of to improve this app at this point. One great improvement would be to allow uploading from there website of my notes so they are quickly accessed from within the app and then if my verse title were hyperlinked to jump straight to that verse. That would be great!
Great!!!! By: CoachLaz - Mar 17, 2009 Version: 4.0.0 You all do a great job of updating so consistently!!! If you could add a split screen view that would put this product over the top!!! The notes feature and reading plan options are exactly the sort of things that make a protable Bible worth having...is there any way to make a desk top sync option? That way we could study and update note from home and take them on the road to Bible study or to preach!!! Thanks again!!!
Love this app!! By: JELYJUNA - Mar 16, 2009 Version: 4.0.0 I've been using this app daily & I absolutely love it!
Note to developers: Prior to the upgrade, my folders in the bookmark section would always sort in alpha order. Now after the upgrade it's sorted in date order (the date when I created the folder). Is there a way to put the folders I create in alpha order? The Edit mode doesn't allow it. Any help will b greatly appreciated. Thank You & God Bless!!

Super Work, Outstanding Support! By: pike942 - Feb 11, 2009 Version: 3.1.0 I'm already super pleased with this software, but I'm even more excited by the response to suggestions on the forum for new, or improved features! https://mantisbible.com/Support/DiscussionForums/tabid/112/Default.aspx - I had been accustomed to using Olivetree's BibleReader on my Palm OS Clie. I still use it and love it on my Palm-top, but I hate the current version of BibleReader for the iPod Touch. - Mantis Bible Study to the rescue! - I love the search capabilities: All words, Any word, Exact match , Use of ? or * as wildcards - It remembers your last search so that if you tap a search result, but it turns out not to be the one you were thinking of, you can go back to the same search results without having to re-enter the criteria! Huge timesaver! I love the fact that it keeps a history of verses visited! I love the Bookmarks. I love the fact that I can tap a verse number, and leave a note. Once you've created it, you can edit it, or tap "note" to reveal it or to hide it. I've been creating my own chain-reference with the Note feature, but now I understand that the chain-reference feature is under development! So I can devote the note feature to my own personal commentary. More exciting new features are being developed as well. I love the fact that the KJV is available for only $5 by itself without having to buy a great big expensive package of junk that I have no use for! I love the fact that I can't think of anything that I don't like about it :-) Thank you LORD, for my Mantis Bible :-) All desire now is a New feature called Daily Bible Reading where I can check off my progress through the Bible.
Amazing By: MobilePastor - Feb 1, 2009 Version: 4.0.0 This software is simply incredible. PASTOR'S LISTEN UP!!!! The level of study that's possible with this app is nothing short of amazing. Especially using the King James w/ Strongs! Everything happens right in line with the text, Greek and Hebrew drop down right under the verse. Root words, links to every other place that specific word is used... And more, all without leaving the text itself!!! It's amazing. Makes it possible to study quite in depth anywhere. Thank you developers of Mantis Bible it's a wonderful product!
The Best! By: Uncommon1 - Jan 30, 2009 Version: 3.1.0 This is well worth it at any cost. I just installed update 3.0 and they have made one of the best applications for the iPhone even better. I use this app a lot. I carry my phone all the time so having the Bible at hand even in meetings is great. With the new updates I can take notes and bookmarks by sermon, series, and pastor and have them in one place to reference at the touch of a fingure. Now when I get into those situations where I know ibhave read it but cannot remember I can quickly refference the answer. Guys congrats on a GREAT app and keep up the great work for the Gospil. Thank you for all you do.
Incredible App By: Emmanuel Munoz - Jan 11, 2009 Version: 3.1.0 This app is so great, I don't even take my bible to church anymore!
Two beefs about the app... I appreciate that we can download other versions but the pricetags are rather steep for the bible...
The other is the branding, it's hideous! I wish the app button and the landing page looked better, right now it looks 80's and terrible! Listen, go to strongholdstudios dot net and I will hook you up! Christian apps shouldn't be ugly!
Best Feature Set By: mrarlen - Jan 7, 2009 Version: 3.1.0 This is my favorite Bible App! It's got great features. Highlighting passages and inputting my own notes are my favorites. Those two are must for a good BIble Study App. Syncing and Backing up the notes are also very nice. The Navigation controls are also good. Yes you have to pay for the Bible Versions you want (except free KJV), but if you want a true Bible Study App that's a small price to pay to really get into God's word.
I've looked at several, and this is the best for me By: East Coker - Dec 28, 2008 Version: 3.1.0 Simple and elegant. It has bookmarks, highlighting, great note taking, and searching. And you get all this as well as the KJV for free. The note taking is fun. The notes attach to the verse, and you have the choice to see the notes or not. The notes attach to every Bible version you get. Adding Bibles is easy, and they have some obscure ones. I added the Geneva for 5 bucks. I wish they had REB and Bishop's, but no one does yet that I could see, so I'm okay with that. The searching is unbelievably easy and yet as specific as you please -- any word, all words, exact match, then OT, NT, or all. You can even search your notes. I wish they'd improve their scroll function to make it like those rolling dials most other nicer programs have; it's a bit tedious scrolling for books, then chapters, then verses. But at least this function gets you verses if you wish to be that specific. The only thing I think that could tear me away is if Accordance Bible ever had an iTouch app that allowed significant syncing with my desktop application. But Accordance announced within the past day or two (today is 12-26-2008) that they may or may not develop such an app.
Makes the ITouch worth every penny! By: CJ_Natick - Dec 3, 2008 Version: 3.1.0 Re: version 3.1.0... I can't rave enough about this application. The interface is well designed and easy to use. However, the way content is integrated is a key highlight for me. I currently use the NASS (NAS with Strong's numbering). Each word is hyperlinked to the definition that allows me to instananeously see the meaning and usage at will. This is great tool for serious study. I used to have to have open several books and flip back and forth. Now, one small handheld delivers me everything I need. Sometimes I read the Bible just to read...to stay connected to the big picture, and other times I want to dig deep. This application allows me to do both easily. I also appreciate being able to turn down time (waiting for appointments or in lines) into an opportunity to study God's Word. Lastly, this app will be very helpful during group Bible study times. I don't keep all of my reference material in our living room so this will allow us to more quickly delve more deeply in our discussion times. I commend the developer for putting together such a wonderful and thoughtful application and offer encouragement to continue to expand the content offerings.
Good, particularly for free By: marginaleye - Dec 2, 2008 Version: 3.1.0 I gave an earlier version of this App four stars but have, since submitting that review, been really impressed by it's continued development, and think it has earned its fifth star (it's quite impressive, particularly for a free App).
I would, however, like to make a couple suggestions re. "add-on" Bible translations: (1) a translation from the Septuagint would be nice, as would (2) a Jewish translation of the Hebrew Bible (a. k. a. the "Old Testament") based on the Masoretic Text (isn't there a fairly modern one by the JPS?). I haven't purchased any "add-on" translations yet, but would download those if their prices were half-way reasonable.
Also, would it be possible to organize notes and bookmarks hierarchically, into folders? That would be a huge improvement. [ Added with version 3! Thanks! This application is great, and I'm really impressed by the ongoing improvements and refinements. ]
I keep coming back to this one! By: Love2Lift - Sep 25, 2008 Version: 2.0.0 I downloaded 4 Bible apps on my Touch (including the paid ones). I found myself coming back to Mantis every single time. The speed with which you can move from one place in the Scriptures to another cannot be beat! The app has a very intuitive interface. I never lose my current reading place thanks to the 'history' panel. Mantis Bible Study has so many more features - others covered them already. I just wanted to express my gratefulness and excitement. One little 'wish' - I wish the initial splash screen would not linger so long...But that's a minor thing. Thank You! ~Natalia
A Great, Complete Bible App.! By: EvenStephen2000 - Sep 15, 2008 Version: 2.0.0 This is an awesome Bible app. Sure, you have to pay for additional versions; but as it's been said on here before, many of the popular translations cost the developer for the right to use them. In addition, to create the best software possible, the developers need the time and the manpower to make these apps the best they can be. Mantis Bible company puts in the time and the result is an awesome product that I use all the time. Also, their customer support is top notch. They are helpful, very friendly and respond quickly. It's so tiring to see the complaints about people charging for a Bible. In fact, if you don't understand why, it's just not worth the explanation...but to end on a positive note, don't hesitate to get this app and enjoy its. It's a pleasure to use!
