This app is incredible! I'm do alot of graphic design and was so happy when I saw this app advertised on their website! I was skeptical about the apps ability to read fonts from the crappy 2mp iPhone camera, but it did it! With some of the most obscure fonts, no less! I have no idea what these other guys are talking about, just hol the camera steady and it works great! My only suggestion is to incorperate the new Copy and Paste method for pictures I find while using Safari. Saving them only to delete them is kind of a pain.Great app! 5 stars for sure!-Eric

The trick is that you must take photos in portrait mode (phone upright) not landscape mode and the text should be as close to level as possible. Then you have to crop ONLY the text sample, nothing extraneous. Finally, you must accurately identify the letters AND the case (upper case or lower case) of your sample text. Worked PERFECTLY to identify the "exact" type faces used for Communication Arts cover title and Outback Steakhouse logo which would be impossible to guess.

This is a very unique and useful app for the iPhone. I have never seen anything like this. And tell me, have you never wished you could know what certain font a sign or a brand is using?
I'm using this app for a short period of time but yet I feel that the is very confident. On my tests with signs and some packages it didn't missed any font and it guessed 100% of the fonts.
This is the Shazam of the designers.

WhatTheFont has long been THE standard of font-recognition. The fact that it now works on the go, and using blurry, poorly exposed iPhone pictures, makes it amazing. It processed a fuzzy, hastily taken image of a restaurant menu and identified the right font in the right style and weight.
As a $5 app, it would have been rad. As a free one, it's like a Christmas present.
P.S. Please ignore the peanut gallery complaining about font prices.

Useful and (mostly) accurate

WTF nailed the first two fonts I tried, but be sure to use a sample on a neutral background--it was much better at identifying individual letters when I did. To the reviewer who complained about spending $18 for a font, that is actually pretty cheap! MyFonts is my favorite font reseller and the prices are set by the foundry or designer who made the font. WTF is a free service they've offered for years to help us find the fonts we might wish to buy--most fonts are very expensive. Microsoft/Apple pays a lot of money to fontmakers to include so many quality fonts with their OSes.

I'd rate this app just behind Shazam in the Amazing Apps catagory. It's probably best for professional graphic designers (I are one) because we understand the need to identify and purchase quality fonts. Capturing the image can be a bit tricky (MyFonts should consider partnering with one of the iPhone steadycam developers) but once you've got a good one this thing goes to work and delivers the goods. I've relied on the WhatTheFont online tool for years, and having it on the iPhone is fantastic. Can't wait for a co-worker to ask, "Do you know what font this is?"

I use the web based service every now and then, but I can see this being incredibly useful for a quick identification while out and about. Perhaps it is a bit lofty of a goal to have it id the typeface from your chem book, but that is a camera limitation, not the software. The web based program is robust enough for that stuff. I can't see how this has a 2.5 star rating, unless everyone that has used it has been as clueless as our football-loving friend down there. As a design and typography student and someone who can understand the subtle cues a well selected, well loved, and undoubtably well crafted typeface can give to a project, I can see a great deal of use coming from this.

Excellent, but as WTFs actual web service only works with high contrast images I always curve the image in photoshop. If there was a way of greyscaling your photo and adjusting contrast, the app would be flawless! Just a thought for future development.Oh yeah, and taking a pic of the apps homepage (on myfonts.com) it didn't recognize it's own corporate header font, Bryant! LOL.But, if the only limit on this is the iPhones camera they aren't doing too bad. Contast adjuster please people ;)I personally will be using this a LOT. Cheers people!

Brilliant little app for typophiles, which works just like the web version. Use iPhone's inbuilt screen capture, or the camera for real world examples. Works remarkably well with handheld photos taken under pretty crappy lighting conditions.
Small criticisms are that it doesn't recognise the occasional font that I do (but presumably that it is a function of the size or workings of MyFont's database, not the iPhone application specifically), and that I have had some trouble using the touch screen interface to 'merge' two glyphs into a single letterform. But overall, especially for a 1.0 release, it's brilliant.

I am a designer and I am constantly looking for new interesting typefaces to use in my projects. Whenever I find an interesting one, I take a screenshot or snap a photo with my iPhone and then upload it in the WTF app. Great accuracy, love the app! 

This thing works amazingly with the 3Gs. The 3Gs' close focusing higher res camera provides a clear enough image and the app returns a list of the closest matches for you to intelligently sift thru. It identified a really obscure font in less than 20 seconds. For the price, an absolute find.
