Reviews:
Better than Wikipedia Mobile? By: fiona's daddy - Version: Okay, so I'll admit I don't have the competing app Wikipedia Mobile, but I've read the entire description and every review and I can't figure out what it has to justify paying for it that this FREE app doesn't already have? You have searching (article headings and in-text both), history, bookmarks, font-size adjustment, multiple languages, among other features I don't see listed anywhere in the aforementioned competitor, such as image saving, dictionary look-up, audio playback, ability to open page in Safari, landscape mode (with ability to lock or unlock orientation), link to related articles, e-mail article link. This app seems to be the complete package, at the best possible price. Only thing I can't tell is whether it cache's for off-line viewing. When I click on an article in the history, it seems to have to reload the page. That may be the only drawback. Might be nice to also see the "featured" and "in the news" sections that are on Wikipedia.
Awesome mobile wiki interface!! By: Retoxx - Version: This app does an amazing job at bringing Wikipedia to the iPhone. It is miles ahead of the official app, and I hope it remains that way. This seems to load pages faster, and it has all the features you would expect from a paid version. I will be upgrading to the pay version, but had to rate the free version to let others know that this is the only wiki app worth getting!!
P.s. - To all you complainers about loosing queue mode: Quit being so cheap and just pay the dev for his hard work if you like the feature so much. Seriously, it costs less that lunch!!
Wow By: Axemusica - Version: This surprised me. So what if it doesn't have the edit feature! Who's going to be that anal to be editing from their phone anyway. I love how it utilizes the landscape feature if the iPhone & the font size is adjustible for those squinty people. It also has a dictionary (wiktionary). For quick reference I.E. To settle a quick bet, it's perfect. I suggest every person that sees something & goes, "huh, I wonder." & tap their brow should have this app. I'm just wondering what's on the full one now, LOL.
Slick Wikipedia Interface By: Justin Norman - Version: This is the best free Wikipedia app I've used thus far and it really is an elegantly designed piece of software. The graphics (mostly the icon and startup screen) are very nice, the ad for the pro version is small and unobtrusive, and the interface is well-organized. Tables of contents, category links, and Wiktionary links are smartly kept in separate menus with the page content taking a front seat. I frequently use this application and am very thankful the developer has decided to give away a version as feature-packed as this for free. Thank you, and I look forward to future versions!
Best Free Wikipedia App By: JustinTheAtheist - Version: Striver333, the feature that allows the user to clear the Wikipanion history on the next launch is supposed to save you from the hassle of having to open the application to clear the history. There is a feature that allows the user to clear the history from within the application. To do this, press the bookmarks button (located at the top right of the screen in the search bar), then press the button on the bottom right of the screen that shows an image of a clock (this shows your history). Now just press edit (on the bottom left) and clear (on the bottom right). To go back to your bookmarks, just press the button that is next to the history button (this button has the bookmarks symbol). So to simplify this process: Bookmars Button, History Button, Edit Button, Clear Button. I hope this helps you to realize that the "Remove History (On next launch only)" is meant to be a time saver. I have read some other reviews from people who seem to be unaware that Wikipanion has the features that they are requesting. If there is a feature that you think is missing from Wikipanion, I suggest that you go to their website and read all of the included features. As for me, I just downloaded it and tested every available feature that I could see. I have tested all of the free wikipedia apps, and this one is the winner. Wikipanion is relatively quick to change orientation from portrait to landscape, or vice versa. The other apps either take a longer time to change orientation, or they don't have that feature. Wikipanion has many features and still keeps the screen organized and simple. It also keeps the true wikipedia style. If you really want an app that gives you the true Wikipedia functionality mixed with many new features specifically for the iPhone/iPod touch, then get this app. And if you have an iPod touch, I recommend that you purchase Wikipanion Plus, because it has the feature that allows the user to cache Wikipedia pages for offline use.
Stop Complaining that the Queue is Gone By: metsfan121 - Version: The Developer has made a fantastic application that he decides to make free for everyone to use. To make money, he has another version of this application that includes the Queue. By mistake, he put it into the free one, but it's only supposed to be in the paid version. If you want the Queue so bad, stop being cheap and pay the $4.99 or stop complaining that a feature in the paid version isn't in the free version.
Indispensible! By: NGC007 - Version: I have lost count of the number I have been asked to whip it out (my iPhone that is) to settle an argument in the pub and elsewhere. From who managed what team from when to when? When was the first Indians Jones movie released? Some more exotic questions like “how many protons has a Lithium atom got”? Really, if the only thing my iPhone could do was run this app, including making calls, it would be still worth having. The more you refer to the App the more you will want to again and again, it’s that good and sooo quick. In my opinion the best App ever.

Absolutely brilliant! By: Rip_Vega - 29-Aug-2008 Version: 1.1 This is just perfect and does exactly what is needed and no more - which is a plus. The font (arial?) is great. I'm not seeing Times New Roman like some others complain of, and the size is easily adjustable in Settings. Now that I've got it, I'd gladly have paid for it. Maybe there'll be a temptation to bring out a paid version with extra features, though short of off line reading, there's not much to add that wouldn't make it cluttered and over engineered. If I were the developer I'd just start charging now!
GREAT App. No Zooming or panning needed. Customizable Font Size, Quick table of Contents links By: PeteLP - Sep 6, 2008 Version: 1.1 1) All of wikipedia beautifully formatted for the iPhone in your favorite font size. Both Portrait and Landscape screens supported. 2) Always present, one click access to the current article’s table of contents. That contents page is re-formatted for perfect, finger-click access to all sections of the current article. (Formatted like Safari’s bookmarks, with indentation) It’s a pleasure. Get it.
Better than using Safari By: Anonymous Skull - Sep 2, 2008 Version: 1.1 I actually like this app better than using Safari now that the option to scale text is included. It's actually faster because it doesn't load a lot of the formatting and backgrounds that the wikipedia.com site has.
One thing I would like to see is a way to bookmark select articles. I like to save searches that I find interesting so I can check them out later with friends. Still worthy of 5 stars.
Most-used Application By: SkierGirl77 - Aug 31, 2008 Version: 1.1 Wikipanion has to be my most-used application; I use it to look up places I'm interested in, people that I haven't read about in magazines lately, new songs (where they chart, lyric meanings, ect.), and much more. It is a lot faster than searching on Safari. Some people would like to where they can edit on the go so if there was going to be anything new in an update that's what I would include. However, I am fully satisfied with the way it is: quick, simple, and ad free.
Easy to use; Solid performance By: Renegade 003 - Version: Wikipanion is very easy to use, and performs as well as your Internet connection. I mostly use this app on my home wi-fi connection and have had no problems with performace-- an occasional crash, but nothing major. The layout is very similar to Wikipedia, with all general information at the top of the page in an easy to read format. I have had problems with the app on the Edge network, but that is more of a network problem than a problem with the app. Overall, I would recommend this to anyone over the other Wikipedia apps.
Awesome, but... By: Jl0113 - Version: Nvm, I just went to use it again and realized my complaint is no longer valid. It opens up to my previous search like I wanted. Now it's pretty much perfect. THANK YOU!!
I love this app so much. It has the best search I've ever used. The suggestions are always right on and saves me time, especially with the faster loading time. The interface is beautiful too. I just have one suggestion. I wish it would save my searches and open up to the same page I was on when I closed it last. This would save me a lot of time when I use it for studying purposes and have to switch back and forth with safari. Otherwise it's an incredible app. Thanks!
A nice start By: Kleinias - Aug 28, 2008 Version: 1.1 It's nice to have a Wikipedia app for the iPhone, this one is free and while it lacks polish and features, it is free. If I were to offer any criticism (and I hesitate to do so for a free app), it would be that the text is rendered way to large. Because the text is so large, it leaves little room to actually read the text without constantly scrolling down to finish the article. Since this is free (at least for now), I'm not sure it will matter much to the developer, but once the text issue is fixed, I'll definitely increase my rating of this application. Update: With the latest release, there is now a "custom font size" option. This one little option now makes the text size much more legible and makes the app much more usable. My only other request is for a button to allow us to somehow email the page to another person. That would be great!
free, fast, fugly By: striatic - Aug 28, 2008 Version: 1.1 This application is faster than viewing wikipedia in safari and the text is easy to read. it is also a free app, which is highly commendable. The text size and paragraph spacing has improved with the latest update, since you can customize, but the info boxes and inline images still don't look very nice. You can click the "book" link to get a better breakdown of the page content, which is invaluable when browsing long articles. This is a very useful free application which still has some room for cosmetic improvement.
Best Encyclopedia I've Ever Fit In My Shirt Pocket By: QuidMalbugInPlano - Aug 26, 2008 Version: 1.0 Wikipanion is an excellent portable resource for almost any topic imaginable. Perhaps the computer version of Wikipedia is a bit better formatted. But Wikipanion has an amazing and broad scope of information and is formatted well to fit on an iPhone screen. Highly recommended and you can't beat the price! One thing I would recommend in future versions: when you click on a link and then later return to the referring page, the screen goes to the top of the referring page instead of scrolling down to the link. For long articles, it would be great to go back to exactly the place in the article where the link is located.
Definitely worth having By: Bookgirl 13 - 15-Oct-2008 Version: 1.4 I have both this free version and the iPedia app - both are good and both have some advantages over the other. I do find that the type face of iPedia and the rendering of the pictures more attractive and easy to read without any zooming in. But this app shines in the ability to see the contents of an article all at once, so that one can find information very quickly and easily. I also like the ability to save pictures direct to my iPhone photo album with one click. So I have kept both on my phone as I cannot decide which one I prefer, both manage to make reading Wikipedia on a mobile device easy and enjoyable.
Great By: Supateddles - 18-Sep-2008 Version: 1.2 Really great, would love an button to turn all hyperlinks to plain text as some pages can be harder to read with the blue links everywhere but no idea if this could be done and not the devs fault. Would also be a great addition if there was an email link to a friend option. Otherwise this is a very useful app that works quickly and isveasy to use gonna be putting this on my iPhone home screen as it's gonna be used tons. Nice work!
Excellent, but could easily be improved. By: Pilkington - 21-Aug-2008 Version: 1.0 What a great little app. The 'Bookmarks' section which allows you to easily jump between the headers of each article is very useful, as is the easily used other links section. However, the huge font size makes it flawed - it really is far too big - between 4 and 6 words per line (on portrait) or about 6-9 words on landscape. Decrease this size and it could be excellent. Apart from that flaw, it's brilliant, especially for someone who uses Wikipedia as regular as I.
