Description:
If government agents question you, it is important to understand your rights. You should be careful about what you say when approached by law enforcement officials. If you give answers, they can be used against you in a criminal, immigration, or civil case. 'Your Rights' provides effective and useful guidance in a user-friendly question and answer format. The application addresses what rights you have when you are stopped, questioned, arrested, or searched by law enforcement officers. This booklet is for citizens and non-citizens with extra information for non-citizens in a separate section. 'Your Rights' tells you about your basic rights. It is not a substitute for legal advice. You should contact an attorney if you have been arrested or believe that your rights have been violated. The information presented have been obtained from the ACLU and also includes detailed information on the ACLU as well as numerous court cases that they have been involved with over the years.

Reviews:
take it easy. A MUST HAVE. Let Freedom WIN By: Ken Le Yankee - Feb 18, 2009 Version: 1.4 This is a GREAT APP. Their is nothing new and surprising in the content. They giving us in this app what has been written and available for everybody. If you like freedom, you should have this. If you are complaining about this app, that mean it's maybe your first time to see this information. So , you need to learn more about yourself and go take some classes of civil rights or some. That's the basic things you should know living in GREAT AMERICA. it's not a personal thing. It's the LAW. We all love this country. A MUST HAVE
Re: Second Amendment By: The smartest man alive! - Jul 23, 2009 Version: 1.6 To the idiot who believes that the second amendment give us the right to arms without limitation...do your homework! The first words are "a well regulated militia". What do you think that means? The amendment was written when people carried muskets...not assault weapons! When our founding fathers wrote that amendment they never dreamed of the firepower and the horrors it would create for the citizens of this nation. Besides...they also thought slavery was a right! They weren't perfect and sometimes we need to amend the constitution to form a more perfect union. We need gun control badly to protect us from idiots like yourself. Thank you to the ACLU!!! Great app!
Good App By: Borg Sphere - Jun 28, 2009 Version: 1.5 Good app. While I am very informed on my constitutional rights and it didn't teach me too much about those, the court cases section helped me learn about that. The ACLU is an excellent organization that helps defend our rights from assault by government and this app just helps educate the public about their rights. The only improvement I suggest is a way to make it available offline for iTouch users who do not always have access to wifi, as it is many areas are unaccessable without internet.
As American As Apple Pie By: Backwater BluesCat - Jun 20, 2009 Version: 1.5 This is a wonderful primer of our fundamental rights as American Citizens. We should all be proud to live in a country where "these truths are self-evident". The ACLU provides our legal system with the necessary balance required to maintain justice, equality and fairness under the law for EVERYONE. There is nothing contained in this app that should be threatening to anyone who truly worships the freedom that we so often take for granted. Every concerned citizen and student of Democracy should have a copy of this information at their finger tips. Great Job!
every american with an ipod should have this By: i need to watch things die - Apr 14, 2009 Version: 1.5 with the new update this app is freakin sweet. if people are ignorant of their rights it just pushes this country further towards a police state. i can't emphasize how important it is to know your rights in what is becoming a more impersonal and controlled society. the updated material is great. i didn't expect to see the federalist papers on any ipod apps. seeing as how this is free i don't know why it's not the #1 downloaded app.
I'm not a terrorist! I'm a Patriot! By: arries - Mar 22, 2009 Version: 1.4 There are some government's out there that don't want people to know what their rights are, including some extremist groups. Of course, we don't need an app to tell us to remain silent, but there is more to that. Some people are honest and even that honesty can be railroaded. It still happens, even in America. For those that assume this app helps terrorist, well that's a myth brought about by people who would like to break down our constitutional rights. It's happening today, and we are not terrorists, we are tax paying patriotic American's, but we have extremists preaching fear because that is all they have. Extremists don't like the ACLU because it goes against the grain of their own belief of social control. We are American's and have the right to be free from those who wish to oppress other's. The ACLU has helped many innocent American's, and our laws treat people equally. We have constitutional rights of freedom, and some don't like that. As a former Marine I'm appalled when I see groups trying to take peoples rights away, and that does not belong in America.
An important and well-written app By: Evilpig - Mar 20, 2009 Version: 1.4 "Your Rights" is a great source of information about our rights as well as about the ACLU. The Q & A is great, but I love that it goes beyond that to include the Constitution (and amendments) and a section called "ACLU 100 Greatest Hits" which provides information about notable cases that the ACLU has been involved in, giving additional insight into how our rights have changed over time. There is a brief synopsis of each case as well as a link to Wikipedia for more information. The only suggestion I have for this would be to give the user the option to open pages in the mobile version of Wikipedia by default. I love this app!
Everyone needs this App. By: protectmycountry - Mar 11, 2009 Version: 1.4 The fact that we have overthrown the dictatorship that brought our nation to the brink of self-destruction is no reason to think our liberties are not threatened, not by a long shot. Freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, religious freedom are still under attack, and always will be, as long as human beings desire power. Cyrus, you've done an important public service. I'm making sure my kids read this. Thank you.
GREAT Update! By: Anonmom - Mar 5, 2009 Version: 1.4 This app is terrific no matter your origin or religious preference, unlike the moronic claim made below. The ACLU follows only the credos set forth in our nations founding documents, such as that awful, unAmerikan thing called the Constitution! Gasp!
This app is attractive, simply constructed. I like the Top 100 very much and Love the addition of News/Case Updates and Action Alerts!
It's a must have for true American Patriots!
STUNNED to discover how many xenophobic, jingoistic, cultural illiterates use Mac products, see their 'reviews' below.
Awesome By: DontTreadOnMike - Feb 23, 2009 Version: 1.3 If the ACLU supported gun rights, they would be the perfect organization. That is the only problem I have with them. That said, they are very good at what they focus on. This app was very informative, especially for someone like me who is wrongly on the terrorist watch list because of my common name, in addition to the fact that I plan to sight-see in Europe. This app may save me a lot of hassle in the future. 5 Stars!

Thank you!!! By: Moosefly - Feb 19, 2009 Version: 1.4 WOW - thank you for helping to protect our democracy with this app so widely available, everyone on US soil should know their rights and responsibilities afforded by our laws and Constitution. This app is very detailed, useful and valuable because ignorance of your rights and responsibilities fosters abuse by authority and breeds the mistrust and misunderstandings so prevalent in the world today. When others know, read and understand the strength of our freedoms, we'll be in a much safer world.
Solid app! By: dammitdexter - Feb 19, 2009 Version: 1.3 Many thanks to Cyrus for making this. It can be a very useful tool when you find yourself in an uneasy and scary situation that you've never been in before. Everyone, regardless of your politics, should definitely know what they can and can't do when facing the law whether guilty or not guilty. I encourage Cyrus to keep upgrading this app to it's full potential. It could definitely use some pop and visuals. Great work.
For every US citizen... By: mscott-the real one - Feb 18, 2009 Version: 1.4 Even the ignorant ones who think this is in any way supportive of terrorists. *ESPECIALLY* them. The contents of this application should be required reading for all citizens and non-citizens alike. (Not that I'd actually support *forcing* anybody to read anything! ;-) I am amazed at how quickly some people a willing to throw away the liberties that more than a million of our ancestors died to secure, just because some radical nutjobs killed a few thousand people. "Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety deserve neither Liberty nor Safety"
Amazing and informative app! A must for everyone! By: Raugustus - Feb 18, 2009 Version: 1.4 This has amazing information about the rights of US citizens. How can we protect ourselves from abuse if we don't know about our protections?
To say that this app protects terrorists is ridiculous. Sorry but that's how the US works. We have a system of rights for the people that the government cannot violate. We have due process of law that whenever there is a criminal or civil case.
It is important for people to learn their rights, and Im glad that this app exists.
Informative By: Def-tim - Feb 14, 2009 Version: 1.3 This is an app that gives you a little bit of backing if you were unclear on legal situations.
Furthermore, I don't know for sure, but I'm guessing that they're aren't too many illeagal aliens or terrorists that own iphones or the Ipod touch. Even at that they would still have to find this app or have some knowledge on it to try to obtain this app. Also anyone has access to a public library, you don't even need a library card, to sit down and read a book on the constitution, laws and rights of citizens (including non-citizens), and other writings on important court cases. This app in no way shape or form, is a hand book for criminals to perform any acts of crime(s). Nor does it directly inform terrorist how perform acts of terror, or teach them how to get away with it. So whoever is dumb enough to belive that this app might help assist in future acts of crime, terror, or any type of illageal activites, is a retard.
A little rough around the edges By: Nadeem Vaidya - Feb 11, 2009 Version: 1.3 Excellent information. Always good to have a reminder of our rights even though we hope to never be in a situation like those depicted in the app.
The ui is a little inconsistent and the main section could be patterned a little more on the greatest hits section.
I'm not exactly sure what other reviewers are referring to in their racist rants but I don't see anything here that is beneficial for any one group. The only thing that this app does is remind us of our rights of due process.
GOP R DUNCES By: skunknuts - Oct 11, 2009 Version: 1.6 Good overview of one's rights. I have to respond to some of the lame and reflexively reactionary hatred of the ACLU. It's so clear that these ditto-head sheeple are some of the most arrogant and ignorant simpletons in the history of laughable hypocrits. These people are the first to bellow 'USA #1,' but they are ignorant to the actual rights and ideals that differentiate America. They know as much about the constitution as they do about the differences and definitions of fascism, Nazism, socialism, Marxism, etc. These fair-weather fans loved to call others unpatriotic, yet loudly cheer at the US losing an Olympic bid, heckle the Commander in Chief for winning a Noble Prize, and, generally have hatred for the real ideals that have made America great. As annoying as they are, I hope they keep it up, because the let-down at learning that they over guess the size of their minority, even more than they overguess the size of their intelligence will be epic. That is the downside of living in a bubble of delusional ignorance. I still remember many in this comical fringe group proclaiming, right up til election eve, that the media was lying and McCain would be victorious. These people should seriously all move to kansas and secede. For all their whining, blue states pay way more in taxes, proportionally, and get back less, as it is necessary to help support the states full of ungrateful knuckle-dragging yokels. I would love to live in a more advanced and harmonious country that would exist without these neanderthals.

THIS Cop doesn't have a problem with it. By: Road Trip Harry - Sep 12, 2009 Version: 1.6 I am recently retired after 30 years in law enforcement, starting at the bottom and ending as a police executive.
The information presented is about 90% accurate. But you can't expect 100% when trying to summarize complex issues. It is a general guide, not a law degree. Try summarizing baseball in as many lines and you will see how hard it is.
Two glaring examples. First, a warrant is not ALWAYS required to enter or even search your home. But the exceptions are complicated. Simply following the advice given to cooperate will address the immediate problems in case of exceptions - lawyers can sort it out later.
Second, contrary to what is stated, and contrary to what you see on TV, cops do NOT have to advise you of your rights when they arrest you. The requirement applies if they intend to interrogate you. I have arrested hundreds of people without advising them of rights, because I had no questions to ask. Don't believe me? Look it up for yourself on this app. Go to ACLU 100 hits, look up Miranda V. Arizona. Read the first line, that THEY wrote, out loud.
Many people object to the content regarding ACLU. Sheesh! You never heard of commercials? That info is all separate and you can ignore it if you want. Just go to the free advice.
Caveat - this is for reading in advance. Don't expect to tell a cop during an encounter "Wait a second, you aren't saying or doing anything until I read my iPhone."
Sumtimes flaky, but necessary... By: Drummin' Thumper - Apr 9, 2009 Version: 1.4 I'm not the biggest fan of ACLU--especially, its mindless pursuit of arming the bad guys, while stripping the law-abiding citizen of his power to defend himself (but I digress)--but the idea of a perverse gov't of the majority oppressing anyone (as the history of the US proves it to be fully capable of doing) is entirely unacceptable.
In spite of ACLU's oft-despicable client list, somebody has to challenge the eggheads in DC and any others who would oppress the few and weak.
But, I must say, it is truly an unholy alliance that has ACLU on the side of a gov't that is apparently incapable of interdicting crime, as it continues to ensure that only the lawless--those who will not be governed by law--can carry a gun. If EVERYBODY was armed, we would have a better chance of survival.
It is sumtimes flaky, but ACLU is necessary...and this is an excellent app.
