Good app, but could be better.

Not THAT good.

Have used Things for a while on the Touch, and the Beta version of the desktop. Suddenly the desktop end goes to "Read only" mode, pay up time! Ouch! Nearly $100 bucks NZ? NO WAY. It just ain't THAT good. Cultured Code just handed their opposition a great advantage. If you don't need the desktop WiFi try Nubi Do. As good or better, and waaay cheaper. Maybe that is why it is suddenly tumbling down the Top Apps list.

Things alright!
By: Micazu - 20-Jul-2008

* * * It took a moment to learn the secrets of the app, but in the end, it turned out to be very comfortable and indisbensable sidekick.

Read the book, too

The app is great. The desktop version is even better, and they integrate and sync very well. I just wanted to mention that you'll get the most out of using Things if you read "Getting Things Done" by David Allen. This software is designed to work with they system, although they don't make it explicit. But it's a great tool even without that book.

Great app for what it does - huge potential on the way; Mac + iPhone app
By: iEarly Adopter V.Gen Y - 15-Feb-2011

Me: I manage 3 business projects that all require daily reevaluation and updates to tasks. I have goals that shift in importance and due date. I need to stay on top of my tasks quite diligently or I will quickly be overrun.Prior to Things: My task management solution was previously iCal. It did enough to ensure that deadlines were met (meetings and, or, tasks) and that the deadline info synced wirelessly (and easily) over 3G AND wifi to the MobileMe cloud. This meant that updating across my iPhone, MacBook Pro and iPad was flawless. The problem with iCal and the ToDo list app on iPhone/Mac was that the detail of each task was difficult to structure and organize. It was too general, and I found it difficult to organize my various tasks - as in, relate/group each one back to a higher level project for example. I also did not find it easy to work out how to use the ToDo notes effectively on iPhone/iPad compared to Mac. I ended up keeping a word document with headings for each project and subheadings for each task in the best 'order' (chronological, importance etc) that I could manage. This meant daily reviewing of the various tasks and reshuffling as needed. As overlap of due dates and project importance became more of an issue I realized that (without a PA) I needed to get more efficient with my time management.I spent a few hours researching so-called 'GTD apps' and kept finding "Things" to be rated highest. I chose to buy it for the following specific reasons reported on blogs/reviews/their website- vertical task management flexibility (major project list)- horizontal/lateral/breadth of task management flexibility (task areas within each project)- wireless syncing across devices- iPad app available- ability to input increased level of detail relating to each task (eg invitees, 'tags') to associate it with a project OR an "Area of Responsibility"- syncing with iCal- can email 'teammates' with info relating to their individual task from inside the app (whether they have the app or not)Detailed application of "Things": It has done the job of organizing my projects and individual tasks into various categories and filters that enable easier viewing/organization of what needs to be done now, tomorrow, soon etc. My only issue on this aspect is that they are still building the ability to have increased depth in each task/ToDo that is under a higher level project. For eg, "Things" does not allow for the following; Business A is a (high level) 'project', one 'task' is to build the website, then within that task there are multiple phases/tasks/ToDo's that need to be noted (like design and testing) with various people involved in each task. That is too broad/lateral. The way to manage this in "Things" that I have found so far is to create tags like 'Business A' then make each task (like ('build website') a 'project' - then add levels of importance, due dates etc to filter and organize more vertically."Things" apparently syncs most easily via a wireless network that all devices are connected to (not over 3G - they're developing/testing a "cloud syncing solution" to be rolled out mid 2011). Once "Things" is open on each device the app (Mac/iPhone/iPad) automatically does it seamlessly. Bottom line: I color code my shirts, stack my shoes in their boxes (with descriptions on each box), and I am a neat freak. If that sounds like you then this app is perfect. There are a huge number of ways to organize your tasks and ToDo notes (just think of more complicated 'tasks' as 'projects' and it will work perfectly). The syncing works fine for me as all my devices are on the same wifi network anyway. The increased 'horizontal/lateral' functionality will be great once they finish it - but not holding my breath as the app is great the way it is. It syncs with iCal well (so no need to try to manage two diaries/task lists).Suggested usage: school/university students, managers, party planners, holiday planners, can all make great use of this. I bet that you won't miss/forget any tasks once you get it. The iPhone app is great but I found the Mac program/app even better. It's pricey but works even better than iPhone app for managing larger/more complicated projects and working in with iCal/syncing. The iPhone app works well on the iPad, no need to buy both. Developer should offer a discount for buying two or all three...but doesn't apparently

Things
By: usciolu - 15-Aug-2010
Version: 1.6

The power lies in its simplicity
By: sturzeroebi - 19-Jul-2010

Very useful app, fast and well organized. Particularly powerful together with its desktop counterpart. To the developers: Thanks and stick to the simplicity, don't cram it with fancy, yet useless features.

Very Bad Things
By: edid09 - 08-Feb-2009
Version: 1.3.1
I don't konw what the other reviewers were playing with... but, first Things deleted all my iCal to do's. Then, when I stopped that and got Things going it did other weird things when syncing. The last straw was when it synced one time and deleted (again) most of my to do's and shoved others in places I hadn't specified. Besides, if you need multiple lists, spaces and places for what should be a simple list of to do's then, in the immortal words of 'Withnail and I',..."we are indeed drifting into the arena of the unwell." I deleted my paid copy of Things and all the sorting from list to list and place to space and just got on with doing what I had to do.

Synchronisation could be better, really.

Good app, quick and easy to use, but the synchro technology is lagging behind, really - especially if you always switch between your mobile and your laptop !Corrected, it could give the app a 5 stars !

Hübsch, aber nicht fertig.
By: phewqwersg - 15.02.2011
Version: 1.7.1

By: DeerField_AOW - 14-Dec-2008
