Description:

★★ Named one of the best 35 iPhone apps of 2009 (so far) on TechCrunch! ★★
This is the FREE HeyWAY location service application, which includes advertisements. A Pro version is also available that offers an ad-free experience and the additional ability to attach a custom short message to location updates and requests.
Hey Where Are You, or HeyWAY, is a new location service that lets you keep track of where friends, family and colleagues are. Send alerts with your current location to your followers, or send "Hey, Where Are You?" alerts requesting their location.
Unlike other services such as Google Latitude, HeyWAY uses Apple's new Push Notification Service, so notifications of your friends' location, and your requests for their location, are delivered even when the application is not running.
HeyWAY is perfect for keeping in touch with:
✓ Your spouse or partner: is he still at work? Nearly home? At the pub? Get back his actual location.
✓ Teenage children: rest easier by having them check in with their actual location when they're out late. Easier and more reliable than assurances sent over SMS, and much less intrusive than voice calls.
✓ Field employees or colleagues: get a quick fix on delivery drivers, sales associates or other field employees or colleagues who are constantly on the move.
HeyWAY strictly guards your privacy: you must individually authorize others to see your location, and location updates are sent only when you specifically choose. Note that it is not possible to track another HeyWAY user without them choosing to send you a location update.
HeyWAY logs location updates received from people you are following so you can refer back to each person's past whereabouts. All locations are displayed on embedded maps, which are fully navigable using familiar panning and zooming controls.
HeyWAY is available for iPod Touch devices and the original iPhone, but please be aware that location fixes are less accurate using these devices, since they do not include GPS. iPod Touch devices may not be able to produce a location fix at all in many areas. This is a hardware limitation.
Some notes in response to common customer questions:
✓ A commonly-requested feature is the ability to authorize others to track your location without requiring an alert or confirmation. Unfortunately, the current iPhone system software doesn't support such a feature, since third-party applications may not run in the background, or respond to Push Notifications without explicit user action. This feature will be added if and when Apple lifts this limitation.
✓ The location detected by HeyWAY is no more or less precise than any other iPhone application; detecting your location is performed by your device's Apple-provided system software, not the application.

Greatsending GPS locations...  rating of Hey Where Are You : Location Service
By: Volt-o-Meter FTW - Oct 31, 2009
Version: 1.8
...-handedAlthough it does have that creepy stalker-lite™ aspect to it, it's cool to sonar-pingsomebody to see where they're at -- especially if you're planning to meet up. You can use other apps like Let'sMeet or HereIAm, or take ascreenshot of your Googlemaps but that still involves sending it thruemail and not everyone has Push or Notify enabled for their iPhonemail and then you still have to text them to tell them to check theirmail -- definitely not a goodidea to do while drivingEven with MMS messages, you'll need to snapshot a screen, create the MMS and then attach it to the MMS message, and then go back to the Camera Roll and delete it. With HeyWAY, you can send or request location info in about 5-7 steps. The only typing would be if you had Pro.  This app pops up a messagebox to let you know someone has sent their location or is requestingyours. The app logs store previously received locations by date and you can event sort of leave a "breadcrumb" trail on your friend's. Since HeyWAY is freeforever, i didn't see any need to get Pro but not having the ability to attach a quickcomment finally got to me... There's really no need to get Pro unless you absolutely want to include a brief space-limited text message. Also, Pro seemingly imported my settings and Followers automatically -- although I haven't obviously deleted the free one yet. If u buy pro b4 testing the free 1 then u r a dumbass.

My wife and I use this all the time and love it. Sometimes it is better to show where you are with a HeyWAY notification than to place a call or text. Plus there are those occasions where it is perfect to get a way point to navigate to. We have a handful of other contacts who use HeyWAY and it almost becomes a game to figure out where they are and what they are doing when the notification comes in. You know an app has become a favorite when you start using "HeyWAY" as a verb.

Nice little app that is nearly perfect.  rating of Hey Where Are You : Location Service

One thing I like about this is the gentle 'whoop' that lets you know someone has sent you there whereabouts whether the app is loaded or not. I tried it out on holliday and it located me within metres of where I was - most times it was spot on with the mapping. One key thing I would like to see in an update that would make the world of difference is a larger google map or a one liner bit of text to attach with the name of the location and country. E.g. if camping, knowing your brother is on a patch of green somewhere in the world is not really helpful nor fun!! Especially when scrolling brings up just more green.

Your recent update with the larger map was right on and just what we needed. My entire family uses this daily to keep track of ourselves. The only suggestion I have is to zoom out when your on the highway. Problem is that your GPS location is changing so fast, its almost impossible to figure out where you are. It needs to slow down which you can do by zooming out. Other than that, love the App, love the sonar sound. Very cool

Useful but a tad clunky UX  rating of Hey Where Are You : Location Service
By: Serendipityseeker - Sep 24, 2009
Version: 1.7
I use this daily with my girlfriend so we can ping each other with our locations, thereby saving cell minutes and SMS typing. Having been a very heavy user of HeyWay for a while, I see where the app needs an interaction design overhaul. All the right funtionality is there and the service is highly functional and reliable so it's an amazing app already. Excellence opportunities: 1) make this one task smooth using the following pseudocode: Send to John my location. This is my 99% scenario, I seldom need to send my location to everybody on my approval list, which is the current default. Remember who I sent my location to last, it's probably who I need to send my location to next. 2) reply to a received location with my location. There is no facility to reply but that is my 99% need after receiving a location and viewing it. It's my way of saying that I got the message. 3) view my received locations as a list with the most recently received on top. Now, after unlocking my phone and launching the app, I have to dig through each one of my contacts to see who sent it and it's a pain. I need to see it like a date sorted inbox with the unread one on top. I have found the free app to already be priceless in spite of the currently clunky interaction model, just because it's been so fantastically useful in my daily life. So 4 stars for a great app, to be upgraded to 5 stars when the workflow gets smoothed out.

Great use of 3.0 features and great app overall  rating of Hey Where Are You : Location Service
By: TheSned - Sep 17, 2009
Version: 1.7
As a developer, I love to see apps using the new features like Push Notifications, Peer to Peer, and embedded Maps. This is a neat little app to find out where all your friends and family are. I would love to see a "View in Maps" button or functionality. Also, it would be cool to be able to see multiple pins on the map for different updates. It would also be nice to be able to send text with an update.
To all who are complaining about the ability to have automatic updates without the other person's interaction: it is not possible based on Apple's limitations. Since HeyWAY can't run in the background, it uses Push Notifications, which requires the other person to actually click a button to launch the app when it is closed.

My friends and I use this app all the time to let each other know if we are close to arriving somewhere or just hanging out somewhere. My partner uses it to let me know when he's on his way home from work ....it's extremley easy to use and very reliable. These people complaining about needing to get authorized to view a location are just people who want to spy on others....and there are plenty of apps that you can get for that. This one is for friends and family to alert each other to there whereabouts, period....and it does it well .

Love this app  rating of Hey Where Are You : Location Service

This is a very useful app, and it's the best of its type in the app store. I love that it lets me push my location to my wife or request hers. I do agree that there shouldn't have to be a final confirmation prompt at the end--obviously I want to send/receive the location info if I am at that point. Please eliminate that final annoying time when we have to press one more button. But otherwise, I love this app and we use it all the time. Thanks!

Great but found bug  rating of Hey Where Are You : Location Service
By: TrailSeeker - Jul 7, 2009
Version: 1.5
When I generate an email the email says "Gail" is using heyway. But my name is not Gail nor is it the name I put in the app. Also if you go genrate a 2nd email to invite others the name changes to "chris". Please fix. My guess is those are the 2 names of the developers and it was hardcoded and left in there. Feature request allow the option to get a persons location without there request mainly for the same reasons others have mentioned making sure my kids are ok Other than that this is a great app.

Hey!!! This was MY idea!!!   rating of Hey Where Are You : Location Service

I just started developing apps and this is one I was going to take a shot at when 3.0 hit the bricks... You beat me to it!!!  This is a great app so far. I won't repeat what everyone else has been saying, but I do have one 'original' thought... If you have multiple phones on a single account, the 'primary' should be able to get 'automatic' location info from any of the other phones without requiring their permission (I pay the bill!!). I have two teenage girls with iPhone 3Gs who are very pretty and very smart (honor students). Get my drift? I would like to pin-point their location immediately, not 20 minutes later when they feel it's cool to let dad know where they are! Too much 'lag-time' dudes! Anyone with 'normal' kids knows what I mean! What if the phone is stolen, or they are in a 'situation' where they CANNOT respond to the push message? Just my thoughts as a dad who loves his baby-girls! Again, this is a FANTASTIC app! This would get $5-$10 easy!!! Now... STOP READING THIS AND GO FINISH THE DARN THING!!! 

Awesome App!  rating of Hey Where Are You : Location Service

This app is really, really cool and very worth downloading. It's pretty darn accurate too. One suggestion I would like to suggest to the developers is to make it possible to hit ignore when a new location comes in instead of having to go to the app every single time. Sometimes you're in the middle of something else on another screen and just wish to view the new location in a few minutes instead of that moment. Still worth the download and I think that's an easy update to add. Thanks for the great app!

Great App!  rating of Hey Where Are You : Location Service
By: Bcellreceptor - Jun 20, 2009

The app works really well. Push notifications come almost instantly! Super easy to set up and use (bluetooth pairing worked great). I anticipate this being really useful to find friends in a crowded park, street fair, outdoor concert, etc.
A couple of additions that would be nice:
-ability to add a short note with the position you send.
-ability to open someone's position in google maps. This is essential if you want to use the position to get directions, etc.
Other users said they would like a program that can email their position to friends. Google Maps already does this. It will send email with a Google Map link to your current position. Push notifications, in this program, put it in a completely different ballpark!

Useful App  rating of Hey Where Are You : Location Service

This is a useful app. My only gripe is that turning on "Notifications" on the phone just drains the battery too quickly. This is not a fault of the app, but rather Apple's design issue.
A suggestion would be to be able to send and receive location updates via SMS and have Notifications switched off to save battery until Apple resolves the battery drain issue.
Please enable sending and receiving updates via SMS in your next release.

Pretty good but needs features...  rating of Hey Where Are You : Location Service
By: frysteen - 01-Jul-2009

Need to be able to view locations that you have sent to others (your own location is not tracked) Need to he able to "get directions" to someone once they send you their location - or at the very least, be able to open their location in to the maps app. Need to he able to choose which type of map you want to use in the application... Satelite view can be slow and use up too much data when on 3g Apart from that, I do quite enjoy it and think it has some great potential

Kudos, and Feature Request please  rating of Hey Where Are You : Location Service
By: Torin Walker - 16-Jul-2009

Excellent application. The interface is very fast, well designed, to the point with no extra fluff, and notifications allow it to operate while you run other apps. I have recommended this to everyone I know.
Constantly having to acknowledge each request however is a pain. I would like to see Follower Profiles updated with settings that permit me to individually configure event acknowledgements. I would like for people I trust to receive my location automatically, without prompting me each time. Furthermore, I also want at times to simply be notified that my location was requested (and by whom), and other times, to have them handled silently. For example, the profile could have two settings: The first, "Send Location Automatically" allows one to configure whether that profile should receive one's location without prompting for permission each time. The second setting, "Notify Me Of Each Request", determines whether one should receive a dialog indicating the request. Last, but not least, when notifications are silent (no dialog) - or better, in all cases regardless of the aforementioned settings, the latest event request is recorded in the user's profile details in case one should wish to inquire.
Good job, Niftybrick guys. Keep up the good work.

Potential, but...  rating of Hey Where Are You : Location Service

Ok, so the idea behind this is pretty cool, and I really like how it uses the new ability to use google maps within the app itself, but I forsee a small issue, google. Why google you ask? Well as far as I know, google is gonna have lattitude on the iPhone soon and I'm pretty sure it'll be better and more useful than this app. Either way, still pretty cool and a good start to showing off some if the new features in 3.0.

great application  rating of Hey Where Are You : Location Service
By: Ando91 - 29-Oct-2009

I like the fact that I can send my position to people as well as see where they are at the same time. The only thing I would really like to see in this application is the ability to manually find and pinpoint your position instead of hafting to rely on the GPS. Where I live the reception isn’t great and often I have a position circle radius of around 1 km as well as being located another 5 or 6 km away from where I actually am. If we had the choice to use the GPS or to manually pinpoint our position then people can send much more accurate positions to fellow heyway users.

Fantastic!  rating of Hey Where Are You : Location Service

HeyWAY is great, me and all my friends use it all the time. I'm just about to buy the Pro version as it hardly costs anything and I love the idea of being able to choose a custom worded notification (free messages to friends, anyone). HeyWAY should be shown on the apple iPhone official ads. I would give the app five stars were it able to generate text invitations or merely show the private code that can be copied and pasted (in 3.0) for use in facebook, Twitter etc! :)

Great App, why the new rubbish icon??  rating of Hey Where Are You : Location Service
By: domyates - 29-Jul-2009
Version: 1.5
I use this app quite a few times a day and it's great. I would like to see perhaps the addition of a text feature to accompany the update and even give the app access to your address book so when you want to invite someone it doesn't close the app down and open mail, it just emails them from within the app. Maybe even attaching pictures to your location updates and tagging them to flickr et al? Also As I'm sure others would agree I font like the new icon. The old one was a lot better and classier. The new one looks like the Safari icon and not as nice. Please go back tithe old one. With the above implimented I'd be happy to pay for the premium version! Not much though guys!! Thanks.
