Reviews:
Clean interface, good receptions but small problems By: anzensam - Sep 8, 2009 Version: 1.2 Interface is great, the connection to skype network is excellent where I travelled in Malaysia and Hong Kong. The biggest problem I had was when talking on the phone, my face would touch the mute button or speaker button by mistake. Skype should make the screen dark when someone puts the phone to the face, like the regular phone application does. Another very important feature would be to add bluetooth support. Otherwise, the connection through skype app is much much better than Fring or Nimbuzz! It is actually usable!
GET IT!!! By: dino62960 - Apr 1, 2009 Version: 1.0.1 I don't know what everyones problem is on the crashing problem, they must have jail broken phones. I have not had one crash yet. I just talked to a collegue of mine in South Africa for over an hour and it works perfectly fine, exactly what it is supposed to do. If you use skype you should definitely get this app. As soon as they get it to work for 3G then it will be perfect. Hope this helps you decide.
WORKS FLAWLESSLY! By: fotonomad - Mar 31, 2009 Version: 1.0.1 I installed Skype this morning and I tried most of its features right away. The initial wave of reactions on the web seemed to be that the App was crashing and dropping calls. But soon thereafter users started reporting that those problems were due to the fact that they were using jailbroken iPhones. SO, I have to say it, loud and clear, this App is working FLAWLESSLY for me, on a first generation iPhone with the latest firmware. I called a friend in Paris, from the US, and we had a 30 minute chat with no problems. Perfect sound for both of us (I called his Skype account, he was using his computer). I also used the chat feature, which seemed to work over EDGE too. Calls only work over WiFi. The UI is great, just like any other iPod interface or similar. I am very, very pleased. I hope in the future we'll get video capabilities, which for me is very important as I have family and friends abroad. Give this App a try if you're a regular Skype user, it works very well.
Great App... just needs a few tweaks. By: Veggiewash - 14-Apr-2009 Version: 1.0.2 Update: Still love it, still would like to see the below added and one more thing... *specific* identification of being on iPhone rather than a vague phrase--- or even an icon change like when you have call forwarding turned on.
Old review: I've phoned the states when on wifi many times now and have IM'd on the train/bus. It's great. There's a slight delay in writing a text and seeing it though. Kinda weird. Would love to see wallpaper options too in a later upgrade. Lastly, I find that when I'm multiple chat sesions and inside one chat, the number badge doesn't update to say someone else has left a mesg for me too, so I keep having to back out of the application. The only time I see it update is when I'm in another menu.... i.e. my info, or contacts. Am I missing something as I can't find a setting for it to let me know.. your screen shots imply that when in a chat the number badge shows a pending chat but I've yet to experience this yet.. 3G or wifi. Otherwise, I love it! And the price is GREAT!
Must Have App Of All Time By: Sixstring78 - 10-Sep-2009 Version: 1.2.1 With so many WiFi spots across North America now, I'll never really have to use my minutes up on my plan or pay Rogers the ridiculous long distance fees any more. Goodbye My5, hello MyContinent! I signed up for the yearly subscription to the North American plan and the voice quality is excellent! Gotta love free long distance wherever I go now! If you don't have this app, get it!! Most useful app ever made for the iPhone by far!
Now hang on a minute... By: Tubuliferous - Apr 3, 2009 Version: 1.0.1 I've seen a lot of negative comments from reviewers who bemoaned Skype's incessant crashing. I wonder how many of you who are having stability issues are NOT using a jailbroken device? Yes, Skype crashes regularly on jailbroken iPhones and iPod touches. However, it's quite stable on the official firmware. At least, that's been my experience. The Skype development team is not obligated to create software that functions on unofficial firmwares. This application has thusly received a lot of undue criticism. Henceforth, if reviewers are commenting on stability issues, it will be helpful if they also state whether or not they are using hacked firmware.
People should really learn about a product before writing such negative reviews. By: Explorer II - 12-Apr-2009 Version: 1.0.1 This app is only limited by the iPhone and phone service providers. It's very easy for this app to work and sound great on 3g, but phone service providers won't let that happen. It's also very easy for this app to receive calls in any mode, but having it run in the background absolutely chews your battery and you won't be able to use your phone. This app is designed to be used as a "sign in" system from a wifi spot - the same as you would a PC. Sound quality you can judge for yourself, but it's much better than the other 3 voip apps I have used on the Iphone. With the current limitations put on the developers, they did a great job - I give it a 9/10 This is also ver: 1.0.1 so things will only get better. Tip: If you are waiting to recieve a skype call to your iPhone, open the app then press the sleep/wake button (top of phone) this will keep the app running - but remember it will run down the battery.
Come on people! By: Spencetheman - May 2, 2009 Version: 1.0.3 Quit giving skype bad reviews for stuff they have no control over. Like a one star review cuz it can't work in the background (uh hello, no apps are allowed to run in the background, other than iTunes, mail, etc) skype can't change that even if they wanted to.
2. One star reviews because it only works on wifi, not on 3g. Do you think that it was skypes decision? Of course not, att&t and apple are the ones that won't allow it. Did skype ever promise you calls over 3g? No, so accept the fact that for now it won't work.
Now When skype Works poorly (the functionality that it is made to have) it deserves a poor review. I myself gave it a poor review untill the last update when it finally solved my crashing issues. But crashing is something they have the control to fix.
If you want to whine and moan about stuff that apple and AT&T are restricting, take it up with them, but don't make skype look bad for crap they can't control.
YAY!!!! By: Itotezluvmynewituch - Apr 2, 2009 Version: 1.0.1 I have been looking FOREVER for a decent, "Skype" app. Here it is! It works perfectly!
1. You have to have Wi-Fi on the iTouch for it to work.
2. If you want to call people on Skype through their SkypeName, you need to buy pods that have a microphone in them.
3. Without the pods, you can still TypeChat!
This is the best EVA! Get it immediatley while it's free!
(Watch...they're probably gonna "up" the price to like, $4.00!)
Get it now. Works perfectly and never crashes my 16GB iTouch, Vsn. 2.2.
Get it now!
(THIS IS NOT AN APRIL FOOLS DAY JOKE MSG...swear. This application really works!)
Works great By: jackakerouac - Apr 11, 2009 Version: 1.0.1 Originally crashed at the splash screen, but after updating to 2.2.1, the app works flawlessly. Sound quality is much better than fring to the point where a friend overseas was able to spot the difference immediately.
I'll admit, my original review was based on an install on a jailbroken iPhone. After updating to 2.2.1, I realize I rarely used the jailbreak apps and did not jailbreak again. My phone remains unlocked due to my being an expat and there being no legit iPhone sales in China.

Not ready By: Allerley - Mar 31, 2009 Version: 1.0.1 Update:
Installed the new mobilesubstrate released by saurik in cydia and all is well. Just made my first call to a friend in Slovenia great call quality and worked fine until a text message hung up skype :-)
Original post:
This app is crashing back to springboard eveytime I tap on the login section. Looks like thee us a conflict somewhere as it's still happening after a fresh reboot
Very disapponted :(
Brilliant and nice design! By: MisSharkiss - 31-Mar-2009 Version: 1.0.1 I am very happy that Skype is finally available and it is Free as on the computer. Tested the sound quality and it is a thousand times better than Skype on Fringe. And even though it is only possible to make calls through Wifi, I could chat through 3g which is great as I have a lot of friends living abroad, so it is very handy. I like the user friendly design as well. The only issue I have is that you can't stay logged on, but I suppose it is not Skypes fault, but Apple won't let non apple applications run on the background. And Japanese smileys work as you can see...
It's great... only if you know skype By: Bittubhai - 2-Oct-2009 Version: 1.2.2 So... they say, a bad workman always quarrels with his tools ! And so are the people leaving wrong feedback for an excellent application like this one. They just do not know Skype's working, and expect a bit too much from skype that it will allow incoming calls, or will allow to make calls to anyone. NO!!!
If you've used skype on your computer and know it's functioning then this application is for you. Skype always charged CAD 2.95 monthly for unlimited calls to US / Canada. If you used it or other skype to skype free calls using computer with a microphone and headset, you will love this application on your iPhone. It eliminates headphone/ microphone/ computer and functionality comes all in your iPhone, just like you are talking over phone.
The only concern is, that it does not allow talk over 3G network, and that is understandable because of the laws and contracts with your service provider, who will be in big loss if calling to other numbers using 3G network is permitted. So, for now it is Wi-Fi connection talking only. Only text-chat is available on 3G network and even that is not too bad.
Gear up guys... Get this free application and give your laptop some rest. Good day!
It does work, ignore the people with jacked up devices. By: mshayne777 - Apr 2, 2009 Version: 1.0.1 I don't know why some people are giving this such a bad review. Everyone who downloads apps knows that you have to restart your device to get them to work properly sometimes. It works, so maybe it's your iPod or iPhone. T@rget sells a philips iPhone microphone that works perfect for the iPod touch 2g. I was able to talk to one person using voice and do text chat at the same time. There was no delay and no interruptions. Skype is awesome. Ignore the retards who can't use 2 of the simplist electronic devices ever invented. If it doesn't work... RESTART!!!
Excellent work!... Suggestions though... By: IamSpankie - Apr 2, 2009 Version: 1.0.1 This is by far the easiest and best VOIP app available. Even better than the windows mobile version.
It may be too early to think about an update since Skype for iPhone just came out today, but it would be nice to see video calling for people that have cameras on their computers. (and, better yet, their iPhone!)
With the iPhone 3.0 software that is coming out, push notifications for the chat sessions will make it a definite plus.
Also integrating the IM with your iPhone phone number so that you can have an option that when you're offline, have your IMs or chat session forwarded to you in the form of a text or email message. And vice versa. That way you can reply to it. Yahoo IM and others do it.
Updated (for all the negative reviews):
You have a jailbroken iPhone? Apps on the App Store were never meant for a jailbroken iPhone.
If you see free when you download, it's because it's a FREE download! Doesn't mean you call landlines for free. Get people to download Skype on windows computers and mobile devices and you will see the value in it even if you don't happen to travel overseas.
And about the WiFi thing, it was stated in the description. You're marking off stars for not able to call on 3G? You are a nut!
App crashes? Why do you have a problem and people that know of these things don't? Don't you normally have to reboot your computer when you download and install something? Same thing goes with cellphones nowadays. iPhone is no exception. If it was the app, dont you think every single person who downloaded this app would have the same problem! Your iPhone is the issue.
Reboot (I don't mean power off) and you will be ok. That failed? Oh then go do do a restore through iTunes! Do a little troubleshooting first before you blame the app! People are giving it 5 stars for a reason!
THE SKYPE APP IS A DEFINITE 5 STARS!
Seems great so far By: decrease - Mar 31, 2009 Version: 1.0.1 I like better than FRING. When i use fring it logs me into all my IM contacts and it is hard for me to tell which contacts are from my address book, instant message contacts and skype. With this app I can see all my skype contacts in one view and then choose my contact address book in another view. It also shows how much skype credit i have and it seemed like the few test phone calls i made were a little clearer and faster. Thanks skype for this app... long over due :) no crashes or problems for me.
I'm so impressed! By: Seamlessly Connected!!! - 11-Apr-2009 Version: 1.0.1 I've been using 3rd party voip apps for the iPhone for many months now and they've been very hit and miss. However, this is cartainly not the case with Skype.
It works well, is stable and call quality is amazing. My partner recently moved to the UK and ever since contact was made difficult with high call costs. Skype to skype has fixed this. Also love being able to use skype to call mobiles and landlines, although skype to mobile calls aren't much cheaper than carrier costs per/min. Can't wait until Apple and carriers remove 3G calling restrictions !
Must have application, hope 3.0 push notifications bring to the table some sort of "always available" connection with skype. Would work perfectly with 3G calling !!!
Download today
Take your complaints elsewhere By: OneShow - 09-Apr-2009 Version: 1.0.1 Finally Skype have released their own App. No more Fring and, even better, no more Truphone!
They have not charged for it. I would have been willing on shelling out a few dollars for it. And it works excellently.
What I don't get is people that write that it is constantly crashing. If 600 out of the 650 reviews don't mention anything about crashing wouldn't you start to think that the problem was at YOUR end. Update your firmware, check for updates etc. It works perfectly for me with just the one drop out while in Malaysia but that was more to do with the internet connection there.
This whole 3G VOIP argument is getting boring. You can't tell me that Skype wouldn't want to make it happen and most likely have a version sitting on the shelf waiting for the day that they may get the go ahead. Direct the 3G critisism towards your mobile carrier. They are the ones preventing it!
Well done Skype!
all hail By: core logo - 10-Oct-2009 Version: 1.2.2 this app is a godsend. I keep a pay as you go cell for absolute emergencies, and use my iPod touch with skype as my everyday phone. i save $100 a month and forego the brain tumor. not having wifi all the time is an upside! who needs to be attached to a cell phone 24/7? not me skippy. skype and the ipod touch are each outstanding in their own right, but combined they are one of the greatest inventions of the 21st century. thanks for saving me from being another victim of the telecom behemoths.
It's good. By: Adz81 - 08-Apr-2009 Version: 1.0.1 To all the people complaining, build a bridge. It's free to make Skype to Skype calls. Do you really think your carriers would be happy if it was free to mobile and landlines. The call costs to normal numbers are very good. Just txt the person you wanna talk to tell them to start Skype. I must admit it drops a bit through the day at peek times but it's flawless at night. And no 3G. It's not their fault 3G is too slow to handle the load required. Cause you do need a strong signil. Good work Skype.
