I have used the web version of Trip Advisor for a long time which has also saved my butt when travelling from different countries and needed a place to stay last minute. So finding this "local picks" app was pretty cool when I found it. Too bad it doesn't do hotels and what not as well or other services and just local places to eat. Anyway, when I found this, the reviews ripped it apart and I was swayed from ever downloading this. I mean there is YELP, WHRRL, Yellow pages, etc out there, why would I install an app that was 1 to 2 stars the most.
Needless to say, after a few days, I have seen on a blog that TripAdvisor has responded to the feedbacks and released an updated version. Immediately, still hesitantly downloaded it.
I MUST SAY, WOW! I can't compare it to the old but I think it's safe to say that it can now deserve higher stars. It even found a college local pick which is not even a place but a bunch of trucks that are gathered at a spot we call the "Grease Trucks"

This is one of the only apps that you can specify a different location other than the place that you are currently. Great if you want to plan where to eat ahead of time. It works for me in London, it may not pick up all the restaurants but at least it gives you an idea. I also like the sort by options (popularity, price, distance) great if you want to pick up a cheap eat. The restaurant type of cuisine is also listed, seems like a simple idea but not every app has it. It also links up to reviews online. And it is FREE!

Can filter restaurants by distance from you (uses gps), price per meal and how many stars out of 5. Can also read in depth reviews of each restaurant from users. I tried it at 2 rest. And it was right on! My city has over 1600 rest. In their database. Speed was fast on thurs before 3g launch. Maybe reported speed problems are due to servers being slammed? Best app I have found so far and has already saved me money.

Pros: I've found a handful of great hole-in-the wall restaurants that I probably would never have known about. The reviews are helpful. Free!
Cons: I've had a handful of crashes, and some of the listings have the wrong addresses and/or are no longer in business.
Definitely worth downloading and trying. Comes in handy on a trip for finding good, healthy, cheap eats (found an amazing taqueria and Thai place in SoCal). I would double-check places to verify location and whether they're still around BEFORE taking a long drive, or going out of your way at all.

I used it all last week while I was gone on vacation! In Cody, Wy we ate at the #1 and it didn't let us down! Then off to Jackson Hole, Wy we ate at another top rate place, it was the best steak we have ever eaten! I have always used tripadvisor and it has yet to let me down!

Simple yet very effective app from one of my favorite sites: tripadvisor.com. I use it on my itouch and it's great within wifi coverage. (Don't know how those who criticize it expect it to give up to date info unless it can get online each time! Duh!) I will give it a good test this week in Vienna, Austria! So far, I love it
