Description:
“There are a few apps that aim to help you navigate public transport in the UK, but this one stands head and shoulders above the rest.” - iPod User magazine “Our favourite feature is Next train home that looks up your nearest station and checks the time of the next train you can catch to your home station. ****” - MacFormat magazine National Rail Enquiries provides complete journey planning for journeys across the UK National Rail network and live departure information for all National Rail stations in the UK. This is an official application from National Rail Enquiries, with fully-licensed and accurate real-time information. FEATURES: - Powerful journey planner for single or return journeys across the UK National Rail network, with departure platform information (where available). - If you’re searching for trains today, you’ll be told about any delays or cancellations to your chosen trains and given the option to find alternative journeys. - Live departures and arrivals at all National Rail stations in the UK, with platform information (where available*) and live train progress. - Add multiple stations to the app’s Home Screen for one-touch access to their live departures. Simply choose a station in ‘Live Departures & Arrivals’ and hit ‘Save’ to create a new favourite. - Automatically find your nearest stations or select one of your recently used stations, and then find directions via the iPhone’s Maps application. - The ‘Next Train Home’ feature finds your nearest station and plans your journey home. You can view a full demonstration of the application on YouTube, or at nationalrail.co.uk/iphone . Please note that the live departure and journey planner features require an active mobile network connection when starting a new search, but Journey Planner search results are automatically saved for use when outside of mobile network coverage. * Platform number information is not available for all stations in National Rail Enquiries for iPhone. To find out if a particular station will display platform numbers in the application’s “Live Departures & Arrivals” section, please view that station in the Live Departures and Arrivals section of the nationalrail.co.uk web site. If platform information is displayed on the web site, it will also be displayed in the iPhone application.

Reviews:
Great app By: Fatboytom - 04-Apr-2009 Version: 1.0 So it's a little more expensive than other apps but it's great. Just the practical type of app I hope to be able to use when I got my iPhone.
Have been able to add three favourite stations to it and the tracker function will mean I'll know if I gave to run to the station in the morning so I don't miss my train.
Journey planner function is brilliant and helped me work out my journey tonight so I avoid the rail replacment bus. . Hard to think what else could be added to make this better.
Fab app By: Gillyweb - 19-Sep-2009 Version: 1.2 Many complaints here are about the cost. Bearing in mind the average cost of a rail ticket these days, you would be better off complaining about the price of those. This app takes all the fiddly waiting out of looking up the main web site. Is fast, concise, gives up to date info. Platform numbers is a great help and 'my next train home' is fab. Superb functionality. For constant travellers it's ability to tell you your nearest stations and the best way to get somewhere is super. Well worth the money.
Only bought this so that I could have moan! By: SPF - 04-Apr-2009 Version: 1.0 Worth every penny. Best moan I've had for ages. Seriously, though, I do agree with many of the others in that it is a bit over-priced. But, hey, compared with this country's extortionate rail travel costs, it's nearly a bargain. AND it's less than half the price of my local station's daily car parking charges - courtesy of National Express. To be honest, the app is actually quite slick and is the best of the bunch. I had the free MyRail Lite too. But I didn't expect to get free data in perpetuity. Data providors of any sort have to recoup their investment. You don't get up to date share info free - only the 20 minute delayed stuff. Actually - here's a thought - why don't National Rail provide 20-minute delayed details free too?? Hmmm. Oh.. Just for info: I bought Trains before MyRail Lite came on the scene - and this still works fine. It does the job, but NRE is better.
Excellent App. By: Jfv93 - Aug 3, 2009 Version: 1.1 I used this constantly when I was visiting my family in London to get from my aunt's flat in Wimbledon to Waterloo every single day on South West Trains. I also used it to go to Hampton Court, Kingston, and Gatwick. I highly recommend this application! The screenshots speak for themselves, you can program a home station, view live departures and train progress for any train on the NR network, and use it to check delays. Download it, it will not let you down!
Fantastically useful program By: kev2n - Jul 19, 2009 Version: 1.1 This was recommended by another rail travelling friend. It is easy to use and works very quickly pulling information down. It takes all the hassle out of seeing what the time the next train is and whether there are any delays expected. As it knows where you are in real-time it is also useful to find the nearest station when you are away from home. If you could purchase tickets on-line too that would be brilliant. You could then collect them at the at the station to save time. An essential program for anyone using UK trains.
Excellent By: TheLibertine - 04-Apr-2009 Version: 1.0 I've given it 5 stars because it is an excellent app, that works perfectly for me and added things I didn't know would be so useful.
I personally dont think £5 is expensive at all for an app that I use everyday. People who think it's "eye wateringly expensive" need to get a grip on reality. I'd happily pay more for an app this useful and well written.
It was harsh (and probably illegal) what NR did to myrail light but as an app, it is really very good which is why I gave it 5 stars.
Super Smashing Great By: CheeseyWolf - 18-Sep-2009 Version: 1.2 This app would be excellent value at twice the price. Functionality scores 10/10..I use national rail every day of the week in a non-predictable fashion (due to the nature of my business) and my days of wasting time on empty platforms are gone. It covers every train in the country, shows you exactly where that train is in real time, and stores all your faves, history etc.. perfectly. Wherever you are in UK it works out your nearest station and tells you how quickest to get home by pressing 1 button. I simply don't know what more people could reasonably want from a train app..except for integration with the tube systems in the major cities.Marvellous stuff.
Great app By: Network Norm - 16-Sep-2009 Version: 1.2 Firstly, I fail to see how My Rail Lite was 'so much better' given that it and this app actually shared the same data source so if anything they were exactly the same. From what I understand, National Rail Enquiries didn't actually pull the plug on MRL, they asked the creators of th App to sign up for a licence to use their data, which they refused to do.Yes Timetable data is in the public domain but it also free, via the website. No one is forcing anyone to use the app, if you choose to do so then why shouldn't we pay for the convenience? It's not as if we can't get it elsewhere, eg mobile.nationalrail.co.uk. £5 is less than a couple of cups of coffee yet, despite that we will probably pay over £400 for our iPhones some people resent paying a small of fee. Seems totally daft to me.And no I'm not connected to the rail industry, I'm just a realist.
Great App! By: Andyg89 - 02-Apr-2009 Version: 1.0 So yeah we are all pissed off about MyLite Rail going, but at least we have this to replace it. This does everything it used to do but you can see the locations of each train, has good clear timings of delays, you can set your home station, you can plan jorneys and has a nice finish to the software. So yeah it might cost £4.99 but get over it £4.99 aint that much really, is it!!! It all goes to a good cause, maybe people should spend a little more now and then and the economy won't mess up! Great app if you use trains this is fab! **
Very useful and works well By: Drewberts - 10-Sep-2009 Version: 1.2 I use this app just before I leave the house to make sure the train is running. When the train is running 3 minutes late it tells me. It is accurate in this respect. It has also told me (correctly) that the train is cancelled. This is very important as it allows me to make alternative plans. Planning journeys is very good as it tells me total journey time. This is very important if there is more than one route. I am happy to £4.99 because the information the app provides is worth this one off cost.

This App Should win an award!. By: Nice Nigel - 02-Oct-2009 Version: 1.2 I have bought a number of 'usefull' Apps. A Lot of them waste a lot of your time. And even though people are well aware of the Interface guidelines they often fall short. This little gem however is just a genius Implementation and its what people should be looking to create in an 'usefull' App. The person who wrote this is clearly a traveler on the trains in the UK and knows the torture of standing on a lonely cold train platform waiting for, at the very least some information (that usually never comes). We were all with him standing in the snow last February as the laughable lack of info became annoying. This App would have saved a lot of cold tootsies. There is maybe one small insignificant request. There should be an "Ive been out drinking all night and shouldn't be travelling alone so can someone please wake me-Button"... might need carefully re-wording to fit on a button. As for the Price. A fiver is a little expensive but if I make it to one late running train or save 4 minutes waiting in the cold then it is worth it. Anyway if you can't afford the app you certainly won't be able to afford the train fare!.
Excellent application and well worth the money By: fungke - 02-Apr-2009 Version: 1.0 Firstly, this is a well written and extremely useful application, unlike most of the rubbish on the app store. I think it needs to be made clear that this application was written in conjuction with National Rail and that the proceeds go to the developer and not NR. This guy has clearly gone about doing this the right way, got permission, and the result is a well resolved app. £4.99 is a reasonable price, concidering the amount of hard work involved. Well done Dave!
Pure brilliance! By: siboff2000 - 04-Sep-2009 Version: 1.1 Well worth the price - gives both timetabled train information and 'real time' information, showing the exact location of a train that has already departed. A train that is in transit is indicated by a blue flashing dot showing it's current location. Am not sure whether engineering works are indicated but delays are clearly highlighted. Hasn't let me down yet - appears more accurate than phoning national rail enquiries! Ace app!
Really Useful - thanks for this application By: Tromso - 06-May-2009 Version: 1.0.1 I was already checking National Rail Enquiries timetables via bookmarks in my iphone web browser, but this makes it much simpler. I've set up the stations I normally use and now use this application all the time for checking the realtime departure board. It even tells you when a bus is replacing the train service. It's saved me a lot of time, now I can check ahead and see departure times, platform numbers etc When you can't depend on a regular train service, it's a great help. Now I just wish I could get a similar application for buses.
Good, not perfect By: DarkFire1515 - 23-Aug-2009 Version: 1.1 UPDATE:One glaring problem this app has is that it fails when things go wrong. When trains are coming and going according to schedule this app is very very useful. However, if a problem happens and trains start being cancelled and there are many platform alterations the app fails to display the updated information regarding departure times and changed platforms. I guess this is national rail's fault for not updating their web site, but for all of us who rely on the app to get to the platform early and hence get an actual seat, it's damned annoying. Sort this out- we've all paid enough for the app and god knows we pay more than enough for damned train travel!!Well finally, something associated with the British rail network that ISN'T an abysmal shambles! Initially I was very suspicious of this app, particularly due to the massive price, but a few days of use has me convinced- this is the best teain timetable app available. At first I thought that most if the features, particularly the next train home function were useful, but I really missed having a list of favourite stations. Oh, wait, it is included. I missed being able to not only see departure & arrival times for trains but also stops and estimated timings for intermediate stations. Oh, wait, it does that too!Having thoroughly tested this app over a good few days I can easily say that it's by far the most feature rich and useful train app in the store. Better than trains was and better than myrail by a long shot. If First "Great" Western trains were as good as this app I'd be a very happy man! Expensive but definitely worth it.
Really useful app By: Ag5019 - 23-Sep-2009 Version: 1.2 Used every day and incredibly useful. All of the gripes about pricing seem to forget that £4.99 is not exactly expensive in terms of what else it might buy. Could do though with implementation of the 'via' option in journey planner -- not often needed but can be very useful on occasion. To the person that complains that progress can't be viewed after departure, just look at arrival time at destination instead then view progress from there, and if it's a really long journey pick an intermediate station.
Get Real By: The Right Honourable Eric Fawkshard MP - 01-Apr-2009 Version: 1.0 Never written a review here before - but this is a stunning application and I am more than happy to pay £5 (though I do expect regular updates with new functionality rather than just fixes). To those who are bitching about the loss of Lite My Rail, or whatever it's called, I agree that there should be choice and that if an application developer can do it for free then good luck to them so long as they are willing to pay a royalty to NR for the use of data. On the other hand, if they were getting the data for nothing, and that particular racket has now ended, then tough.
Great app By: Nj the Greek - 20-Sep-2009 Version: 1.2 Very useful app and worth the fiver it cost me. Next train home option is quick and handy, especially when facing that common night out dilemma- do I stay out for one more and risk getting stranded?! The journey planner remembers your most popular stations, and I've found it to be always accurate. The key to this app above the normal NRE site or the phone line is it's quick and easy to use on the go- particularly on nights out.
