FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q : What are iCam and iCamSource?
A : iCam is an application for the iPhone and iPod touch that allows you to view live streaming video and audio from up to four computer webcams at the same time.
iCamSource is the free computer application that streams your webcam video and audio to iCam.
Q : What do I need to do to setup and use iCam and iCamSource?
A : The steps are:
1) Download iCam to your iPhone or iPod touch and iCamSource to your computer.
2) Start the iCamSource, and choose your USB / FireWire / Built-In webcam from the Video and Audio drop-down lists. If you are connecting to an Ethernet / Wi-Fi camera, simply enter the camera's MJPEG/JPEG URL along with the camera's login and password.
3) Enter a Login and Password, and click the Start button. iCamSource is now setup and running.
4) Start iCam on your iPhone or iPod touch, and enter the same Login and Password from Step 3.
5) Tap Done. iCam is now setup and running, and should connect to the iCamSource running on your computer.
Tap a video thumbnail to Zoom In, and Double-Tap to Zoom Out.
Repeat Steps 2 & 3 for any additional computers and Steps 4 & 5 for any additional iPhones or iPod touches, being sure to use the same Login and Password for all of them.
Q : Do I have to configure my firewall or router or know what my IP address is to use iCam?
A : Nope. :)
iCam and iCamSource use the same firewall- and router-piercing technologies and algorithms developed for fileai.com to perform zero-config peer-to-peer connections. In most situations, things should "just work" unless your network is particularly complex or restricted.
If you do have problems getting things to work, please be sure to either Contact Support or visit the Discussion Forum.
Q : Does this work if iCam is connected via EDGE or 3G or a different WiFi network than the iCamSource?
A : Yes.
Note : If you are on the move and your iPhone switches between being connected via WiFi, EDGE or 3G, you may have to tap the Reconnect button if you lose your connections as your IP address may have changed.
Q : What types of cameras does the iCamSource support?
A : The iCamSource currently supports any Built-In, FireWire or USB webcam supported by Windows XP/Vista or OS X 10.4 (Tiger) and later. It also supports FireWire-connected DV cameras on OS X 10.5 (Leopard) and later. Video-only support is also available for most MJPEG/JPEG-compatible WiFi and Ethernet network IP webcams.
Q : Can I save screenshots in iCam?
A : Yes, you can save screenshots by pressing the iPhone's Home and Sleep/wake buttons at the same time. The images will be stored in your iPhone's Photos Camera Roll.

Excellent, simple, and priced just right.  rating of iCam (Webcam Video Streaming)

I had a friend come over and was showing him all of the cool things my iPhone can do, and he asked, wouldn't it be cool if you could view your webcam from your phone? I was like, I bet you can actually, and a 30 second search in the app store brought me to this app. I was like, for 5 bucks, if it even REMOTELY works like it claims to, it would be cool. Well, I must say I'm highly impressed. First off, it took less than 5 minutes to set up, the application icon is clean, and the client that runs on your desktop is unobtrusive and not filled with bloatware. The push notifications are extremely nice, not because they are there, but because you can enable and disable them from within the app, you don't have to go and change settings on your pc. It can be as sensitive as picking up my cat walking across the livingroom, to requiring someone to actually move in front of the camera. All of this can be changed from the app on the fly.
The app itself streams very nicely. On 3G I get about 1-2 FPS with or without audio, I can't complain about it, unless someone goes darting across your room at top speed it'll catch whatever is going on. If I'm on a WiFi connection, it's perfect, about the same clairity you get streaming from PC to PC.
I bought this app as a novelty, for no particular reason, and am more than happy with my purchase. I will recommend this to anyone. My only complaint might be that my webcam was a cheap $15 camera from Wal-Mart, maybe I can upgrade there and get better picture quality and light sensitivity. Good Job SKJM!

Incredibly Easy!!  rating of iCam (Webcam Video Streaming)

I could not believe how simple it was to start using my USB webcam as a simple version of a security camera. I have not hooked up a microphone for sound yet but I do not think it is necessary. Now I want to get a few wireless cameras to add to the one I have. The only thing I have trouble with is when I stop the computer program, I have to completely shutdown the program and restart it to get the camera to work when I push the Start button in the software. Other than that, it works perfectly!Update: so far I have been completely successful connecting to my webcam while away from using 3G, wi-fi, and Edge network. Though, it takes several attempts to connect using Edge network sometimes. In some places, such as in the radiology dept in the hospital, it won't connect at all which seems logical to me!

OMG!!! If "peace of mind" has a price, it's definitely a lot more than $4.99!!!! If I had bought my iPhone ONLY for this App, it would already be the BEST purchase of my life!! I am 39yrs old, married, but we don't have children. But... 2 dogs, who are the love of my life. I guess I transfer my childless void on to my dogs. So when we go out, I cannot stay away for too long because I worry about my dogs being home alone. Once I dreamed that my house caught on fire and my dogs were home alone and could not get out. Since then, I panic every time I go out. I just bought my iPhone 4 days ago and yesterday I installed this iCam App. I put my laptop at one end of the living room with my QuickCam on, so I could see the whole room (my dogs always sit on a chair by the front window). Then we went for dinner at my dad's house and stayed there some 3-4 hours.
For the FIRST TIME EVER, I was able to RELAX while away from home!!! I had my iPhone with my iCam on all the time and would take a peek at it once in a while. Saw the dogs walking around, eating, going back to the window, etc....
Call me psycho-over-protective-dog-owner... I don't care... I have my reasons for being like this (plus the awful nightmare I once had), and this App has changed my life. I wish I could give it a million Stars and pay more money!!!
As for the Tech review.... here we go...
Installing and getting it to run was the easiest thing!! But... I had a problem when I went out which later was fixed.
When I installed it at first, and tested it at home before I went out... I was kind of disappointed because it was not "streaming video", it was more like a still picture that would update every 30 seconds. I tested at home with my iPhone being connected WiFi from my home router, and also via 3G at home. The 3G have me the framerate of about 30 seconds and the WiFi 20 seconds. But I was happy anyway that I could see the dogs... even though the framerate was slow... the picture/image was excellent/perfect!!! (I have a pretty good cam.. Logitech Quickcam Pro 9000).
Anyway... when I got home, I emailed iCam's Support and got a very fast response. I was told to update my camera's driver. I did a full QuickCam update (driver and software)... and.... VOILÁ..... I have streaming video now!!!!!!!! YEAY!!!! My iCam is super fast now with 1 frame per second via WiFi and maybe about 1 frame per 2 seconds via 3G. That's why now I wrote this "oh so happy" review!!!
Thanks iCam Support for your help and speedy reply.... and for this App that has changed my life!!! THANK YOU!!!

AMAZING  rating of iCam (Webcam Video Streaming)

I have NEVER written a review before, but I felt this one deserved it. I tried several other "webcam" apps and have been dissapointed each time. I pretty much went into this one with the same attitude and boy was I wrong. The Push alert works like a charm and the quality is great. Of course wifi runs faster than the 3gs network I'm on, but it still pays for itself to see your home while at work or on vacation. In my case, to see the dogs destroy my house and know there's nothing I can do about it but watch!!

Excellent app  rating of iCam (Webcam Video Streaming)

I think this is the only iPhone app that actually allows you to watch your own video stream - and it works perfectly. It does need a little bit of techie knowledge to bust through your firewall but once you have set-up all the port forwarding it works flawlessly - we use it for a nanny cam and to watch our two babies whilst they sleep when we are out - it gives us great peace of mind for $4.99 (and $600 on cameras of course) ! Plus the technical support is very fast and friendly and accurate. You can't beat it.

Awesome app for just $4.99. I could have spent 10-100 times as much money for other remote webcams. Does everything just as described. For the money, this is the best app available in the App Store. It truely exhibits the power of the iPhone at a great price! Perhaps in the future, remote webcam operations (pan/zoom) will be supported. I'd pay at least $100 for that and still save thousands of dollars. Thanks for the sound support too! Great work!

If this thing continues to work as well as it has in the first 10 minutes it's a homerun. I can not believe how easy it was to configure and use. Unbelievable given I'm going through umpteen layers of misc networking. I'm using it with a 3G router and my Mac. I've spent a lot of time dicking around with webcam/ip cam security crap and this was by far the easiest thing ever. Unbelievable. I hope it keeps working.

icam put a man in jail  rating of iCam (Webcam Video Streaming)

After being broken into two nights in a row, I decided to buy a network camera and icam. Only hours after setting up icam I got a motion alert pushed to my iphone. I view the webcam and see a burglar in my shop. I quickly call 911 and informed them of the robbery in progress and was able to give a description of the man doing the robbing. I had a heck of a time explaining how I was able to give a description of the guy and knew of the robbery from 25 miles away. They asked if I could still view the webcam and I had to explain that I stopped viewing the action on my iphone in order to call them using my iphone... Long story short, a thief is in jail today thanks to icam

I love this app no problems with setup and getting multiple cams on one computer set was a snap after taking a look at the icam forums this is def worth the 4.99 plus .99 for the push notifications. What i would like to see in the next update would be an increase in the number of cams to 6 and maybe the ability to take a snapshot.. Other then that this is one of the most usefull apps for the iphone i have seen, it is nice to be able to check up on your house while you are out and the motion detection with push notification is Very cool, ghost cam anyone?

Support is Exceptional  rating of iCam (Webcam Video Streaming)
By: alandpeggy - Aug 21, 2009

I have spent the last several days emailing Apple Support and the developer of this App to assist me. I contacted the developer first because I couldn't buy the Push feature. I got a prompt which read I had to buy the App first, but I already had. I bought it in April of this year. It was fun then, but lacked a feature I really wanted, which was "audio." Upgrading would now give me this. The developer said the message I was getting was not generated by him, but by the iTunes store and Apple. Apple was great. Jesse, and later Amanda emailed several times giving me tips and helping me problem solve, and much to my surprise I found that I had four iTunes accounts, and I had to use the same one to add Push as I had used to buy the App in April. Before I discovered which account, I made a wild guess, and ended up buying a second copy, but with the help of Jesse and Amanda, iTunes took off that charge. Now I know how to look at each account to determine which Apps were purchased with each one. Then after installing the Push feature, I still couldn't hear sound! OMG - day three! Re-enter the App developer! With his help I discovered the setting on the App - on my phone - was set to line-in mic, but it has to be set at built-in mic. Problem solved - NOT SO FAST - it still wasn't the whole solution. By now Stefan and I were on first name basis, we emailed back and forth a dozen times over the next two or three days. Finally, he went back to step one and gave me a detailed list of settings and options to go through. Step by step, and while this may look like too long a story, this process really deserves the space! The support for problems you may encounter or questions about it is there, and it's friendly. A very User Friendly Company! BTW - the final fix was made in my computer system preferences! This App requires a "source" on your computer, besides the App on your phone, and the source of the audio was incorrectly set. That was it. It does all it says, I hear and see video picked up by the built-in camera & mic on my computer, and it is transmitted to my iPhone perfectly! Get it- you will love it, and if you need help, very patient people will assist you!

Love this app  rating of iCam (Webcam Video Streaming)

I am using this for two main purposes. I use it for watching my home and office using built-in iSight cams on several Macs. But I have a business need where I need to monitor a videoconference from time to time. So I connected my Polycom desktop codec to a analog to firewire box (Canopus) we had and connected that to a Mac running the desktop sofware. Now I can watch and see the conference when I need to from my iPhone!

With its ease of set up (5 minutes for two computers) and mind blowing simplicity (I don't know how they did it, but it just works!!) this app is really the best thing I've seen in the store...EVER! I use it to keep an eye on my Mixed Martial Arts facility while I'm away. It gives me great piece of mind...and...it's got tons of cool-factor! LOL! If u have a computer and a USB web cam, buy this app! Even if u don't think you need it, you'll end up using it...I'd put money on it! ;) Great job guys, Ken Owner / Instructor Frederick Fight Club, Maryland

What's going on with iCam?  rating of iCam (Webcam Video Streaming)

Follow up: User error, app works great. I especially love the push notifications on the motion detection. Tech support responded quickly to my questions.
This worked quite well for a long time but now my iCamSource has been upgraded and no long starts. When I try to go to skjm.com, it says the owner may be trying to sell the domain. Are you guys still around? If not, this app should definitely be removed from the app store.
When iCamSource is working again, I'll be happy to change this to 4+ stars.

Superb App, with a feature requests  rating of iCam (Webcam Video Streaming)
By: ma2007 - Aug 11, 2009

As it stands, this app delivers fully and easily on its premise. It is solid, easy to configure, and it just works. The only way I can see that it can be better is to build time-lapse into the video source software, so that you can have the option of streaming live video and streaming the time-lapse video that your computer has recorded at a pre-settable and changeable time interval, fully configurable and viewable from your iPhone. It would make this app solid gold for people on the go! Please please please consider!

This was easy to setup and i was working in less time than it took to download the app! I added the push notification option for when i am away from home. It becomes a great motion alarm! I am using it on a Mac and a PC with no issues. My only wish is there should be a way to turn on the camera while away. For my Mac, I have setup ssh so I can remote in and start or stop the app in the meantime. well worth the $4.99 +$.99 for push!

I'm not obsessive compulsive, but I can't stop checking this app. Has anything changed at home? Nope. Is the dog still sleeping? Yep. But I keep looking. All the time. (And it hasn't run down my battery like I thought it would) This has become the definitive app I show friends when I want to convince them to get an iPhone. If SKJM wants to pay me for all the marketing I've done for them, it couldn't hurt. ;)

Set up was plug and play for me. Great sound and video. The second it detects motion i immediately get pop up window on iphone asking me if id like to view video feed. I plan to use it for security/peace of mind when not home. >>> I wish it would give you the option to make and save video file on iphone when cam detects motion. That's the one thing missing. <<< Still - This is the best app I have ever downloaded and the first time I have ever said "this app should cost more than I just paid".

I have a Siberian husky. Very well trained, smart yada yada yada. Any the dog is an angel when I'm around but when I'm gone, he chews stuff. At my wits end, I decided to set up a webcam at home and watch what he does. I also hooked up skype to yell at him if he was being a douche. So I found icam and I have to say, it's def the best app to watch webcams. It's works best on wireless, but it's good enough on edge and 3g. I def recommend this app to everyone. Worth the money PS. My dog hasn't chewed in sometime

Works EXACTLY as advertised. I purchased this app last night and followed up with the download and install of the desktop app on my PC. After installing the desktop app, plugging in my webcam, and starting iCamSource up, the iPhone connection was established immediately. I didn't hve to configure my router or firewall - worked "right out of the box" so to speak. I HIGHLY recommend this app -totally worth more than is being charged.
