Awesome, worth every penny.  rating of Seismometer
By: lunartick - 15-Sep-2008
Version: 1.1
Forget what some of the price moaners are saying (hey - don't buy it if you don't want it!), this is a complete seismometer that fits in your pocket for less than 60p- and it works !!!! - real ones half this good cost thousands, mateys- (yes, i'm talking over $/£1000+ !!! ). Aditionally If you are prepared to attach your iphone/touch to a short beam or bar with one end stuck in the ground then this would work even better and as well as the very best seisometers the pros use. (As it stands it will easilly see the medium to larger tremors, but you need to make sure it is on a sturdy surface, as if you have it in a soft case or on a soft carpet this will absorb any small earth movements, which is not what you want).
This does actually detect earth tremours very well, and now they have added the settings it works great!!
I would like to see a few extra features at some point such as a gain/amp control (in linear mode I could do with increasing the graph gain (making the amplitude of the graph bigger) as the whole dynamic range of the acclerometer is so big!) also an image capture of the graph (i.e store the graph as a jpg in the picture folder on the iphone).
Also perhaps an alarm option, where you set a threshold and if the quake goes over it, it sounds a beep or something, would be useful as a warning of ground shakes.
In short yes, it's a toy, but it actually does work! - Welldone on such a great app!

What a superb app  rating of Seismometer
By: Switchtodvd.co.uk - 08-Sep-2008
Version: 1.0
Great well thought app but being a doctor you need to see a 30 second history to reap the benefits. You cannot give a correct prognosis on the past 5 seconds. Get a record function and this gives a 100% thumbs up tool. When a developer puts all there hours of work into an app like this why should it be free. Let's say he gave it away free to the 1st 250 customers and then charges a small 59p for his work. Not really a great deal to charge just a can drink basically. Would all the people that moaned do hours of work for free or would you like a few pence from everyone who downloaded your work.

Even better now!  rating of Seismometer
By: Bass&Naj - 16-Sep-2008
Version: 1.1
Love the upgrade, it's registering very high on my seismometer (pun intended!). Really good app for only 99c.
If there's an upgrade, I'd suggested 3 very simple things:
1) A "mark" button that would draw a line on the readout.
2) The ability to change the sampling rate or change the chart speed.
3) The ability to scroll back to examine output.
okay maybe 4... for those who need a lesson in physics an "info page" on how this works (or a link).

Perfect  rating of Seismometer
By: Rogerjoseph6969 - 7-Sep-2008

Very good app. To comment to the ones thatvthink the line should be zero once it's on a table is wrong. A car passing on the street is enough to shake an iPhone on a table. A dog barking or your breathing on the table while watching the app is enough to move the needle to not equal zero. Very nice tool to show students how environmental vibrations effect items. Try it go to another room and shout if you're loud enough you can move the needle.

Very well written application  rating of Seismometer
By: jepho - 31-Aug-2008
Version: 1.0
This is a very well written application that demonstrates amplitude, frequency and duration of vibration. My young son was fascinated as we created earthquakes in miniature and talked about what was been shown by the wandering blue line. 5 stars for an innovative application that offers a tantalising glimpse of the world about us. Would like to see an (adjustable) scale for duration, an amplitude scale (Richter?) and the ability to record save and review records. A calibration tool plus or minus filters would be nice too. Thanks to the developer, Johan. :))))

Good first version (update 1)  rating of Seismometer
By: cy_starkman - 12-Sep-2008

Thanks fir valuing your work. Wish I had waited so I could have paid too. It works pretty good. Interesting idea actually. I think the rounded back of the iphone causes some disturbance. As such I reckon a calibration feature is needed. Perhaps using audio, like a clap since touching causes motion. It would be nice to review the graph by sliding a finger and even zooming with pinch etc.The option to geotag, timestamp and email (either a picture or data stream) could have scientific implications. Imagine in an earthquake, people with iPhones sending data. Researchers would have a hugely increased data set with lots of localized points. Kind of like distributed computing but distributed collecting.Cy +61 (0)437449912

Revised Review: On the right track!  rating of Seismometer
By: AMJPRO - 13-Sep-2008
Version: 1.1
I work as a camera operator for Broadcast TV... Having a stable surface is critical for a shooting position. I can totally see this app as being a valuable tool with some further useability added. With the needle shortened we can now see more data which is better in this version but to scroll back and review your session would still be very valuable to me. The added controls and pause feature are great additions and going in the right direction. Suggestions: add a time count along the graph margin to see how long the session has gone. When paused if you can *scroll* back and review the data this app would add huge useability. As it stands now, you only see what's on the screen at that given moment which is this app's biggest limitation. Future consideration to scroll, save the graph, compare sessions, email graph, and perhaps sound alerts at target thresholds will make this app a truly useful tool rather than just a cool novelty. That said, it's still a really cool novelty right now!! Well done. Great job.

It Rocks !  rating of Seismometer
By: CoolGadget - 12-Sep-2008

A neat and clever gadget that actually works. It will be helpful if the developer provides explanation to the meaning of the various setting components : e.g. What is the difference between having a high-pass filter or not ? What is logarithmic scale versus linear scale ? And what are the distinctions between "Y&Z" and "All" axis? etc. Is there a typical setting that resembles a weather station's seisometer ?

Could be Useful  rating of Seismometer
By: Proofreader - 05-Sep-2008
Version: 1.0
Not too many earhquakes in my region, but this app could have real value for Photographers and HiFi Buffs, both of whom need to be aware of vibration in their equipment.
This could be used to evaluate tripods and compare different models or to evaluate speaker stands and hifi cabinets.
It could also be used as a tool to practice breathing technique and posture to avoid camera shake.
This app just needs to evolve a little to meet the above needs and could easily become a valuable paid app. (10% commision please if these ideas let Johan give up his day job)

Nice  rating of Seismometer

Great app - especially for free! However, it'd be useful to have some units - don't know if this is possible without calibration, but there could be a timeline count. Also, I'm not exactly sure what the traced signal is?! Is it the sum of all three accelerometer signals? If so, then it'd be nice to be able to plot the three separate traces. And, if the data is acceleration, it'd be nice to see displacement (although again I guess this might not be possible). Anyway, enough niggles - nice app!

Wow, very cool stuff!  rating of Seismometer

Wow, I like this. I tried that on my speaker and on the floor beside to see if there was a lot of vibration transfered from the speakers and the floor. I was impressed with the results.
There is only few things I will like to see, if you plan to improve it, it's a pause and/or stop button, and also the possibility to take few snap shut that can be review after with if possible some kind of scale number and volume.
Continue the great job.

Carl  rating of Seismometer
By: Geo-Carl - Dec 4, 2008
Version: 1.1
A great start, but lacks separation of the three axes of motion with the iPhone. A real seismic recorder would separate up-down, east-west, and north-south movements. Three pens would have ample room if you allow for screen rotation.
Also the response time is much too fast for other types of acceleration. Put a better high pass filter in and you've got a great app.
I'll look forward to the new version

Good vibrations!  rating of Seismometer
By: memobug - Sep 4, 2008
Version: 1.0
This clever app plots vibrations on a faux chart recorder. With a little imagination, one can come up with any number of uses, like comparing the ride quality of new cars, positioning your subwoofer, looking for resonant points in structures like bridges, etc, or maybe seeing which grip or posture is the most stable for shooting; photos, guns or arrows. Adding a feature to set alarm points, one could make an earthquake alert or theft alarm. I'd love to see dual recorders for x,y with different colored ink. Some averaging and integrating functions to calculate energy would be great, as well as adding history and reset options. How about being able to select logarithm paper instead of this quadrille? Note to past reviewers: giving this free app a low score isn't appropriate if the limitation is your own creativity!
