Demonstrates Poor AT&T 3G By: Wireless Test Man - Dec 27, 2009 Version: 1.1.1 A friend & I have been running this app side-by-side on an iPhone 3GS (AT&T) and an HTC Droid Eris (Verizon). Same exact app... using the same servers....Verizon's 3G is always FASTER! What's really sad is that Verizon is about 3X faster in the uplink... in the downlink we top out at about 1.2 Mbps on the iPhone while we get 1.8-2.0 Mbps on the HTC Droid....So what gives? I thought, according to BOTH Apple & AT&T ads (with the FAT Luke Wilson) that AT&T's 3G was supposed to be faster.... What's going on? in over 50 side-by-side tests, it is certainly not working out that way...I called Apple to ask if either Apple was limiting the data speeds in the device or if AT&T was limiting them in the network... No one knows anything..... Nice.... make a bold claim as both companies do, and then have NOTHING to back it up! No wonder AT&T is rated the WORST in Consumer Reports!
Great speed test app! By: G-A-R-Y-O-N-E! - Dec 21, 2009 Version: 1.1.1 I use speedtest.net to regularly test the network connection speed for both Macs and PC's and so I was psyched when I found this iPhone app. It's great when you want to quickly test the speed of your Wifi and 3G connection to select which one is faster. And no it's not always Wifi. In the Boston area ATT's 3G speed is actually good so depending on where you are and the Wifi available 3G may actually be much faster. So far I've had no problems with this app crashing or freezing. If your having problems try restarting your iPhone before running the test. And for the reviewer who wanted a history, just click on results and it will display a results history.
DON'T listen to the rest By: nugeto5 - Nov 27, 2009 Version: 1.1.1 For those who think this app is worthless, your wrong. the reason a laptop connected and tested at the same time gets better results is obvious. The iPod touch/iPhone simply does not have the ability to connect at such fast speeds. the wireless hardware in your iDevice is about a fifth of the size of a mini-pci wireless card. thats why it's slower. If you read the description it says something along the lines of "the network connection of your iPhone/iPod touch." It doesn't say anything about your regular network connection.
Accurate results, best price! By: neZZr - Feb 18, 2009 Version: 1.0.1 This test uses local servers to give you the best results of any test I've tried, including the web based tests, and even on fast wifi connections (ie 5mbps+). Also stores results from previous tests. And free, what more could you ask?My only suggestions would be for the results page. A button linking the test location to the maps app would be nice. Also should show the signal strength and the 3G/edge connection type at the time of the test, not just cellular/wifi.
One of the best By: krazykizza - 05-Jan-2009 Version: 1.0.1 Good app. Accurate and simple to use. Few improvements on wish list: Server selection, being in the East of england Id like to choose my servers that are near me. File size selections, if on 3G and wanting a 10mb download test, that option available, or a 1mb if on EDGE. e.t.c. I would also like to see themes available. Would be good if you had an API system that works with Google Maps so that you can map your results. But amazing for free!
Awesome By: krakajap - Jan 26, 2009 Version: 1.0.1 It was hard to choose between this app and the app by cisco but I think I'll stick with this one for the simplicity, accuracy, and good graphics! :)1 suggestion... When the test is complete, highlight the speedometer with a blue and red line indicating the down and up speeds instead of leaving it set on the last upload speed. I think that would polish up this app quite nicely! :) aside from that, great work!!!
Reminds me of DSL Reports By: Do I really need a nick name? - Mar 11, 2010 Version: 1.5.1 I like this app. It provides me data to compare my connection speed at various physical places within a location. I was surprised at the differences I encountered. I also found that it can make a difference in the reported speed by switching test servers. I live in NY and was getting much slower speeds on a New Jersey server than I was on a more distant DC server. For my purposes, both worked well as I would use the same server for any batch of comparative testing of down/up load speeds in my environs. Useful freebie. :)
Excellent App! By: RedGeminiPA - Jul 30, 2009 Version: 1.1.1 This app does exactly what it says. Nice UI and the results are very accurate. On wi-fi at home, it shows roughly 7.2 Mbp/s and I have 8 Mbp/s service, so it's consistent with what my computer shows on their website. Over 3G, I usually average around 2 Mbp/s depending where I am. I believe there was an update recently, though the release date on the App Store doesn't show it. I had an issue with the server list not showing servers closer to my area. I discovered this issue when a friend downloaded this app on his iPhone and it showed servers more consistent with our area. I tried deleting the app and re-downloading it with no change. I sent them an email addressing the issue. Now, it's displaying the server I was expecting, and the results are more consistent and by far much better. The only thing this app really needs is the ability to refresh the server list by location. That would make it great for traveling.
Great Application with ACURATE readings By: Bammaster - Mar 4, 2010 Version: 1.5.1 This app is perfectly fine with no bugs so far. However for those experiencing bugs I can tell you it is most likely not because there are many things that effect Internet speed. For example: my computer says I am connected to a 100mb/s connection. I have never recorded anything near that fast. That is beacuse there are a few things that effect speed: 1. Distance from server. 2. Internet provider. 3. Amount of people connected to the server at one time. 4. The servers bradwith speed( and Ethernet adapter speed). 5. Amount if traffic( nightime speeds are usually faster than daytime speeds) 6.router type. 7. And lastly wireless speeds are much slower than wired and n routers which are currently unsupported by apple mobile devices in the iPod line, so you are stuck with b/g. Overall it is a great app. Internet speed tests are rarely wrong as it simply monitors how fast it is recieving data. I hope this helps those with bugs.
Worked Perfectly First Time By: CameraLaw - Jul 16, 2009 Version: 1.1.1 Having struggled with Safari based speed tests, I learned about this app while testing my iMac. Speed Test worked quickly and let me know my 3GS is downloading at 9Mbps, uploading at 1Mbps. This is four to twenty times the score the browser tests were coming up with. The app has a clean interface, knew what local server to use, allows changes of servers, wil display speed in Mbps, and keeps a record of my tests.
Most Useful and Illuminating App By: photo_pro - 10-Dec-2009 Version: 1.1.1 See how rubbish your phone service provider actually is. Cut through the sales nonsense and see the real speeds. Interesting how running it a second time immediately after a first result set will give a slower result. It made me wonder if the servers are set to recognise and respond favourably to a speed test because the second result seems to me to be the more accurate and representative of my actual service.
Freezes with Wi-Fi but not 3G networks ( but now FIXED in 1.5.1) By: DeBary_FL - Feb 24, 2010 Version: 1.5.1 *** Edit - Release 1.5.1 fixes the freezes I described below. I can now give this great app 5 stars. ****** ALSO - for those noting differences in speed between your PC and the iPhone results given by this app, make sure your units are the same. Note that kbps (kiloBITS per second) is NOT the same as kB/s (kiloBYTES per second). ***I've had a freezing problem on my iPhone 3Gs ever since version 1.1.1. The freezes occur at the end of the Upload test and sometimes, but not always, when I tap the Settings button. The strange thing is that the freezes, including the Settings freezes, last exactly 1 minute and then things unfreeze. It appears that something is timing out. I do not see any freezing with the the DSL Reports app or Xtreme Speedtest, the other speed test apps I've tested on the 3Gs. Also, I do NOT see any freezing when using Speedtest.net to test 3G networks - it happens just with Wi-Fi.I really wish they'd fix this, as I much prefer the interface of this app over the others I've used.
Quite handy to have! By: RaZoR69 - 06-Nov-2009 Version: 1.1.1 I don't understand the low ratings!?I'm having major problems with my net speed, confirmed with sky that my line is restricted to 135kbs thanks to BT muck up!! But I've been using various speed tests online and this is as close as the others. It does fluctuate abut, but the speed only varies slightly.Very handy to check speeds anywhere with a wifi, also you can test the 3G network which I think is pretty cool!
Much better after update! By: Nerdtalker - Feb 14, 2010 Version: 1.5.0 Previously, I really wanted to like Speedtest.net's iPhone app, but it didn't work well, gave innacurate speeds, and was all around a letdown. However, since the update, everything has changed. I can now successfully always use the speed test location in my city (and get much faster/accurate results), the application doesn't crash or fail to display the real speed, and functionality is much improved.I'm a huge fan of being able to export data as CSV; finally I can do some analysis of my own and figure out what time of day is worst, what my average speeds are, e.t.c.I have noticed a few crashes, but there are far fewer. However, once, the app did glitch out and appear to overflow the counter. The speed went to negative numbers, all the way overflowing to negative 6 megabits randomly. Forgivable, but a problem nonetheless.
Great app! By: gotzaiPhone - May 1, 2009 Version: 1.1.1 I actually left inetwork test for this. I use the flash version for my mac. Accurate results, consistant to what my U-verse speeds should be. Not to mention that the interface is amazing! Thank you for this free and usefull app!Update:I miss the old icon, but no biggie. To help out others here, for deleting results, there is no "delete all", so you have to slide your finger left to right to get the red "delete" button to appear. And as for some with slower speeds on the iPhone vs their computer, remember, regardless of the packet size, the iPhone's processor is the blockage point for achieving higher speeds.
Why not save server location? By: Rob250a - 04-May-2009 Version: 1.1.1 I like that this latest version allows you to choose which server to use. It selects Maidenhead as my nearest server (I'm in Bournemouth). I'm on Virgin Media 10mb but it only shows around 2.5mb from this server. If I change to the London server it shows 9.8mb. After closing the app and opening it again it reverts back to Maidenhead!!! Why not keep the server you prefer rather than reverting back to the nearest one?
Great app but strange inconsistancy By: Travis Was Here - Oct 18, 2009 Version: 1.1.1 This app works just as expected stable and good looking on my 3gs. I find the results on par with my wired desktop (Download rates are less but to be expected over wifi, some people don't take this into account). However i would like to point out an inconsistany with the results. If you have the display type set to mbs and email the results. The link to the result png is rated higher than my history. For example one of my wifi runs was 13.31mb down and 8.84mb up, IEmailed the link and the png shows 13.63mb down and 9.05mb up.
good but suggestions for improvement By: the real madra - 29-Nov-2009 Version: 1.1.1 a simple nice looking app which, like the website, does one job and does it well. i'd suggest a couple of improvements, to make this a 5-star app: 1: i'd like some way of assigning a location to a test. not really needed on the website version, where you'll usually be testing your home connection speed and therefore always from the same location. but with a mobile device like an ipod or iphone, you'll tend to be moving around from place to place. it would be nice to be able to assign a location [or network name] to each test, so, when browsing the history, i could - for example - view all my tests from 'home' separate from those from 'work' or 'the pub'. with all tests from all wifi networks jumbled together, as they are at present, the history pane is pretty useless as a diagnostic for monitoring the performance of a particular network over time. 2: some way to export the data would be also be handy. for those times when you're arguing with your broadband supplier about whether you're getting what you paid for.
...but for three changes...... By: KIngpin II - Feb 17, 2010 Version: 1.5.0 For the most part this app works for me, but I have three comments.1) If there is no wi-fi connection active, the app auto-closes immediately. wtf? So if a user happens to be offline, he or she cannot check/export the results history. Again:wtf!!2) speedometer maxes out at 10000 kbps. Would be nice to be higher. And the speedometer needle should be a more contrasting color.3) there should be a provision in the results history for notes and/or labels, e.g. "home" "work" "mom's network" etc.
Nice job! By: bruraha - Jun 21, 2009 Version: 1.1.1 Thought this app worked very well, though accuracy is dependent on quite a few things that I'm not sure people are aware of. Being able to switch servers is awesome because depending how that server is being used/taxed by the system can greatly affect the results. One other thing if people weren't aware: the more computers you have on your network, the slower your download speeds (sorry, I work tech support for the local cable company, and this comes up all the time!) spiffy ap,!
