Reviews:
It works great for me! By: Biturbo S4 - Jan 4, 2009 Version: 2.3.0.1039 I installed and played with a while and was able to connect easily to my University of Washington PINE email server. From there I can ssh telnet to other servers (for some reason my personal server won't accept a connection from this software, but since UW does, I just connect from there. I love being able to overlay the transparent keyboard in both landscape mode and portrait mode. My only suggestion would be to have one text size option for portrait and one for landscape. It's a great program - and the price is nice!!!
Good! By: kpreslan - Nov 26, 2008 Version: 2.2 Very useful. I just upgraded to version 2.2. It still works great. Much better than iSSH. Thanks!
When I first bought TouchTerm for $3, I thought to myself, "Finally, a wise investment that will someday appreciate enough to help me put my kids through college. In ten years, I'll be able to to sell my copy for upwards of $300." Imagine my surprise when I discover it's free now. My cunning investment down the drain. First the stock market and now TouchTerm. I hope my strategic investment in floppy disks doesn't suffer the same fate.
Excellent SSH Application By: Darkstar7 - Nov 15, 2008 Version: 2.1 This is a great SSH terminal app. The tool can save connections including custom port numbers, passwords, server names, and usernames. You can even change color of text and background. Plus the landscape text entry mode is great for improved accuracy with the virtual keyboard on iPhones. (Are you listening Apple??)
The only thing that it is missing that I would like is the ability to pinch and zoom the text size so that one could see more text at once.
Great app By: Halfdragon - Oct 25, 2008 Version: 2.1 This app is amazing, especially considering the price. I use it almost daily and it's saved having to drag a laptop around everywhere. The issues I have using it are more a limitation of the iphone then the apps fault (small screen, slow Edge network, etc), I think it does a good job trying to compensate for the device size. The special keys (CTRL, ESC, etc) and arrow keys are a great bonus for the software. I tried a different app originally and it didn't provide an ESC key, which is mandatory for vi.
Works wonderfully By: baumgc - Sep 23, 2008 Version: 2.1 This app has saved my life more than once! My university uses requires we use LaTeX to do our homework (for two of my computer science related classes), and then hand them in using a special script built into our UNIX servers. I've handed stuff in before class started on the campus wifi on more than one occasion. Overall, a super neat application. I'd love to work on my .tex files on the go, but vi does not display colors like it would using putty, OS X terminal, or any other ssh client. Instead of building a "pro" version of this app, I'm sure we'd all agree that upgrade this one for your loyal fans!
Great adaptation of SSH to mobile UI By: SpeedyX - Sep 22, 2008 Version: 2.1 It's not as easy to use as a desktop version, of course, but after installing I was able to ...
- connect to my webserver
- cd to dirs
- use grep | less to search log files
- use vi to edit config files
This was enough to convince me you could do pretty much anything you would expect of a full SSH client... Provided you have the patience. The UI for the keyboard and ctrl/fn/arrow keys is a little hard to work with, but I honestly can't think of a better solution. The transparent keyboard option is must-enable feature (not sure why it's off by default).
Great job - thanks!
Finally, an SSH for the iPhone that supports public/private key authentication! By: ptb1 - Sep 10, 2008 Version: 2.1 Update for 2.1: the transparent keyboard and menu bar have raised the bar for SSH clients yet again. TouchTerm is the best $3 I've spent on iPhone applications. Still 5 stars! ----------- Until 2.0, iPhone SSH clients offered only clear-text tunneled password authentication. The servers I administrate have explicitly disabled this to circumvent brute force attacks, and an RSA or DSA private key is required. TouchTerm 2.0 now provides that functionality, and it works great! I haven't found an option to specify or even determine the encryption cipher used for the connection. But, after configuring my SSHD to require AES-256, TouchTerm has no problem connecting to the server. TouchTerm 2.0 sets the standard for SSH clients on the iPhone.
GR8 By: wambology: the study of wambo - Sep 7, 2008 Version: 2.1 I think for a handheld ssh, it's very, very good! I like the new transparency options, but it would be great to hide the top nav altogether and possibly a small menu icon in the upper right or lower right corner to show/hide top nav. I use this regularly on a remote host with screen and irc client... Reattach from my iPhone 3G when I need to remotely, along with other uses (e.g. router access, etc.). Worth every penny compared to some of the other utilities i see on AppStore.
Does what it says, at the best price in its class By: nsayer - Sep 2, 2008 Version: 2.0 So first, let me point out that this is a REMOTE terminal application. It won't bring up a terminal on the phone itself. It's not a 'jail break' for the phone. It's a way to bring up a terminal on servers out on the Internet (or on your local WiFi connection). Those looking for a terminal app to hack on their phone will, no doubt, never find one in the app store. There were at least 4 remote terminal apps to pick from in the app store when I went looking. I picked this one for the collection of positive reviews and the low price. I was not disappointed. It does exactly what it says in a completely reasonable way. I have some minor suggestions for the author: 1. Make the 'control' button highlight after you touch it. Perhaps make it a toggle (that clears after you type a letter). It's not clear that the button 'heard you' after you touch it. 2. Keep connections alive, if possible. Perhaps it isn't possible. I'm not sure. But being unable to switch to another app (like Safari) and then switch back to your terminal prompt is a bummer. 3. Add a mechanism to transmit the public key of an authentication key to the connected server. E-mailing it is a neat trick, but a bit round-about. Just let me type "cat > pubkey" and then perform a gesture to transmit the key. 4. Similarly, perhaps consider adding a mechanism to allow use of keys generated outside of the app. 5. copy/paste. Even if it isn't usable outside of the app. Perhaps a global iPhone solution for a clipboard will come soon, making this moot. Even with these minor suggestions, the app is well worth its price. It's once again reduced the number of reasons why I would carry around a laptop in addition to my phone.
Fantastic implementation By: Kenop - Aug 31, 2008 Version: 2.0 This is the best of the available ssh apps available so far, and I am extremely happy with the featureset and performance. It's not easy over Edge but acceptable - I would turn auto scroll and live type feedback off while on edge.
I don't know if it's feasible but an integrated browser window would be great, as I lose my connection if I have to check / refresh a page in mobile safari. For what I do (webserver script installs) it would make this app worth double the price, easily.
Security, Font size options and auto landscape mode make this a sysadmin's dream come true.

Very Well Done By: SeanReilly - Aug 22, 2008 Version: 2.0 I just purchased TouchTerm and have logged in to all of my machines using a newly generated public/private key without any problems. The interface is well designed and supports everything I've tried to do so far while leaving plenty of screen space to see the actual terminal. I love the feature to send the public key via email - very clever. My only feature request would be to add an authentication agent with forwarding (-A option in openssh) so that the private key authentication could be used for further ssh connections from the destination machine.
why would anyone complain? By: inmaniac - Aug 21, 2008 Version: 2.0 It bothers me that anyone would complain about this app. I like it. Right now I believe it is the only ssh app in the store and it's only $3. I would have paid $20 for an ssh client.
It does all that I need it to do. Others have mentioned that it doesn't allow you to change ports. I don't think it needs this ability. If you really need to be able to ssh from your phone then its worth setting things up so you can ssh to 22.
It would be nice to be able to use a key, but I can't figure out how you would get an existing key in this app. You can't copy and paste and the iPhone doesn't have a file storage where the app could get it. The only thing I can think of is that the app could generate them and allow you to paste the public key once you have connected to a host.
I love this app and I am grateful that some great developer out there gave us an ssh client.
TouchTerm Delivers! By: ADobkin - Aug 21, 2008 Version: 2.0 Revising my earlier review of version 1.x, since version 2.0 was just released....
TouchTerm definitely gets credit as the first SSH app released for the iPhone, and still the cheapest. It was briefly surpassed in features by the two newer apps, pTerm and iSSH, but now it has kicked them squarely in the butt! With full terminal support (added in 1.1), and multiple saved connections and PKI (added in 2.0), TouchTerm is now without a doubt the best SSH app on the iPhone!
Really great - really useful By: Drejtiv - Aug 16, 2008 Version: 1.1 I was looking for a simple ssh client to handle basic remote admin + monitoring. This fills the bill beautifully. I'm not going to write code ON my phone - so I think I had the right expectations. But I did want the ability to view log files, run process monitors and modify settings on my remote hardware - version 1.0 worked well enough; v1.1 is golden. A nice piece of work. My most used app & value priced.
Very usable, and on track to be superb By: jauricchio - Aug 15, 2008 Version: 1.1 This review is for 1.1. The developers just added vt100 terminal emulation, after... what, a week? Yeah, just about a week for everyone to say "Dang this is a good start, but it'd be really nice if it were a real terminal." And then it's delivered. Impressively fast development cycle. It's not exactly a *joy* to use a CLI from the phone, but this is about as close as I'll ever expect to get. All that's left on my wishlist: key auth, with passphrase on the key. And keys are *already done in 2.0*, already submitted to the App Store. Guys, is there a way I can pay you *MORE* than $2.99 for TouchTerm? You deserve it.
1.1 version is OUTSTANDING By: sudoSamurai - Aug 14, 2008 Version: 1.1 I picked this up at the 1.0 version hoping to support the developer, but honestly not expecting much. I just updated it to the new version with terminal emulation and it is great. I was able to log into several machines, run top, edited a couple of files in VI and Emacs, and attached to a screen session wtih IRC running and it all worked perfectly. I am very glad I purchased this, and look forward to the pro version. Keep up the great work!
SSH Makes Me Happy By: Jophiel52 - Aug 7, 2008 Version: 1.0 Works as advertised, and it never claims to have terminal emulation capabilities, but that is on the way in the next release anyways.
I needed an SSH client and as a network administrator, having one in my pocket is invaluable. It says it's an SSH client and it does that well. For being the first SSH client in the app store and because reviews citing no terminal emulation have been overly harsh, it gets 5 stars.
Thanks, dev! By: kapstaad - Aug 7, 2008 Version: 1.0 Yes, like other reviewers have noted, some nice extra features would make this an even better tool. I second the other requests for:
Access to Settings while connected;
A server directory;
Terminal support;
Public Key support.
But AS ADVERTISED this solid little app does everything it claims, does it well, and has not crashed my iPhone - which I think *every* other app I've got has done at some point.
To the moron who said this app was 'stupid', STFU. If you're so smart, where's YOUR all-singing, all-dancing ssh client?
To the developer: kudos! Ya done good. Looking forward to updates and the 'Pro' version :)
Great application, needs just a few things. By: ScottOfMissouri - Aug 6, 2008 Version: 1.0 This application is very handy and I've been waiting for something like this for quite some time. The author says he will put out terminal emulation, which will be great. I would also like to see bookmarks for commonly used servers as I connect to more than one on a frequent basis. Overall, great job and I give it five stars because the reviews so far have not been fair. Three dollars for this app is a good price and it delivers something that we haven't had without jailbreaking our phones.
Finally By: cloud boy - Aug 5, 2008 Version: 1.0 Works as described, white on black background is tough to use but black on grey works well. Remembers last login and keeps a history. Font is adjustable with a small slider. I don't like I can't go to the "settings" screen once I've logged into a machine. You have to logout and then exit the program then restart (unless I'm missing something). Once I exit my ssh session it should bring me back to the main "application" to log into another machine or perhaps adjust the settings. Instead it's like logging out of a console and it just leaves you with a dead shell. Still, worth the three bucks and it gets me into my machine at work so I'm a happy camper. Hopefully the authors will fix these minor annoyances. Now if we can get NetShare back in the store I'd be a happy camper.
